NEW LIMIT FOR MIRAFLORES Professor: Emilio Tuñón, Jose María Garcia Subject: Urban Development, Residence, Lanscape Location: Miraflores peninsula, Córdoba (Spain)
If we analyze the extensive trajectory of the buildings of Koolhaas, we can see that there are many similarities in the way he treats and develops his projects in relation to cinema and architecture: both refer to ideas, spaces, routes, and even predetermined frames.
The site proposed by the organization of the contest lacked interest: in addition to the nerve center of the city, in the old Miraflores peninsula, it did not offer great possibilities for the context. Faced with other proposals that were limited to proposing moderate solutions, Koolhaas decides to take advantage of the potential of the place and develops a perfectly rectangular volume that aims to consolidate the EAST-WEST axis of the peninsula, dividing it into two, connecting the city center and establishing multiple and varied dialogues with the city, such as the mosque of Cordoba or the urban landscape of the historic center of the city.

The proposal consists of a longitudinal volume that takes advantage of the location proposed by Rem Koolhaas for its Cordoba Congress Center project. It establishes a relationship with the peninsula as a retaining wall of the urban fabric from the Miraflores peninsula. The set proposed acts as a receiver of the traffic that accesses the peninsula through the bridge of the north, elevating said passage and allowing the development of a freer public use than the one that could be previously developed in the area, crossing the building through the first floor.

This is how the greatness and impact of the building proposed by Koolhaas take over the context, detaching itself from it to reinvent it while enriching it: the city of Córdoba does not need another new operation that adds to the others, but a forceful volume that revitalizes it, extolling its intrinsic beauty. victor fernandez gil | portfolio 2022 | cordoba miraflores | prof. emilio tuñón

INVESTMENT LAB Professor: Federico Soriano Subject: Urban Development Location: Mendoza (Argentina)
On a plot north of the city of Mendoza, east of Argentina and close to the border with Chile, the possibility of creating a space that reactivates the area is proposed to us. The proposal put forward by the client is based on maximizing the profitability of the plot with the activity. Through a group investigation, we were able to see that the area is very absent from commercial and recreational use premises. Thanks to this work we were able to observe the needs, the possibilities, and the strategies that we can develop in this place. The proposed structure is based on moduleability. The need to be versatile and to be able to offer any type of proposal developed by the client. Thus the main structure and prefabricated metal joints connecting rods form hyperstatic arises. The uses and certain compositions developed by each are introduced into the plot resulting from this scaffolding. We have arrived at this proposal, based on the occupational factor imposed by the technical code and trying to maximize it to get higher returns, trying to leave the smallest possible footprint if you can transfer ownership.

In this way we can create these two main volumes, which house the maximum constructible surface, which will be joined thanks to a scaffold structure that will sew the blocks, housing the new available uses. For greater flexibility, communications and facilities are brought to the outside, which close the towers that can be seen inside the building. Thanks to the manifesto that we have proposed, we can make the objectives of the project clear. Proposed as a laboratory that allows us to see the development of this type of modular building and thus be able to extend this model.

Finally, we need to define the house. Following the steps above, we enable the best places in the plot to place the house and depending on the needs of the occupants. Enclosures strategy follows the same as that of the commercial premises, the occupant can decide which panels or external elements to use and expand the surface. Public spaces in turn can be adapted and thus occupy interstitial spaces and give them the use of public access.

THE CONTINENTAL, DETROIT Team: Paloma Gómez, Marta del Pozo & Victor Fernandez Professor: Dirk Denison, Philip Kafka (Prince Concepts) - Fall 2019 Subject: Reform, Community Development, Urban strategy Location: Detroit, Michigan
victor fernandez gil | portfolio 2022 | the continental, detroit | prof. dirk denison
Located in the former Continental Motors factory in Detroit, the rehabilitation and revitalization of this abandoned area of the city are proposed. Located next to the current Chrysler factory, it is a privileged location due to its proximity to the most prosperous areas of the city. The intervention aims to be as simple and progressive as possible. The main idea is to create a community based on cooperative and sustainability, starting with an annual festival that aims to be the main source of income for the community and thus be able to grow.

Landscape Intervention:
Landscape here has a determining role since it tries to give unity to the place. Tried to make as little intervention as possible and let it be her, nature, the one that reigns over this place. In this way, the only intervention that would be carried out would be the water line that surrounds the site. Like the Muslim culture, the water serves to guide us through the place, either by water channels or by its sound. For this reason, this water line that takes advantage of the cracks in the ground gave us the support for the different interventions in the place, in addition to helping to drain the water that can reach the plot.

SUMMER HOUSING IN ALMERIA, SPAIN Professor: Jose Antonio Ramos Subject: Housing, Urban Planning, Construction Location: Carboneras, Almeria (Spain)
The Cabo de Gata has been chosen, in Almería. Specifically, the town of Carboneras and its environment, variable, in addition to its enclave on the Mediterranean coast, for being a productive town, which is the agricultural field, a desalination water treatment plant, a thermal power plant and a cement plant. It has also suffered tourist problems of great impact. Three options of choice are raised about it: residential performances in the agricultural zone, integrated with the population or in the productive zone. As well as others, they consider how alternative experiments to tourism.

The intimate resistance next to the opening of the world and the objective reality that transcends it. These two opposing movements occur in contemplation and their place is withdrawal.

_ADVANCED MODELING Professor: Alphonso Peluso Illinois Institute of Technology - ARCH 436 Content: Grasshopper, Kangaroo, Karamba3D, DIVA, UMI, Biomorpher...
The purpose of this course focuses on the 3D modeling of complex geometric patterns that can be introduced into the architecture design. The resulting different forms will help us to be able to imagine new spaces, sculptural objects or any type of solution of any scale that is desired, understanding the difference between the virtual and the physical. The various models cover from parametric design, Generative Design, Responsive Modeling and Form Finding. Through these new computer-assisted methods, we can define specific parameters of the final product, solve their efforts, even define the qualities of the final product. It is about expanding our acquired skills and applying them in different models, applying research and experimentation. It’s about exploring these new tools to reach the design limit. To exploit the structures to their limits, reduce thicknesses and reduce construction costs. The purpose of this is to create a proper way to apply the software tools and concepts discussed in the course. In addition, the physical creation of real 3D models is joined through the use of 3D printers, through FDM filament or powder printing.
