Acest alchimist nu are în laboratorul său ierbare magice, rădăcini de mătrăgună şi vase pentru dizolvantul universal. Acest alchimist nu a confecţionat piatra filosofală. Acest alchimist nu doreşte obţinerea vieţii veşnice pentru sine, ci pentru locurile şi panoramele pe care le întâlneşte. Le capturează cu ochiul său magic, le duce în sălaşul său, unde, prin procedee numai de el ştiute, le stoarce şi de ultimul strop de culoare, le împietreşte în timp şi le conferă darul eternităţii. Roadele muncii sale sunt frânturi din lumea noastră, pe care însă nu le putem atinge, ci doar visa, sunt chintesenţa supremei solitudini. Aşa sfidează alchimistul iureşul necontenit al contemporaneităţii. Acest alchimist este Arkadius Zagrabski.

This Alchemist does not have magic herbariums, mandrake roots or recipients for the universal dissolvent in his laboratory. This Alchemist has not made the philosopher’s stone. This Alchemist does not wish to attain eternal life for himself, but for the places and landscapes he encounters. He captures with his magic eye, takes them in his shelter, where, by processes only known to him, he squeezes them of the entire colour they have, petrifies them in time and imbues them with the gift of eternality. This is the way the Alchemist defies the relentless rush of the contemporary world. This Alchemist is Arkadius Zagrabski.

Arkadius Zagrabski s-a născut în 1977 şi până la vârsta de 4 ani a crescut în Bydgoszcz, Polonia. Familia lui Zagrabski s-a mutat în Germania, în Dusseldorf. Zagrabski şi-a petrecut primii 28 de ani într-o călătorie lungă de explorare, încercând multe forme artistice de expresie. Dar, abia în octombrie 2006, când a împlinit vârsta de 28 de ani, şi-a descoperit talentul fotografic, o formă de artă în care şi-a găsit puterea personală. Această descoperire i-a stârnit interesul profesional pentru fotografie, interes care s-a materializat la începutul lui 2007. În prezent, Zagrabski recunoaşte că fotografia este mai mult decât un hobby, este o parte integrantă din viaţa lui, care îl defineşte ca persoană.

Arkadius Zagrabski was born in 1977 and spent the first four years of his childhood in Bydgoszcz, Poland. Zagrabski’s family relocated to Germany, and he has been living in the Dusseldorf area. Zagrabski spent the first 28 years of his life on a self-exploratory expedition where he tried his hand at many forms of artistic expression. But it wasn’t until October of 2006, when the artist was 28 years old, that he uncovered a raw knack he had for photography, an art form in which he found personal strength. This self-discovery led to a serious professional interest in photography that culminated at the beginning of 2007. Today, Zagrabski admits that photography is much more than a mere hobby, to the artist, it is an integral part of his life, and of defining who he is.

My favorite photography genres are architectural and street photography. In the first type, I focus not only on architectural products, but also on more indicating endless themes in these structures. After a long time, I realized that I like working on the second theme, too. I simply want to take picture of people in these outdoor environments. I achieve street photographing compact cameras which don’t disturb people. In 90’s I used analog types (Praktika PL). In recent years, I used digital types. I prefer monochrome photographs because, in my opinion, a “photo” is a black & white “thing”.
Genurile mele de fotografie preferate sunt fotografia de arhitectură şi de stradă. În ceea ce priveşte primul tip, mă concentrez nu numai pe arhitectura propriu-zisă, dar şi pe nenumăratele teme ale acestor structuri. După un timp mai îndelungat, mi-am dat seama că îmi place să fac şi fotografie de stradă. Pur şi simplu îmi place să fotografiez oamenii care fac parte din aceste cadre. Mi-am achiziţionat aparate pentru fotografia de stradă astfel încât să nu deranjez pe nimeni. În anii ‘90 foloseam aparate analogice (Praktika PL). În ultimii ani, am folosit aparate digitale. Prefer fotografiile monocrome, deoarece, consider că o „fotografie” este un „lucru” alb-negru.

