Dear Perla, On behalf of the Sanford Historic Trust I would like to wish you success with your new venture, My Sanford Magazine. I for one would like to read positive articles about our fair city with its quaint neighborhoods and their rich historic past, the vibrant nightlife with its many award winning restaurants, bars and shops, the breathless views from the Riverwalk on the banks of Lake Monroe situated on the lazy St. Johns River, and, most important, the friendly, quirky people of Sanford that will make you smile. Sanford will be a rich source for stories and articles for your new publication, My Sanford Magazine. It is my hope you will be able to find worthwhile contributors who will be able to provide interesting information about our town, and give to our citizens and nearby communities the chance to get some more in-depth knowledge about Sanford and its goings on. I know, with your deep experience editing a successful magazine in Italy for the Dominican Republic, your attention to detail and dedication, your new venture will be a great success for you and Sanford.

FROM THE

DE LA

It is a pleasure to be sharing this moment with you. I believe that My Sanford Magazine will help bring our wonderful community together and spark in interest in Sanford’s rich history. I obtained my undergraduate degree in Marketing and my graduate degree in Business. My professional life began as a private banker in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic; years later, I was appointed as Director General of Tourism (1991) in Rome, Italy. I was next appointed Counselor for Economics and Commercial Affairs and later promoted to Deputy Chief of Mission of the The Dominican Embassy in Rome, Italy. It was during my assignment in Italy that I also founded and served as the editor of Caraibi (Caribbean) Magazine: a Tourist and Business publication. Simultaneously, I served as President of the Institute of Trade and Culture at an Italian and Dominican organization. After serving my country as a diplomat for thirteen years, I was appointed as International Community Coordinator for the Dominican Republic Parliament. I met and married Benny Crosby during this period and later relocated to the United States. My husband is now retired from the U.S. Secret Service after thirty years of honorable service to our Country. My husband is fiercely patriotic and this has influenced me completely; the United States has been my home for many years now, and it never ceases to amaze me. My Sanford Magazine is an avenue through which I will make a concerted effort to humbly contribute my knowledge and experience, while focusing on the positive aspects of our wonderful city and people.

REASONS TO MOVE TO

SANFORD, FL

[

CL AUDIA MUNDLOS

There are so many reasons, but here are the ones you can’t miss

]

1. CREATIVE EVENTS GALORE

2. ART HAVEN

Have you ever seen couches race down the street? In Sanford, this happens twice a year at Sofas & Suds, a couch racing craft beer festival. Twelve local businesses form teams consisting of five couch racers who will then battle it out against each other for the big trophy. For another wild event, also check out the Pints N’ Paws craft beer festival and the Illuminated Bike Parade. More info can be found at: facebook.com/sofasandsuds and pintsandpaws.com.

Sanford is an artsy town, full of creative people. Sanford boasts some of the best art galleries in Central Florida. Jeanine Taylor Art Gallery (211 E 1st Street) was voted one of the 20 most essential art galleries across the country by Go Magazine. You will find unique pieces here and can even watch some of the artists working in their studios inside. It’s a joy to see all the art, and it’s definitely worth the regular visit. You can get your fill for the performing arts at The Wayne Densch Performing Arts Center (WDPAC )—a restored theater that dates back to the 1920s. Enjoy a concert, musical, classic play, or the quarterly Sanford Jazz Ensemble. Whatever you choose, the WDPAC offers something for every taste and for young and old.

3. RETRO PARADISE Sanford boasts all the antique, furniture, and retro thrift shops to satisfy your needs. A leisurely stroll in downtown Sanford can quickly end in a treasure hunting marathon. Rabbitfoot Records Coffee Lounge (309 E First Street) is Sanford’s very own record store; with a plethora of vintage vinyl records for sale, it’s got some of the best freshly brewed organic coffee in town. Listen to the music you want to buy beforehand—they will play any of the records they have in the store. On the list of retro fun in Sanford are the Celery City Cruisers, who meet on the last Saturday of every month (with exception of November and December) close to the Sanford Marina to show off their beautiful old cars and listen to some oldies classics. For more info, check out: celerycitycruisers.com.

BoatTree Marina. Float down the St. John’s River to get close-up views of Florida wildlife—like ospreys, eagles, turtles, and alligators. Right from the water you can visit nice outdoor pool bars like Docktails and enjoy a cool beer after the day is done. For more info, check out: stjohnsrivershipco.com, docktailssanford.com and boattree.com.

