A Message from the Mayor

A Message from Premier Christy Clark

As Premier of the Province of British Columbia, I am pleased to welcome everyone to the 2017 Vancouver International Dance Festival.

On behalf of the citizens of Vancouver, and my colleagues on City Council, I want to welcome everyone to the 2017 Vancouver International Dance Festival.

The Vancouver International Dance Festival is a grand showcase of local, national and international dance artists. The Festival is a great opportunity for artists and spectators alike to appreciate a diverse range of artistic expression in this unique presentation. The City of Vancouver has a thriving arts community and I am pleased to congratulate the Vancouver International Dance Festival on providing us with such a stand out event. I would also like to send my appreciation to the organizers, volunteers and performers for all the hard work that goes into the making of such a festival. I am pleased to congratulate the Vancouver International Dance Festival for such an innovative show.

This year’s Festival features the acclaimed Alonzo King LINES Ballet, Dirakudakan and so many more breathtaking presentations that truly demonstrate the exciting spectrum of contemporary dance.

The arts: fundamental to our sense of belonging Art and culture are intrinsic elements of our sense of belonging – to a community, a nation, a country, a society, to humanity itself. With their creative visions, their expressions of hope and their questioning of the status quo, artists play a vital role in helping us to better understand and address the complex challenges of our times. They provoke new ways of thinking and transformations that enrich the lives of their fellow Canadians. The Canada Council for the Arts is proud to support the Vancouver International Dance Festival because for us, art is essential in pointing us, together, toward a brighter future. Simon Brault, O.C., O.Q. Director and CEO

Celebrating its 17th year, the Vancouver International Dance Festival continues to play a pivotal role in developing appreciative audiences for dance in Greater Vancouver and in supporting the artistic excellence of local and touring performers. This highly-engaging festival features both free and ticketed events, workshops and other activities at several downtown venues, adding to the region’s creative vibrancy and economy. Congratulations and thank you to festival organizers and dedicated volunteers for bringing together such a diverse array of talented dancers from across North America and from as far away as Japan and Denmark. With funding made available by the Government of British Columbia, the BC Arts Council is pleased to be able to support this exciting and entertaining celebration of dance.

Message from the Honourable Peter Fassbender Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development On behalf of Premier Christy Clark and the Government of British Columbia, welcome to the 2017 Vancouver International Dance Festival (VIDF). This festival will treat you to a stunning showcase of contemporary dance featuring B.C. performers alongside prominent artists from around the world. Having presented more than 200 dance companies and artists over 16 years, VIDF generates social and economic benefits for our province and brings people like you together to shine an international spotlight on B.C.’s arts, culture and creative industries. Thank you to VIDF, along with the many volunteers, artists and partners, for making this three-week event possible. Your contributions strengthen British Columbia’s creative economy and enhance our province’s global reputation as a great place to live, work and play. Enjoy the performances! Sincerely,

As the Member of Parliament for Vancouver East, it is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the 2017 Vancouver International Dance Festival. Dance—powerful, inspiring, elevating. So, too, the hundreds of performances VIDF has hosted over its rich, accolade-laden seventeen-year history. These technically-challenging, trailblazing performances are praiseworthy in and of themselves. Yet they also connect audiences and artists, putting previously-unknown artists on the global map and fostering a vibrant, ever-blooming artistic community well-regarded as a gem in our fantastic city. To performers and audience members of the 2017 VIDF, please accept my warm wishes for a very successful event. This year, once again, let us all let dance—in all of its exquisite beauty, potency, and elegance—bring us together. Jenny Kwan

YAYOI THE ATRE MOV EMENT OKUNI – MOTHER OF KABUKI OKUNI – Mother of Kabuki is a 70-minute world premiere choreographed and performed by artistic director, Yayoi Hirano. Okuni, born in Izumo, Japan, was a former shrine dancer who started the Kabuki movement in the 1600’s. Okuni created numerous dramatic and elaborate Kabuki (‘avant-garde’ or ‘bizarre’) performances that were heavily influenced by western costume and jewelry. Okuni’s dance movements were initially like those of a shrine dancer (Miko-dance), but then she, in her avant-garde style, incorporated forms like Bugaku and Sarugaku (later called Noh-theatre). In this dance form, women played men in various comedic plays that garnered popularity and influenced other rival dance troupes. In 1615, Okuni mysteriously disappeared. OKUNI – Mother of Kabuki focuses on Okuni’s transformation from using a shrine maiden dance style to performing Bugaku, while gradually taking on elements of Nohtheatre (Sarugaku), and finally Kabuki.

