I HAVE COMPILED IN THIS PORTFOLIO SAMPLES OF MY WORK IN THREE PROJECTS I HAVE COMPLETED DURING MY FIRST TWO YEARS AT PHILADELPHIA UNIVERSITY. THE FIRST TWO PROJECTS ARE COMPLIED ENTIRELY OF HAND-DRAWN PIECES WITH COLORED PENCILS, MARKERS AND PASTELS. THE THIRD PROJECT IS ALMOST ENTIRELY CREATED WITH COMPUTER DRAWN GRAPHICS CREATED IN PHOTOSHOP, ILLUSTRATOR AND INDESIGN. THROUGHOUT THESE PROJECTS I HAVE LEARNED A MULTITUDE OF SKILLS THAT ALLOWED ME TO GROW AS A DESIGNER, INCLUDING CONCEPTUAL DESIGN, AND PLANTING DESIGN ALONG WITH TECHNICAL SKILLS.

MALINALCO GUEST HOUSE AND GARDEN: PRECEDENT CASE STUDY
AS A COLLABORATIVE PROJECT BETWEEN ARCHITECTURE AND LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE MAJORS, MY PARTNER CHRISTINE DITARANTI AND I COMPLETED A FULL INVESTIGATION ON THE BUILDING AND SITE OF THE MALINALCO GUEST HOUSE AND GARDEN, DESIGNED BY ARCHITECT AND LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT MARIO SCHJETNAN. THE SITE IS A PRIVATE RESIDENCE LOCATED IN MALINALCO MEXICO. SCHJETNAN’S MAIN CONCERN WAS CREATING A DESIGN WHERE THE ARCHITECTURE AND LANDSCAPE WORKED TOGETHER. WATER RESORATION WAS ALSO IMPORTANT IN THE DESIGN DUE THE CURRENT POOR QUALITY OF NEW MEXICO’S WATER.

PHILADELPHIA UNIVERSITY CAMPUS PATH DESIGN
THE GOAL OF THE PROJECT WAS TO CREATE A PATH DESIGN ON THE SITE BEHIND THE DESIGN CENTER AT PHILADELPHIA UNIVERSITY. IT COULD BE USED BY STUDENTS AS WELL AS COMMUNITY MEMBERS. I CREATED A HANDSON EDUCATIONAL PATH AND SPACE THAT STUDENTS AND TEACHERS COULD USE TO MAKE LEARNING INTERACTIVE. THE SITE WAS PREVIOUSLY A HISTORIC LEVY HOUSE THAT HAD BEEN KNOCKED DOWN, WHILE LEAVING REMNANTS. I CREATED A SPACE WHERE STUDENTS COULD LEARN SPATIAL MEASUREMENTS BY THE OUTLINING OF THE HOUSE. I DECIDED TO INCLUDE A ZIPLINE AS A FUN WAY TO LEARN ABOUT TOPOGRAPHY CHANGE AND PHYSICS. THE MAIN PATH CIRCLES THE MAIN PORTION OF THE SITE IN A CURVING MANOR BECAUSE I WANTED THE PATH TO GO AROUND THE TREES OF THE SITE. A CURVING PATH ALSO ALLOWS FOR RELAXATION BECAUSE YOU CANNOT SEE THE FINAL DESTINATION. BY LEARNING IN THE CALMNESS OF NATURE IT GIVES STUDENTS THE RIGHT FRAME OF MIND TO ABSORB INFORMATION AS WELL AS RELAX.

MILL CREEK ARTS AND INNOVATION CENTER
CURRENT SITE CONDITION
THE SITE’S LOCATION IN ADJACENT TO THE HISTORIC MILL CREEK THAT HAS BEEN COVERED DUE TO EXCESSIVE POLLUTION IN THE CREEK. AS A COLLABORATIVE PROJECT WITH MASTERS IN SUSTAINABILITY STUDENTS WHO DESIGNED THE BUILDING, MY PARTNER ZACH ROBERTSON AND I DESIGNED THE LANDSCAPE OF THE NEW MILL CREEK ARTS AND INNOVATION CENTER. IT WOULD BE LOCATED ON THE SITE THAT WAS PREVIOUSLY THE SHANAHAN CATHOLIC CLUB, WHERE THEY HELD JAZZ CONCERTS, ROLLERSKATING RINKS, ETC. MILL CREEK IS A COMMUNITY LOCATED IN PHILADELPHIA PENNSYLVANIA. THE MILL CREEK COMMUNITY IS APART OF THE WEST PHILADELPHIA PROMISE ZONE, WHICH SHOWS HOW THE MEMBERS BELIEVE IN THEIR COMMUNITY. THE SITE HAS BEEN A PROMINANT PEDESTRAIN CORRIDOR ESPECIALLY FOR STUDENTS WALKING TO SCHOOL. OUR DESIGN WORKS TO REVITALIZE, RESPECT AND REINTERPRET THE MEMORIES THAT ONCED LIVED ON OUR SITE. USING A “CULTURAL RIBBON” THAT HELPS TO DEFINE SPACE AND CREATE ARTISTIC OPPORTUNITIES AND INSPIRATION. THE RIBBON WILL NOT ONLY BE A SYMBOLIC RIBBON BUT ALSO A PHYSICAL MANIFESTATION OF THE MATERIALS FOUND ON SITE. WE ACCOMPLISHED THIS THROUGH THE ADDITION OF ARTISTIC PIECES ON THE SITE TO INSPIRE THE MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY.

20% NATIVE THERE ARE MORE INVASIVE VEGETATION THAN NATIVE ON SITE. NATIVE SPECIES OF VEGETATION SUPPORT MORE SPECIES OF WILDLIFE THAN INVASIVE VEGETATION. NATIVE VEGETATION WOULD ALLOW AN INCREASE IN BIODIVERSITY.
