STRENGTH IN NUMBERS
Together, we have the power to drive. We’re proud to bring you the Hercules Tires The Big West Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships. Ride On Our Strength.
THE BIG WEST
Letter from Big West Commissioner Dan Butterly
Dear Big West Basketball Fans,
Welcome to Henderson, Nevada and the 2023 Hercules Tires Big West Basketball Championships presented by The Hawaiian Islands!
This marks our third straight year for Big West Basketball in the Las Vegas Valley and our second at the beautiful Dollar Loan Center. We were thrilled to christen this great facility a year ago and look forward to writing the next chapter in the storied history of Big West basketball this week.
Our goal over the next five days is to successfully crown two champions to represent The Big West in the NCAA Basketball Championships, and to elevate the championship experience for our fans and our teams. Since I became Big West commissioner, we have placed a significant emphasis on enhancing the student-athlete experience both on and off the court. Our commitment to the success of our student-athletes on the court, in the classroom and in the community is stronger than ever before and our desire to improve these outcomes is at the heart of everything we do.
The expansion of opportunity in The Big West is also another focal point. In 2023 we will add a women’s volleyball championship and men’s water polo will become the 19th championship sport in The Big West. For the first time in the 2024-25 academic year, we will provide a conference championship opportunity for every Big West student-athlete when baseball and softball championships begin in 2025.
We are thankful and proud to call this facility and this community home. We are equally grateful to our fans who have made the trip as well as our corporate sponsors and partners from the Vegas Golden Knights and Henderson Silver Knights organizations and the City of Henderson. The tremendous effort they have all put forth in cooperation with our staff and volunteers to make these two championships an unforgettable experience is both recognized and greatly appreciated.
This week, I wish our student-athletes great success as they give their all for an opportunity to participate in the 2023 NCAA Basketball Championships. I also want to thank each and every game official for choosing to work The Big West Basketball Championships.
Last, but certainly not least, thank you for your support and attendance here in Henderson as well as in your local market. We hope you will enjoy a first-class event and make your trip to The Dollar Loan Center an annual tradition.
Enjoy the games!
Dan Butterly Commissioner, The Big WestWelcome to Henderson and the 2023 Hercules Tires Big West Basketball Championships!
As this season reaches its dramatic conclusion this week, we celebrate the countless hours and ceaseless effort of all this year’s competitors. From court to classroom, through every game and every practice, these athletes have dedicated themselves to success in many forms. They exemplify the drive to thrive, and we are honored to be with them on the road to victory.
Over the past 70 years and with everything we do, Hercules Tires builds on a foundation first established in 1952: Confident performance, continuous growth, and courageous leadership. That same spirit is carried by the young men and women competing within the Big West Basketball Championships. Like Hercules, their strength is in unity, teamwork, and the shared outcome of triumph. We rally under the mantra of Ride on Our Strength––But with the accomplishments of these athletes, we are inspired by theirs.
We recognize that such strength wouldn’t be possible without support from the passionate students, alumni, faculty, staff and fans of the Big West Conference Championships. Together, you are the engine that drives us.
Good luck to you all,
Nakia Medlingohawaii.com/malama

WELCOME TO THE MADNESS OF MARCH.
Following a wild regular season finish that saw four teams in contention for the Big West crown on the season’s final day, we turn to the 2023 Hercules Tires Big West Men’s Basketball Championship, presented by the Hawaiian Islands and the battle for The Big West’s automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament.
UC Irvine (22-10; 15-5 Big West) enters postseason play as the No. 1 seed, though UCI and UC Santa Barbara shared the regular season championship. The Anteaters and Gauchos split their regular season meetings, but UC Irvine swept No. 3 seed UC Riverside, while UCSB fell twice to the Highlanders, thus giving UCI the tiebreaker.
The Anteaters are paced by the junior guard tandem of DJ Davis and Dawson Baker. Both average 15 points per game and earned All-Big West First Team and Second Team honors respectively this season. UC Irvine last claimed the No. 1 seed in 2019 en route to a conference championship.
