verybody loves good food. Good food makes eating pleasurable instead of being just a way to obtain the necessary nutrients needed to continue on with the day. Thankfully, the two dining centers at ISU offer a variety of delicious options that can help new students feel like they are eating at home. The Watterson Dining Commons is recognized as one of the better dining centers in Illinois, and students seem to think the same. The dish that seems to be the most popular among the student body is the chicken tenders, which are served very frequently. Students are willing to wait in line for extended periods of time to get their hands on them. Other home cooked options that students tend to like are the macaroni and cheese, sausage bar and the orange chicken at the Asian station. Orange chicken is served almost every day, which makes it an excellent option to fall back on when you are not in the mood to eat any of the other options offered. Linkins Dining Center, located at Tri Towers, also offers home cooked meals and even a Mongolian grill. Some of the home cooked dishes are great, but students also seem to flock to the stations where customization is encouraged. Watterson Dining Commons tries to combat the monotony of typical college dining by giving the students a chance to create their own meal. The sandwich bar is vast, possessing many different meats, vegetables and condiments that fit whatever criteria students might have. The salad bar offers the same amount of customization and it happens to be my personal favorite part of the dining center. The pasta is much of the same mentioned above, and seems to be a student favorite as well. Eating the same food can get boring, and the Illinois State Dining Center has broken the stereotype that students in college have limited options when it comes to food. Vast customization and hot, home cooked meals keep students happy and satisfied, which is what most other dining centers fail to achieve.

Did You Know?

• Campus Dining Services offers students the option of meeting with a registered dietitian to learn more about their nutrition.

• If students have food allergies, celiac disease, or special diets (including vegetarianism), accommodations can be made if Campus Dining Services is notified.

• Students have the ability to view weekly menus online for both Watterson Dining Commons and Marketplace at Linkins to learn the meal options as well as the appropriate serving sizes.

• Watterson Dining Commons finished renovations in 2010, and Marketplace at Linkins completed its renovations in 2007.

Dining Center Hours:

• If students run out of meal swipes on their Redbird IDs, they have the option of using flex dollars or real money at the dining centers.

Monday – Thursday: 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

• Students are limited to only three carry out meals per day when they have the unlimited meal plan.

Saturday: 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Friday: 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Sunday: 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Top 5 Best Places To Eat On Campus Kelley Bowles Reporter

1. McAlister’s Deli: McAlister’s has a wide selection of sandwiches, salads, soups and more. Its famous iced tea has students lined up out the door on Free Tea Day, and the best part is that McAlister’s accepts your flex dollars. 2. Jimmy John’s: Craving a sub and looking for a freaky fast delivery? With a location on Main Street as well as North Street, students can’t get enough. “We work really hard to stay clean and especially with all of these other restaurants in Uptown, it feels good,” Assistant Manager Stephanie Hospelhorn said.

3. The Rock Restaurant: From gyros and Mediterranean choices, to American classics and more, the Rock Restaurant in Uptown has tasty options for everyone. “The gyro is always number one, or the garlic chicken, as well as the

Falafel with the sauce we get from overseas,” Manager Said Saliba said. 4. Pub II: Open since 1974 and being the first place in Normal with a liquor license, students can’t stay away from Pub II. “We are famous for the cheese balls. They are breaded, deep fried and filled with cheddar or pepper jack cheese,” Manager Terry Stralow said. 5. Firehouse Pizza: For many ISU students, the pizza of choice is Firehouse Pizza in Uptown. “Firehouse Pizza has the best pizza and wings in walking distance on campus,” sophomore Danielle Farrow said. Firehouse has been voted Best Pizza three years in a row by ISU students. “The BLT Pizza is pretty mindblowing,” Mananger Terry Bilbert said.

Balance is key as a freshman, students say holly petrovich News Editor

Coming into college as a freshman can be very intimidating; the transition from not living at home and being away from what is comfortable can make anyone uneasy. Luckily, ISU students have contributed their tips and advice to freshmen, hoping to make their first year run smoothly. Across the board, students stressed the same thing for incoming freshmen to keep in mind, which is to maintain an equal balance in life and be well-rounded. “My advice would be to learn balance and prioritize,” Chris Deligiannis, sophomore renewable energy major, said. Alexa Mundzic, sophomore nursing major, agreed. “Try to find your balance between schoolwork and having fun with all of the friends you meet,” Mundzic said. While meeting new people is a very exciting and important part of the college

experience, freshmen need to remember why they are at school — to get an education, reminded junior Matt Stine. “Don’t let partying get in the way of schoolwork. While it’s great to socialize and make new friends, the purpose of school is to educate yourself,” Stine, business major, explained. Another area that may stress freshmen out includes classes and deciding on a major. While there is still a lot of time to figure it out, Alisa Mastrodomenico, senior athletic training major, suggested taking advantage of all of the classes available. “Broaden the types of classes you take freshman year, so you can truly find your passion. I did that and it really helped me realize what I wanted to do!” Mastrodomenico said. Additionally, time management is crucial with a student life according to Katie Owen, sophomore special education

major. She suggested doing homework during the day to keep priorities straight. “You’ll find you have so much ‘me’ time at the end of the day that way,” she added. Aside from the academics, college is a great way to meet people and learn from experiences. ISU offers so many different clubs and organizations, that any student can easily find one to fit into. “Get active, involved and find good ways to spend your new spare time,” Eric Walsh, sophomore exercise science major, said. Finding a place of belonging in an unfamiliar school can seem overwhelming, especially during the first semester, Jennifer Wilson, special education major graduate, said. “Just don’t be afraid to put yourself out there, try new things, and meet a lot of people,” she advised.