8

The performance begins with street scenes in Kyoto performed to the surreal Sara Davis Buchner piano interpretations of George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. Set designer Shizuka Kai’s hand-painted scenography and video designer Kyle Stooshnov’s projections integrate with Yayoi’s movement to show the hustle of the street life and how people lived and worked in Japan in the 1600’s. Born and raised in Japan, Yayoi Hirano has lived in Vancouver since 2002. She is a graduate of Toho Gakuen College of drama (1972), and in 1975 co-founded Mime Theatre Pierrot-kan to popularize pantomime in Japan through modern works. Over the past 30 years she has continued her study of Japanese dance and movement such as Kagura, Noh, Kyogen, and Kabuki, as well as ballet and modern dance. Her mime studies have been in both Decroux and Lecoq systems.

KINESIS DA NCE SOM ATHE ATRO Presented in association with The Dance Centre and Kinesis Dance Somatheatro

In PENUMBRA Kinesis Dance somatheatro marks its landmark 30th anniversary with the world premiere of In PENUMBRA, as part of the Vancouver International Dance Festival, March 1 – 4, 2017 at 8pm at the Scotiabank Dance Centre. Choreographed by Artistic Director Paras Terezakis, and a continuum of 2015’s U>W, this new multimedia work is inspired by the search for utopia, how the insatiable desire to reach this paradise brings out both the best and

the worst in us, and the penumbra – the grey area between light and darkness – that clouds our quest for enlightenment. The intricate, experimental choreography is executed by a powerhouse ensemble of fearless dancers – Elissa Hanson, Renee Sigouin, Hyoseung Ye, Arash Khakpour, and Diego Romero – who lead audiences through a thrilling multi-sensory landscape of contrasts and contradictions.

SHOSTAKOVICH (Opening Performance) Like an arrow poised for flight, an undercurrent of restless agitation pervades Alonzo King’s latest work set to four Shostakovich string quartets. The music wavers in a state of crystalline suspension, pushing the dancers’ tensile strength to the limit as they revel in the space between harmony and discord, in the long arc before an earthbound fall.

SAND (Closing Performance) Sand is the uncountable aggregation, and yet today grains of sand can be estimated. Sand can halt an engine. A grain of sand can temporarily blind you. It has been used as a metaphor for the passage of time, in hour glasses, and in dance as a listening process in how the body slowly shifts in transitions. There is power in the commonness of its abundance, its vast shapely beauty in dunes, on beaches, the desert, and the bottoms of oceans. Sand is the mineral cousin of water, it can be poured, and the wind can maneuver it into wave-like patterns. Sand is used to polish and

13

shape some of the hardest materials on the planet. You can hold sand by cupping your hands. When you grip it, it escapes through your fingers. Sand is largely composed of quartz crystals. Quartz is primarily made up of silicon dioxide, which has a unique physical property of being piezoelectric, which lends itself for use as a primary foundation of circuit boards, and computer processors. It has often been said that human beings are like tiny pebbles placed together in tight proximity to cause friction until our edges become smooth.

DANCERS PLAYING BASKETBALL We are a group of dance artists who have been gathering to play basketball, in which we have varying degrees of experience. Some of us had never touched a ball before. Deanna played in high school. Our coach Katie Lowen played four years of NCAA at SFU. Katie leads us in weekly ‘schoolings’, teaching us ball handling, driving, passing, spacing, shooting, rebounding and defense. We test our skills in half-court play and incorporate other aspects of the game like rules, plays, hand touching, use of voice and performance psychology. We wrap with some dance-basketball talk, sharing what we’re experiencing and how it relates to our artistic practices. We are not caricaturing or imitating basketball players. We are not a group of dancers playing basketball badly (we hope!). With a genuine desire to

expand our physical range, we are learning new techniques, building community and developing fresh strategies to move, create, improvise and perform. CRUMBLING The human desire to transcend the mundane permeates this work, choreographed by Barbara Bourget for Matthew Romantini. Using imagistic movement, sound and text, Crumbling juxtaposes strength and vulnerability, the meeting of the other-worldly and the senses in the body, and pushes the body’s expressive qualities and

communication with the audience. The piece digs into the creative desire to ascend and the destructive desire to crash – the impulse to destroy even oneself in the service of transformation. Performer: Matthew Romantini Choreographer: Barbara Bourget Music: George Crumb

