Located in the Woodward’s Heritage Building in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver on the unceded traditional and ancestral homelands of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations, KW studios are multipurpose production/ performance spaces available for rent to the public with subsidies available to support low-income, non-profit, Indigenous and DTES artists. The spaces consist of a 1,051 sq. ft. dance studio on the main floor, and a 3,802 sq. ft. production studio with attached recording studio, dressing room and servery in the basement. Both spaces feature Harlequin vinyl sprung dance floors, lights and lighting grid, recording / live sound gear, projector and screen, green screen and full surrounding drapery.

WELCOME to the 21st edition of the Vancouver International Dance Festival. We begin by acknowledging that the 2021 VIDF takes place on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples, including the territories of the xʷməθkwəy ̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl í̓ lwətaʔ/ Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, all 2021 VIDF performances will be livestreamed from the KW Production Studio in the months of March, April, May and June, so that we can ensure the safest conditions for presenting the outstanding work of Ne. Sans Opera & Dance, Company 605, Vidya Kotamraju, Yvonne Ng / tiger princess dance projects, CAMP, and Lamondance. Last September and October, we took on the challenge of how to produce the festival while

adhering to the Provincial Health Office’s COVID-19 mitigation policies. We used Kokoro Dance’s 4-camera livestreaming system to broadcast live performances of Kokoro Dance, FakeKnot, and Farouche whose 2020 VIDF shows had to be cancelled when Vancouver’s performance venues were shut down last March. We were surprised and delighted to discover that livestreaming captured the immediacy and excitement of live performance while offering visual perspectives that are impossible to duplicate in a live theatre setting. Livestream performances are edited in the moment with views that put audiences within inches of the dancers or hovering overhead, below, behind, or adjacent to them. No longer are you stuck to a single seat far from the stage. Camera operators become sometimes visible, sometimes invisible, parts of the choreography. Audience

Because of the economic downturn from the COVID-19 mitigation policies, we have decided to make all 2021 livestreaming performances free. REGISTRATION
To reserve your ticket, go to vidf.ca/shows and select the artist whose performance you would like to see. You will be prompted to register for the event. Once you have registered, you will receive a confirmation email. On the day of the performance, you will receive a link for the livestream event. If you need assistance, call our box office at 604·662·4966 or email boxoffice@vidf.ca.
This year, tickets are free, and we encourage you to consider donating if you can. By livestreaming our program, the VIDF is providing opportunities for dance artists to adapt and sustain their practice. For the first time since our beginnings, the VIDF invited dance artists to apply for the 2021 festival through an open call process. Each selected artist has been provided a residency, production support and professional fees to transform their choreography for the camera.
Staff are available to take your calls 9am-12noon and 1pm-6pm Monday to Friday, and 1pm-5pm on Saturdays when livestream performances are taking place.

All performances are streamed online. For an optimal viewing experience, we highly recommend watching the performances seated in a comfortable, dark environment and on a screen larger than a phone. All performances are performed LIVE. There is approximately a 10-15 second delay between the events happening in the studio and on your screens. Dear Friends: I am pleased to extend my warmest greetings to everyone taking part in the 2021 Vancouver International Dance Festival (VIDF). Since 2000, the VIDF has celebrated the diversity of contemporary dance expression, offering dancers from across Canada and around the world a wonderful opportunity to showcase their talent. This year’s performances will be live-streamed and I am certain that audiences watching from home will be inspired by the creativity and artistry on display. It continues to be a difficult time for planning and hosting events. That is why I would like to commend all those associated with the VIDF for their hard work and dedication in ensuring this year’s festival could still take place. A Message from the Mayor On behalf of my colleagues on City Council and the citizens of Vancouver, I want to welcome everyone to the Vancouver International Dance Festival’s 2021 virtual edition. The Vancouver International Dance Festival (VIDF) presents exceptional performances by artists of diverse backgrounds who are focused on the body as the instrument of communication. It provides these artists with essential opportunities for exposure and recognition. Welcome to the 2021 edition and 21st season of the Vancouver International Dance Festival. The performing arts have been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. The necessary health orders that limit our ability to travel and gather are acutely felt with our festivals. The ability for artists to travel and audiences to gather is woven into the soul of an event like VIDF. I applaud the ingenuity of the organizers to mount the festival, remaining true to its mission—to showcase and share the art of culturally diverse contemporary dance—while keeping audiences and performers safe. This year, the festival will livestream performances from March to June. The festival is also working with Canadian dance artists by providing additional supports to make the necessary adaptations to their practice. I want to highlight that the VIDF is building on its tradition of providing programming that is accessible to the entire community. By making all the livestream performances by-donation, the festival is ensuring that as many people as possible can experience the connection and inspiration that dance provides. It also means that VIDF—one of British Columbia’s essential cultural events—will this year be able to share their programming with the world. NE. SANS OPERA & DANCE Established in 2017 by Artistic Director Idan Cohen in Vancouver, Ne. Sans Opera & Dance is re-imagining and reconnecting Opera & Dance. Directing opera through contemporary dance opens a whole new world of collaborative opportunities: an environment that involves working with singers, dancers, musicians, visual
artists, and designers. In just a few years, Ne. Sans has commissioned new creations, offered workshops and classes, and produced local, national, and international events. Ne. Sans cultivates connections with communities by initiating performance opportunities and developing presentational platforms.
It strengthens and widens artistic practices by experimenting and constantly expanding our knowledge of multidisciplinary art forms to forge a natural hybridization of the Arts and create exciting, thought-provoking, artistically challenging art.
Hourglass Hourglass, by Ne. Sans Opera & Dance is set to 4 Piano Études by acclaimed minimalist composer Philip Glass, and features a duet with Racheal Prince and Brandon Lee Alley (Dance// Novella) joined on stage by pianist and celebrated conductor Leslie Dala.