UC Irvine will return to action at Noon on Thursday, March 9 in a quarterfinal matchup against the winner of the Tuesday night tilt between eighth-seeded CSU Bakersfield (10-21, 6-14 Big West) and No. 9 seed CSUN (7-24, 4-16 Big West). The Roadrunners and Matadors split their regular-season series, each triumphant at home.
Second-seeded UC Santa Barbara (24-7; 15-5 Big West) heads to Henderson with the reigning Big West Player of the Year, sophomore Ajay Mitchell. The Gauchos also begin the post-season riding a four-game winning streak. Like UC Irvine before them, the last time UCSB earned the No. 1 seed (2021) they also went on to claim the conference championship.
UC Santa Barbara will face the winner of the first round matchup between seventh-seeded Long Beach State (17-15, 11-9 Big West) and No. 10 seed Cal Poly (7-24, 1-18 Big West). Expect the Beach to control the glass with sophomore forward Lassina Traore. An All-Big West First Teamer and Big West Newcomer of the Year, Traore ranks fifth nationally in rebounds with 340 and eighth in double-doubles with 17 in 32 games. LBSU’s Dan Monson’s 26 victories in Big West championship play are also tops among active coaches. The Beach won both regular-season meetings with the Mustangs.
#3 SEED
The third-seeded Highlanders of UC Riverside (21-11; 14-6 Big West) are the most decorated team in the field having secured Big West Coach of the Year (Mike Magpayo), Freshman of the Year (Lachlan Olbrich) and Best Sixth Player (Jamal Hartwell II) honors. Senior guard Zyon Pullin earned First Team All-Big West accolades and made a strong case for Player of the Year, leading his team in scoring (18.1 ppg) and assists (4.3 apg) en route to Highlanders’ first 20-win season since making the leap from Division II to Division I in 2001. Pullin is joined in the back court by All-Big West Second Team performer Flynn Cameron, the team’s most prolific three-point shooter.
UC Riverside faces No. 6 seed UC Davis (18-13, 11-8 Big West) in the final quarterfinal matchup on Thursday, March 9. Aggies junior guard Elijah Pepper led The Big West in scoring this season, averaging 22.5 points per contest which is fifth best nationally. The Highlanders defeated the Aggies twice during the regular season, winning 74-72 in Davis and 72-65 at home.
#4 SEED
Cal State Fullerton (18-12; 12-6 Big West), the defending conference champions, return to Henderson on a six-game winning streak. Junior guard Latrell Wrightsell, Jr. captured a spot on the All-Big West First Team by pacing the No. 4-seeded Titans in scoring (16.3 ppg) and assists (2.4 apg). Senior guard Tory San Antonio also earned Big West Defensive Player of the Year honors.
Dedrique Taylor’s squad is pitted against No. 5 seed Hawai’i (22-10, 13-7 Big West) on March 9. The Titans edged the Rainbow Warriors 79-72 in overtime at home, and 52-51 on O’ahu. Hawai’i junior guard JoVon McClanahan claimed Second Team All-Big West honors alongside Honorable Mention honorees Noel Coleman and Kamaka Hepa.
As the action gets underway on March 7, bear in mind that this may be the most evenly matched field in recent memory. The Big West has also not had a repeat champion since UC Santa Barbara won back-to-back titles in 2010 and 2011. In all, seven different teams have won the past ten championships, with the overall No. 1 seed winning just four times in that span.
WELCOME TO THE MADNESS OF MARCH.
UC Irvine (24-5; 16-2 Big West) earned the overall No. 1 seed on the final day of the regular season and enter the 2023 Hercules Tires Big West Women’s Basketball Championship, presented by The Hawaiian Islands. The Anteaters occupy the top spot in the bracket for the first time in program history.
UC Irvine was plagued by injuries losing starters Hunter Hernandez, Naomi Hunt and Olivia Williams to season-ending injuries, but have continued to find a way to win. Despite being picked 6th in the preseason poll, UCI has an 8-1 record since February with the lone defeat being a 52-50 loss at home to secondseeded Long Beach State. Sixth Player of the Year and Honorable Mention All-Big West performer Nevaeh Parkinson is just one of a core of players that includes fellow Honorable Mention honorees Déja Lee and Nikki Tom who have delivered when needed this year.