I have been a photographer since 1984. I used to shoot only black and white films, developing them in my darkroom. Now, I do the same thing but in Photoshop and with digital raw files. Most of my early works are street shots with people as a main inspiration. During that time I was also working as a newspaper reporter but today I am more interested in landscapes. I participated in many group exhibitions and I also had a few solo exhibitions. Today, I post my pictures on web sites like Art Limited, Deviant Art, Photo net, Fotozine etc.
Practic meseria de fotograf din 1984. Atunci, făceam numai fotografii albnegru pe care le developam în camera obscură. În prezent, fac acleaşi lucru, însă în Photoshop sau cu filtre RAW. Majoritatea fotografiilor mele de început abordează genul fotografie de stradă, oamenii constituind sursa mea principală de inspiraţie. Înainte, lucram şi ca reporter, dar, în prezent, sunt interesat mai mult de peisaje. Am participat la multe expoziţii de grup şi am avut, de asemenea, şi câteva expoziţii solo. Acum îmi expun fotografiile pe site-uri precum Art Limited, Deviant Art, Photo net, Fotozine etc.

The artistic environment in which I grew up has given me an appetite for image. When I first started painting and take part in expositions, I was at kindergarten. I have been studying photography since the 5th grade, first at the Baia Mare Art High school. My father gave me a Smena. I was very excited, especially by those symbols on the camera, which helped me, as a child, to estimate the shutter speed and the focal length. I took pictures of my colleagues. Later, in my first year of high school, I received a Zenit. After being explained some basic instructions, I started practicing over and over. I was studying structures (leaves, trees, walls), and then portraits. Afterwards, I learnt how to develop a film and to enlarge photos. It was exciting to spend so many hours in the photo laboratory. In high school, I studied in-depth the portrait in photography, drawing and painting. I enjoyed it so much that I kept studying it. In college, I accidentally ended by studying nudes. I discovered that I liked it as much as the portraits and I started to practice it. I have chosen photography as my hobby many years ago and now I earn a living from it. More and more people are interested in photography. I wish that as many people as possible see and appreciate my works which will always illustrate my artistic evolution.
Mediul artistic în care am crescut mi-a deschis apetitul pentru imagine. Eram la grădiniţă când am început să pictez şi să particip la expoziţii. Din clasa a 5-a am început studiile în cadrul liceului de artă din Baia Mare. Am primit de la tata un aparat Smena. Am fost foarte încântată mai ales de acele simboluri de pe el, care mă ajutau pe mine, copil fiind, să apreciez distanţa focală si diafragma. Primele cadre au fost cu colegii din clasă. Mai târziu, în primul an de liceu am primit un Zenit. Mi s-au explicat noţiunile de bază şi am început să fac exerciţii peste exerciţii în aprofundarea lui. Studiam structuri (frunze, copaci, ziduri) ca mai apoi să încep cu portretele. Mai târziu am început să învăţ să developez filmele şi să măresc fotografiile. A fost fascinant să stau ore întregi în laboratorul foto. Tot în liceu am aprofundat portretul, atât fotografic, cât şi în desen şi pictură. Mi-a plăcut aşa mult încât am rămas ca studiu în zona umană. La facultate, din întâmplare am ajuns să încerc şi nuduri. Am văzut că îmi place în aceeaşi măsură astfel încât am exersat în acest sens. Sunt mulţi ani de când am ales fotografia ca pasiune şi a ajuns să îmi devină şi meserie. Arta fotografică devine din ce în ce mai cunoscută şi multe persoane au această pasiune. Îmi doresc ca lucrările mele să fie cunoscute şi văzute de cât mai multă lume, şi mereu să se vadă o evoluţie.