5. WILD ATTRACTIONS Having a great zoo in town is rare—but Sanford is lucky. Just last year, the Sanford Zoo saw 300,000 visitors. Here, you’ll find cheetahs, giraffes, and even a sloth! Apart from the exotic animals, the zoo also offers a splash pad, playground, and train rides. Just outside the zoo, ZoomAir offers zip-lining for adults and kids. Plenty of events throughout the year—many of them educational—make this a wonderful place to visit with the kids. To cool off during the summer months, Ft. Mellon Park also offers a splash pad, and there’s a big lakefront playground with equipment for older kids. With over 34 parks (most of them with playground equipment), the city of Sanford offers families a great deal of fun.

4. BOAT BARS Lake Monroe is one of Sanford’s nature highlights. This beautiful lake brings with it the Riverwalk—where you’ll have the most scenic walks, runs, and bike rides in the entire area. Park your boat in the marina and stop by one of the lakefront dining spots. Don’t have a boat? No worries. You can share a meal on the Barbara-Lee—an authentic sternwheel paddleboat owned by the St. Johns Rivership Co. or rent a boat directly from the 9

6. MAJOR HISTORY Sanford has one of the most beautiful historic districts in greater Florida, and the city is investing in new ways of revamping historic flair. Most recently, the Sanford Avenue Streetscape Project led the way into this venture. From First Street to Sixth Street, the brick

paving on Sanford’s main road was extended, sidewalks widened, landscape improved, and decorative lighting installed. The downtown area around First Street has buildings that are hundreds of years old, and you will find beautiful Victorian homes surrounded by towering oaks in the residential district. It looks and feels like an old Southern town and it’s not uncommon to find homeowners on their front porches sipping cold ice tea and chatting it up with their neighbors.

doing, it is the perfect place to impress clients or friends. If you like beer, check out Buster’s Bistro, a Belgian beer bar with one of the coolest beer gardens around—you might get lucky and witness the occasional petanque tournament.

9. EXCLUSIVE TRAVEL PORTAL Paris? London? Rio? You got it. Sanford has its own travel portal by way of the Sanford International Airport. It is a joy traveling into and out of this airport; because it’s much smaller than Orlando International, you can scratch the traffic and long lines at check-in. Simple and fast—that’s how they roll at Sanford’s International Airport.

10. LITTLE GERMANY

7. COMMUNITY TIES Sanford has a great sense of community. People strive to get to know their neighbors and are there for each other. Businesses also share community ties. Often, you might find that instead of feeling like a patron in a bar, you’ll feel like you’re visiting a friend’s home. While Sanford has an incredibly strong unity and pride, it is also welcoming to strangers and new residents. The “I Live Work and Play in Sanford” signs in front of homes and businesses are a great example of the community supporting its town.

There’s no question—Sanford is the Little Germany of Central Florida. Hollerbach’s Willow Tree Cafe is known to most of the residents in Central Florida as “the German restaurant in Sanford.” In fact, it’s made Sanford rather famous. Well, ja, you’ll get lots of great authentic German food, but you’ll also get a taste of German culture on popular German holidays. Just take German Mardi Gras (“Fasching“), or the celebration of St.Nicolas (“Nikolaustag“). Apart from the restaurant, there is also Magnolia Square Market, a German supermarket and deli just around the corner. There, you’ll find an amazing selection of German meats, cheeses, bread and many other products—ranging from Spaetzle (German egg noodles) to chocolates. And don’t forget that the second Thursday in October marks Oktoberfest. Yearly, this event is attended by 4,000+ people from all over Central Florida!

8. ONE-OF-A-KIND VENUES Some of the most creative and friendliest people in Sanford are its business owners. Just take The Imperial at Washburn Imports, for example. A furniture store importing gorgeous furniture from Southeast Asia by day transforms into a craft cocktail bar by night. With passionate bartenders who truly know what they are

FAR AND AWAY: A GUIDE TO SANFORD & LONDON CHRISTINA GR ACE BE VERLY

IT WASN’T UNTIL a few years ago that I realized one could travel to Europe from Sanford. The keyword here is: international. Aside from offering many flights to domestic destinations, you can fly to Amsterdam, Paris, London, Stockholm, and more from the Sanford International Airport (SFB).

tea-drinking, Union flag-wearing, Doctor-Who-nut. English writer, Samuel Johnson once said, “When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford.” And I can tell you that my experiences have proved it to be true. I was able to convince my husband—a wonderful and easily bribed man—to

“If you look up ‘convenience’ in the dictionary it will have a picture of SFB and the zero wait time at security.” I first visited London by way of Sanford in 2011 and really didn’t know what to expect. We only spent a couple of days in the city, but that’s all it took for me to become a full blown Anglophile (one who admires England, its people, and its culture). I became a BBC-watching, 11

“When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford.”

