Homecoming Guide 2014
’Birds of a Feather celebrate together
No matter how many years have passed since graduation, Illinois State alumni can always find ways to reconnect and create new memories at Homecoming. This year, plenty of events bring past and current students together to celebrate their shared Redbird heritage. Breanna Grow Staff Writer
Get the Redbird pride flowing Friday at the Alumni Day Luncheon, a formal event to recognize alumni achievements from noon to 2 p.m. in the Brown Ballroom. The event is open to the public, but registration is required to attend and costs $15 per person. Contact Alumni Relations at 309-438-2586 to register. The Town and Gown 5k and 1-mile Fun Run/Walk has proved an alumni favorite since its introduction to Homecoming in 2008. Already the event is shaping up to be a hit once again. “We’re having a great turnout this year,” in part due to reduced race entry fees, Stephanie Duquenne, director of alumni relations at ISU, said. “[The race] is really geared toward alumnistudent relationships. We have alumni that come back every year.” The 5k will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Student Fitness Center. The 1-mile Fun Run/Walk will take place directly after. A Homecoming celebration would be complete without a parade, and no parade would be complete without Illinois State alumni joining their favorite groups in the march. The parade will step off at
the corner of College Avenue and University Street Saturday at 10 a.m. New this year is the Rally Bash. The post-game party will feature live local band The Bygones, appetizers and a cash bar. “It’s one more place to celebrate Redbird spirit and cap off your Homecoming day,” Duquenne said. The bash kicks off at 6 p.m. Saturday in the Brown Ballroom. Tickets are $3 at the door. Bringing students and alumni together is a big part of Homecoming festivities. The opportunity to learn from one another is something both parties should take advantage of. “From an alumni relations standpoint, I can see a mentoring-type relationship,” Duquenne said. “Students love to see what [alumni] took away from ISU. Alumni love intermingling with students, getting to know them Ave Rio / Staff Photographer and seeing how their programs have Homecoming is a chance for alumni to return to their alma mater and reconnect with old classmates. changed.” “Students become alumni,” said Lindsay Vahl, associate director of alumni.” Learn about more Homecoming events alumni relations. “It’s important to No matter where they are in life, Red- at homecoming.illinoisstate.edu and by engage students now so that they can birds have no trouble coming together to downloading the new Illinois State see the benefits of getting involved as enjoy all that Homecoming has to offer. HOMECOMING GUIDE 2014
Find the hidden gems of Homecoming Week Everyone knows about the annual Homecoming game and how important it is. But what about the rest of Homecoming Week? Here are a few events that you may not have heard about. Compiled by Zack Carpenter Staff Writer
Give the Red, Spread the Red Blood Drive: According to The Red Cross, in the U.S there are more than 40,000 patients in need of a blood donation, and every year over nine million people become blood donors. You can help the cause by coming out between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Monday to the Bowling and Billiards Activity Room. Start Homecoming Week off right by helping those in need.
Homecoming Kickoff: Join the excitement and become a part of the annual party to officially start your Homecoming Week. From 6-8 p.m. on Monday, there will be tons of fun activities to enjoy on the Quad. University Program Board Spirit and Traditions Chairperson Nicole Bianchi and coordinator of many of the week’s homecoming events, anticipates a lot of excitement. “The Homecoming Kickoff is here to celebrate the entire week,” Bianchi said. “The live band Spoken Four will be performing, covering top 40 hits from the last decade as well as some of today’s popular songs.” There will be a free BBQ dinner and the Homecoming royalty will be announced as well. ISU President Larry Dietz will be there to address students and open the festivities. Head football coach Brock Spack will also be there to pump up the crowd for the game against South Dakota State University.
Homecoming Carnival:
Redbird Rendezvous:
From 7-11 p.m. on Wednesday, come celebrate one of ISU’s biggest events of the year. The party will be on the first floor of the Bone Student Center and will feature plenty of exciting activities. “There were over a thousand people at last year’s carnival, and we hope to see even more this year,” Bianchi said. Free carnival food, face paintings, henna tattoos and classic carnival games will make sure there is no shortage of entertainment. In addition, students can win prizes and even get their fortune told by a psychic reader. And from 7:30-9:30 p.m. there will be a live performance from ISU’s own Gamma Phi Circus.
Bring your dancing shoes on Friday night to the Brown Ballroom in the Bone Student Center. From 6:30-9:30 p.m. there will be a formal dance to celebrate the week’s festivities. “Redbird Rendezvous is a new event we developed,” Bianchi said. “There will be a live DJ, the crowning of the Homecoming King and Queen and even a roaming magician.” Bianchi says the celebration is free to all ISU students who bring their Redbird ID, and non-ISU students are welcome as well. Formal attire is suggested.
Town and Gown and 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk: Before the football game, come out at 8 a.m. on Saturday to the Student Fitness Center and participate in one, or both, of these running events. The 5K run will begin at the Fitness Center and end on the Quad. The 1-Mile Fun Run begins immediately after the 5K starts. There will be two water stops during the run, and refreshments will be available afterward for all run/walk participants. Archive Photo

