INFILLING THE VOIDS Rogers Park, Chicago
Goal: To develop a long-term strategy for the integration of Syrian refugees into the city of Chicago, IL. Approach: “Infilling the Voids is a community inclusive project where Syrian refugees are assimilated in the community of Rogers Park, Chicago through a market based economic model. The project aims to rejuvenate the cultural landscape of Clark Street by creating an attractive investment point for the new immigrants. The outcome is to create a cultural hub for tourists, students and visitors while elevating the economy and infrastructure of the Syrian community in Rogers Park.
CLARK ST
The program will consist of a two-phase development. Phase 1 (0-5 years) begins with identifying voids in the street fabric and developing a semi-permanent structure that can run throughout the week at selective time slots. In Phase 2 (5+ years) the voids will be converted to permanent structures. As Syrian market vendors create a more steady income and have more experience as sellers, they will be able to construct more permanent markets.

BIBLIOTECA BARCELONA Barcelona, Spain
Goal: To design a multi-story library that caters to all demograhic persons in the neighborhood and visitors alike Approach: Located at the heart of Barcelona’s city center, the Barcelona Library serves as a central axis for the intellectual and commoner alike. Each story within the six story building serves as a space that fosters innovation and educational growth. Rows of shelving divide common areas from private study spaces, creating both open and enclosed spaces. The wide steps on the ground floor entrance doubles as an outdoor communal space.
The library is a cantilevered building with a concrete back core and steel support system. The cantilever allows for a “floating ground floor, which allows for greater circulation on the street corners.

RESTAURANTE LA VISTA Barcelona, Spain Goal: To design a restaurant or dining hall, using exposed brick as a main building element. The building must be limited to 700 square meters and have careful consideration to the proximity of an adjacent existing library. Approach: Located in the heart of Barcelona, Restaurante La Vista provides an open and inviting dining space for residents and visitors alike. Built on a sloped site, the use of triangular clerestory windows throughout the horizontal length of the restaurant help bring in natural light to the spaces within. The restaurant is built in harmony with the nature of the tree canopies that surround it. La Vista, or “the view, refers to the sights of nature that are captured from the interior dining spaces looking out through the glass windows, as well as from the exterior courtyard. In collaboration with Christian Reeser

KICKAPOO CABINS Kickapoo, Illinois
Goal: Design a cabin complex on the Kickapoo State Recreation Center campgrounds with a larger multi-use building for communal purposes. Approach: My approach to this project was to design a series of cabins along a winding path that follows the steep curvature of the forest topography. Instead of destroying the natural surrounding elements, I designed my cabins to rest on a pier and beam foundation so as to preserve the existing conditions of the site. A larger community house by the lake offers views to the adjacent waters and forests opposite to it.

The cabins offer a small and intimate, but luxious space for visitors to rest while on their journey. In addition to the large facade window, clerestory windows help bring in more natural sunlight.
This passive heating/cooling technique helps the cabins store solar heat gains during colder seasons and allows access heat to escape during the warmer seasons.

MIXED USED COMPLEX Champaign, Illinois
Goal: To design a multi-story mixed use building in downtown Champaign, Illinois. Approach: Within the confines of the rectangular site, my design revolved heavily on creating a clear circulation path within the floor plan. Because the building is a collaborative space for office use and for residential dwelling, there had to be a clear solution to tie the two spaces together while also keeping them separate. The first two levels are designed as an open concept office space and floors three to six are apartment and penthouse style housing. Every floor is ADA accessible except for the rooftop balcony, which is accessed through the two private penthouse suites on the sixth level.
Site Plan
Site Plan Axonometric
I wanted to create a building that allows permeability of sunlight during the daytime while also providing privacy to the office and residential spaces.
This is achieved through the floor to ceiling curtain wall system on floors 1-2 and the large opulent windows on the residential floors.

HAND SKETCHES Europe
During my year abroad, I had the opportunity to travel to over 14 cities in Europe. These sketches are a showcase of some of the amazing historical buildings that I got to visit. Some buildings, like the majestic Opera de Monte Carlo were constructed in the late 19th century while others such as the Pantheon in the Rome have construction dating back to the early 2nd century. All sketches were drawn on site with pen.
