make up this year’s festival. While the Provincial Health Office is now allowing full capacity at our venues, we are keeping our attendance at 50% to better ensure social spacing in our seated shows. Vaccination cards proving full vaccinations against COVID-19 are required as is wearing masks except for those who have difficulty breathing through masks or when you are consuming beverages or food. Please maintain social distancing wherever possible at events where there is no seating. Please be kind and respectful to your fellow dance lovers. Dance is an ephemeral art form that has a profound and lasting impact. We produce the VIDF as a labour of love for the art of contemporary dance. We started this festival 22 years ago without any funding support, but now

receive grants from the City of Vancouver, Province of BC, British Columbia Arts Council, Department of Canadian Heritage, and the Canada Council for the Arts. While we are grateful for this support, we are also thankful for the generous support from individual donors who enable us to produce this festival. Please join these individual angels in supporting the VIDF by buying a ticket to a show and bringing a friend or additionally donating when attending our free in-person and livestreamed shows. We hope to see your beautiful faces and feel your warm hearts at the 2022 VIDF. Yours in dance,

Barbara Bourget and Jay Hirabayashi

MARION LANDERS

For Coloured Girls: Out of the Womb is inspired by Ntozake Shange’s famous choreopoem. It examines the cycle of life from an intergenerational perspective in a family with roots in the ‘Coloured’ Community of Cape Town, South Africa.

A consideration of birth and a woman’s choice to assert herself in hierarchies of race, class and prejudice, are at the root of this contemporary dance theatre story that dives deep into one family’s struggle to negotiate mixed heritage and to survive the damaging legacy of apartheid.

Inspired by Caroline’s life story, the 45-minute performance sheds light on stereotypes and difficulties that Deaf Canadians may face. With stunning lighting design by James Proudfoot, the stage is transformed to reveal glimpses of memories that have impacted Caroline’s life.

The performance will also include an animation created by a team of five talented artists from the Vancouver Film School. Brandon Lee Alley and Racheal Prince, both former artists with Ballet BC, are the creators and perform alongside Caroline Hébert.

This dance is based on a creation story by Snuneymuxw author, Celestine Aleck. It tells the story of how the relationship between the Sun and the Moon came to be. It is a story about their love and the arc it paints in the sky. The sunrise, sunset, eclipse – the meetings of these two beings – remind us of the mystery and beauty of love and hope for an evolving world.

KOKORO DANCE Kokoro Dance contemplates transience and imperfection in Wabi-Sabi, a duet choreographed and performed by Kokoro Dance directors, Barbara Bourget, and Jay Hirabayashi to live music performed by an 8-piece ensemble directed by composer Joseph Hirabayashi. Kokoro Dance’s butoh expression gives recurring attention to the seven aesthetic principles of Zen philosophy: kanso — simplicity; fukinsei — asymmetry or irregularity; shibumi — beauty in the understated; shizen — naturalness without pretense;

DAINA ASHBEE Daina Ashbee’s latest work unfolds like a ritual celebration dedicated to the body. In a minimalist landscape driven by cycles of change, five dancers fluctuate between possibilities: from animal to human, mundane to spiritual, from pain and sorrow to ecstasy. Down on all fours, they experience the elation of a new harmony and equilibrium but

soon are flipped upside down, eluding gravity, and portraying a resurgence of the power to act in a community. Born in Nanaimo, BC and of Métis and Dutch heritage, Ashbee has earned international plaudits for her radical and unflinching work which examines the body through a powerful feminist lens.

A deep reflection on multiple artistic, socio-cultural and political realities, All in All is a journey that brings together Lebanese, Mexican and Canadian artists in an ambitious and vibrant work. All in All examines the resonance of bodies through three segments presented simultaneously: “The Ogre, the Phoenix and the Faithful Friend”,

“Boreal Castles” and “Perro de Fuego y Rata de Agua”. All in All is conceived in terms of spaces that encourage the mobility of the spectator, thus encouraging a plurality of views. The work is an invitation to new forms of listening and attention.

Brimming by Company 605 photos by David Cooper

Created and performed by Artistic Co-Director Josh Martin, Brimming is a solo investigating the body as a container: a rigid frame holding in and concealing its stored inner contents. The piece imagines the body as a hollow interior space continuously shaped and reshaped, filled and emptied, and inhabited through different states. A performer trapped inside his own form, the dance is a meeting of both the seen and unseen – the invisible contents that slosh up against the sides, pushing against the outer surface from beneath, and occasionally leaking under its pressure. Brimming explores this shape we are in, how it holds us, and what may eventually spill out when the walls begin to bend.

Senescence March 24 - March 26 @ 6:30pm By donation/Free KW Atrium Studio

Senescence asks the question: what is a good life if one loses the ability to determine that life for themself? Emerging from the experience of caregiving for my father, who had dementia and Parkinson’s disease, the work reflects the metamorphosis that occurs as essential features of one’s selfhood are stripped away; it contemplates the liminality that envelops the end of life. Having developed this piece over a number of years, each time I return to the work a

new attitude reveals itself as my memories of the subject matter condense and expand. A duet between Olivia Shaffer and Alex Mah, in which dance, spoken word, live and electronic music are woven together to contemplate liminal spaces that surround the final stages of life. Senescence (/sɪˈnɛsəns/): the gradual process of deterioration that occurs in the aging mind and body.

TIGER PRINCESS DANCE PROJECTS Weave…part one “Weave…part one” uses a contemporary dance framework to braid my mother’s life (second Sino-Japanese War); adopted into a Peranakan family as a baby, passed on to her Lau Ye at age 7 for convenience then discarded at age 19 on

the death of the patriarch; with some of the situations I lived through and choices I made that crystalized who I became. Central to the solo is a questioning of the role/ value of a woman in Asia – if all this has really changed with the passing of time.

In Search of the Holy Chop Suey Where or in what time space does identity reside? Ng asks “How does someone else’s movement quality impact my own dancing self?” as she undertakes a pointed investigation for her solo, In Search of the Holy Chop Suey. In it, she ponders a life of creation and imitation in movement and mines influences from sources

as varied as her mother, modern dance and kung fu legends, ordinary people, wild animals and more. Says Ng, “When I imitate, I also uncover something unique in myself. Each time I fail to become more like my mother (or my favourite kung fu hero Bruce Lee), I become more me.”
