DEKONINCK IS AN ULTIMATE COMPETITOR

Gilles Dekoninck loves to compete. He’ll do anything and everything to make himself and his teammates better. He’s the type of player who will do the dirty work for the betterment of the program.

The redshirt junior sat out the 2019-20 campaign after playing in 20 games the previous season.

Dekoninck made his way to the Sun City from Fresno State after following UTEP Head Coach Rodney Terry. It’s been quite the journey for Dekoninck as he came to the United States from Diest, Belgium, while playing his high school ball at Huntington Prep prior to heading out west.

“I made a big decision to come to UTEP obviously because I like coach Terry’s way of coaching and felt comfortable with the coaching staff,” Dekoninck said. “But that first year I had a lot of fun because we had a good

schedule, playing teams like Arizona and Marquette. It was especially fun for me because I had never played that many minutes. The coaches put a lot of trust in me that season.”

Dekoninck opened his UTEP career with a 14-point performance, while tallying 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting and pulling down seven boards at Southern Miss late in the season.

Dekoninck’s first season with the Miners gave him a real taste of college hoops after playing in only seven games his freshman season at Fresno State.

Terry used that first season as the foundation for his coaching philosophy. The Miners were pretty much all new faces and Dekoninck was brought to the program to help push Terry’s system – playing hard with great pace.

“I really love competing and going hard,” Dekoninck said. “I like playing with a lot of energy because that’s what coach [Terry] wants for me.”

Dekoninck, along with Terry and assistant coach Nick Matson, made the decision to sit out the 2019-20 season. It gave Dekoninck the opportunity to grow and immerse himself in practice to master the system.

“I had a really good talk with coach Terry and coach Matson about that decision,” he said.

“They told me to prepare for this season and go really hard so I can to make the most out of the year. They told me to treat practice as games.”

And Dekoninck did just that. He could be seen hustling, grinding, talking and getting in the faces of his teammates to push them harder. @UTEP @UTEPATHLETICS ATHLETICS

DEKONINCK IS AN ULTIMATE COMPETITOR “I had been practicing hard, but around January when we dipped a little, coach told me to crank it up in practice,” Dekoninck said.

“He really wanted me to get the edge on some of the guys to see how they would react. I would talk a little trash and coach Terry told me to get on some nerves to get the competitiveness out of the guys.”

Besides talking to the coaches about practice, Dekoninck and Bryson Williams also had a chat.

“I had a good talk with Bryson Williams about this too,” he said.

“We need to have more competitive practices, not just listening to the coaches and doing the drills. We need the players to get on the other players more about going hard and being tougher.

You need to go stronger to the rim. Sometimes they have to learn the hard way if they don’t want to learn. You might give an elbow here and there in a rebound, so they know that they have to boxout.”

Dekoninck not only gets to hustle in practice, but he’ll have the chance to once again compete on game day. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, along with quarantine over the last five months, Dekoninck made a positive from a negative situation.

“I put on like a good 15 pounds of muscle. I mean, this quarantine got me cooking and eating healthier,” Dekoninck said.

“Coach Terry told be to put on muscle to get better with my three-point shot and become a better defender. His expectation for me for this upcoming season is to be a defender, knock down open shots, and be the energy guy. I take pride in my energy.”

“Those are key things, I think, how they are on the court energy wise, how to communicate and playing with pace. I hope to bring that this season.”

Fun Fact about Gilles: “I really like photography, but I’m also really into fashion. I love clothes.

They don’t have to be expensive, sometimes I’ll go to goodwill and find a super-nice shirt for a couple dollars. But I really like fashion and it goes hand-in-hand with pictures.”

Though Dekoninck sat out as a redshirt, he was just as important as the starting five that contributed to that run.

“I really enjoyed that,” Dekoninck said. “I think it’s literally the most fun part of our practice – the competitiveness.

I’m all for it. It makes the team better.”

TERRY ST. EDWARD’S UNIVERSITY ‘90 THIRD SEASON AT UTEP 10TH SEASON AS A COACH

Rodney Terry, was appointed the 19th head coach in UTEP men’s basketball history on March 12, 2018. He is in his third season as UTEP head coach and 10th overall at the helm of a collegiate program.

Terry has chalked up 151 wins as a head coach, while he’s compiled 73 conference victories.