HOMECOMING GUIDE 2014
Homecoming Soundtrack Tailgating, football and welcoming alumni back home is what Homecoming is all about. Don’t forget the speakers at your Homecoming festivities to jam out to some feel-good music.
“Day Drinking” by Little Big Town As if the title doesn’t give it enough explanation, “Day Drinking” is a key component on any Homecoming playlist. It gets you in the mood for tailgating and hanging with friends. It’s finally the weekend and better yet, it’s Homecoming weekend. Everyone is brought together by school spirit and tailgating. This song is upbeat and fun for everyone to sing along to.
“Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey
(309) 829 - 6841 810 E. Grove Street Bloomington, IL 61701
Monday-Saturday:
11:00am - 11:00pm
Sunday:
11:00pm - 8:00pm
“Coldest Beer Around”
This classic ’80s jam is one that everyone will know. It gets the crowed excited and toss in a little nostalgia and you’ll have the alumni dancing too. The power ballad is one that will live on forever in everyone and an anthem to classic rock.
“Sweet Child of Mine” by Guns n’ Roses Yet another ’80s jam and crowd pleaser to blast out at Homecoming this year. This is a tune everyone knows the words to and even if you don’t you’ll feel the energy and catch on quick. Who doesn’t love a good hard rock song to celebrate to?
“Pour Some Sugar on Me” by def Leppard If Guns N’ Roses doesn’t get you amped up, “Pour Some Sugar On Me” definitely will. The ’80s was a fantastic era for modern day partying, if you hadn’t picked up on that already. Homecoming is nothing without a little classic heavy metal.
“American Kids” by Kenny Chesney Everyone loves a little country jam. Kenny Chesney’s new song “American Kids” is a buoyant and fun tune to dance and drink to. Homecoming will be a memory you will make each year with your friends. He sings about wild American teenagers and nothing could be more fitting for Homecoming. Compiled by Alex Jenkins / staff writer

Do: Attend a Kegs and Eggs “Pregame” Kegs and eggs is the best part of Homecoming. It is a tradition here at ISU for most college students. This is more or less the “pregame” before the Homecoming parade and tailgating. Everyone wakes up at the crack of dawn to start the party with some drinks and eggs of course. It is the perfect breakfast for the Homecoming festivities.

It can be exciting to get up and start the day with kegs and eggs, knowing the fun events that are about to take place. However, don’t lose your cool too quickly or you will be left in the dust. No one wants to miss out on Homecoming. Otherwise known as: “drink responsibly.”

Homecoming is a long, long day. You start off with kegs and eggs, head to the parade, off to the tailgate, to the game, and then an after party. It’s exhausting even thinking about it. However, t is perfectly acceptable to sneak in a nap mid-day to catch up on some “Z’s” before rounds three and four come around.

ith football season in full W swing, it is a great time of year to show your Redbird pride
- especially at Homecoming. Here are a few ways to show your school spirit during the football season, as well as how to maintain that throughout your time here at ISU.

1 Attend the games Everyone loves to tailgate with their friends and socialize in the parking lot, but not everyone actually attends sports events throughout the year. Show your support for the team you’re tailgating for and buy tickets for the game, or get the Red Alert pass so you can attend more games throughout the year. Cheering on the Redbirds is a great way to show your love for ISU.

Spirit wear: The necessities
Tailgating is the most common way to show school spirit around campus. Parking your car and setting up a BBQ and socializing with friends is a great time. Put the extra effort in and plan ahead of time. Get up early, and get a tailgate spot closer to the stadium, instead of in your front yard. Bringing everyone together really shows the Redbird pride around campus and tailgates are a great way to see your friends and classmates.
3 Apparel Apparel is the best way to show school spirit. ISU apparel is great for class, tailgates, games, or just going back to your hometown for the weekend. When you return home and see your friends from other universities, wearing ISU apparel is a great way to show you are proud to be a Redbird. A great place to check out is Campustown in Uptown. You can create and personalize whatever article of clothing you want. Personalization is cheap, and it is a great way to show your spirit in your own personal style
The best way to show off your school pride is by wearing it. Put on your Redbird gear for this year’s Homecoming festivities. Face Paint
Homecoming is really the only acceptable time to wear your Redbird pride on your face. Reggie Redbird tattoos are the perfect accessory to add an extra pinch of school spirit to your look. Another way to add some fun to your outfit is to draw black football lines or the number of a player on your face with a marker. Paint your face and show your spirit to cheer the Redbirds to a homecoming win.