UC Irvine will face the winner of the matchup on Tuesday, March 7 between No. 8 seed CSUN (7-23, 614 Big West) and ninth-seeded CSU Bakersfield (6-22, 3-17 Big West). Second Team All-Big West performer Tess Amundsen powers the Matadors offense with 14 points per game. The Matador big will face a pair of Honorable Mention All-Big West honorees in CSUB’s leading scorer and rebounder Hennie van Schaik and teammate Taylor Caldwell who averages 2.8 assists per contest. The Matadors took both regular-season games with the Roadrunners by single digits.
Long Beach State (22-8, 17-3 Big West) claimed the No. 2 seed with its best overall record since the 2016-17 season, earning Jeff Cammon Big West Coach of the Year honors. Senior guard Tori Harris claimed Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year awards along with a First Team All-Big West nod. Harris led the Beach in scoring (13.6 ppg) and rebounding (4.6 rpg), while teammate and All-Big West Second Team honoree Ma’Qhi Berry dished out a league high 4.4 assists per contest. Harris and Berry are joined by AllBig West Honorable Mention honorees Malia Bambrick, Kianna Hamilton-Fisher and Big West Best Defensive Player and Best Hustle Player Kristyna Jeskeova.
Long Beach State takes the floor on Wednesday, March 8 to face the winner of seventh-seeded Cal Poly (10-17, 7-12 Big West) and No. 10 seed UC Riverside (525, 3-17 Big West). Cal Poly’s Oumou Toure and UCR’s Jordan Webster both earned All-Big West Honorable Mention accolades. The Mustangs swept the Highlanders, including Saturday’s 63-50 road decision.
#3 SEED
Defending champion Hawai’i (15-14; 13-7 Big West) earned the No. 3 seed and is led by sophomore guard Lily Wahinekapu. AW All-Big West First Team performer, Wahinekapu paced the Rainbow Wahine in scoring (11.9 points per game) and assists (2.8 apg).
Hawai’i faces the No. 6 seed Cal State Fullerton (14-15, 9-11 Big West) to cap off action on Wednesday, March 8. Cal State Fullerton’s guard tandem of senior Fujika Nimmo and sophomore Una Jovanovic were named to the All-Big West Second Team. Jovanovic leads the Titans in scoring (14.5 ppg) and assists (3.9 apg). The Rainbow Wahine came out on top in both regular-season contests with the Titans.
#4 SEED
Big West leading scorer and All-Big West First Team honoree Evanne Turner and the fourthseeded UC Davis Aggies (16-13; 12-7 Big West) lock up with No. 5 seed UC Santa Barbara (19-11, 12-8 Big West) in quarterfinal action on March 8. Turner and Freshman of the Year Megan Norris will face a stiff test from the Gauchos’ senior inside-outside tandem of Alexis Tucker and Ila Lane. Both leading scorer Tucker (13.6 ppg) and top rebounder Lane (8.3 rpg) were named to the All-Big West First Team. The teams split their series, each winning comfortably away from home.
On the women’s side, anything can happen – and it usually does. Six different teams have claimed The Big West’s automatic bid in the last ten championships. Though the women’s No. 1 seed has won the past three titles, the overall No. 1 has claimed only four total championships since 2010. The Nos. 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6 seeds have all won in that span, so expect the unexpected.

TITLE IX PASSAGE
The federal law known as Title IX is passed in 1972. Patsy Mink (D–HI), the first woman of color and first Asian-American in the House of Representatives was a major author and sponsor of the initiative. Mink, a graduate of University of Hawai’i, wrote the bill in part in response to being rejected by all 12 medical schools she applied to because she was a woman. After her death in 2002, the official name of Title IX was changed to the Patsy T. Mink Equal Opportunity in Education Act.
PCAA TAKES THE LEAD
In 1983, the Pacific Coast Athletic Association (PCAA) becomes the first western conference to introduce women's athletic programs, allowing female studentathletes to compete at the same level as their male counterparts.