In Terry’s second season at the helm, UTEP won 17 games, nine more than the previous season, while more than doubling its Conference USA wins. The Miners posted their first winning season in four years, and made a return to the C-USA Tournament. UTEP finished with a 13-4 record in the Haskins Center, its best home mark and most home victories in four years.

On Nov. 12, the Miners beat NM State to end a nine-game losing streak to the Aggies, as the last time the Miners had NM State was on Nov. 22, 2014. The Miner defense held the Aggies to 50 points, their lowest point total in a game versus UTEP since Nov. 29, 1983.

On Nov. 19, UTEP defeated longtime rival New Mexico. It was the first time UTEP had beaten NM State and UNM in the same

season since 2008-09, while it was the first home sweep in the Sun City since 1997.

After beating MEAC runner-up NC A&T and Big West Champion UC Irvine in El Paso on December 16 and 17, the Miners won their first WestStar Bank Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational Championship since 2014.

Other highlights during the season included UTEP’s largest comeback win in program history. The Miners found themselves down 24 points to UTSA, only to rally and win 80-77 in overtime on Jan. 15.

The historic victory also tied for the 24th-biggest comeback in NCAA history. UTEP scratched out another big comeback victory, this time against Rice on Feb. 22. The Miners rallied from 19 points down, flying past the Owls, 68-62.

The Miners made multiple improvements from year one to year two under Terry. UTEP shot 74.9 percent from the foul line, ranking fourth in C-USA and 54th nationally. The year prior, UTEP shot 66.1 percent from the free-throw line. UTEP’s 451 made free throws last season ranked second in C-USA, while its 602 free-throw attempts

ranked fourth. The defense also improved, as the Miners allowed 66.1 points per game from 69.0 the season prior. UTEP also decreased its turnovers, while forcing more turnovers. The Miners ranked fourth in C-USA in blocked shots (103) after ranking 12th the season before.

Terry directed redshirt junior Bryson Williams, who was named to the 2020 All-C-USA first team and the 2020 District 11 NABC first team. Williams was the first Miner in five seasons to earn a first team spot in conference, while he was the first student-athlete since 2010 to earn an NABC honor. Williams finished third in C-USA, averaging 17.8 points per game, ranked fifth in rebounding (7.2 rpg) and 13th in free-throw percentage (81.1). Williams was named the C-USA Player of the Week three times throughout the season. One of the honors came after his 34-point, 10-rebound performance against UTSA on Jan. 15.

Souley Boum also experienced success in his first year as a Miner. The redshirt sophomore led C-USA in free-throw percentage (87.8) and rated 21st nationally. Boum’s single-season performance ranked second in

RODNEY TERRY program history. One of Boum’s more memorable efforts was when he went 14-for-14 from the foul line during UTEP’s victory over Southern Miss, as the Miners finished a combined 34-of37 from the line on Jan. 9.

Daryl Edwards played for Terry as a graduate transfer from LSU. He finished third on the team in scoring while he averaged over 21 points the last eight games of

the season. One of those games included a 34-point outburst against Rice, in which the Miners rallied from 19 points down to claim victory. Edwards was named the C-USA Player of the Week following that performance. Edwards followed that 34-point effort with 26 points, 25 and 22 in the next three games. He was the first Miner in nine seasons to score 22 or more points in four consecutive games.

Overall, the Miners earned four C-USA Player of the Week honors, which were the most since the 2014-15 season.

Terry’s revamped roster for the 2018-19 campaign featured three returnees from the previous season (senior Paul Thomas, and sophomores Evan Gilyard and Kobe Magee), while only seven scholarship players were eligible to play. Four of those scholarship players were true freshmen. Nigel Hawkins, Jordan Lathon, Kaosi Ezeagu and

All-Conference USA Freshman honoree Efe Odigie helped lay down coach Terry’s culture and foundation.

Terry won his first game at the helm of the UTEP program on Nov. 6, 2018 – a 90-63 thrashing of UTPB in the Haskins Center. The 90 points were the most ever by a UTEP team during a head coach’s debut. The 27-point victory tied for second-largest for a UTEP coach in his debut.

Prior to C-USA play, Terry’s squad also produced wins against ENMU (66-59), Northwestern State (77-47), UC Riverside (68-56) and closed out the nonconference slate with a 7665 triumph against Wyoming in the Sun Bowl Tournament.

