PRODUCERS’ NOTES Welcome to the 16th edition of the Vancouver International Dance Festival.
The 2016 VIDF includes twelve companies from Canada, Japan, Sweden, and Cuba. Our Roundhouse shows begin with the Vancouver premiere of Company Virginie Brunelle’s audacious Foutrement. Natsu Nakajima performs Like Smoke Like Ash, transmitting, through her 50 years of butoh dance experience, a message from butoh’s past to its future. EDAM’s artistic
director, Peter Bingham, returns to the VIDF with The Secret Life of Trees, where text, video, and synaptic communication between EDAM’s dancers evoke his meditations on nature. Vancouver’s sensational Company 605 gives the world premiere of Vital Few, a work that has been in development for the past two years with the support of the VIDF and other members of the CanDance Network of Presenters. At the Vancouver Playhouse, we will be presenting Book of Love, created by Kokoro Dance in celebration of its 30th anniversary, and performed with the Standing Wave music ensemble. Also at the Playhouse, don’t miss the Canadian premiere of Possible Impossible/ Crisálida, a co-production by Memory Wax (Sweden) and Danza Teatro Retazos (Cuba) - otherworldly dance that excites the imagination! On the Exhibition Hall stage, enjoy performances by Circadia Indigena, Sujit Vaidya, Project Soul, and dumb
instrument Dance ranging in expression from indigenous to Bharatanatyam to hip hop, and contemporary. At the Woodward’s Atrium, where we are building a new home base for the VIDF, catch performances by Mascall Dance and Raven Spirit Dance on February 28th, March 6th, and 13th at 2pm and 4pm. We invite you to take part in weekday noon-hour life drawing sessions at the Roundhouse or join a class by one of our visiting artists. Open daily in the Roundhouse Exhibition Hall is an exhibition of sculpture by Ken Clarke, drawings by Val Nelson, and VIDF photography by Chris Randle. If you are a past patron of the VIDF, we thank you for your support. If you are new to the VIDF, welcome to our annual festival of diverse and delightful contemporary dance! — BARBARA BOURGET & JAY HIRABAYASHI

Investing in creativity – the path to Canadian prosperity.
Investir dans la création, c’est investir dans un avenir + prospère
The future is now. Focusing on innovation is the surest way to stay in step with and take advantage of our changing world. We all have access to an unlimited, renewable resource: the ability to create, dream, imagine and re-invent our future. In Canada, 671,000 cultural workers, including 140,000 professional artists, energize our social, human and economic development. Culture’s contribution to the GDP is close to $50 billion. Investing in creativity is the path to Canadian prosperity.
At the Canada Council for the Arts we are proud to support the Vancouver International Dance Festival because art is serious business – for individuals, for society, for the present and for our future.

On behalf of the BC Arts Council, I would like to congratulate the Vancouver International Dance Festival Society and thank its staff, board of directors and dedicated volunteers for bringing together so many talented dancers from British Columbia and from as far away as Japan and Cuba to perform at this year’s extraordinary event. Over its 16-year history, this festival has transported appreciative audiences to distant lands and cultures through the dynamic artistry of contemporary dance. From February 28 to March 19, residents and visitors alike will have the opportunity to enjoy performances, workshops and other activities at several downtown venues, adding to the creative vibrancy and economy of Greater Vancouver. With funding made available by the Government of British Columbia, the BC Arts Council is pleased to be able to financially support this wonderful celebration of multicultural diversity through the artistic excellence of dance!

FOUTREMENT Foutrement explores infidelity: men and women at the mercy of temptation and primal instincts. Three dancers—a man and two women, in love, ripped apart, wounded, betrayed—move with racked bodies, sagging under the weight of Love’s disillusionment. Throughout their sexual adventures, the illusion of love persists, doubt mixes with desire, and what began as attraction ends in obsession. When reason becomes passion’s slave, love and sex are confused, and the game of seduction mixes with the game of the forbidden, ecstasy and suffering become one. A string of scenes expertly interwoven by light and music, Foutrement draws its inspiration from classical dance, yet is unashamedly contemporary. At times lyrical, at times agitated and choppy, Virginie Brunelle’s work is always physically powerful and remarkably emotive.