COMPANY 605 Led by artistic co-directors Lisa Mariko Gelley and Josh Martin, Company 605 is an arts organization based in Vancouver, on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded Indigenous territories of the Coast Salish Peoples. Producing various dance projects and performances through shared creative process, the artists place emphasis on rigorous choreographic propositions and movement invention, building physically demanding work that juxtaposes raw with precision, and highlights effort, risk, and interconnection. 605 is an ongoing exchange between separate people, bodies, and ideas, recognizing and celebrating the unique possibilities created in their attempt to co-exist. Valuing collaboration as an essential tool
for new directions in dance, Company 605 continues to awaken a fresh and ever-evolving aesthetic, building a highly athletic art form derived from the human experience. With an expanding repertoire of diverse works, the company has performed from coast to coast in over 30 cities across Canada, as well as touring in the US, Central America, Europe, Asia and Australia. 605’s co-directors have created commissioned works for several dance companies, including Ballet BC (Anthem, 2017). Their collaborations with filmmakers have allowed 605’s work to be shared globally, with short dance films shown at over 45 dance-on-screen festivals around the world.
Brimming Created and performed by Artistic Co-Director Josh Martin, Brimming is a new solo investigating the body as a container: a rigid frame holding in and concealing its stored inner contents. The piece imagines the body as a hollow interior space continuously shaped and reshaped, filled and emptied, and inhabited through different states. A performer trapped inside his own form, the dance is a meeting of both the seen and unseen – the invisible contents that slosh up against the sides, pushing against the outer surface from beneath, and occasionally leaking under its pressure. Brimming explores this shape we are in, how it holds us, and what might eventually spill out when the walls begin to bend.

VIDYA KOTAMRAJU Vidya Kotamraju is a Vancouver based Bharata Natyam dance artist. She is a graduate of the Jai Govinda Dance Academy. Vidya has performed for Mandala Arts and Culture, notably in The Temptation of Buddha and The Monk and The Courtesan. She has also performed for the Dance Centre’s Silk
Route Festival, Wish 150 A Long Way Home Exhibit, PNE’s Spirit of India Festival, Namaste Canada, Diwali in BC (Shyama), DiwaliFest and International Indian Cultural Festival among others. Vidya currently serves on the Boards of New Works and Mandala Arts and Culture.
Longing… Longing... is a two-part performance based on the universal themes of romantic and spiritual yearning for love, companionship and oneness. I. Born and raised in Singapore, of Peranakan Chinese descent, Yvonne Ng, B.F.A., M.A., is the founder, choreographer, presenter, arts educator and artistic director of princess productions (since 1996), which houses tiger princess dance projects (TPDP) and the biennial dance: made in canada/fait au canada Festival (2001). TPDP’s repertoire