Red is our main school color. Don’t forget to decorate yourself in anything red you can find. Be bold and take risks; you can’t go wrong with any combination of our three colors. If you don’t have any ISU apparel, a red, white or even a black shirt will suffice. Compiled by Alex Jenkins / Features Staff Writer
Accessorize
Add ISU colored accessories to make your outfit tailgate ready. Break out that stash of colorful beads you’ve had in your room since who knows when or pick up some cheap goodies at the dollar store. Go bold and try a feathered boa, hair bows, and bracelets—you can never be over the top on Homecoming.
Nail Polish Painting your nails is the best way to get ready for a holiday or an exciting event, because even the act itself puts every girl in a festive mood. Dig out the red nail polish and find tutorials on YouTube on how to make fun designs or paint them like footballs. Nails are a small touch but are definitely considered an accessory. Take advantage of the football season to have a nail night with your friends and watch the game. Make it a new fall tradition.
4 Attend school events Instead of going to house parties and bars every weekend, attend a few of the many events ISU hosts such as Up Late at State, Reggie Nights, UPB shows, movie showings and more. Check out the bowling and billiard center and spend a night with your friends on campus rather than drinking. This is a great way to hang out with friends and make some new ones. The ISU website lists the variety of events that go on around campus.
5 Personal promotion Whether you are a student or soon to be alumni, personal promotion is a great way to show your school spirit anywhere you go. License plate covers, cups, key chains and car décor are great to take with you and represent ISU. By showing what a growing university we are, we are encouraging others to check out our school as well. Stop by campus book stores or surrounding stores to find your favorite Redbird swag. HOMECOMING GUIDE 2014
Weekend highlight: ISU vs SDSU Zack Carpenter Staff Writer
The Illinois State Redbirds are set to take on the South Dakota State Jackrabbits in their Homecoming game at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hancock Stadium. This will be the first meeting between the two teams since 2011, when the Redbirds won 20-13. Head Coach Brock Spack believes it will be more of the same. “They haven’t changed much,” Spack said. “They’re well coached and they still play really hard in all phases of the game. They’re disciplined and they’re very tough.” SDSU comes into the game ranked in the Top 10 Coaches’ Poll. They bring plenty of experience and talent to field, and it will be the first big challenge for the Redbirds. But ISU is loaded with experience as well with 20 returning seniors. Included in that list is co-captain Dontae McCoy, a standout safety. McCoy agrees that familiarity is a must in big games. “There’s gonna be a lot of ebbs and flows in the game,” McCoy said. “Having experience in a game like is huge, especially against a very good team.” Receiver Lechein Neblett, fellow cocaptain, also realizes the importance that experience brings to the table. “Once the game starts all the emotions and activities around campus can’t distract you,” Neblett said. “When you have experience, you don’t let those things get to you.” One of the greatest things about the Homecoming game is the intense atmosphere. Every year it draws a great crowd and with the prominent opponent,

Saturday, the Redbirds will take the field to face the South Dakota State Jackrabbits in what is expected to be the toughest game this season. this year will be no different. Sometimes the players’ appreciation of the fans is undervalued, but it cannot be stressed enough how crucial the support from the home fans truly is. “We would be nothing without our fans,” McCoy said. “When they come out it gets us more amped and excited to go out there and put on a good show for them. We love the intensity they
bring and we feed off of their energy.” “People you love are here watching to support you,” Neblett said. “There are so many expectations and you have to protect the house at all times.” It will be the first conference game of the year for both squads, as each tries to gain a strong foothold in the Missouri Valley Conference standings. With high expectations for each team
and both trying to prove their worth, the intensity will be off the charts from the opening kickoff to the last snap of the game. “It’s monumental to get off to a good start,” Neblett said. “We have to establish ourselves as one of the top tier in the conference because it’s such a strong league. We’re looking forward to it.”