RESOLVE ‘REsolve’ is a courageous perspective of an individual exploring thoughts, feelings, emotions and actions, confronting corporate corruption and the destruction of our biosphere. In this dance, we are observing from political cultures the perspectives and personal experiences of hopes, dreams and fears; exploring the thoughts, feelings, emotions and actions when confronted by an increasingly authoritarian system. However, with peace we share the insight of the internal thoughts and decisions of

the individual forced to confront losing one’s human rights and freedoms; participating with nature and fighting back or becoming like the oppressors’ death wish. But, also, ‘REsolve’ to peacefully overcome our present slavery to physiological bondage where you have no choice but to stand up for freedom - inspiring and moving at many levels: politically, culturally, regionally and intercontinentally. ‘REsolve’ addresses issues of the de-colonisation of self; our tribal dances of spirituality; enhancing
the bio-connection to landscapes, plants, wildlife and water; shape shifting and confinement; sexual abuse issues; racism; classism; the codification of slavery; consumerism; and rural lifestyles. ‘REsolve’ incorporates traditional and contemporary dance in solos, duets and trios with original music. With dancers Byron Chief-Moon, Jerry Longboat and Nyla Carpentier.

SUJIT VAIDYA THE LONGING COURTESAN Spring has sprung, and passions are soaring. As flora and fauna around her mate, the courtesan calls upon her king to come make love to her and fulfill her. I’m filled with desire for you, she says, and I need you, in this moment!! After all, you are the greatest of lovers, and I miss being intimate with you. My body aches with longing, when I think of our passionate lovemaking. Cupid’s passion-filled arrows torment me, she says, as they strike relentlessly. I burn with desire when I hear the cuckoo birds orgasming in the mango grove. The cool breeze on my skin makes me long for you even more; the moonbeams burn my skin as my thoughts are consumed with making love to you and my breasts throb with burning desire for your touch!

LIKE SMOKE LIKE ASH The Japanese characters for ‘smoke’ (煙) and ‘ash’ (灰) both contain the character of ‘fire’ (火). It is as though they etymologically recall their material origin in fire, and visually indicate themselves as the next stage of transformation in the ‘life of fire.’ Hijikata would often tell his disciples to become ‘disappearing things, appearing things’. ‘Disappearance’, for him, meant more than simple self-erasure; it contained the element of something else. This structure of containment, with one thing harbouring the possibility of another, might be termed a kind of ‘compound’. Just like the ‘charcoal’ (火種) hidden in the embers of a dying fire. This is the way I learned to live and dance from Tatsumi Hijikata and Kazuo Ohno; it is the way I have danced my entire life. In the brief encounter of one night, a lasting message might be fleetingly passed from an old generation to a new, like the ‘life’ of a firework in the night. With this dance, I pray and pass a flower to those who have already gone.

In the past year, NGJC has appeared at Word On the Street, Christmas Craft Fairs, nightclubs, poetry readings, album release parties, nightclubs, gardens, bistros, salons....among many locations. The Nijinksy Gibber Jazz Club engages in a process we call Public Research. It works something like this: Take a group of brilliant improvisers at the top of their game: Justine Chambers, Billy Marchenski, Darcy McMurray, Amber Funk-Barton, Chris Wright, Lara Barclay and musician/composer Stefan Smulovitz for example, our most recent members. Add 1 canny choreographer concocting devious, outside-the-box scores. Result? Witty, current, spontaneous dance just when you least expect it.

