JAN MOREL

August 2017 Special Edition

Vicoustic is proud to present a special edition about our dear invited designer, with whom we share about eight years of friendship, work and collaboration - Jan Morel. Jan is a studio designer that combines an awesome aesthetic mind with an acoustic intuition, and that is why he can solve a studio since looks to acoustic and audio performance. He is one of the world’s leading recording studio designers, and in his Portfolio he has names such as David Guetta, Hardwell, NOTO Philadelphia and Martin Garrix.

This special relation with Vicoustic was born in 2008/2009 from the need to complement studios with the perfect acoustic desk, and he explains ‘After many years of building desks we found out the desks are an obstacle for the acoustic control in the rooms. This was the moment to start thinking about desks that support the acoustic of the room.’ At that time Vicoustic’s CEO, César Carapinha, was also fascinated about this new concept because, as he explains, ‘normally acoustic treatment is applied to other materials than furniture. Since the desks are in the sweet spot – the most important place in a recording studio – we think it’s very import to have it acoustically treated.’ The opportunity was born and Jan started designing the new studio desks with controlled acoustics. Jan enthusiastically remembered the process of innovation and explain ‘From here we made the Wave desk with integrated bass trapping and diffusing. The Wing Desk has an unique design that kills all the reflections around it.’ The opportunity remains and the innovation keeps it’s progress towards some more upcoming furniture material. While these won’t come to the acoustic spotlight, Jan speaks about the thrilling new Hardwell Studio on The Netherlands Antilles, regarding a ‘design in a nice wooden ambiance style with JStand Wing Desk in wood and a lot of Flexi Waves’ and the Abraham Mateo project in Madrid with white Flexi Waves and Wave Desk in a ‘futuristic style’ state of art. In this special edition, you can appreciate some Portfolio about the JStands, some before&after from his latest work in the NOTO studio in Philadelphia and a look at some of his projects.

"After many years of building and thinking of standard study theses, more and more came to the fore that there was a lot of negative influence on the acoustics desks, especially at the sweetspot. By thinking carefully and following some ideas on paper I went to Vicoustic and asked them if they could do the designs to production models. They have taken full enthusiasm and have achieved the plans. The result is amazing. At the moment, the program is expanded with an additional desk, monitor stand, side bays for 19 "equipment and stand-alone bass traps. All this happens under the brand JStand powered by Vicoustic. “ Jan Morel for DJ Mag NL
