INTRODUCTION TO MILL CREEK CURRENT SITE CONDITION

THE SITE’S LOCATION IN ADJACENT TO THE HISTORIC MILL CREEK THAT HAS BEEN COVERED DUE TO EXCESSIVE POLLUTION IN THE CREEK

THE MILL CREEK ARTS AND INNOVATION CENTER WOULD BE LOCATED ON THE SITE THAT WAS PREVIOUSLY THE SHANAHAN CATHOLIC CLUB. THERE THEY HELD JAZZ CONCERTS, ROLLERSKATING RINKS, ETC. MILL CREEK IS A COMMUNITY LOCATED IN PHILADELPHIA PENNSYLVANIA THAT IS FILLED WITH ARTISTIC PEOPLE WHO BELIEVE IN THEIR COMMUNITY. THIS IS WHY IT IS APART OF THE WEST PHILADELPHIA PROMISE ZONE. THE COMMUNITY HAS BEEN THROUGH HARDSHIP SO THEY WANT TO SEE THEIR COMMUNITY GROW AND PROSPER. THE COMMUNITY CONTAINS MULTIPLE SCHOOLS AND RELIGIOUS INSTITUTIONS. THIS SITE HAS BEEN A MAJOR PEDESTRIAN CORRIDOR SINCE IT’S IN THE CENTER OF THE COMMUNITY, WHICH WOULD MAKE IT A GREAT SPOT TO HOLD A COMMUNITY HUB.

DESIGN PROCESS DESIGN PROCESS

WHEN DESIGNING THE ARTS AND INNOVATION CENTER OF MILL CREEK, WE WERE GIVEN THE REQUIREMENTS TO CREATE A SPACE SUITABLE FOR THE COMMUNITY. THE SPACE SHOULD PROVIDE MANY OPPORTUNITIES TO THE CHILDREN, ARTISTS AND MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY. WE WANTED TO PROVIDE AREAS OF RELAXATION, EDUCATION, INSPIRATION AND PERFORMANCE. WHEN STARTING THE DESIGN PROCESS WE STARTED WITH MAKING SURE THAT THE NATURAL PATTERN OF CIRCULATION BETWEEN THE BUILDINGS WAS NOT INTERRUPTED, THROUGH A SERIES OF PATHS. ONE CHALLENGE WE CAME UP WITH THROUGHOUT THE PROCESS WAS THE EXTREME GRADE CHANGE ON THE SITE. WE ALSO EXPERIMENTED WITH THE CONCEPT OF A RIBBON, PHYSICAL AND THEORETICAL, BELOW ARE SOME ITTERATIONS OF THE PHYSICAL ASPECTS OF THE DESIGN THAT WE WOULD WANT TO INSPIRE ARTISTS AND THE COMMUNITY. WE CONFIGURED OUR DESIGN THROUGH MULTIPLE ITTERATIONS WHICH WE COMPILED TO CREATE OUR FINAL DESIGN.

THEORETICAL AND PHYSICAL RIBBON DIAGRAM

THE MEMORIES OF OUR CHILDHOOD LIVE ON WITHIN US AND THE MEMORY OF THE SHANAHAN CATHOLIC CLUB IS STILL ALIVE IN THE HEARTS OF MILL CREEK. OUR DESIGN WORKS TO REVITALIZE, RESPECT AND REINTERPRET THE MEMORIES THAT ONCE LIVED ON OUR SITE. USING A “CULTURAL RIBBON” THAT HELPS TO DEFINE SPACE AND CREATE ARTISTIC OPPORTUNITIES THAT INSPIRE ALL WHO VISIT THE NEW MILL CREEK ARTS AND INNOVATION CENTER. WE WANT TO TIE THE COMMUNITY BACK TO THE SITE BY EVOKING EMOTIONS AND MEMORIES OF THE SITE WHILE ALSO CREATING NEW MEMORIES AND OPPORTUNITIES THAT WILL LIVE ON IN THE COMMUNITY. THE RIBBON WILL NOT ONLY BE A SYMBOLIC RIBBON BUT WILL ALSO BE A PHYSICAL MANIFESTATION OF MATERIALS FOUND IN THE EXISTING BUILDING.

SITE PLAN

IN ORDER TO MAKE THE SITE EASILY ACCESSIBLE IN ALL DIRECTIONS, WE NEEDED TO REGRADE THE SITE SO THAT THERE WOULD BE A GENTLE SLOPE TO THE WEST. AS STORMWATER MANAGEMENT, WE WANTED TO WORK WITH THE RE-GRADING OF THE SLOPE SO WE CREATED MULTIPLE WETLANDS ON THE SITE TO ALLOW WATER COLLECTION AND EDUCATION ON THE SITE.