Odigie produced one of the best seasons by a UTEP freshman, leading C-USA in rebounding per game (10.1). Odigie was one of two C-USA players to average a double-double after collecting

RODNEY TERRY 12.7 points per contest. Odigie’s rebounding average set a new UTEP freshman record, while his 252 total rebounds ranked second among UTEP freshmen all-time. Odigie was the first Miner to average a double-double since the 1981-82 season, while his 11 double-doubles set a program record by a freshman.

Odigie was also the fourth Miner to lead the league in rebounding per game.

Terry directed a pair of freshmen guards in Lathon and Hawkins. Lathon started 27 games and ranked fourth on the squad in points per game (10.9) and total points (294). Lathon led the Miners in assists (74), while ranking second on the team in blocked shots (23). Hawkins led UTEP and ranked sixth in C-USA in free-throw percentage (79.5) and made free throws (97).

Hawkins’s made free throws and free-throw percentage both ranked third-best by a UTEP frosh.

Lathon and Hawkins helped chalk up Terry’s first C-USA win as the pair led the Miners to a 65-64 victory against Rice on Jan. 12. Hawkins set a career high with 24 points, while Lathon provided the finishing touches with his buzzer-beating jump shot on the baseline off a full-court pass from Ountae Campbell.

Between the trio of freshman, Odigie (Nov. 26, Dec. 24), Lathon (Dec. 3, Feb. 25) and Hawkins (Jan. 14) combined for five C-USA Freshman of the Week honors. It was the most since the Miners earned six FOTW honors during the 201314 campaign. Odigie finished

20th in C-USA in scoring average, while Hawkins rated 21st.

Lathon ranked 15th in C-USA, averaging almost three assists per game.

Ezeagu was the fourth member of the talented freshmen class, as he, Hawkins, Lathon and Odigie set a UTEP freshmen record after combining for 63 points at Marshall on Jan. 31. Ezeagu led the team in blocked shots (24) and was the lone UTEP freshman to play in all 29 games.

The Miners ranked fifth in C-USA, forcing 13.5 turnovers per contest. Their defensive rebounding per game (27.0) also ranked fifth in the league.

Terry emphasizes effort in the classroom as seven Miners earned academic accolades.

A year ago, Ountae Campbell, Gilles Dekoninck, Daryl Edwards, Kaosi Ezeagu, Keonte Kennedy, Jordan, Lathon, Aunieus Medrano, Isaiah Rhyanes, Anthony Tarke, Tydus

Verhoeven, Eric Vila, Bryson Williams and Jules Williamson were announced to the C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll (3.0 GPA or better). Campbell was also honored as a C-USA Commissioner’s Academic Medalist (3.75 GPA or better).

Prior to coming to UTEP, Terry guided Fresno State to a record of 126-108 in seven seasons as head coach (2011-18), including 20-win campaigns in four of the last five years and the 2016 Mountain West Conference Tournament title with a trip to the NCAA Tournament.

The Bulldogs compiled a 62-58 mark in Mountain West Conference play, with double-digit victories in each of the last four campaigns.

A native of Angleton, Texas, Terry made his return to the Lone Star State. He played his collegiate ball at St. Edward’s University in Austin, and began his collegiate coaching career as an assistant with the Hilltop@UTEPATHLETICS

Following three coaching stints at high schools in the state of Texas – including as the head coach at Somerville HS and his alma mater Angleton HS – Terry served as an assistant coach at Baylor (1996-98), UNC Wilmington (1998-02) and Texas (2002-11) prior to landing the head coaching position at Fresno State.

In seven seasons at Fresno State, Terry coached players who earned a total of 15 All-Conference accolades, including two-time (2015-16) first team All-Mountain West guard Marvelle Harris. In 2018, guard Deshon Taylor became the second Bulldog to garner first team All-League honors under Terry’s watch. Terry also coached second team All-League Kevin Olekaibe (2012) and Tyler Johnson (2014) and third teamers Taylor (2017) and Bryson Williams (2018). He coached the MWC Freshman of the Year Paul Watson in 2014 and the MWC Player of the Year Harris in 2016. Three

of his players – Harris (2015-16), Jaron Hopkins (2017) and Taylor (2018) – earned spots on the MWC All-Defensive Team.

Under Terry’s direction, Fresno State forged 21 victories during the 2013-14 season, 25 in 2015-16, 20 in 2016-17 and 21 in 2017-18. The Bulldogs went 10-8 in the MWC in 2014-15, 13-5 in 2015-16 (second place), and 11-7 in both 2016-17 and 2017-18.