BOOK OF LOVE Barbara initially was inspired by the lyrics to a song entitled The Book of Love written by Stephin Merritt of The Magnetic Fields. Here are some of the lyrics:
The book of love is long and boring No one can lift the damn thing It’s full of charts and facts, some figures and instructions for dancing But I, I love it when you read to me. And you, You can read me anything. The creation of a new dance work is a magical process. We began by choreographing about 90 minutes
of material. Jeff Ryan came to our work-in-progress rehearsals and performances, picking up the tempos and time signatures. He then wrote his own response to our theme of creating a Book of Love and distilled the score to sixty-one minutes in length. Jonathan Baldock flew in from an artist residency in Germany to take part in our creation process. Jonathan is inspired by Dada, the art movement in the early 20th century that appeared to reject logic and embrace chaos and irrationality. Dada challenged the status quo including the presumptions of prevailing artistic trends. Jonathan challenged us to do our choreography in vibrant costumes of saturated primary colours with floor length sleeves. He created large head pieces of sculpted wicker to exaggerate and confuse our personalities. Jeff’s
music and Jonathan’s costumes transformed our choreography into something we could not imagine ourselves. We are blessed to be able to work with such talented artists. Gerald King then added his evocative lighting to transform our work. Gerald has worked with us for thirty-one years and we have relied on him ever since to bathe our work in inspired emotive lighting textures. Molly McDermott and Billy Marchenski have been invaluable to us in this creative process. Their discipline, energy, intelligence, physical agility, and dedication have played a profound part in the building of this piece. Standing Wave’s interpretation of Jeff’s music is simply glorious. It is such a pleasure to dance to live music played by outstanding musicians.

PROJECT SOUL
EXCERPTS FROM INTO THE TAO Kim Sato is excited to present excerpts from her new work in progress Into the Tao featuring the street dance collective, Project Soul. This BC Arts Council supported project explores the intriguing mind of a freestyle street dancer in the heart clenching moments of a battle. This choreographic work will journey into a street dancer’s emotions during the stages of battle: anticipation, conflicting internal dialogues, and the release, surrender and acceptance once all is over. This performance highlights the talents of Vancouver’s most distinguished, highly skilled street dancers, who are accustomed to pushing their bodies to extreme physical limits. Kim is thankful to be working alongside Heather Laura Gray developing this entertaining work, which represents the next chapter for Project Soul. The beautiful chemistry
between the Project Soul members can be experienced as they come together to entertain and spread the passion they have for street dance. Each individual has studied with the original creators of their specialized dance style, devoting themselves to learning history and pushing their bodies beyond limitation. Their mission is to bring the underground culture of street dance to a more accessible platform. Their devotion keeps them fully immersed in the Hip Hop and funk-style culture and they continue to train, perform and battle worldwide. Audiences won’t want to miss out on witnessing these dancers imaginatively pushing themselves outside their physical and creative boundaries. Their mission is to continually strive to inspire as many SOULS through their love and passion for street dance culture.

THE SECRET LIFE OF TREES My interest in this subject is a direct reflection of living here in the west coast rain forest. Do trees have senses? I have discovered that the underground is where the forest finds its connectivity. The uniformity of the forest above ground gives the impression that each tree stands alone. In fact, they are linked by communicating through intricate entwining root systems. I have been researching this new work with the dancers for the last couple of seasons. We have been working on using our senses as inspiration for making choreographic and improvisational choices. We have developed different
sensory pathways to connect to each other in making these dances. Felt, seen, heard – all aspects of how the dancers are communicating. The notion that trees communicate has become more obvious as my research has continued. As it turns out, my imagination has not steered far from what is actually happening in the forest. So the simple modes of communication that the dancers use to relate to each other in the different sections of this work are not so far from the truth. - Peter Bingham

FROST EXPLODING TREES MOON A solo piece following the journey of a woman traveling her trap line. She finds a place to set up camp, builds her temporary home, and settles into the centre of her world of breath and perception. The piece tracks a physical human journey as well as a spiritual one. It asks: How does one house one’s spirit? What keeps us close to earth and what makes us long for stars? Choreographed by: Michelle Olson and Floyd Favel Performed by: Michelle Olson
STEPPIN’ An energetic, knee slapping, toe tapping contemporary Metis jig solo created by Jeanette Kotowich, with original sound designed by Wayne Lavallee and guest Metis fiddler JJ Lavallee. Musically driven by the fiddle’s undeniable force, the impulse for movement is sparked like a flint ignites fire. With electricity of the jig and fancy steps that rebound the earth – for a moment in time, milliseconds before you return to earth - you are propelled in the direction of spirit, like a horse running in the open wild. Choreographed and Performed by: Jeanette Kotowich

STILL RHYMING Choreographed and danced by Ziyian Kwan, in collaboration with songwriter and performer, Joseph Hirabayashi, Still Rhyming is a new work inspired by the prose of Patti Smith. The piece responds to a recent encounter with the author and, in content, considers the liminal space between what is real and what is imagined. Narratives and impressions from Smith’s recently published book, M Train, invoke a danced koan. Sometimes, a remembered sentence is a starting point for a neighborhood of movement. Other times, a few lonely words bring into action scenes and sonic scores. Still Rhyming invites the ghost within to dance, assail and breathe through a whimsical kinship of imagery, sound and motion.
dumb instrument Dance is a collage of activities generated by dance artist Ziyian Kwan. Ranging from unorthodox interactions to formal works for stage, dumb instrument Dance revels in creations that provoke collaborative investigation across the genres of dance, music and written word.