UNLV defeated UC Irvine to win the first PCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament in 1984. UNLV was led by Misty Thomas, an Academic All-America guard who represented Canada in the 1984 Olympic Games. Thomas, who would later be inducted into the UNLV Hall of Fame and Canadian Basketball Hall of Fame, squared off against UC Irvine’s Cheri Graham. Graham set UC Irvine single season records for points (593), field goals (240) and blocks (115) in 1984, en route to becoming the Anteaters’ first All-American in women’s basketball. Graham is a member of the UCI Hall of Fame.

1988
LBSU won the first Big West women’s basketball title in 1988. In 12 seasons, Joan Bonvicini posted a 325-71 overall record with ten conference titles and ten consecutive NCAA Tournaments bids, including Final Four appearances in 1987 and 1988.
WOMEN’S SPORTS HISTORY
NAMES AND GAMES
In 1988, the Pacific Coast Athletic Association changed its name to the Big West Conference. The move came on the heels of a contract to appear as the late game on ESPN’s Big Monday triple header telecast along with the Big East and Big Ten.
Long Beach State won the first women’s basketball championship under the Big West moniker. The win was Joan Bonvicini’s 3rd straight conference title. Overall Bonvicini turned in a 325-71 record in 12 seasons at LBSU. During her tenure, the team averaged 24 wins per season on the way to ten conference titles and ten consecutive NCAA Tournaments bids including Final Four appearances in 1987 and 1988.
80’S EXCELLENCE
The PCAA/Big West enjoyed unprecedented success in women’s sports in the 1980’s, winning a total of seven national championships in the decade.
Pacific’s women’s volleyball team became the first PCAA women’s program to claim a national championship with the back-to-back titles in 1985 and ‘86. Hawai’i women’s volleyball followed in 1987 as freshman Tonya “Teee” Williams earned AVCA National Player of the Year honors. Long Beach State’s Tara Cross won Player of the Year the following season, and the duo of Williams and Cross shared the honor in 1989. Cross’ Long Beach State squad also won the national championship in 1989, capping off a run of four national championships in five years for the PCAA/Big West.
Judi Garman, hired by Cal State Fullerton as the first fulltime softball coach in the nation in 1980, led the Titans to the 1986 Women’s College World Series championship. Garman amassed an overall record of 913-376-4 in 20 seasons in addition to nine conference titles. Garman was inducted into the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1993.
San Jose State, then a member of the Big West, also captured women’s golf national titles in 1987 and 1989.
1988
Long Beach State, captained by setter Misty May, finished 36-0 and became the first women’s NCAA volleyball team to have an undefeated season.
INDIVIDUAL HONORS
UNLV’s Sheila Tarr claimed the PCAA’s first individual national title when she won the heptathlon at the 1984 NCAA Championships. Tarr was also the first NCAA champion from the state of Nevada and was named alternate to the 1988 United States Olympic Team. She is a member of the UNLV and Southern Nevada Sports Hall of Fame. Tarr succumbed to Multiple Sclerosis in 1998 at the age of 34. The Sheila Tarr Academy of International Studies, an elementary school that bears her name, is in Las Vegas.
Tarr is one of seven PCAA/Big West individual national champions. A list that also includes San Jose State’s Pat Hurst who won individual medalist honors along with a Honda Award as the nation’s best female collegiate golfer in 1989. Hurst was a first team All-American in 1989 and ’90 and won the 1990 US Women’s Amateur. Hurst won LPGA Rookie of the Year in 1995 and won six LPGA Tour events in her career.
In 1998 Long Beach State finished 36-0 and became the first women’s NCAA volleyball team to have an undefeated season. LBSU was captained by setter Misty May who would share the Most Outstanding Player award after setting a tournament record with 20 service aces. In her career, May won numerous Big West accolades as well as the Honda Sports Award for the nation’s best

female volleyball player, the Honda-Broderick Cup as the best overall female college athlete and back-to-back National Player of the Year awards in 1997 and 1998. In all, Big West women’s volleyball players have won or shared the AVCA National Player of the Year award ten times.
In 2010, UC Riverside’s Brenda Martinez closed out her stellar career with eight individual conference championships, making her the most decorated female student-athlete in Big West history. Martinez would later represent her country in the 1,500 meters at the 2016 Olympics in Rio.