In 2016 Fresno State knocked off UNLV (95-82), Colorado State (64-56) and San Diego State (6863) at the MWC Tournament in Las Vegas to earn the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament – the Bulldogs’ first trip to the “Big Dance” in 15 years. Harris was tabbed the MWC Tournament Most Outstanding Player. Fresno State’s 25 wins in 2015-16 were the third-most in school history and the Bulldogs closed the season strong, winning 11 of their last 12 games.

His 2014-15 squad notched the school’s first win over a top25 team (San Diego State) in 13 years. The 2013-14 Bulldogs posted the program’s first 20win season and postseason appearance in seven years while making a dramatic turnaround in MWC play. Fresno State rallied from a 1-7 league start to finish 9-9. During the 2012-13 campaign, the Bulldogs secured their first-ever win at UNLV. Known as an outstanding recruiting and bench coach, Terry has coached two national players of the year and has been a part of 12 teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

His nine-year tenure as an assistant coach at Texas produced nine NCAA Tournament appearances including a Final Four berth in 2003, trips to the Elite Eight in 2006 and 2008, and four Sweet 16 showings. The Longhorns fashioned a mark of 232-80 during that span, the winningest nine-year period in school history. They posted 30 victories during both the 200506 (30) and 2007-08 (school-record 31) seasons, and 28 during the 2010-11 campaign. In January of 2010, Texas reached the no. 1 spot in the country for the first time in school history.

Terry also ran point on the recruitment of 2011 UT signee Myck Kabongo, who competed in the 2011 McDonald’s All-American Game.

Texas’ recruiting class was rated number one nationally in 2004, third in 2006 and 2009 and eighth in 2010.

Texas’ National Player of the Year recipients were T.J. Ford in 2003 and Kevin Durant in 2007.

Ford (2003) and Durant (2007) joined D.J. Augustin (2008) as consensus first team All-Americans during Terry’s time as an assistant, and Augustin claimed the Bob Cousy Award as the nation’s top point guard in 2008.

In all, Terry coached 13 players at Texas that were chosen in the NBA Draft, including nine firstround selections and five lottery picks in Ford, Aldridge, Durant,

Augustin and Thompson. Texas was the only school in the country to have a Top-10 pick in the 2006, 2007 and 2008 NBA Draft, and the Longhorns had three players chosen in 2010 and 2012.

Prior to joining Rick Barnes’ staff in Austin, Terry assisted coach Jerry Wainwright at UNC Wilmington for four seasons.

The Seahawks made three postseason tournament appearances during this stretch, reaching the NCAA’s in 2000 and 2002 and the NIT in 2001. During the 2001-02 season, UNC Wilmington set a school record with 23 victories and scored the initial NCAA Tournament win in school history, upsetting USC 98-89 in overtime in the first round. Terry assembled a top-30 recruiting class at UNC Wilmington and, during the 2001-02 season, was named the co-mid/low-major Assistant Coach of the Year by TheInsiderHoops.com, which he shared with Valparaiso’s Scott Drew (now the head coach at Baylor).

Prior to joining the staff at UNCW, Terry served two years as an assistant coach at Baylor (1996-98). He spent one season (1995-96) as the varsity coach at Angleton High School and two years as the head coach at Somerville High School. Terry posted a 15-13 mark at Angleton and a 49-21 record at Somerville, leading the school to the Class 2A state semifinals in 1993-94.

He also worked for two years (1991-93) as an assistant coach at Austin Bowie High School.

Terry earned his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a minor in Physical Education from St. Edward’s University in 1990. During his collegiate career, he was a threeyear starter at point guard and a three-time Academic All-Big State Conference selection. The Hilltoppers won the Big State Conference title during his freshman season (1986-87), and he served as team captain in his junior and senior campaigns.

SCHOOL NAME

The State School of Mines and Metallurgy opened in September 1914 because city leaders shared a vision for higher education. In 1920, it became known as Texas College of Mines (TCM). To better reflect its role as an expanding regional college campus, the school changed its name in 1949 to Texas Western College. In 1967, it became The University of Texas at El Paso.