On his return to Australia, James formalized his technical expertise studying a Bachelor of Arts degree in commercial photography at RMIT in Melbourne, which resulted in James’ technical proficiency and professional eye for both light sensibility and detail.
Când s-a întors în Australia, James şi-a consolidat cunoştinţele în domeniu, luându-şi licenţa în fotografia comercială la universitatea RMIT din Melbourne, în urma căreia şi-a format competenţe tehnice şi un ochi profesionist pentru lumină şi detaliu.
James’s experience combined with his passion for visual conceptualization paved his way to becoming a well recognized Australian photographer both commercially and editorially.

2. Practici mai multe genuri de fotografie. Pe care îl preferi şi de ce? Îmi place să fotografiez oameni şi maşini în locuri neobişnuite. De aceea, încerc să ies ori de câte ori pot pentru că nu îmi place să stau închis toată ziua într-un studio. Totuşi, îmi petrec majoritatea timpului în studio. Asta e!
3. Cum ţi-ai descrie stilul şi cum a evoulat acesta în timp?
Sunt adeptul tehnicilor simple de iluminare combinate cu HMI. Stilul meu este într-o continuă evoluţie întrucât învăţ mereu tehnici noi, legate de compoziţie sau iluminare. De aceea îmi place atât de mult această profesie.
4. Îţi place foarte mult creativitatea. Care sunt sursele tale de inspiraţie? De obicei, urmărind munca altor fotografi şi descoperind noi tehnici şi stiluri, găsesc diverse surse de inspiraţie, ceea ce mă impulsionează şi mai mult. Îmi place să privesc o fotografie şi mă gândesc cum a fost realizată. Apoi, voi încerca şi eu să obţin acelaşi efect. În această industrie, învăţăm unii de la alţii.

Te poţi descurca cu un kit de bază. Un echipament simplu te obligă să fii din ce în ce mai creativ. Sunt foarte norocos deoarece am la dispoziţie echipamentul dorit care mă ajută foarte mult să experimentez.
6. Esţi pentru sau împotriva programelor de editare foto?
Cred că, în prezent, fotografiile sunt bune datorită retuşărilor. Dacă cineva are timpul necesar pentru un cadru perfect, atunci se poate considera foarte norocos.

8. Un mesaj pentru cititorii noştri… Lucraţi ca asistent pentru fotograful preferat, dar şi pentru alţi fotografi, cel puţin 3 ani. Astfel puteţi să le spionaţi tehnicile de iluminare şi mai primiţi şi bani pentru asta. Fotografiaţi, experimentaţi folosind diverse tehnici. Începeţi cu o cameră obscură şi lăsaţi să pătrundă lumina încet în jurul subiectului vostru. Puteţi să direcţionaţi lumina în diverse unghiuri să vedeţi ce obţineţi. Să nu încetaţi niciodată să experimentaţi. Construiţi-vă un stil propriu pentru ca ceilalţi să vă recunoscă cu uşurinţă fotografiile.
1. When did you decide to become a photographer? 2003 when I assisted the highly regarded World Class Photographer Mats Cordt.
2. You do multiple types of photography. Which one is your favorite and why? I like to shoot People and Cars in unusual landscapes. This gets me outdoors as much as possible as I am not very fond of being cooped up in a studio all day. However, the studio seems to be the place where I am mostly. Them the breaks!
3. How would you describe your photographic style and how it has developed over the years?
My style is using very basic flash lighting techniques mixed with HMI. My style is constantly evolving as I learn new techniques everyday whether it be composition/ lighting. This is why I enjoy the profession so much.
4. You have a passion for creativity. What inspires you in taking a good shot? Usually, perusing other photographers work and being exposed to other techniques and styles really inspires me to push on. I like to look at a photograph and really study how they obtained that particular impression. Then, I will try to incorporate it in my next shoot. Everyone learns from everyone in this industry.
5. How much does equipment count for a profes-
sional photographer?
Usually, you can get by with a very basic kit. The less you have the more creative you can get. However, I am now lucky enough to have all the desirable equipment at my disposal which helps when experimenting.
6. Are you pro or against editing and conversions programs?
I find in this day and age your photographs are only as good as your retouching. If anyone has time getting the perfect shot on the day then they are very lucky.
7. Which photographer do you admire?
Mats Cordt, Ansell Adams, Terry Richardson, Annie Leibovitz.
8. A message to our readers...
Assist your favorite photographer and others for at least 3 years. Assisting is really spying on other photographers lighting techniques and getting paid to do it! Keep shooting, keep experimenting with different lighting techniques. Start with a completely black room and slowly introduce light in and around your subject. Feel free to point the light in all different angles to see what you get. And never stop experimenting. In saying that, make sure you get yourself a signature ‘style’ so people can eventually recognize your images the moment they see them.