5 minutes, and about 10 minutes later we were checked in and enjoying a beverage just before our flight. On both of our visits to London, we checked off many of the popular tourist sights. On your first visit, I would recommend hopping on one of the tour buses to get a good feel for the layout of the city. The London Eye is also a wonderful way to get a bird’s eye view of the vastness of London and the river it sits on—the River Thames. From this mega Ferris wheel, you’ll get an unforgettable perspective of more than 55 of London's most famous landmarks. The parks and gardens are another sight to behold. Near Buckingham Palace, St. James’ Park is the oldest of the Royal Parks—it’s also one of my favorites. Once you find your way into one of many fabulous parks in London, you’ll think you’ve been transported to the countryside. One of the things that impressed me the most about London is its diversity. So many people from various backgrounds around the world have congregated in London. Sanford is quite a bit like that; and you can see its historic influences still prevalent today in old pubs, Belgian beer bars, and German cafés. Its beautiful brick paved roads and its elegant historic homes are also reminiscent of a grand, thriving southern culture with many cultural ties.

“When a man is tired of Sanford, he is tired of life; for there is in Sanford all that life can afford.”

Every now and then I get a sense of London here in Sanford. A pint at The Quiet Man Irish Pub, the sound of the bells at All Souls Catholic Church, the coziness of The Imperial at Washburn Imports, the eclectic Food Truck Bazaars, and the M Y S A N F O R D M A G A Z I N E | CO M M U N I T Y • 12

Lynx bus cruising down First Street at night—it all makes me grin and reminds me of my time across the pond. Like London, Sanford has its secrets and sordid history too. And Sanford, like London, is a beautiful, energetic place where old and new have co-existed for quite some time. You know, I don’t think it would be too far-fetched to change Mr. Johnson’s quote a bit: “When a man is tired of Sanford, he is tired of life; for there is in Sanford all that life can afford.”

Christina Grace Beverly is a graphic designer who loves to travel and is especially passionate about London and anything British. She lives in Sanford with her husband, Nelson .

WHAT TO SEE: IN LONDON: Hyde Park and the Thames. Beautiful and wide sidewalks border the Thames on both sides and are used by joggers, bicyclists, street performers, book sellers, and lovers. IN SANFORD: Lake Monroe and the Sanford Riverwalk boast lovely scenery. Fort Mellon Park is near the riverwalk and is also a really wonderful place to visit. WHAT TO EAT: IN LONDON: The diversity of London brings a diversity of food along with it. You’ll be tempted to try it all, and you should. But don’t overlook a meal and a pint at The Old Red Lion in South London. An old-fashioned oasis, you can access it from the Kennington Tube Station. IN SANFORD: The Quiet Man Irish Pub and Eatery (105 West 2nd St). The Quiet Man serves perfect pints, pub grub, and live Irish music every Thursday evening.

DID YOU KNOW? When you travel from North America to Europe on Icelandair, you can stopover in Iceland for up to 7 nights at no additional airfare. The New York Times named the Sanford International Airport among the 10 most competitively priced small airports. In 2013, SFB served served 2,033,620 passengers.

SPECIAL MOMENTS WITH THE CUDDLY MEMBERS OF OUR COMMUNITY BENNY CROSBY

PETS HAVE BEEN an integral part of our families and everyday lives for generations. My family can be counted among those who love animals. I’ve had dogs all my life. My last, Buddy, was a fiercely loyal, playful, and protective Yorkie who taught me much about unconditional love. Buddy passed away in 2012 and has been sorely missed since. DIRECTORA DE L A ESCUEL A SECUNDARIA SEMINOLE CAN YOU SHARE AN OPINION REGARDING FAMILY IN TODAY’S SOCIETY?

¿CUAL ES SU OPINION EN RELACION A LA FAMILIA EN LA SOCIEDAD ACTUAL?

Family is the most important institution in our society today. It is the avenue where values, traditions, and beliefs are shared with our young people. I cherish the times I can spend with my family. We are scattered all over the United States, but still manage to maintain strong communication, and it is always a fun time when we get together.

WHAT INFLUENCED YOU TO PURSUE YOUR CAREER IN EDUCATION?

I am a fourth generation educator. My parents were teachers, my twin sister is a teacher, my grandfather was a teacher, and his mother, my great grandmother Nellie Marshall was also a teacher. Nellie was actually a slave freed during the Civil War. She was intelligent enough to recognize the value of education and worked diligently to send her four children to college. My grandfather was one of

those children. I have always believed in the power of education, and especially because of Nellie. HAVE ANY TEACHERS IMPACTED YOU WHILE GROWING UP? AND HOW DO YOU COMPARE TEACHERS FROM YOUR TIME IN SCHOOL TO THE MODERN DAY INSTRUCTOR?