SCHOOL COLORS

UTEP’s original colors were burnt orange and white, adopted from The University of Texas, and shared with UT San Antonio. In 1980, when President Haskell Monroe came to campus, he found that many individuals desired to give UTEP an identity of its own by changing the school’s colors. Early

on Dr. Monroe was presented with a proposal to change the colors to orange and blue. Unfortunately, UT San Antonio changed their colors to orange and blue just days before UTEP’s proposal was presented. This minor issue was quickly resolved by altering the shades of orange and blue.

The chosen orange was more “brownish” than “burnt” and was thought to resemble the mountains at the pass. The blue was slightly darker than the blue being used by the old NFL team, the Houston Oilers; the color was identified as “El Paso Bright Blue Sky.” Officially, the academic colors of all the institutions in the UT System were orange and white, but for athletic purposes, additional or substitute colors could be used with the Board’s approval. Monroe presented his

argument and the color selection to the Board of Regents and they voted in UTEP’s favor.

MASCOT PAYDIRT PETE

In the spring of 1919, the registrar for the School of Mines, Ruth Monro Augur, designed the institution’s first official seal. The seal featured a head of a spade with a mining burro superimposed on it. This burro, noted the Prospector student newspaper at the time, was to be the school’s first mascot.

The University of Texas at El Paso’s first live mascot was a burro. But Paydirt Pete — UTEP’s pickaxe-wielding mascot with the smooth mustache and square chin — has been an indelible symbol of the University’s athletic prowess and Miner spirit for more than 40 years.

Since 1974 when the moniker “Paydirt Pete” was adopted, fans have watched the mighty mascot undergo six incarnations.

Paydirt Pete started as a Disneylike character in 1980. He developed muscles and a smoking habit in 1983, but ditched the cigar three years later. Pete exchanged his mining helmet for a cowboy hat and a handlebar mustache in 1999, then became a scraggly miner the following year. In 2005, he was finally transformed into the “Magnum, P.I.” look-alike that Miner fans love today.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS - JIM SENTER the men’s basketball, women’s basketball, soccer and volleyball squads all exhibited significant improvement. Off the field, a school-record 174 UTEP student-athletes registered grade point averages of 3.0 or higher at the conclusion of the fall 2019 semester, and 49 -- also a new school standard -- were recipients of C-USA Academic Medals with GPA’s of 3.75 or better.

Jim Senter was named UTEP’s Director of Athletics on Nov. 22, 2017.

To say that Senter has been busy since arriving in the Sun City would be quite the understatement. He has hired head coaches for football (Dana Dimel), men’s basketball (Rodney Terry), rifle (Austin Litherland), soccer (Kathryn Balogun), volleyball (Ben Wallis) and softball (T.J. Hubbard). With a firm belief that “Every Person Makes a Difference,” Senter has engaged Miner supporters far and wide. He organized a series of Town Hall meetings across El Paso, and established UTEP’s first-ever Fan Council. He also unveiled a vision for the future of Sun Bowl Stadium, with sweeping changes scheduled to take place in the iconic venue beginning with the 2020 season.

On the field, highlights from the early Senter era have included the women’s cross country team capturing its first conference championship, women’s track and field winning the Conference USA Indoor title, and women’s golf posting three consecutive tournament victories for the first time in school history.

Senter served as Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, from 201417. During that time he hired head coaches in football, men’s basketball, baseball, soccer and volleyball.

Senter’s fundraising efforts resulted in significant improvements being made to the football, basketball and baseball facilities. He grew scholarship endowment by nearly $6 million in cash and pledges over three years. His total fundraising numbers set school records.

Senter grew football attendance by more than 3,000 spectators per game, and the Bulldogs led the Southern Conference in attendance. They posted a 10win season in 2016 and a ninevictory campaign in 2015.

Academically, 174 Bulldog student-athletes garnered placement on the Southern Conference Honor Roll in 2017.

The year prior, The Citadel produced two CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) Academic AllAmericans.

Senter went to The Citadel after spending seven years

(2006-13) at the University of Colorado, where he worked his way up to Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Operations.

Senter was the sport supervisor for the Colorado football, skiing, men’s and women’s golf programs. He also had supervision over the Chief Marketing Officer and numerous other areas including facilities, sports medicine, sports performance, game and event management and equipment services.

He began his tenure at Colorado as Associate AD for Development. In that role, his responsibilities included all fundraising efforts, including the annual fund (student-athlete scholarships), major gifts and coordinating all donationrelated activities and staff. He was later elevated to Associate Athletic Director.

