Neigungsgruppe Design, Directors of VIENNA DESIGN WEEK “The programme for this the third year of the festival takes up more space in the folder than ever before. We are pleased that through these years so many patrons, sponsors, and programme partners have remained faithful to us; and many new ones have joined us. However, our focal point has been and remains the designers. In this folder you will find special recommendations from our principal partners. Neigungsgruppe Design and the entire team of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK call on your sporting spirit and time management skills because they would naturally like to warmly recommend each and every event. As an added incentive this year there is also the ‘VIENNA DESIGN WEEK Wanderpass’ (tour book)*: as is commonly done, the design pinnacles that have been reached will be stamped in it and the most industrious hikers will be honoured. Besides such proven highlights as the Passionswege, a series of new formats, such as the VDW Debut, the VDW Laboratory, and the VDW Talks, will offer special appeal. For ten days Vienna will noticeably be ‘a city full of design’. We would be delighted to have you tour the city with us – on foot, with public transportation, or with the Vienna Citybike. Under vdw.cbw.at, the latter offers the daily programme, including the stations optimised for mobile phones for all those making last-minute decisions.” * Available at the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK Information Desk (Laboratory), as well as at selected festival locations.

Artemide Artemide modern classic The “modern classic” exhibition is made up of 18 light fixtures, designed by the most famous Italian designers and architects of the 1960s. As cult objects today, they exemplify the first decade in the history of the manufacturer and most of all, the international success of Italian design. 2 Reception: Fri, 2 October, 17:00, Artemide Showroom On display Brigitte Jank, President of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce: “The Vienna Design Week offers new designers a platform to join forces with companies in Vienna from the traditional branches of the economy. That consolidates Vienna’s position as the hub of the creative industries in Austria and helps to break down natural barriers, such as the often differing language of creative professionals and traditional business people: the Passionswege represent a successful example of this idea. This time the young mischer`traxler pair at the jeweller’s Rozet & Fischmeister will provide unusual sights, and breaded escalope will lend a special flair to the flower shop wildwuchs. The collaboration between the Swiss industrial designer Adrien Rovero and the leather manufacturer Posenanski is also highly promising. I wish you all much enjoyment in your exciting adventure of discovery at the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK.”

mood Sebastian Menschhorn: En suite “En suite” is the time-honoured term for things, in particular furniture, that go together – a set, an ensemble, an interior. The Vienna designer Sebastian Menschhorn (A) has radicalised this form of furnishing in his wonderfully anachronistic, and therefore modern, installation at mood, with a glance back at history and a promise that we won’t be able to believe our eyes. 28 Reception: Sat, 3 October, 10:00–20:00. PASSIONSWEGE On Passionsweg 1 three design interventions in the centre of town will be discovered on foot: the Budapest-based Sausagefence Group (HU) at WOKA Lamps Vienna have been working with a central theme of this manufacturer of primarily historical lamp models – with time. Meanwhile the Prague-based designer Lucie Koldova (CZ) will be presenting her installation at Wilhelm Jungmann & Neffe, the undisputed king of fine woollen fabrics, and has built a functional, contemporary throne for the manager of this traditional, high-quality establishment. Two corners further on, the London-based designer Max Lamb (GB) will be exhibiting his examination of the three disciplines of his host, J. & L. Lobmeyr – glass blowing, cutting, and engraving – in which he demonstrates in an amazing way the “value” of hand craftsmanship. P1 Reception: Thurs, 1 October, from 18:00 Passionswege Passionsweg 2 takes you to the Stuwer Quarter, where the Vienna designer Tina Lehner (A) at the Kürschnermeister Weinberger has turned discarded Persian lamb coats into stuffed animals and security blankets in a poodle look. At the Ledermanufaktur Posenanski it is also rather “beastly”, for the Lausanne-based designer Adrien Rovero (CH) has produced intelligent toys in the forms of animals, making use of a computeroperated cutting machine. Meanwhile, at the flower shop wildwuchs – Der Blumenladen im 2ten, the Vienna-based design team breaded escalope (A) have reinvented city dwellers’ relationship to plants. Instead of soft-serve ice cream, liquid fertilizer and seeds are put into the ice cream cone, in a call for “urban gardening”. P2 Reception: Fri, 2 October, from 18:00 Passionswege On Passionsweg 3 the Vienna industrial designer Adam WehselySwiczinsky (A) with Petz Hornmanufaktur will exhibit the results of his work with the pre-industrial material horn in a post-industrial context, presented in leather at Horn’s Wien. Further on, Meran-based designer Walter Thaler (I) will be occupying himself with the sensory and emotional experiences of the traditional shoemaker’s trade at Rudolf Scheer & Söhne. With growing chains, enlarged jewellery details, and suddenly appearing ornaments, the Vienna-based designer duo mischer’traxler (A) will grant you fresh insights into jewellery at Rozet & Fischmeister Kammerjuweliere. The project of Barcelona-based designer Marei Wollersberger (A) with Wiener Porzellanmanufaktur Augarten is less concerned with the porcelain object than with its cultural context and a vision of production at a manufactory. P3 Reception: Tues, 6 October, from 18:00 Passionswege Norbert Kettner, Director of the Vienna Tourist Board: “The Vienna Design Week is a great asset for Vienna and brings a good deal of fresh wind into a city which above all is famous for its cultural heritage. I am looking forward to the exhibition at Rauminhalt, for instance, where the border area between design and art will be probed, as well as to the project by DANKLHAMPEL on the subject of ‘Housing for the Elderly’, which points up design’s relevance for society. And naturally, because it is related to my work, I am interested in the presentation by POLKA in Hotel Altstadt Vienna. I wish you all an exciting festival!“

Love Design – for the most wonderful hours in life As a cooperative effort between the Paris Design Galerie Slott (Exquise Design) and Design&Art, the exhibition “Love Design” uses numerous objects to delve into the many-facetted relationship between design and strong feelings – from love and sexuality to pain and back again. 20 Brunch and presentation of the book “Love Design”: Sat, 3 October, 11:00–17:00, Klaus Engelhorn Depot On display

Rado’s Surprise Presentation The fascination of light, space, and matter will again be the subject in the Rado Store Vienna, which has created a unique atmosphere with its design as a mirrored cube. It is celebrating its second anniversary this year and with a surprise presentation by an internationally active artist, will underscore its role not only as a sponsor, but also as an integral part of the VIENNA DESIGN WEEK and the world of design. 32 Opening: Thurs, 1 October, 19:00, Rado Store Vienna On display