VITAL FEW Vital Few is a brand-new work created with and for six unique performers; a collaborative undertaking utilizing mechanisms of constant codependence and interrelation between the dancers. Each performer’s own distinct expression, movement, and choice-making weave together to collectively build the moving sculpture of the group body, the whole becoming greater than the sum of its parts. Acknowledging both an autonomy and responsibility to the group, the struggle of
coexistence within the set parameters and finite space continuously informs the content of this hyper-connected dance. The work pushes the company into new physical territory to further explore the essence of unison and togetherness, the negotiation of group dynamics, and the preservation of self inside the collective consciousness.

MEMORY WAX / RETAZOS

POSSIBLE IMPOSSIBLE This 50 min dance piece takes off from a landscape where known laws of time, space and power have ceased to be valid. Imagine an associative world of magic, dreams and absurd impressions – where one dream relieves the next, and you fall, fly and balance between reality and fantasy. In this surprising world of dreams, doors opens to other universes, where the mind is free and the impossible becomes possible. Created by Memory Wax from Sweden and Danza Teatro Retazos from Cuba.
MARCH 11-12 @ 8PM Vancouver Playhouse Section A: $50.00 Section B: $40.00 Group of 10 or more: $35.00 Playhouse Pass (2 shows): $70.00 For tickets visit VIDF.CA or phone 604.662.4966
CRISÁLIDA In this action-packed 45 min dance piece with 8 world class artists, Memory Wax and Danza Teatro Retazos explore the need to belong and be part of a community while juxtaposing the desire for freedom. With contemporary dance as a base, elements of pantomime, hip hop and folklore are visited as contrasting characters emerge. Everyday scenes are enhanced in a constantly changing dream-world where memories and desires are intertwined. Crisálida is a performance about belonging and identity portrayed with humor and poetry.

MONDAY TO FRIDAY February 29 – March 15, 2016 (except for March 4) @ Harbour Dance Centre (927 Granville St, 3rd Floor). Barbara Bourget: Mon-Wed-Fri: 10-11:30am; Jay Hirabayashi: Tue-Thur: 9:30-11:30am
These classes are for intermediate/ advanced students. Class Fee: FREE Kokoro Dance classes build strength, flexibility, and stamina, as well as developing technical and performance skills. The difference between the two types of classes reflects the different approaches to the same end taken by Barbara and Jay. Barbara’s classes focus on technical training and have a consistent structure from warm-up to movement in space. Jay’s classes are more eclectically varied and include more time for improvisational exploration. The two approaches complement each other and dancers are recommended to take both.
Since graduating from university, Virginie Brunelle has clearly made her mark on the contemporary dance scene. In 2009, she launched her eponymous dance company and created her first awardwinning piece, Les cuisses à l’écart du coeur, presented in Montreal and in Italy. Following her successful debut, Virginie’s second piece Foutrement, developed in collaboration with Tangente, was presented and co-produced by the Théâtre La Chapelle, and then toured to more than 12 European cities. Enthusiastic reviews lead her to open La Chapelle’s 2011 fall season with her third opus Complexe des genres. Since then, the piece has been presented in Europe and in many cities throughout Québec, also gaining her second prize at Denmark’s Aarhus International Choreography Competition, and officially opening the 2012 edition of the CINARS. Virginie premiered PLOMB, co-produced by L’Agora de la danse to open their 2013 fall season.