Before Colorado, Senter served as Associate Athletic Director for Development/Senior Associate AD for External Sales at San Diego State for 18 months. Aligned closely with the University foundation, he was responsible for overseeing the athletic department’s development efforts, including major gifts.

He spent 2003-05 as Director of Athletics at Idaho State University, a 16-sport Division I-AA program. He engineered a 19 percent increase in football attendance and a $600,000 leap in advertising, marketing and corporate sales.

Senter began his college athletic career at the University of Idaho.

He served as Assistant and Associate Athletic Director of Development from 1998-2003 in a chief fundraising capacity.

He was responsible for the university’s Capital Campaign for Athletics, helping raise money for a $13 million athletic facility expansion. He also ran the annual fund for Vandal athletics, overseeing the work of 48 national directors and planning the fiscal budget.

During his coaching days, Senter was in charge of the defensive line, linebackers and secondary.

He was a part of Idaho’s run to a 52-21 record over seven seasons and six NCAA playoff appearances.

Senter began his coaching career at Coffeyville Community College in Kansas, where he was a student assistant in 1981 and 1982. He later held that role at his alma mater, the University of Tulsa, from 1983-85 before moving on to Idaho.

Senter earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Tulsa in 1985, and added a master’s degree in recreation from Idaho in 1992 while serving on the football coaching staff.

He was born in Doylestown, Pa., and graduated from Jay (Okla.) High School where he was a football letter winner. He is married to the former Susan Beck and the couple has four children -- Shawna, Derick, Matthew and Samantha.

Dr. Heather Wilson became the 11th President of The University of Texas at El Paso in 2019 after serving as Secretary of the United States Air Force. She is the former president of the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology, and she represented New Mexico in the United States Congress for ten years. Dr. Wilson is the granddaughter of immigrants and was the first person in her family to go to college. She graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in the third class to admit women and earned her masters and doctoral degrees from Oxford University in England as a Rhodes Scholar.

By Jeff Darby, UTEP Athletics Creating Champions: This is an article in a series about UTEP student-athletes who share their unique stories and how athletic scholarships have made a difference in their lives. Each of these students reflects on the value of their UTEP experiences and the opportunities they create for the future.

Josh Caldwell endured his share of trials and tribulations on his way to starting at cornerback for the UTEP Miners. Growing up in California, he shared a room with two of his brothers and had to commute 40 minutes to high school daily while staying with the father of one of his friends.

“We just had to car pool,” he said.

“Sometimes we would take an Uber. Sometimes we would be late because it was a struggle to get there.”

Despite leading La Mirada High School (Norwalk, Calif.) to a CIF and state championship as a senior, Caldwell received no Division I scholarship offers.

time, and everybody said ‘It’s like a rollercoaster, you’re going to love it,’” he said with a laugh. “I got on the plane, it started to lift off, and my stomach started bubbling up.”

He survived the trip, and now he’s set to begin his third and final season in the Orange and Blue. Last year, he really came into his own, posting a team-leading 11 pass breakups -- the eighth-best seasonal total in school history.

He has aspirations of playing in the NFL, but becoming the first of eight siblings to earn a college degree is equally as important to him.

“Where I came from, not a lot of people have succeeded,” he said.

“My younger siblings look up to me, and that makes me go harder.

“Getting a degree opens up different opportunities in life, and you get to connect with other people.

Caldwell is majoring in Multidisciplinary Studies with a minor in Communications. Besides playing in the NFL, he has a goal of being a firefighter.

He’s eternally grateful to coach Dana Dimel, as well as Miner Athletic Club supporters, for giving him the opportunity to receive a free college education.

“It means a lot,” he said. “If I didn’t have this scholarship, I would have taken another year of junior college. I’m just blessed and thankful.”

He’s excited about the upcoming 2020 season, and has a message for Miner fans everywhere that are thirsty for a successful season.

“We’ve work so hard to be in this position and we’ve overcome a lot,” he said. “I ask you guys to stick with us, because we’re going to overcome this together.”

“I felt like I was a better player than Division II,” he said.

He decided to bet on himself, and spent the 2017 season at Cerritos College. He recorded 40 tackles, 4.5 tackles for losses and an interception in 10 games, and reignited his recruiting interest. UTEP came calling.

His recruiting visit to El Paso was memorable, as Caldwell got on a plane for the first time ever.

