IQey interacive turtle... for 3-6 years olds

"The culture of children is threatened by mass media and overproduction of plastic playthings that are ready-made and demand nothing of the child" (p. 358) Sand, on the other hand, is well-suited to the explorative and imaginative nature of young children. Balke, E. (1997). Play and the Arts: The Importance of the "Unimportant." Childhood Education, 73, (6), 355-360.

Technology touch sensitive screen + laser projection + simple computer + audio device how it works? input : A simple computer is used to analyse and understand the actions of children on its digital touch screen* surface. output : A monocolour laser projector** projects alphabets, pictures, numbers etc. onto the touch covered with ine sand. The audio device acts as a medium of intruction and encouragement.

*Touch Screen Technology: The resistive system consists of a normal glass panel that is covered with a conductive and a resistive metallic layer. These two layers are held apart by spacers, and a scratch-resistant layer is placed on top of the whole setup. An electrical current runs through the two layers while the monitor is operational. When a user touches the screen, the two layers make contact in that exact spot. The change in the electrical ield is noted and the coordinates of the point of contact are calculated by the computer. Once the coordinates are known, a special driver translates the touch into something that the operating system can understand, much as a computer mouse driver translates a mouse's movements into a click or a drag. http://computer.howstuffworks.com/question716.htm **Laser projector: Laser project a beam of light that can be used as a visual chalk line when a reference point is needed. The size of the beam of light depends on the size of the diode. With a wider beam of light, the actual point can be located anywhere within the width of the beam. http://home.howstuffworks.com/laser-level2.htm

One of the features while designing IQey was to make it as interactive as possible. I integrated features like scratching on the sand surface to switch on the turtle and patting the turtle to switch it off. IQey is a fusion of high technology and combined with age old method of childhood games (playing in sand). Its based on the concept of play and learn.

Teaches children: alphabets, numbers, narration of stories, draw pictures etc.

form evolution The turtle was initially conceptualised as a small toy for a single child to play with, either in the backyard or the garden. The major problem with this idea was that the technology for such a toy may make it exclusive and not for all chidren. The toy was then scaled and the concept was placed in the scenario of a play school. This idea worked well. Playschool is an ideal place for a play and learn equipment like “IQey.

form evolution There were a variety of options considered while designing the lid for the turtle. A simple lid that could be lifted and kept aside, void underneath the main body where it could be snap itted when the turtle is in use, textile surface to the inal umbrella structure.

The eyes and the mouth were eliminated in the end.the inal form tries to acheive a symbolic link with the turtle and not be an imitation of it.
