FIRE-RESISTANT ROXUL INSULATIONS HELP DELAY THE SPREAD OF FLAMES Roxul’s non-combustible insulations provide additional time for homeowners and firefighters ORLANDO (January 12, 2011) – When fire strikes a home, every second counts. Suddenly, the choice of insulation used in the home becomes a critical factor in terms of escape time, property damage and environmental impact. Unlike other insulations that may actually fuel fire and cause it to spread, both Roxul® Safe’n’Sound™, an acoustical insulation for interior walls, and Roxul® ComfortBatt®, a superior thermal insulation for exterior walls, are non-combustible and can withstand up to 2,150 degrees Fahrenheit. Roxul insulations are made of stone wool, a combination of natural basalt rock and recycled slag. Since they are made from stone, they possess the fire-resistant characteristics of stone, giving homeowners an added level of comfort and safety, while providing the benefits of superior thermal and acoustical insulation. On average, it would take two hours for Roxul insulations to begin to be affected by a house fire. In comparison, other types of insulation batts will completely melt in just over 40 minutes, and certain insulations combust in as little as 20 minutes (according to ASTM E119 fire testing). This marked difference in fire resistance gives homeowners using Roxul insulations extra time to get out of their home while allowing for additional time for the fire department to arrive. “When properly installed, Roxul has been shown to effectively delay the spread of fire which, in turn, may give homeowners a better chance of survival,” said Mark Bromiley, product manager for Roxul. “Installing Roxul can serve as a preventative measure against fire damage.” -more-

Roxul offers two distinct types of fire-resistant insulation that help make every room in a home safer, quieter and more energy-efficient. Roxul ComfortBatt is thermal insulation for use in exterior walls, attics and crawlspaces, and basements. It provides consistent indoor temperatures and energy savings throughout the year. At R15 for 2x4” construction, R23 for 2x6” construction, and R28 for 2x8” construction, Roxul ComfortBatt provides improved levels of energy efficiency, and creates a comfortable indoor environment. Roxul Safe’n’Sound is soundproofing insulation for use in interior walls, ceilings and floors. Safe’n’Sound provides an additional layer of protection and comfort while minimizing noise transfer due to its high density and non-directional fiber makeup. Safe‘n’Sound is ideal for soundproofing a bathroom, bedroom, home theater, laundry room, nursery or recording studio. Whether building or renovating, Roxul Safe‘n’Sound and Roxul ComfortBatt are smart choices for fireresistant home insulation.