Backing the ’Birds with dignity Compiled by Stephanie Fisher Sports Reporter
Every fall, ISU students look forward to Homecoming. Whether it is tailgating, hanging out with friends and family, or watching our Redbird football team bring home a win, there is something for everyone. Make sure as a spectator, though, that you follow the proper rules of fan etiquette when cheering our school on to victory.
DON’T
DO
Get too intoxicated Yeah, that game of flippy cup or that last can of Miller Lite may seem like a good idea at the time, but a football game isn’t that fun to sit through when you’re making a trip to the bathroom because you don’t feel so great.
Bring in the school spirit There is nothing more gratifying for a football player than to look into the stands and see it’s full of students in red and white. Home-field advantage never looked so good. Cheer for our Redbirds When Reggie the Redbird comes around to do the rollercoaster, or Sweet Carolina comes on the speakers, sing it loud and proud. You never know if the noise leads to a turnover, a first down or a touchdown. Junior Paige Meyers thinks the cheering really makes the difference in the atmosphere. “I love hearing how involved the students get. The environment makes me so happy to be a Redbird,” she said. Clean up after yourself A clean campus is a happy campus. Therefore, if you decide to tailgate, bring plenty of garbage bags or cans to dispose of extra food, beer cans or trash.
Be obnoxious People are there to enjoy the atmosphere and the game itself. It’s okay to get into the game, but there is a line when cheering becomes yelling, and playful banter becomes inappropriate. You are representing our school. Keep it classy. Senior softball player Lindsey Greene is a frequent attendee of our football games, and she cannot stress enough Archive Photo how important it is to control yourself. “Fans that yell too much are usually the ones who don’t even know what’s going on during the game. It’s my biggest pet peeve,” Greene said. Trash your surroundings Leaving empty wrappers in the stands or trashing your tailgating spot does nothing but make us look like slobs. Don’t make your mess somebody else’s.
Be respectful to the opposing team There’s nothing visiting fans appreciate more than a neutral environment. Rivalries always make for a competitive atmosphere, but being courteous to the enemy is the right thing to do.
Be disrespectful to fans Whether they are Redbirds or not, it is never okay to be rude or to use foul language, no matter how terrible the game might be. Keep it clean and don’t make the opposing team afraid to return.
ISU vs. SDSU: Who will take home the win? “It will be a hard fight, but I think the ‘Birds will be able to feed off of the momentum and pull out a win.” Ryann Hoffenberg/Sports Editor

“The Redbirds offensive attack will be too much for the Jackrabbits. This will not be as high scoring as previous games, but ISU will prevail 17-6.” Jason Klaer/Sports Reporter
ISU will pull out a close win in a shutout against South Dakota State with the biggest offense coming from Marshaun Coprich. ISU’s home field advantage is hard to pick against.” Adam Iwans/Sports Editor
“Being the homecoming game, ISU should be playing with a lot of pride and passion and they will get the job done.” John Butkus/Sports Reporter
Illinois State’s dominance at home and Tre Roberson’s impressive play will all but guarantee a win. ISU will cruise to a 35-21 win.” Nick Ulferts/Sports Reporter
“South Dakota State is the toughest opponent this year for the Redbirds. ISU will eke out a three-point win.” Todd Marver/Senior Staff

Homecoming sports to check out: going beyond the football hype be competing on all cylinders.
Jason Klaer Sports Reporter
Although the headline game of homecoming will be Saturday afternoon when ISU will take on the Jackrabbits of South Dakota, other athletic teams will be in action as well. While the homecoming celebration will be underway, the ’Birds will
On Friday, the volleyball team will be continuing their Missouri Valley Conference against the other ISU in a matchup in Terre Haute, Indiana. Last season the Redbirds were able to split the season series with the Sycamores, with each home team coming out on top. The squad should be able to participate in homecoming festivities for the rest of the weekend. While the football team will be kicking-off its game Saturday afternoon,
another Illinois State team will be doing the same. The soccer team will have an away match in Evansville to take on the Purple Aces. The ’Birds were able to complete a season sweep of the Aces last season, outscoring their opponent 7-1. The match will kick-off at 1 pm. The women’s tennis team will be competing in the MVC Individual Championships in Des Moines, Iowa on Oct. 3-5. The young team will look to go far into the tournament against several other school from the Valley conference. Junior Kadi Ilves is
the only returning Redbird from last season’s squad. ISU gymnasts will be going in an intra-squad match at Horton Fieldhouse on Saturday as well. This will be the first scheduled event for the Redbirds before starting any real competition. ISU teams will be spanning the Midwest this weekend in hopes for the same reason, to come out on top. Come support all the Redbird teams this Homecoming and show your Redbird Pride. While the football team often gets the most attention, all of these teams work hard and go all out to represent ISU to the fullest.
