Chair’s Message

I

am very pleased to recognize Naz Rayani as our lifetime achievement award winner. He has had a lasting impact on the community through all of his endeavours. I aspire to Naz’s lifetime of giving and look towards a common goal of improving our community throughout the remainder of my term and beyond. In my second year as chair, it is inspiring to once again join outstanding business leaders at our annual awards. It is with great pride that I can report to our members that The Chamber is in great shape. We finished the 2014 year with a healthy profit and as we are well into 2015, I am very encouraged by what I am seeing in the overall economy. Regionally, we started the year very strongly in all areas. Tourism in particular is forecasted to be perhaps one of the best years we have ever had. We have already seen sold out hotel room nights in February and the bookings already in place are a clear indicator of a strong finish. We are expecting a record number of cruise passengers in 2015 and ridership numbers on all modes of transportation are up. In addition our Technology sector is firing on all cylinders and we are seeing signs of improvements in residential home construction. I feel very confident as I look forward and seek to ensure the entire region benefits from the economic opportunities that present themselves. And I congratulate you, our business leaders on being a part of that success.

– Frank Bourree, Chair

CEO Message

I

have facilitated the awards judging for many years and I can assure you the competition for these awards continues to be substantial. The awards process requires a company to take an outsider’s view of their business, stand back and objectively describe their success. The process of taking that outsider’s view can in itself help businesses take a critical look at their company and all that they have achieved. Many of the award applicants actually took the time to let us know what a positive effect this had on both their team and business. I also heard from many businesses who, by their nature are keen competitors, and hoped to get insight on how to become a finalist. The first bit of feedback is that the region is fortunate to have many very strong businesses and the competition for the awards is stiff. Indeed the businesses judged in the awards this year have thrived in the face of difficult economic circumstances. It is important that we recognize and promote the achievements of a strong business community. It is that community which provides the economic circulation for our region. Businesses are the heartbeat for the region, providing fulfilling jobs, great products or services and paying taxes to sustain our way of life. The steady rhythm of a healthy business community keeps an entire community moving and growing. We should be proud of the positive impact business facilitates and the business people who make that happen.

– Bruce Carter, CEO

Board of Governors’ Message

t is my privilege to be honouring Naz Rayani here this evening.

Naz is a strong role model both in business and life. He is well-known for his efforts to fight global poverty, and his deeply personal mission to encourage an open dialogue about the Islamic faith. He has a deep devotion to family, an optimistic heart and a keen mind that doesn’t see obstacles but instead sees opportunity with a little hard work and patience. A passionate humanitarian, Naz has demonstrated his ongoing

commitment to the community in so many ways. While fundraising for the disadvantaged, Naz Rayani also built a solid business and has gone from working behind the counter as a pharmacist to owner of five drug stores in Greater Victoria. For those who have had the privilege of meeting Naz, it comes as no surprise that his businesses are called Heart Pharmacy IDA. Our community is fortunate to have experienced leaders who have boundless energy and such a deep

commitment to our community. Our entire cadre of lifetime achievement award winners share those attributes. Indeed that energy, that devotion to making the community a better place to live and ultimately that success, are what makes Greater Victoria and Canada as a whole the best place on earth. Our sincere thanks to Naz – JazakAllahu khair

Using leadingedge technology developed here in Victoria, the plans are embedded into realty websites and homebuyers can ‘walk’ through a home, moving and replacing furnishings and decorating the space to their own taste. They can change upholstery and finishing options, and place products from online catalogues. Homebuyers are encouraged to visit local retailers and purchase the products featured on the site. Picture This has succeeded in drastically reducing the cost of 3D product modelling, providing local companies with affordable access to digital marketing. Dr. Nazmudin (Naz) G. Rayani