ABOUT MATTHEW ROMANTINI Matthew Romantini is a multi-faceted professional, working in the fields of Performing Arts (Dance, Theatre and Staging of Orchestral Concerts), Yoga (Therapeutic Yoga, Moksha, Yin, Vinyasa and Hatha), and Voice. He teaches effective communication and voice to Yoga and fitness instructors. He is also a Teaching Assistant at York University and

hosts coaching, workshops and retreats live and online in his fields. These areas all cross-pollinate and he is interested in the intersections between them. Matthew is led by the desire for transformation in his audiences and client base, and bases all his yoga, artistic and educational decisions on that intention.

At the heart of the Company are Karen and Allen Kaeja, who have been creating award-winning performances, site-specific works, acclaimed dance films and educational outreach programs since 1991. PARADISE The otherworldly Japan-based ensemble Dairakudakan returns in celebration of award-winning Choreographer/Artistic Director Akaji Maro’s 45th anniversary with the butoh-theatre company. Maro has advanced butoh considerably through dramatic choreography and theatrics, coupled with a distinct focus on individuality within the group. Here are Maro’s thoughts on Paradise… “When I was thinking about a new work, these words came to my mind: paradise, paratyphoid, paranoia…. It sounded like a disease. When you think about hell, there are a lot of ideas. For example, there is The Divine Comedy by Dante.

In Buddhism, there are eight forms of hell. In real life, hell is killing each other in the battlefield. But, I don’t know much about paradise. We can imagine as much as we want, but I wanted to pursue something more realistic. The origin of word “paradise” is from an old Persian word and it means “enclosed garden.” In a hot desert, a garden would have been paradise. At that time, I think there was an idea that the world was tough and hellish and to contrast that, the idea of paradise must have been created. In Buddhism, hell is called Sukhavati or Western Paradise (Gokurakujodo in Japanese). In our environment, there are a lot of things such as severe cold weather

and typhoons that threaten creatures. Under these circumstances, animals will hibernate and remain still. When humans face something insufferable, we try to work it out. For example, our brain produces endorphins and transforms pain to pleasure. In other words, pain can transform to paradise within our body. Paradise can be called a product of perseverance. How you work around pain and how you seek pleasure can be limitless. People won’t feel the fighting in a war when they are having a good time in an opium den. From the outside, something may look miserable; from the inside, maybe it’s paradise.”

ROB KITSOS/ JA NE OSBORNE / KIM STEV ENSON DEATH AND FLYING What are the objects, gestures or images that resonate a connection to our family? What things do we cherish to feel close to those we love? Inspired by American poet Max Heinegg, this duet looks at things we collect and what we choose to leave behind. Dance artists and long–time collaborators Rob Kitsos, Jane Osborne and Kim Stevenson, with the help of composer Elliot Vaughan, reflect on these ideas through complex puzzles of gesture, recordings, memories and movement.

COMPAGNIE V IRGINIE BRUNELLE TO THE PAIN THAT LINGERS (À LA DOULEUR QUE J’AI) An instinct for beauty? An instinct for pain? In this piece, choreographer Virginie Brunelle raises a toast to raw emotion with bitter poetry that questions the unfinished, the incomplete – what might remain between two people – offering this sustained action frozen in time like a memory, an aching pain. A mark, a link, a point of reference that is both timeless and of a specific time, the piece casts a gaze at the group, the family and the self. In a contemporary society nourished by this dangerous substance, Virginie Brunelle proves that pain can also be an emotional bridge, a source for encounters between the six performers and the audience, an experience that leaves no one unscathed.

29

Virginie Brunelle is an exciting young choreographer at the forefront of the Montreal dance scene. With this new creation, she offers a poetic work that is sometimes romantic, sometimes crude, but always informed by her ongoing investigation of human relations. Here, she explores our connection to each other, a link that can never be truly broken, one that leaves behind traces, residue, a memory. To the pain that lingers is a co-production of the National Arts Centre and The CanDance Network Creation Fund (Agora de la danse, The Banff Centre, Theatre Junction GRAND, Vancouver International Dance Festival), and is supported by the Dance Section of the Canada Council for the Arts.

light breaking broken Peeling back the layers of the unknown, and forging a path to understanding, light breaking broken is the personal journey of two artists reconnecting with language, culture, and identity. With different cultural perspectives and individual histories, Jamieson and Grenier use their distinct dance styles to push each other’s boundaries and find an opening to the light. Through collaborations with Margaret Harris (Elder Advisor), Josh Hite (Video Artist), John Korsrud (Composer), DD Kugler (Dramaturg), Betsy Lomax (Elder Language Carrier), James Proudfoot (Lighting Designer) exploration is extended into intersecting narratives in time and space: broken historical narratives and contemporary connections of hope.

