THEMED PROJECT Urban farm MA in Landscape Architecture Greenwich University

U rban Farm overview The brief was to respond to a set theme. This theme was to design a space in the city of London which could be used for urban food production. I chose a derelict space by the docks and created 3 pyramids. This is an underutilised area of land on the docks of London. The site is made up of three pyramids, three green houses, community orchards, bee hive farms, chicken runs, allotments, market gardens and a water basin.

food production Inside each pyramid there are big composting bays where compostable waste from all around London can be transported down the Thames an into the site to be composted and redistributed. The heat from the compost will also heat the allotments on the outside adding to the diversity of vegetable growth available. Some of the pyramids will also be used as mushroom production spaces. The orchards will be able to produce apples which can be sold to local businesses.

connectivity The water basin provides the opportunity to allow the Thames enter the site allowing transport boats in to carry compost waist in and out of the site from and to all over London. Also the transport of food products is possible using the Thames as a highway.
ecology The site contains many beehives for honey production, the bees provide pollination for apple trees and vegetable production.
s u s ta i n a b i l i t y The idea of the urban farm is to help London provide for itself and be self sustainable. It produces food, creates habitats for animals and insects, recycles and reuses waste and water, uses available resources for example the river Thames, community orchards for local education and well being, chickens lay eggs their faeces becomes fertiliser, this is then spread on allotments and market gardens then eatables grow and waist vegetables become chicken food.

T heme project design in context With this project we were ask to take a site on the Thames and give a design response to the space keeping in mind the context of the surrounding architecture, characteristics any other feature. I chose the Tate gallery and my response was to reflect the lines and simplicity in the design of the gallery itself. I also created a design that could be viewed as a piece of art in its own right which responds to the function of the Tate gallery. The piece was a visual response to the concept of empty space.

ALD PROJECT Advanced Landscape Design MA in Landscape Architecture Greenwich University
3
ALD overview This project was the main module and focus of the MA. We were required to pick a site over 5ha and create a design response. The site chosen was the Old Guinness factory and Twyford Abbey at Park Royal London. By taking Guinness as the main subject matter and inspiration behind the design and also the Irish landscape, its development and characteristics it was possible to combine both of these to create a place of dreams, wonder and beauty. The location and its surroundings were also major factors in the design. The site is surrounded by residential buildings and commercial industrial estates. It was necessary for the site to provide education, leisure, health and wellbeing. The site also acts as a filtration system for grey water coming from Park Royal industrial estate where it will be treated in the wetlands on site and cleaned. The site acts as one large SUDS system.
Final masterplan
Canal Basin for canal community access to the park. Half of the basin will become astilling pond for Park Royal gathered grey water
Rills, cutting through transporting grey water Large water falls to the rest of the site creating drama and function
Small bridge for site circulation

Raised building structures used as viewing platform of the site and retail and recreationa and studio units. These will be turfed and planted green roofs
issues Park Royal industrial estate where the site is located is highly populated. The inductrial estate is a place that has no soul. It is very run down and does not provide for the basic needs of its community such as health of body mind and spirit. These issues needed to be addressed in the design.
Wetland area treating grey water from Park Royal and boosting ecology and natural habitat in the area. This space can also be used by local schools adjacent to the park for education and also as an outdoor theatre space
Community orchard to be used as education and job training
Multi purpose playing fields to encourage excerise and good health for mind and body for the employees of Diageo and Park Royal businesses

Greenhouses for urban food production and education and rehabilitation for nearby Hospital. Surrounded by beautiful white garden planting to be used as recreation by the employees of Diaego but also to be used as a garden space enjoyed by the occupants of the Flats at the North of the park
Meadow fields planted with wild meadow flowers to encourage ecology and biodiversity. This will also act as a visual treat as you enter the park from the north entrance
concepts The overriding idea for the design was to developed a space for the people of Park Royal to be fully sustainable, provide a haven away from the busy everyday life activities, to improve health and wellbeing, but also to create a space of dreams, wonder and delight. The overriding theme for the design was ‘Guinness’ and ‘the development of the Irish landscape’. These subjects were taken as the main inspiration behind the visual and atmospheric aspects of the design. The site reflects the process of the pint of Guinness being poured and how it settles over time. This is seen through the planting choices and use of the slow wetland Suds filtration process. The pint is poured and is left to settle before drinking. Over this time frame the layers of brown turn to dark black and finally a white head appears. The Irish landscape was formed from large white glaciers then melt water pours down through the land and finally settles in dark lakes and sea.
Walled garden to house a water feature and new planting scheme based on the original Victorian style but with a modern take. Open to the public amd used for recreation purposes

hydrology plan
Hydrology plays a rather large role in the design of the park. The entire park has water flowing from one end to the other and plays a fictional roll as well as adding to the visual drama. From east to north the water flows by use of gravity. The natural rain water is gathered from the roof tops of the parks building structures and joins the grey water from Park Royal Industrial Estate. Along the journey some of the water is used to irrigate the planting but most ends up as a natural swimming pool.
connectivity There are three main entrances to the park. One at the east side, one at the south and one in the north side of the park. They connect the people of park royal from the east side, The residents from north end and people from outside the area feeding in from the A40 and north circular road. There is easy access from north London, the west and central London. The park will also provide a connection with nature and the natural elements for the people of Park Royal.

ecological There are a large number of newly planted forest trees in the design along with open meadow fields and low lying ground cover shrubs and herbaceous planting. GARDEN OF OPEN THOUGHT Major project DIPLOMA IN GARDEN DESIGN CAPEL MANOR COLLEGE
4
G arden of open T hought overview The idea is to design a garden based on the concept titled ‘emptiness’. What is required: The garden concept should be researched as an exterior three dimensional space but also keeping the idea of a garden in mind. In other words still include certain aspects of a garden such as seating areas, planting, sheltered spots and so on. Under sub headings the idea is to explore empty spaces and discover the actual fundamental components of an empty space. These are then to be considered together with reference to the principles of design to create a garden design that portrays emptiness in a 3 dimensional format but also providing a space of visual and philosophical interest. The space should make you think and wonder. “The visual response should be an experience to illuminate the soul through a journey of calm and tranquility bringing it to life” The exterior three dimensional space as a garden.

a journey through the garden The space is a controlled environment much like ‘the Rohe house’ by Tadao Ando where he blocks out the surroundings using big walls to control nature and the elements to emphasis its beauty. In doing so it becomes a garden of open though where emptiness has been explored and represented in a space to be experienced and hopefully bring us closer to an understanding that an empty space is alot more than four walls and a floor. It is a space of beauty, calm and tranquility, an

MODELS

M odels The formation of the curved surfaces came to fruition through the experimentation of clay. It allowed for the design to take on its more natural informal qualities bringing them to light where as the foam board showed the through contrast of the more formal areas and gave a real insight into the reality of the simplicity of the design. It is here through the development of a model the truth in the design reveals itself.