23

I do have fond memories of my teachers! Mrs. Johnson, my third grade teacher, loved me and nurtured me. She helped me understand that being smart was a wonderful attribute. Father Mullins and Sister Anna James taught me patience and humility, and I am still in touch with them today. Mr. Davis was my 7th grade geometry teacher, and he made me work harder than I ever thought I could. As far as modern day instructors go, I believe that they are charged with so much more than their predecessors due to systematic accountability, global issues, and the transformation of our society. Accountability has ensured that all children perform to the level that schools and districts develop, which is a wonderful thing. However, the work is more intense and teachers have to keep up with updates in technology, incorporating new information into their curriculums, and communicating with parents. Many aspects of teaching that formerly fell under parent responsibility are now being included as part of the school’s program.

¿TIENE USTED EN SU MEMORIA ALGUNOS RECUERDOS DE LOS MAESTROS QUE INFLUYERON EN SU VIDA, Y SI ES ASI, COMO COMPARA USTED LOS MAESTROS MODERNOS DE LA ESCUELA SECUNDARIA Y LA UNIVERSIDAD HOY DIA?

“I want to ensure that all children reach their potential, and that they are prepared to contribute to a globally competitive society.”

DO YOU BELIEVE THAT THE PLAYING FIELD IS LEVEL AND ALL WHO WANT AN EDUCATION HAVE THE SAME OPPORTUNITY?

¿CREE USTED QUE TODOS TIENEN LA MISMA OPORTUNIDAD PARA ESTUDIAR?

I believe that we are all working toward that end, but no, the field is not level. Poverty is still a significant hurdle for so many Americans. Students come with disabilities and non-proficiency in English language. We’re farther along than we have been, and we’re moving in a positive direction, but there is still a long way to go.

DO YOU THINK THE SCHOOL SYSTEM IS CONSIDERED TO BE AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE COMMUNITY? IF NOT, WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE TO REINFORCE THIS CONCEPT?

I believe that it is, more so in this community than in others. School leaders—myself included—must take every chance to welcome parents and community members, seek their participation, and ensure that there are authentic opportunities for genuine involvement. ARE THERE ANY INITIATIVES BEING TAKEN UNDER YOUR ADMINISTRATION TO ENCOURAGE FAMILIES TO SUPPORT AND PARTICIPATE IN THE LEARNING PROCESS?

We are asking that every parent find a place that they can participate and contribute to their child’s school: be it as a volunteer, spectator, or assistant. Research has consistently shown that children perform better academically when their parents are involved at school.

10 WAYS

[

TO MAKE YOUR RELATIONSHIP MORE SATISFYING DR . MIGUEL A . GONZ ALE Z

Are you in a committed and satisfying relationship?

CONFUSE INTIMACY WITH SEX. 1. NEVER It is very common to hear couples talk about sex as if it were the same as intimacy. But intimacy is very different from sex. Intimacy should be a precursor to sex; it adds quality and a sense of togetherness, but it is not a substitute. Intimacy requires spending quality time with your partner: sharing, talking, cuddling, holding hands, hugging, kissing. Sex is limited to the sexual act, and despite that some, or perhaps many of us claim to have the best sexual experiences with our partners after a big fight, intimacy is what gives sex a true sense of satisfaction and emotional bonding. Without it, sex becomes mechanical and routinized. RESPECT YOUR DIFFERENCES. 2. That includes your values, beliefs, and cultural expressions. A basic tenet in human interaction is that if you want to be respected and understood, you need to be respectful and understanding. Getting into a relationship with the mindset that you are more

27

]

important or deserving than your partner will only lead to the destruction of the relationship. We all hold certain values and beliefs that make us unique. Some of these are not changeable or even modifiable. It is important to understand your partner’s values, beliefs, and cultural expressions to let your relationship truly flourish. GOES BOTH WAYS. 3. COMMUNICATION Communication must always be honest, clear, and frequent—but being a good listener is a huge part of communicating effectively. No one in the relationship should have a monopoly on communication. True interaction requires that you listen with interest, allowing your partner to express himself or herself fully and freely. Often, individuals do not talk about the issues that bother them out of fear of their partner’s reaction. In problem solving of any kind, avoidance is not a substitute for good communication. Honesty leads to trust, and trust is the foundation of any relationship. If you avoid talking about issues that separate you from