Owner, Heart Pharmacy Group

N

az Rayani has gone from working behind the counter as a pharmacist to owner of five drug stores in Greater Victoria. But the unofficial mayor of Cadboro Bay is perhaps best known for his efforts to fight global poverty, and his deeply personal mission to encourage an open dialogue about the Islamic faith. Naz is quick to offer a warm invitation to learn more about both his faith and his life mission to anyone who expresses curiosity about his cause. For more than two decades, Naz has led the efforts for the World Partnership Walk in Victoria. The event raises funds to help developing nations on behalf of the Aga Khan Foundation. This year, it’s being held at the University of Victoria on May 31. The son of a businessman, Naz was born in Kenya in 1943. He learned early the importance of a strong work ethic. By the time he was 10, he knew he wanted to be a pharmacist as it would allow him to combine his understanding of business with his desire to help others. He chose the first school that accepted him, leaving Africa to study pharmacy at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, Scotland. “Kenya was a British colony so I was used to the British way of life,” Naz recalls of his time in Scotland’s third city. The memories still bring a smile, especially when he recalls attempted conversations with locals whose regional accents were so broad they may as well have been speaking a foreign language. After graduation, Naz returned to Africa where he opened his first pharmacy in 1972 in Nairobi. The store also sold cosmetics and film. “That paid my rent,” says Naz, about the tourists and their cameras who frequented the store at the time. However, Kenya’s political environment prompted Naz to seek out somewhere a little more stable so, in 1974, he immigrated to Canada. He settled on Vancouver Island and purchased the Western Drug Mart at Colwood Corners. The store would eventually become B.C.’s very first Pharmasave, after Western Drug Mart and United Pharmacies merged in 1981. During those early days on the West Shore, Naz earned a reputation for his involvement in the community and was wellregarded for sponsoring local athletes. The store took an active role in promoting healthy living. “When I was 40, I was really on top of the world,” he says. “I felt I had found my niche. Business was good.” In 1986, Naz sold his store to Shoppers Drug Mart and went to

A devout Ismaili Muslim, Naz has worked tirelessly to build positive relationships between all faiths. In Cadboro Bay, he has been involved with St. George’s Anglican Church and the United Church for many years. “I believe in all the faiths but Islam is the most misunderstood,” says Naz, who continues to work tirelessly to help the public overcome unfortunate misconceptions. Since 2001, almost 3,000 people from Greater Victoria have travelled with Naz to tour the Ismaili Centre in Burnaby.

“Every trip is different,” he said about visits to Burnaby, home to one of six Ismaili centres built around the world to enhance mutual understanding and promote friendship and social harmony. Naz helped bring the walk to Victoria 22 years ago and played a key role in helping raise a record $250,000 in 2009. Naz, himself, raised more than $60,000 in 2011. Today, tens of thousands of people take part in walks held across the country. More than $90 million has been raised for international development initiatives and the walk is officially supported by the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development. Asked if he feels satisfied with his accomplishments, Naz says true success in life is defined by something closer to home. “My wife is my pillar,” he says, explaining that success for him is being able to share his life with a wonderful partner and to be blessed with a loving family. He’s proud of both his children, Rasool and Zahra, and his five granddaughters — Aniqa, Sofia, Noor, Naeema, Khaila and Kamilah — who all live nearby. Naz’s work in the community has resulted in numerous honours. In 2006, he was appointed to the Order of Canada at a ceremony in Ottawa. And in 2013 he received an honourary doctorate from the University of Victoria Faculty of Humanities in recognition of his efforts to build connections between faiths and his work to raise money for an endowment supporting Islamic literature in the university’s library. When he was nominated for the 2015 Greater Victoria Chamber Lifetime Achievement Award, Naz’s friend Al Hasham summed up many of the qualities that make Naz a true philanthropist and inspiration to others. “Naz is an extremely positive, humble, kind, generous and fair person,” writes Hasham. “He has been a mentor to me and many others. Naz has a gift of positive energy … He is known for his ‘nothing is impossible’ attitude (and will) give you his support anytime and never say no.”