includes Yvonne’s works and commissioned works, creating original roles for Bill James, José Navas, Dominique Dumais, Kevin O’Day, MarieJosée Chartier, Robert Glumbek, Stephanie Skura, Deborah Hay, and Tedd Robinson. tiger princess dance projects has toured to Singapore, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Australia, China, Canada and the USA. Yvonne
is a certified Open Source Forms ©, Dance for Dementia (Baycrest NBS Sharing Dance) and Ashtanga Yoga teacher, with training in Partners for Youth Empowerment Creative Facilitator (Level 1& 2), C-I Training TM, Senior Fitness (CCAA), Dance for PDTM (Parkinson’s) and functional anatomy with Irene Dowd. Yvonne is the recipient of the 2017
Muriel Sherrin Award, the 2016 Jacqueline Lemieux Award, K.M. Hunter Artist Award, New Pioneers Arts Award, Chalmers Arts Fellowship, Soulpepper’s Community Artist Award and the Ontario Premier’s Award for Excellence in the Arts – New Talent. In 2000, she received a Dora Mavor Moore Award for best performance and has received multiple nominations.
In Search of Holy Chop Suey
Weave…part one
Where or in what time space does identity reside? Ng asks “How does someone else’s movement quality impact my own dancing self?” as she undertakes a pointed investigation for her solo, In Search of the Holy Chop Suey. In it, she ponders a life of creation and imitation in movement and mines influences from sources as varied as her mother, modern dance, kung fu legends, ordinary people, wild animals and more. Says Ng, “When I imitate, I also uncover something unique in myself. Each time I fail to become more like my mother (or my favourite kung fu hero Bruce Lee), I become more me.”

Weave...part one uses a contemporary dance framework to braid my mother’s life with mine. She was sold and adopted (post World War II) into a Peranakan Chinese family as a baby and at age seven, passed onto her Lau Ye (Grandaunty) for convenience. At age 19, on the death of the adopted patriarch, she was discarded and all association with the family cut. Some of the situations I lived through and choices I had to make in Canada (my immigrant passage to Canada, the rights that I was not afforded as a woman or new immigrant, nor dared voice) have paralleled her experience of being forsaken and these have crystalized who I became and how I have made my life as a sole female immigrant of colour in Canada. Central to the solo is a questioning of the role/value of a woman in Asia and in Canada – if all this has really changed with the passing of time.

CAMP is an artist-run entity that is focused on the collaborative process of art making. Our mandate is to promote dialogue and care between artists throughout each step of the creative process and to make dance in a collective sharing of ideas, while supporting each collaborator’s artistic development, use of voice, and furthering of identity. CAMP has had the opportunity to research through residency programs and generous donors such as: Mascall Dance, The Dance Centre’s 12 Minutes Max, Dance Victoria studios and Vanleena Dance Studios. As artistic collaborators and dance interpreters, we have had the opportunity to work and perform
with incredible dance makers such as: Action at a Distance, Wen Wei Dance, Company 605, FakeKnot, Raven Spirit Dance Company, Kate Franklin, Kinesis Dance Somatheatro, Ne. WANTED CAMP’s new dance work, WANTED, is a fantastical exploration of the light and dark extremes of humanity, told through the lens of the cowboy. In a performance rich with artifice, aesthetic, exaggeration, and comedy, we take a campy dive into themes of systemic evil. Panic, blame, and desperate acts of self-preservation rise to the surface, and in turn, so do escapism and indulgence. We are referencing iconography of the cowboy for its wealth of imagery, a sense of nostalgia, and fantasy. The violence entrenched in the history of the Wild West provides a dynamic backdrop for our characters as they try to negotiate their day to day lives.

The growing athleticism of the movement unravels our humanity in a performative storm of hysterical emotions, cycling through versions of happiness, sadness, and anger with extreme physicality. And increasingly, the storm is broken by moments of selfawareness, where we are forced to reconcile with the sins that are committed in the throes of chaos.

LAMONDANCE North Vancouver-based Lamondance (LMD) is a contemporary dance/training company established to promote and expand contemporary dance vocabulary locally, nationally, and abroad. Founded in 2008, LMD operated under North Vancouver’s RNB Dance and Theatre Arts for ten years. In summer 2019, the company was incorporated as Lamondance Arts
Society and received CRA charitable status. Today, LMD is a strong, contemporary dance voice in the Lower Mainland led by Artistic Director Davi Rodrigues, who brings 30+ years of professional dance experience and more than 18 years as a dance educator, choreographer and director. Under his leadership, LMD offers training and apprenticeship
programs and a season of artistic programming of bold and innovative contemporary dance works. LMD has toured to represent Canada at the International Dance Seminar in Brazil and the TanzArt Festival in Germany (two important international events for contemporary dance). Importantly, alumni of LMD have joined leading dance companies in Brazil, Germany, Austria, and the US.

In loving memory of Larisa Fayad (1976-2007), her friends and family have established the Larisa Fayad Memorial Fund to carry on Larisa’s work and aspirations in the field of lighting design. From this fund, biennial bursaries of $2,500 are awarded to enable the careers of emerging lighting designers.
