SANTA MONICA AIRPORT / YEAR 2037 TEMPORARY PAVILION 1362 SQUARE METERS
Let’s start by addressing the elephant in the room. This project creates an ecology of effects through minimal means. Two platonic solids, the sphere and the cube, are combined to create different module types. Modules exist at four different scales – from the large and abstract 20 meter module to the smaller and more referential 2.5 meter module. In contrast to its extruded surroundings, the pavilion’s surface area consists of 3560 square meters of curvilinear surfaces, to 2272 square meters of planar surfaces. While in elevation and plan, the rectilinear grid on which the modules are arranged is legible, in perspective the form appears more irregular and ambiguous. This isn’t a white elephant project. The pavilion is completely inflatable and can be erected temporarily for events, then removed from the site when not in use. Air is continuously pumped through the pressurized panels which form the pavilion’s walls. Space yarn, embedded within the panels, creates rigidity, allowing for a combination of planar and curvilinear surfaces. This is an honest modernist project – what you see is what you get. The exterior of the pavilion directly reflects the obverse condition of the interior. Its pink color creates both chromatic ambiguity and a strong visual impact. Pink requires all three RGB cones to work simultaneously, asking maximum participation of the viewer. Its reflectivity and iridescent qualities reinforce the visual obscurity of the form. The pavilion’s vividity reinforces its temporal nature – a true pink elephant.

LOCATION: PROGRAM: SIZE:
PACIFIC PALISADES PRIVATE RESIDENCE FOR ART COLLECTOR 3000 SQUARE FEET
Steel Cloud challenges the conventional shape of a house while taking advantage of steel as a material to achieve long spanning cantilevers. The plan is composed of six circles which are symmetrical on two axis. One enters through the garage into a central gallery of Robert Irwin columns. Each circle contains program - kitchen, office, patio, bedroom, living, and garage. All exterior walls are transparent, and the most private spaces are contained in floating solid cells with transparent glass ceilings. In section, the house is symmetrical on one axis, and its butterfly profile creates an extreme cantilever on the site. The building is supported by a large truss, while the roof is supported by an umbrella structure of six branching columns. The columns extend from the truss which gives them fixity. They are cut and welded to a 1 steel plate to allow for the perpendicular cantilevering beams to intersect the truss. There are different levels of transparency in exposing the steel structure. While the truss is disguised by perforated metal panels, the columns and roof grid are completely exposed on the exterior. One standing inside may wonder how they are being supported, but have a complete understanding of how the roof is supported overhead.

MAJOR BUILDING DESIGN STUDIO MOHAMED SHARIF SPRING 2016
LOCATION: PROGRAM: SIZE:
LOS ANGELES FIRE STATION 27 10,000 SQUARE FEET
Fire Station 27 is composed of a series of profiles arrayed radially in plan which produce a massy exterior and framey interior. The inflated, semi-permeable building collects and disperses movement at two focus points. The building footprint was derived from notations on the ground plane that focus and distribute vehicular lines of flight while tethering them to necessary service and programmatic components. The grouping of circles which connect through overlap and tangent creates two focus points which defines the vehicular circulation through the site in two opposite directions. Radially organized sectional profiles produce hills and valleys which define its bulbous form. Staggered floor heights allow for a simultaneous reading of public and private while creating a divide between the ground plane and the world above. Circulation is critical within the building, as it connects its nodes vertically and horizontally. In addition to supporting the building, structure serves multiple purposes. It elevates mass, spryly tethering the bulk of the building to the ground of the city. Structure defines space, acting as the heavy frame which the flexible skin stretches over to create form. And structure contains circulation. The majority of the building’s vertical circulation exists in ramps and spiral stairs which gradually ascend through the figure-8 shaped steel profiles. The merger of circulation and structure facilitates open and direct territories at the ground level and subdues vertical supports to prioritize the sence of a hefty, inhabited roof.

LOS ANGELES FLAGSHIP SOCCER STORE 35,000 SQUARE FEET
Niky’s Sports Flagship Store is a 35,000 square foot building on the corner of 7th and Union in Westlake, near Downtown Los Angeles, just north of the predominantly Central American quarter of Pico/Union. It enjoys a generous panorama extending from the western downtown skyline to the western reaches of the Hollywood Hills. The site comprises of three lots. Once erected, in time for the FIFA World Cup 2018, the business will demolish the original 3500 square foot store to accommodate a pocket park and vehicular parking. Niky’s Sports is a lively, metropolitan condenser uniting many activities and uses with the singular passion of Futbol. It comprises a flagship store; health-focused restaurant; pocket park; open air gymnasium; offices; short stay/weekend apartments and a rooftop FIFA regulation sized 5-a-side field. Its extruded physique is chiseled, shuffled, staggered and stepped. Variegated shifts of the stadium-like sections amplify the potential of architectonic performances to catalyze urban theatricality. The glazed and metal-paneled wrapper, moving from planar thinness to rusticated fullness, creates a sharp profile and silhouette against the sity skyline. The open structure along the rooftop field enframes the city in the rond.