your loved one in hopes the issues will disappear, you will be disappointed. Speculation and mind-reading take over, and the problems only fester. Listen without defending and speak without offending. Communication isn’t just an important part of a relationship; it is one of the pillars that keep the relationship from crumbling. DON’T JUST TALK THE TALK; WALK THE WALK. 4. Now that you are communicating, it is critical that your words match up with your actions. Telling your partner that you love them is meaningless if you are not backing up your words with actions. Apologizing for having done something wrong will amount to nothing if you continue repeating the same behavior that prompted the first apology. Credibility is precious and like trust, when you lose it, it is very difficult to get it back. Mean what you say and say what you mean. ACCEPT EACH OTHER’S SHORTCOMINGS. 5. Stop expecting perfection from your partner. By definition, human beings are not perfect; we make mistakes and hurt others with our actions and words. Be present for your partner in the good and the bad times. The fact is, nobody is perfect; and that includes you. Work through difficult moments together without judgments and unrealistic expectations.

6.

SPEND QUALITY TIME TOGETHER. Recent research shows that couples that spend time together, stay together. Couples who don’t actively try to spend time together have divorce rates at 60% higher than couples who do. Of course, if the time spent together is not used to nurture the relationship, neither of you will benefit. Couple’s time is important, especially when there are children in the relationship. It is common that the arrival of a child imposes more demands on the relationship, but couples must really try to make time for themselves. If children become the

only focus of your relationship, the intimacy you have with your partner may suffer. GETTING LOST IN THE RELATIONSHIP. 7. AVOID Being in a relationship does not mean you have to lose your sense of self or your identity. Have friends and a social life. It is important that you recognize your needs. You deserve to have a social life and friends—but so does your partner. Sometimes we need some alone time to reflect, pray, be creative, or to just vegetate. PARENT AS EQUALS. 8. Parenting is one of the most difficult jobs anyone can ever take on. But parenting can also be a source of discord and arguments. Life can often get in the way of raising your children; the demands of work, social interactions, and responsibilities can take a big part of your day. However, parents must work together and find the time to develop and agree to a parenting strategy that is fair, firm and consistent. Children don’t do well when they don’t have a consistent disciplinary structure. They need parental expectations that they can follow and depend on. Mixed messages are not healthy for children—or for parents. If you and your partner speak with one voice and as equals, your home will be harmonious. THREE IS A CROWD. 9. Unless you’re seeking help from a couple’s therapist, you don’t want to involve other people in your relationship. Relationships have a life and a rhythm of their own—they may not make sense to people on the outside looking in. Relationships don’t do well if they are injected with third-party opinions. So, it is incumbent on both of you not to let others run your relationship. If you’re having a disagreement with your partner, work it out within the relationship. Remain independent from anyone who wants to inject an opinion about your relationship. It’s your duty to decide if a relationship is right for you.

GO TO BED WITH TECHNOLOGY. 10. DON’T Technology is everywhere and we might as well embrace it. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t manage its use and application. Technology should help you manage your life, not take over your life. Face-to-face communication and social interaction—even if it is through video chat—must not be substituted by texting or emailing. Body language often speaks louder than verbal communication. Much is lost when you are not able to physically see your partner. You need visuals to connect verbal communication with non-verbal communication; you need it to understand your partner’s emotional expressions and mood. For communication to be effective and for the relationship to remain strong, you must give your partner undivided attention.

THINGS TO DO

LOCAL FOODIE

HIGHLIGHT:

MARCO DINO’S

RISTORANTE VIC TORIA SANZ

Located in the same building that housed the original Sanford Herald Newspaper, Marco Dino’s is a lovely haven for food lovers who like a bit of grandeur. Though Marco Dino’s opened in 2012, No major renovations have been done since the building first opened in 1910. The original hard wood floors and tin ceilings remain—giving this restaurant a classic backdrop for its laid-back atmosphere. The Mediterranean Pizza arrived to us from straight out the oven. We had to wait a bit for it, but the wait was worth it. Piping hot, and fulfilling that cheese craving all true pizza lovers search for, this was split between two people and was reasonably priced at $12. The pizza was accompanied by the Bleu Cheese and Bacon Mac: a $5 appetizer adventurous enough to give us a run for our money. The bacon added a gratifying smoky character to the mac and cheese—toss in a bit of the piquant edge that bleu cheese offers, and let’s just say there weren’t any leftovers. I finished my meal by ordering an old fashioned, neat. The whiskey was superb and fared at a better price than many other establishments with less than half the ability to make a good drink. So, what’s the verdict? We weren’t expecting much from the façade of the restaurant, but from the moment we entered to the moment we left, we were pleasantly surprised. Try Marco Dino’s yourself by visiting Magnolia Square, in the heart of downtown Sanford. 31