POST NO BILLS Post No Bills is an exploration of the transformative power of crisis. An ‘arte povera’ performance edging its way into the space where composure is irrevocably lost and the new and unknown barely glimpsed: When the stomachache following the collective Western consumerconstipation has receded. When times have become tough. When ships have been wrecked and the ravaging of the systemic crisis has become chronic.

When we can no longer afford to mistake expansion for development. When the choice is either death or change. And when you know the latter won’t happen until you break open the shell, puncture the membrane and scrap the fiction of reality. Right there, we meet the broken and disillusioned human with empty hands. Sent back to square one and free to re-invent the beginning. Post No Bills enters into the series of X-act-produced

solos, which focus on various aspects of the human existence. It explores crisis as a creative transformer. And sets off from the Existential Psychology stance that crisis must lead to criticism and not merely be suffered passively. Meredith Webster (Ballet Master) Meredith Webster grew up in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, studying dance under Jean Wolfmeyer, and received further training at the Harid Conservatory and Pacific Northwest Ballet School. She then worked with Sonia Dawkins and Donald Byrd in Seattle, and earned a BS in Environmental Science from the University of Washington before moving to San Francisco to work with Alonzo King LINES Ballet. In her nine seasons as a dancer with the company, Webster performed and originated many central roles, received a Princess Grace Award, and guested at gala events around the world. In August 2014, she moved into the role of Ballet Master.

Master Class with Takuya Muramatsu and Daiichiro Yuyama Takuya Muramatsu is a principal dancer and choreographer with Dairakudakan since 1994, and head of the Dairakudakan school. Dairakudakan has been guided by Artistic Director Akaji Maro’s butoh concepts including tempu-tenshiki (“being born into the world is a great talent in itself”) and ichinin-ippa (“one dancer, one school”), which stresses the importance of individuals developing unique movement vocabularies. This master class is a rare opportunity to be introduced to the teaching of Japan’s oldest butoh company and a great introduction to their performances at the Vancouver Playhouse on March 10th and 11th. This class is for advanced students.

Feasting on Movement and Momentum Taught by one of Canada’s premiere dancing duos, Karen and Allen thrive on inspired moments, where catching risk in motion and instantaneously responding to a series of impulsive actions guide their dance. The foundation of a warm-up leads workshop participants to the aesthetic of Kaeja Elevations with contact improvisation, where they will practice articulate and sophisticated responses to the point of contact, multi-level movement and the escalation of the opportunities for momentum through the unpredictability of the moment.

Our classes build strength, flexibility, and stamina, as well as developing technical and performance skills. The difference between the two types of classes reflects the different approaches to the same end taken by Barbara and Jay. Barbara’s classes focus on technical training and have a consistent structure from warm-up to movement in space. Jay’s classes are more eclectically varied and include more time for improvisational exploration. The two approaches complement each other and dancers are recommended to take both. Barbara Bourget and Jay Hirabayashi are the Co-producers of the VIDF and the Codirectors of Kokoro Dance. Their teaching is strongly influenced by butoh studies over the last 31 years.

The workshop is comprised of a series of warm-ups, followed by sequences from the company’s repertoire, giving participants the exposure to the techniques developed by the company. To participate, you must be an advanced or professional dancer. Since graduating from university, Virginie Brunelle has firmly established her mark on the contemporary dance scene. Her latest work, To the pain that lingers is a co-production of the National Arts Centre and The CanDance Network Creation Fund (Agora de la danse, The Banff Centre, Theatre Junction GRAND, Vancouver International Dance Festival), and is supported by the Dance Section of the Canada Council for the Arts.

Exploring Creativity Creativity does not only depend on magic moments of inspiration. Creativity also depends on a great deal of plain, patient work, necessary for the unfolding of ideas and their realization. In this workshop we will uncover the individual source of inspiration and explore the path from idea to materialization. Through thematically based improvisation and composition tasks, different choreographic work tools will be introduced. Addressed to students as well as professional dancers, actors and visual artists. Maximum number of participants: 12