OLYMPIC GLORY
Brenda Martinez is one of 62 Olympians and Paralympians who have also competed in the PCAA/Big West. Over half of that group have participated in multiple Games, including Long Beach State alum Danielle Scott-Arruda’s five appearances on Team USA’s women’s volleyball squad between 1996 and 2012, the most for any Big West performer. Since the first Big West women appeared in the 1964 games, ten of the 11 institutions have been represented in the Olympics in 20 Team USA disciplines.
Three-time gold medalist Misty May-Treanor is the most decorated Big West Olympian. She is part of a group that includes Scott-Arruda as a two-time silver medalist (2008 & 2012, volleyball), Cal Poly gold medalist Stephanie Brown Trafton (2008, discus) and silver medalist, and current University of Hawai’i women’s volleyball coach, Robyn AhMow (2008, volleyball).
CSUN alumnus Katie Holloway is a four-time medalist at the Paralympic Games, earning two silver and two gold medals in women’s sitting volleyball. Holloway, who was born without a fibula in her right leg, played basketball for the Matadors averaging 14.5 points and 7 rebounds per game during her senior year in 2008.
Overall, 24 Big West athletes and coaches competed in the 2020 Tokyo games, while three appeared in the Paralympic games and one coach and one alternate made their way to the 2022 Beijing Olympics and Paralympic games.

PRO PROSPECTS
2022 Big West Women’s Basketball Player of the Year and championship MVP, Hawai’i’s Amy Atwell is the most recent WNBA draft pick to represent The Big West. Atwell was selected in the 3rd round by the Los Angeles Sparks.
Fellow Rainbow Wahine Judy Moseley-McAfee was the conference’s first WNBA draft pick, going 6th overall to the Sacramento Monarchs in 1997. UC Santa Barbara’s Kristen Mann is the other Big West first-rounder, having been selected 11th overall to the Minnesota Lynx in 2005. Overall, The Big West has produced nine WNBA draft picks.
Long Beach State alum Penny Toler also holds the distinction of being the first player to score a basket in the WNBA as a member of the Los Angeles Sparks.
Long Beach State’s Lena Silano is the last of the four Big West players that have been drafted into the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). Silano, and teammate Kaitlin Fregulia who was selected in 2022 are joined by Kiana Palacios (UC Irvine, 2018) and Christina Burkenroad (Cal State Fullerton, 2017) as NWSL draftees.
ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
UC San Diego and CSU Bakersfield became The Big West’s newest members on July 1, 2020. Scholarship student-athletes at UC San Diego graduate at the highest rate among all public institutions in Division I and II. Female student-athletes participating in eight Big West sports at UCSD have a collective graduation rate of 95.5%.
The latest NCAA Graduation Success Rate data placed the overall single-year rate at 90%. In 2022, 22 Big West women’s teams had a 100% graduation rate.
Named after 46-year UC Davis Athletics veteran and national leader in the development of women's athletics, the Marya Welch Initiative for Women's Athletics at UC Davis strives to provide new, recurring and comprehensive support for all 16 of the Aggies’ women's teams.
2022
Hawai’i’s Amy Atwell is the most recent WNBA draft pick to represent The Big West.

BOUNDLESS OPPORTUNITIES
In 1977, UC Irvine’s first year of competition in the PCAA, the Anteaters named Linda Dempsay Athletic Director. She was the country’s first female athletic director at an NCAA Division I institution. Dempsay served until 1983.
UC Santa Barbara’s Kelly Barsky and UC Irvine’s Paula Smith currently lead Big West athletic programs, while Dr. Lynnette Zelezny (CSUB), Dr. Erika Beck (CSUN) and Dr. Jane Conoley (LBSU) comprise three of the 11 female presidents in the California State University system.
Overall, women in Division I have the highest participation rate in all of college sports at 47.1%, up from 26.4% in 1982. Division I also has the most diverse female student-athlete population with minority participation at 39%, an increase of ten percentage points from 2001.
From humble beginnings, The Big West now sponsors ten women’s sports with over 1,700 studentathletes competing.
