color inspiration

spring/summer 2017

It is easy to create a color story, but the difficult part is seeing how the colors can be worn together on the human body. The clothing you wear reflects who you are as a person, so finding those colors that speak to you can be difficult at times. For the spring/summer 2017 season, we have found the top four color palettes, and in this issue we will show how the colors can be brought together with clothing and accessories. Folklore looks to the past art of various cultures to create beautiful and intricately patterned silhouettes. These pieces often tell a story or evoke a memory of the past. Next is idiosyncratic, offering bright colors that are brought together in eyecatching prints and oversized pieces. Awakening offers soft colors and minimal design, playing off the monochromatic trend. Lastly, barren takes the modern silhouette to new heights by adding some warmth to the usually cool palette. Take this issue as a stepping stone to these trends and colors, but make it your own by finding the colors and silhouettes that speak to you.

Enjoy, Victoria Strong Editor-in-Chief

folklore

Rich colors and intricate patterns make up the Folklore trend. This girl wears her hair braided and often looks to pieces with a story behind it. Color, embroidery and prints are combined, and a handful of rings and a wrist filled with various bracelets top off the look. Handcrafted elements create individuality, offering the wearer a way to express themselves. On the runway, designers have traveled across the globe to learn more about Folklore. Florals and detailed prints are seen across the board, whether printed or embroidered. Longer lengths in dresses and skirts are seen, mixing prints and colors in various ways to tell the stories of the cultures that inspired them.

idiosyncratic

Bright colors and oversized pieces set the tone of this trend. Idiosyncratic was brought on by the digital art age seen today. Quirky color combinations are used in crazy prints. Graffiti, scribbles and geometric shapes create fashion only the bold can wear. This trend is for someone who wants to stand out in a crowd. Shapes are morphed and cut apart, stretched and shrunken down. Color is layered upon color in an effortless way. The runway brings scribbles and shapes together with these radiant colors, making patterns that have not been seen before. Just when you thought they couldn’t take it further, silhouettes were enlarged and distorted while shoes grew chunky, tipping the balance until it cannot be tipped anymore.

awakening

Soft colors are complemented by feminine styles. Simple and quiet are interchangeable here. The oversized theme is toned down, streamlining the size to make it wearable with these colors. Monochromatic palettes are often seen with this trend, accented by delicate accessories and simple shoes. Lightweight fabrics such as linen and cotton play up the purity of this palette. On the runway, the delicate colors were enhanced by clean design. Linear elements were kept in mind, keeping pants tailored and dresses slim. Simple prints can be seen in this trend, but nothing flashy or large. Delicate line work and details make sure this trend is kept fresh.

barren

Imagine the rich tones seen on Route 66 combined with playful leaf prints and clean design, and you have Barren. This trend uses the colors found in canyons and the flat lands across the Midwest and pairs them with comfortable styles. Effortlessness is something seen throughout - simple cropped pants, slide-on sandals and crisp tops. Collars and statement lapels are a major detail here. The runway combines the warm earth tones with texture to create tactile pieces that make you want to look closer. It is no surprise that texture would play a role in this trend, since nature offers such a variety. This warm story offers a new twist to the classic neutral palette, allowing designers to experiment with different textiles.