UTEP BASKETBALL COVID•19 FAN PROTOCOLS

FANS ARE ASKED TO FOLLOW CDC GUIDELINES AND UTEP PROTOCOLS: • STAY HOME WHEN YOU ARE SICK.

• Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

• Wear a face covering • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.

• Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash immediately after use.

• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the restroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.

ARRIVING ON CAMPUS/PARKING: • All parking passes will be digital.

• All parking lots will open 2 hours prior to tipoff.

ARRIVING ON CAMPUS/PARKING:

• Gates will open 30 minutes earlier than usual – 90 minutes prior to tipoff compared to one hour – to assist with fan entry and social distancing.

• Fans are highly encouraged to enter and exit the arena through the entrance/exit closest to their parking spot or the entrance/exit closest to their seats.

• Upon arriving at an arena entrance, fans will be social distanced and must have a mask on in order to enter. Fans without a mask will not be allowed to enter.

• Fans are encouraged to have their digital ticket already downloaded to their phone and opened on their screen to expedite screening and entry.

Digital ticket download process: Step 1: Go to utepminers.com/tickets and select “My Account” Step 2: Log in using your credentials Step 3: Select the event you would like to manage Step 4: “Add” tickets to your phone on Apple Wallet or “Save” tickets to your phone on Google Pay • Once inside the arena, fans must leave their face covering/mask on.

ARENA ATTENDANCE: • Fans are required to wear a mask while in the arena. Individuals who refuse to wear a mask while inside the facility will be asked to leave.

• If a fan is unable to wear a mask/face covering due to a disability, a face shield must be worn.

• Fans are asked to try and remain socially distanced at all times while traversing the arena.

• Restrooms will have capacity limits and will be monitored by stadium personnel. Fans should plan accordingly if they need to use these facilities.

• Fans must follow and abide by arena signage and directions provided by arena personnel and security staff.

• All fans will have assigned seats. There will be no general admission seating.

• All aisle seats are not being sold to provide additional distancing between fans, especially for fan movement/flow purposes.

• Fans’ seats are socially distanced and fans must remain in their assigned seats during the entirety of the game (outside of utilizing restrooms, purchasing concessions, etc.). @UTEP @UTEPATHLETICS ATHLETICS

UTEP BASKETBALL COVID•19 FAN PROTOCOLS • Arena security and ushers will monitor the stands and other fan areas to ensure fans remain in the seats they purchased and abide by all arena rules and regulations.

• Restrooms will have capacity limits and will be monitored by arena personnel. Fans should plan accordingly if they need to use these facilities.

• Restroom interiors will be adjusted to provide as much social distancing as possible (e.g. certain sinks and toilets will not be in operation).

• Restroom signage will be installed detailing COVID-19 recommendations (i.e. hand washing procedures) and fans are asked to practice these.

• Traditional concourse displays and setups will be reduced or removed to accommodate social distancing.

• All arena staff and game day personnel will be required to fill out and complete an online COVID-19 screening form prior to arriving to campus for games.

• All arena staff and game personnel will be required to wear face coverings at all times.

• In addition to wearing a mask, concessions and game day vendors will be required to wear gloves.

• Sanitization stations will be erected throughout the arena. Fans should utilize these liberally.

• Frequency of cleaning by custodial staff will be increased, especially in high traffic public areas and items that incur shared use (countertops, railings, doorknobs/door handles, etc.)

• All concession workers will receive safety training, especially education focused on COVID-19 parameters.

• COVID-19 fan protocols will be messaged and reiterated via the video board and public address system.

• The number of concessions stands and points of sale will be reduced compared to a normal year to help accommodate social distancing on the concourse.

OTHER GAME DAY PROTOCOLS

• The concessions menu will be modified to provide more products that are pre-prepped and sealed.

• Clear Plexiglas dividers will be installed at each concession stand.

• Fans are encouraged to plan ahead and pay for concessions and make other game day purchases with debit/credit cards instead of with cash as cash sales will be discouraged.

• Game tickets will only be sold through the following channels prior to game day:

• No in-person sales prior to game day • On game day, the East and North Haskins Center ticket windows will be open for sales and Will Call purposes.

• NOTE – UTEP men’s basketball is SOLD OUT for the season. There will be no single game ticket sales.

• Signage and stanchions will be erected outside concession stands to promote social distancing.

• Concessions items will come with individual utensils, napkins and condiments. Satellite condiment stations will not be in use.

• Water fountains will not be available this year.
