ABOUT ME

My roots are essentially British, as I was born and raised in a remote part of southern eastern England, Dungeness. Moving to France at a young age gave me a new perspective, by learning a foreign language and growing accustomed to a different culture. This desire to discover new places, to gain experience and to continously learn have defined my personality. In 2013, I began a new chapter in Denmark, where I recently graduated as an architect from Aarhus School of Architecture. I am now looking for new exciting opportunities and hope to put my skills and abilities to good use.

Beach pavilion - small scale architecture 1st year project - 2011

The fundamental issue in this project was the location. A beach, by its nature, is a vast open space with very few obstacles. In most situations, an architectural concept would be defined in relation to such obstacles; the natural constraints of the land. However, in this case, the concept was defined solely by its function i.e. a beach pavilion. The concept of a ‘seashell’ was the inspiration for the structural layout. Not only due to its obvious relation to the environment, but also for the symbolism of a ‘sense of invitation’. The building, being at the same time, both enclosed and open, welcomes the visitor into its shell, from where it encourages the discovery of the ocean landscape. The outer walls, made out of bare wood, form a protective skin, whilst letting in light and air, so that the visitor, though he may feel protected from the weather, is still able to physically experience the place he is in. The structure gradually follows a spiral pathway up to the final point, from where a panoramic view is unveiled.

Revisiting the salt marshes - a historical landscape 2nd year project - 2011

The site for this project was a vast expanse of marsh lands on the Mediterranean coast of southern France. This environment bears the marks of a territory that was once exploited for its salt, but has since been left to the abundant wildlife which has proliferated on the marsh soil. The idea of the project was to recreate the same geometrical forms that have shaped this landscape; a memory of the marshlands. The design is a reflection upon rectangular shapes – an evocation of the old salt evaporation ponds. This becomes a series of plates sliding above and below each other, giving a sense of depth to this flat territory. These plates are inter-twined and connected in order to form a group, enabling people to live together whilst maintaining a sense of personal space.

The urban horizon - a proposal for collective housing 3rd year project - 2013

This housing project lies on the edge of a highspeed railway. Despite the fact that the passing of a train could be considered a negative factor, there are also positive aspects. One particular aspect being due to the low-rise nature of the rail line environment which creates an open space from where the horizon is visible. In an urban environment, the view of a horizon can often be rare, so the aim of this project was to value this natural horizon. Therefore the apartments are all oriented in the same direction.

aerial view Montpellier city centre

The building is made up of blocks of varying sized apartments, each block separated from the next by a set of outside walkways. These walkways participate in the consideration of the landscape, offering different viewpoints of the horizon depending on ones position.

Becoming Local - an investigation of generative space thesis project - Aarhus School of Architecture - 2016

This thesis project investigates generative space as a means to improve quality of life within the evolving high street. Becoming Local explores the high street as a piece of urban fabric that can participate in the evolution of the city. The project investigates generative spaces, envisaged as places that demonstrate the capacity to flourish and reinvent themselves via the medium of local initiatives. The ambition of the project was not only to design a space but also to design the system which creates these spaces, thus allowing for its evolution. This can potentially lead to a discussion about the capacity of spaces to improve over time as well as the role of the architect within this framework.

The high street as circular economy A study and analyse of the urban fabric of the high street allows for the creation of a complex network consisting of virtual, physical and sensory connections. The combination of these connections creates an infinite number of possibilities. This drawing tries to show a certain level of complexity by layering the links into one representation of the high street. The high street becomes in this way an example of a circular economy

the framework and the narrative the framework: typologies of generative space The project oscillates between two distinct but synergic layers, the infrastructure and the narrative. The infrastructure defines 6 typologies of generative spaces. Each typology highlights one aspect of its character, initiated by the architect in order to activate the space and kickstart its evolution

fluctuating space - market

interactive space - street lighting

participatory space - shared garden

temporary space - pop up cinema

spontaneous space - performance area

the narrative The narrative illustrates the ways in which the project can be understood as a never ending story. These stories are a further investigation into how the framework can be inhabited and how the generated spaces respond to the surrounding environment over time.

the story of the cinema When the outdoor cinema showed its first screenings, people would simply sit on wooden crates. Although this was pleasant enough, it didn’t provide sufficient comfort for some picky customers. As I was only in charge of taking care of the projector, I had some spare time on my hands, and so I took it upon myself to improve the quality of the furniture. Starting with simple wooden crates provided by the restaurant next door, I turned them into stools, then added a back rest. Whilst making the chairs, I discovered a new found passion for wood working. Little by little I perfected the chair and by rotating the legs and adding an arm rest I found the perfect position in which one can enjoy watching a film outdoors whilst reclining comfortably. The cinema, over the course of time, became a renowned location for viewing films in the open air. The wooden structure remains unchanged to this day, but all other elements are in constant motion around it, from the bustle of people, to the re arranging of the chairs, and the every changing scenographic projections. I always enjoy the way the clientele constantly rearrange the furniture according to purpose. Either in disorganized rows for viewing the film or pulled into tighter groups of varying size so that they can discuss the film during the inevitable after-parties...