Voiam să împărtăşesc cu ceilalţi viziunea mea asupra lumii. Voiam să îmi imortalizez visele – să le transpun în realitate. Iar fotografia putea face asta pentru mine. Iată-mă, mai înţelept, cu un stil îmbunătăţit şi o carte despre portretul artistic publicată anul acesta, bucurându-mă încă de această meserie. Mi-am dat seama că pasiunea mea este împărţită între munca cu modelele incluzând-o pe cea în studio şi explorarea locurilor înconjurătoare. Am scris articole, am intervievat artişti pentru Univers d’Artistes (UdA) – pentru blogul de fotografie al lui Carrie Leigh, de la revista NUDE. Am publicat recent câteva fotografii în ediţia de vară a revistei şi sunt foarte onorat de acest lucru. Le mulţumesc foarte mult celor de la Chris St James & Unbearable Lightness pentru că mi-au arătat această cale. De asemenea, vă mulţumesc vouă – tuturor celor care au muncit alături de mine la publicarea cărţii. De la modele care şi-au pus în practică ideile, la asistenţii care m-au sfătuit în legătură cu noţiunile teoretice, şi la alţii care m-au învăţat programare – vă sunt recunoscător tuturor. O imagine face cât o mie de cuvinte… Fermecat de tot ce se iveşte în drum, călătorul poposit pe malul fluviului nu va şti ce să admire mai întâi… unduirea stufului în bătaia vântului de seară, varietatea păsărilor şi a vegetaţiei sau aşezările pescăreşti de-a lungul canalelor. Nici unul din cei ce vor merge pe aici nu va uita pescuitul, plimbările cu barca sau relaxarea de lângă vreun cort, unde deasupra focului fierbe în voie o ciorbă pescărească, adevărată, cu apă de Dunăre…
The plans and the building of this objective were realized by the English engineers Ch. Hartley and M. Engelhardt who also made the digging and the maintenance plans of the Sulina branch. The lighthouse was built in two stages and was finalized in 1870, being the property of the European Commission of the Danube.
Planurile şi construcţia acestui obiectiv au fost realizate de către inginerii englezi Ch. Hartley şi M. Engelhardt care au participat, de asemenea, şi la realizarea planurilor de construire a canalului navigabil precum şi a celor de întreţinere permanentă a braţului Sulina. Construcţia farului este realizată în două etape şi finalizată în anul 1870, fiind proprietatea Comisiei Europene a Dunării.

I am 20 years old and I use 3-4 cameras, depending on the desired effect. Thus, I use Nikon D40 when I want to take clear and sharp photos, Exact vx II v6, Zenit 11 and Diana F+ for all the artistic and original photos. I should also mention Polaroid Impulse for snapshots. I would like to send you more series on the general theme Man and Society. This series is a reflection of some general acts, a little feminist, treating a happening which may be tragic for a lady: a fall (either psychic or physic) – think what means for a woman to fall on the street, to walk with a scraped knee or with ragged pantyhose. In what follows, the series describes the ups and downs of a woman, such as the initial moment, the imbalance moment – tripping over different things, falling, hurting, the panic and then returning to the initial moment. This process is illustrated by 7 photos, each of them representing one single moment. The water is the symbol of the personal existential space of every person. I can’t help showing you a special and powerful series which is far away from the idea of magic and beauty. Summarizing, - these photos illustrate the worldwide known Darwin’s Theory of Evolution. According to this theory, man descends from animals. This conception was rendered by the bear heads as a symbol for the “animal” party inside us. The metaphor goes further, suggesting that, the evolution in an organized environment and a normal society can abolish these animal instincts. - Furthermore, the metaphor has two interpretations, also trying to visualize another human side: people’s mental disorders. The head doesn’t match with the rest of the body and moves – a mental disorder. - 3 portrait photos – 3 planned photos, and there is a psychological reason: what we want to be and what we really are (housewives or people with a certain social status).