Woodward’s Atrium Studio
WE ARE BUILDING A NEW HOME FOR THE VIDF In a vote on October 1, 2014, Vancouver City Council unanimously approved Kokoro Dance, Vancouver International Dance Festival, Vancouver Moving Theatre, and Raven Spirit Dance as tenants of the former W2 Community Media Arts Society premises in the Woodward’s heritage building, including second-floor offices, as well as main floor and basement studio spaces. In the past year, we have been working hard to re-imagine these spaces and turn them into resources for the greater performing arts and Downtown Eastside communites. We have raised $565,000 to renovate the former W2 Cafe and turn it into a dance studio, and to reconfigure the W2 basement production space into
a production studio that can be used for creation, rehearsal, performance, and recording purposes. W2 Media Arts Society’s mandate is to provide opportunities for residents of the Downtown Eastside to experience the arts as audience and for personal growth and expression as aspiring and practicing artists, as well as for personal and collective voice for advocacy on issues affecting the community. There clearly are challenges in managing this facility that we must address since our own intentions are not dissimilar to those of W2. Renovations are scheduled to begin in February, 2016 and we hope to have
the basement production studio ready for use by the end of March. While the $565,000 that we have raised will enable us to put in sprung dance floors, lighting grids, a new dressing room with showers, toilet, and sink in the basement, as well as electrical upgrading and initial acoustic soundproofing, the devalued Canadian dollar has shrunk our equipment purchase capacity by as much as 40% as our budgets were created before the dollar’s dramatic drop in value. After the renovations are completed, we will need to hire more staff to manage rentals, and to provide maintenance, technical support, and security. As with all new enterprises, there are startup
35 costs that can exceed revenues until the studios are generating regular revenues. These are not new challenges for us. We started Kokoro Dance in 1986 with no funding in place and four kids in tow. We started the VIDF in 2000 with no funding in place. Kokoro Dance has created over 190 dance works and presented over 1,000 shows. The VIDF has presented over 240 dance artists/companies. It has not been easy to do what we do, but we are driven by a passionate love of the art of dance. We want to make our new studios affordable and accessible. We want to be able to provide access to DTES groups who have no financial means to pay for the use of these spaces. We are grateful to the City of Vancouver for awarding us this new home. We are determined to show that the City made the right choice in giving us a long-term lease to continue our creative work in this wonderful space — and we would appreciate your help. We are embarking on a major
fundraising campaign to raise the funds to complete the renovations needed to make these studio spaces into state of the art facilities that will provide much needed space for artists to create works that embody the heart, soul, mind, and spirit attributes that constitute the essence of what art provides to transform and define humanity. We invite you to donate to either the VIDF Society or the Kokoro Dance Theatre Society to help us create a sustainable environment where art can breathe new life into the DTES which benefits the greater Vancouver performing arts community. Both societies are registered charitable organizations. Donations are tax deductible and we will acknowledge your donations in our printed and online publications.
ca or through the Canada Helps website (https://www.canadahelps.org/en/). You can also call our office (604) 662.7441) to make a credit card donation or respond to one of our email newsletters that will have links to our donation pages. Monthly contributions are a great way to make smaller donations over time. We thank you in advance for your support. VAL NELSON
ART EXHIBITION & LIFE DRAWING
Val Nelson is a Vancouver-based visual artist whose past experience as a ballet dancer informs the spaces captured in her paintings and drawings. A 2003 finalist in the Royal Bank Canadian Painting Competition, Val has been the recipient of Canada Council, BC Arts Council, and Vancouver Foundation grants, and her work can be found in public collections that include Agnes Etherington Art Centre, Canada Council Art Bank, Royal Bank, Surrey Art Gallery, and Vancouver General Hospital, as well as private collections in North America and abroad.
KEN CLARKE Ken Clarke is a sculptor living and working in Vancouver, British Columbia. Known for his figurative work, grotesque faces, water and architectural features, he has made a departure to discover work with deeper meaning and is presently working with natural materials. Always amazed by what nature has created through erosion and time, he has been inspired to explore organic forms and to convey the essence of that process. He has followed Kokoro’s work for many years, and is inspired by their creative force. Building upon the conversation between gesture and movement in dance, he works intuitively, weaving willow branches into flowing form.
CHRIS RANDLE Vancouver-based photographer Chris Randle draws from his archives of Vancouver International Dance Festival photography to bring you highlights of his work capturing the performing arts in motion.
