College: a place of unlimited opportunities MY VIEW HOLLY PETROVICH Editor in Chief
I
am sure by now you’ve had several dreams, exciting or terrifying, about that first day of college. But don’t worry, you will not show up to class naked. And I’m here to ensure that you don’t even forget a pencil. Whether you’re a freshman taking your first college courses, or transferring from your local community college, the first year at a university is always nerve-wracking. I still remember the exact moment getting into the car after Preview three years ago, having the mixed thoughts of “Run. Run as fast as you can,” and “I can eat mac and cheese
Although it may seem like it, you will NEVER be alone at ISU. There are potential friendships in every nook on campus. Have nothing in common with your roommate? That’s okay, walk down the hall and befriend the girl binge-watching “Orange is the New Black.” Also, take advantage of the free services offered on campus. Yes, I said free. For those moments when you feel not-sogreat, the Student Health Center will fix you; when you can’t remember what your junior year English teacher said about thesis statements, the Julia N. Visor Academic Center can edit your paper. There’s even the Student Counseling Services for when you just don’t know how to deal with your most recent breakup. ISU has your back. As much as I wish I could make all your pre-college jitters go away, those nerves are inevitable. But one thing that always helped me get past the butterflies is remembering this:
for dinner every night?!” Getting thrown into adulthood is the definition of bittersweet; you live independently and make your own rules, but also taking the chance that your random roommate is a secret serial killer; you can nap whenever you want, but nobody will wake you when your alarm doesn’t go off. I’m not going to lie, you will have several “I want my mommy” moments, but those are the moments that are going to make you stronger. When you can’t afford a burrito bowl and froyo, Dad won’t be there to hand you $20, so you’ll have to get a job at Einstein’s. Little do you know now, but that job selling bagels may give you the customer service and leadership skills you’ll need in the real world. In the end, it’s not so bad. Soon, you will be forced to make your own decisions and solve your problems like the new adult that you are. Exciting, right? 1
every student is currently or has previously gone through the exact same situation. And made it out alive. And so will you. The cliché “college is the best four years of your life” rings true. I mean, when else will you get the chance to play Qudditch before covering the football game for the campus newspaper? (*cough, cough* The Vidette is always accepting applications) But if you don’t take advantage of all the opportunities, college will just be your high school sequal. So go to the Alamo and buy every piece of ISU apparel you can get your hands on to show off your Redbird spirit, and soon, everyone will call you the next Asher Roth, because you love college. Oh, one more thing. Save some flex dollars for finals -you’ll need ‘em. Holly Petrovich is editor and chief of The Vidette. She is a senior journalism major from Bartlett.

automatically enrolled in student health insurance. Derege said, student health insurance works together with the primary insurance that a student’s family may have. The Student Health Services website, HealthServices. illinoissstate.edu/insurance, outlines what coverage is available with student health insurance. The co-pay or front door fee for most services is $11 and students can utilize student health services even if they do not have student health insurance but are insured by another provider. If there is an additional fee, students will receive a bill when they checkout after their appointment and can submit their insurance information at that time. “All students at ISU have to have some type of insurance. That is why we offer the Student Health Insurance for all students and the opportunity to keep this insurance as a supplement to any family insurance,” Derege said. Students can make appointments for the Student Health Center three different ways—by phone, in person or on the center website. The phone number to call for an appointment is 309438-2778. The Health Center website, which has a secured appointment page, can be found at HealthServices.illinoisstate.edu/appointments. Students will be able to see a doctor within 24 hours of making an appointment, according to Derege. The Student Health Centers also has a pharmacy for students who need to fill or refill prescriptions, or where they can buy over-the-counter medicine at a reduced price. Students are welcome to use the pharmacy at any point in time to buy OTC medicine. The pharmacy accepts most prescription insurance cards and will refill prescriptions from other pharmacies.

ISU goes smoke and tobacco free
DISCOVER DOWNTOWN!
By JULIA MORENO News Editor
DINING
Illinois State University became a smoke and tobacco free campus under a new state law as of July 1. The State of Illinois’ SmokeFree Campus Act, signed into law last August, bans the use of tobacco products and smoking on campus property. ISU joins more than 700 universities and colleges nationally with similar restrictions. The Smoke-Free Campus Act defines campus property as buildings, grounds, parking lots, and university owned and operated vehicles. “We hope there is a cooperative effort between students, staff, and faculty,” said Aaron Woodruff, University Police Chief. “We want to make sure this law is taken seriously.” Woodruff says the only exception to the law is that smoking will still be permitted in personal vehicles traveling through campus or that are parked on campus. ISU’s current smoking policy, which restricts smoking to selected areas, remains in effect until July 1. The ISU policy website will be updated to reflect the new law and will include an updated map showing the entire campus as a smoke and tobacco-free zone. Additionally, the ISU Health Promotion and Wellness offices are offering free Quit Kits to any students, faculty and staff. The kits will be available in 187 McCormick Hall anytime during offices hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Quit Kits will also be available in the Fall at the GSpot—a Health Promotion and

Additionally, students can pick up regular prescriptions at the pharmacy. The Health Center website also lists common medications and OTC medicine the pharmacy offers. Wellness’ mobile gazebo. “A Quit Kit is filled with a variety of information and items that have been proven to help people on their journey to quit using tobacco,” said Erin Link, Coordinator, Communication & Marketing for Health Promotion and Wellness. Link says items in the kit include cinnamon-flavored gum toothpicks, and candy, along with silly putty. Research has shown these items help people with an oral fixation associated with smoking as well as keeping their hands busy. “There is also an in-depth pamphlet about quitting tobacco, which includes information on campus and local cessation resources and a calendar to help people track their progress,” Link said. The Quit Kits have been available since the fall of 2014. In addition, there are over-thecounter cessation products available at the pharmacy at the Student Health Services in the Student Services Building.

Women’s golf The women’s golf schedule has not yet been released. The ’Birds ended the season on a high note, finishing fourth overall at the MVC Championship. The club returns Kiley Walsh and Renee Solberg. Walsh was one of two Redbirds to finish in the top-10 in the season finale, and Solberg shot her best round on the final day to grab some momentum heading into this season.
Men’s golf The men’s golf schedule has not yet been released. After a season in which he garnered All-MVC honors, Tyler Gentilella returns to spearhead the Redbirds’ club. After being projected to finish second in the MVC Championship, the ’Birds staggered to a ninth place finish. After ending the season on a low note, the club will look to use last year’s finish as motivation heading into the 2015 season. 15
