Skate for the Soles to help children in Africa
DAILY CROSSWORD

Feature your company in our daily crossword. Sponsor two columns wide by one inch tall for only $50 per week.
Help the less fortunate children in Africa while skating with friends at the second annual Skate for the Soles fundraiser Saturday at Fairview Skate Park. The event, hosted by Skate Ilstu and Stuff for the Poor, will start at 2 p.m. Masa Sun, president of Skate Ilstu, explains the benefit is what they call a “skateboard jam.”
“It’s an all-day event where everybody can skate around the park,” Sun said. Along with the free skating, there will be several other little events taking place throughout the day. These include a Best Trick Contest, a Best Line Contest and a Game of SKATE Tournament. Each contest rewards the winners with various prizes. In order to enter the contests, the participant is required to donate either a pair of closed-toed, laced
shoes or $5 to the organization Stuff for the Poor. There will also be a raffle with each ticket costing $2. Providence Rubingisa, the president and executive director of Stuff for the Poor, explained their organization is one that strives to help out the poor children in Uganda and other areas of Africa. They take clothing and money donations from all local communities and send them to the less fortunate. All of the proceeds from Skate for
the Soles will go toward this organization, essentially helping the children fund their education and clothing. “We are a small organization, but with a unique vision in which people can donate things from their closet to turn into money to help kids in Africa,” Rubingisa said. Last year, this event helped support 30 orphans with shoes and clothes collected from different schools and churches, he added. see skate page 6

Meanwhile, jobs in those areas are opening. Very soon, companies will not have the people to fill the positions they need to keep running. High school students who are interested in becoming nurses and are contemplating a potential career in nursing are now going to have the opportunity to experience nursing firsthand through the Mennonite College of Nursing (MCN) over the summer months. Starting this summer, the MCN is offering its first annual Pre-entry and Retention Opportunities for Undergraduate Diversity (PROUD) summer camp that is focused on high school students gaining a variety of learning experiences that help to motivate and encourage their success throughout their remaining years of high school. This June will be the pilot for PROUD where students will be able to come live in the residence halls at ISU for three days and two nights. Catherine Miller, associate dean of academics for the MCN, expressed the excitement of the department to begin the program and reach out to underprivileged high school students to encourage their own success and development. “This camp is part of our grant plans to increasing diversity of the nursing work force in our