Numele meu este Catrinel Cotae, sunt studentă la Facultatea de Arhitectură şi Urbanism Ion Mincu Bucureşti în anul trei şi boboc la UNARTE secţia foto-video. Am 20 de ani şi folosesc vreo 3-4 aparate foto, în funcţie de efectul pe care vreau să-l obţin. Astfel, Nikonul D40 îl am pentru fotografii clare, pline de textură, iar Exacta-ul vx II v6, Zenit-ul 11, şi Diana F+ pentru tot ce înseamnă inedit şi artistic. Şi să nu uit, Polaroid-ul Impulse pentru ceva mai instantaneu. Aş fi tentată să vă trimit mai multe serii, bazate pe tema generală om şi societate. Cea pe care mizez este o reliefare a unor fapte generale, puţin feministe, care abordează un eveniment relativ tragic pentru o doamnă: căzătura (fie psihică or fizică) – ce este mai tragic pentru o femeie să cadă pe stradă, să umble cu genunchii juliţi ori ciorapii cu firul dus. După cum urmează, seria descrie urcuşul şi coborâşul unei femei, şi anume starea iniţială, momentul agitării, momentul de dezechilibru - împiedicarea în diverse elemente, căzătura, aferentă ei, lovitura, momentul de panică şi apoi revenirea la starea iniţială. Aceasta se desfăşoară pe durata a circa 7 fotografii, fiecare dintre acestea reprezentând un moment. Apa în care este fotografiat modelul reprezintă spaţiul personal de existenţă a fiecărei persoane. Nu am să mă pot abţine în a nu vă prezenta o serie deosebită, brută, departe de ideea de feeric şi frumos a unei fotografii. Pe scurt, - ideea vizează descrierea unei teorii cunoscute pe plan mondial: Teoria Darwiniană a Evoluţiei. Conform ei este de înţeles că omul îşi trage seva din animal. Mergând pe această idee, am abordat o realizare de acest tip, mimând rolul „animalului” din noi prin intermediul capetelor de urs. Metafora merge mai departe, sugerând că, totuşi, evoluţia într-un mediu organizat şi într-o societate normală, poate înfrâna aceste instincte pe care omul le păstrează în fire. - De asemenea, metafora se poate aborda pe două direcţii, încercând să vizualizeze latura de boală mintală a omului. Capul este în dezacord cu restul corpului şi cu restul mişcărilor -> existenţa unei dereglări la nivelul minţii. -3 fotografii tip portret – 3 fotografii înscenate iar motivul este de natură psihologică: ceea ce vrem să fim şi ceea ce suntem (gospodine sau oameni cu un oarecare statut social).

I have been interested in photography since I was 16-17 years old when I was given a compact digital camera, Trust 3.3 Mp ... a trifle. After a year, I needed to develop my artistic talent, so I started studying and I bought a professional Minolta. Later, I bought a Canon 40D and I’m still trying to improve my equipment. Usually, I go out and take pictures of nature which is my most precious subject.
Pasiunea mea pentru fotografie a început acum 4 -5 ani când am primit cadou un aparat de fotografiat compact, Trust 3.3 Mp ... mai bine zis o săpunieră. După un an simţeam nevoia de a îmi extinde latura artistică, aşa că m-am pus pe învăţat şi am reuşit să îmi achiziţionez un Minolta profesional pe film. După ceva timp am reuşit să îmi achiziţionez aparatul actual şi tot încerc să mă dezvolt. Deseori ies să fac fotografii în natură, aşa că acesta este subiectul meu cel mai de preţ.
