EDITOR'S Letter
WHAT'S YOUR ONE WORD? Happy New Year everyone and welcome back to your daily routine. What are your plans for the new year? Do you have a special trip you want to take or something you want to do or accomplish? I’ve been reading about a different approach to the ritual of giving yourself a resolution but instead give yourself a single keyword or one word to use all year that will provide you with a focused action to recall and implement in a purposeful way. For some it might be patience, strength, appreciate, or listen and for others it might be courage, balance, or simplify. The idea is to allow for the word to become meaningful to you all year. There are even online sites to find others who are using the same word. I chose the word ‘stretch’ as my personal keyword for 2020. On a personal level I would like to develop a daily routine of stretching. There are many medical benefits to this on both a physical and mental level. I can apply it to my work too since the Viera Vision magazine is celebrating its 15 year anniversary and we will be producing a new issue every other month. It means stretching our work load a bit but we have so many things changing in Viera it was necessary to expand. We wanted to jump into the new year by showcasing a local model named Everest a.k.a. Evy on our cover. He’s a fun Greydor (Greyhound and Labrador mix) who is smart, playful, and a good listener. Like many rescue pets he has a dramatic back story that includes physical trauma but he persevered through it all and now lives in his forever home with the Brandt family. Ryan, Christine, Sophia and Mathew read his story on the SuntreeViera Pet Rescue Facebook page, adopted him, and now he plays with their other dog Fiona. Evy knows commands from Ryan and during the photo shoot he would lay down, stay in place, and shake hands with his paw. My family also adopted our family pet, Ginger, eight years ago and her back story is a little different but the dramatic change in her day-to-day activities and life, like Evy, is profoundly better. The Viera Company implemented a new Facebook showcase event last year and on Fridays they feature dogs and cats from the Brevard Humane Society with #TVCCares. We still continue to highlight these wonderful animals that need a fur-ever home.
VISIT THE VIERA COMPANY’S FACEBOOK PAGE ON FRIDAYS TO SEE FEATURED DOGS AND CATS FROM THE BREVARD HUMANE SOCIETY WITH #TVCCARES. Here’s to the new year ahead and our team will provide our readers with the same in-depth articles and features as before but will also provide a unique look into some of Viera’s best attributes and stretch in all the right places to make a lasting impact. I wish you a wonderful journey discovering your one word.

HOMELESS PETS
R
OSIE IS A CUDDLE BUG, BUT THE AGING DOG ENDED UP AT BREVARD HUMANE SOCIETY AND FOR WEEKS PROSPECTIVE NEW PARENTS PASSED HER BY. FORTUNATELY, THE FOLKS AT THE HUMANE SOCIETY’S COCOA SHELTER WERE THERE TO SHOWER HER WITH AFFECTION UNTIL ROSIE FOUND A NEW HOME. When it comes to homeless pets, Brevard has a very big and soft spot for unfortunate animals cast off often through no fault of their own. The Brevard Humane Society, the SPCA of Brevard and the Brevard County Sheriff ’s Office South Animal Care Center, together with a score of rescue
4
groups, take thousands of creatures great and small under their wing. For years, the staff and volunteers involved with these humane organizations have given generously of themselves to better the lives of the county’s animals. It worked. When the Brevard County Sheriff ’s Office assumed responsibility for Animal Services in 2014, the live release rate for Brevard County had averaged 55 percent a year, which meant that almost half of all animals entering the shelter had to be euthanized, primarily because no homes could be found for them. With the help of the Sheriff ’s Animal Services, rescue groups and volunteers, for the third year in a row Brevard is now a No-Kill community.
BREVARD HUMANE SOCIETY
Founded in 1952, the matriarch of local humane groups is the Brevard Humane Society, the Space Coast’s oldest established animal welfare organization. A “no-kill for space” shelter, the Humane Society not only provides love and care for abandoned animals until a “furever” home can be found for them, but the group also educates the community on responsible pet ownership and the humane treatment of animals and advocates for spaying/neutering to reduce the homeless pet population. In October, the Humane Society celebrated the 10th anniversary of its low-cost spay/neuter and wellness clinic adjacent to the Cocoa Adoption Center at 1020 Cox Rd. Curbing pet overpopulation is critical in reducing the number of homeless animals. “To date, over 18,480 dogs and cats in our community have been spayed/neutered as a result of our Clinic,” said Humane Society executive director Theresa Clifton. “Had each of those animals been allowed to breed throughout their lifetime, they were capable of producing well over seven million offspring that could have been homeless and unwanted.” To fund these services, humane groups become extremely creative in fundraising. In November, the fun was on tap at the Port, when the Brevard Humane Society, together with Carroll Distributing, hosted “Paws & Pints,” a 90’s-themed, and of course, pet-friendly event where 100 percent of proceeds directly benefited Humane Society programs.
DOLLY'S DREAM
The Humane Society also participates in the Dolly’s Dream Adoption Program, named after a special pit bull rescued by the president of the Levitetz Family Foundation, and a dog that dispelled all myths about the breed. Dolly’s Dream strives to give “square heads” like Dolly a second chance and to counter the unfortunate stereotypes that haunt these animals. Through the Foundation’s support, they provide microchipping, collar, leash, heartworm protection, crate, bowls and obedience training free for families who adopt pit bulls from them.
VOLUNTEERS
Caring for hundreds of animals every day 24/7 is not easy and could not be accomplished without a large corps of volunteers. Volunteers from all corners of the county annually give approximately 40,000 hours of service to the Humane Society alone. They walk the dogs to keep them from getting cabin fever, they play with the kittens, they help with adoption events. They even welcome the animals into their homes.
FOSTER CARE PROGRAM
Last year, the Brevard Humane Society saved nearly 1,000 animals through its Foster Care Program, which matches foster pet parents with animals that need temporary care. Some may be itty bitty orphaned kittens, while others may be large adult dogs who could greatly benefit from some quality home time. These volunteers open their hearts and homes to animals in need to prepare them for adoption and prevent the shelter from becoming overcrowded.

“OUR BORROWED BUDDIES PROGRAM ALLOWS AN INDIVIDUAL TO BE A HERO AND A FRIEND TO A DOG IN NEED OF A HOME, EVEN IF JUST FOR A FEW HOURS.” SUSAN NAYLOR, PUBLIC RELATIONS DIRECTOR FOR THE SPCA
SPCA OF BREVARD
Like the Brevard Humane Society, the SPCA of Brevard is in the business of saving animals and achieves this goal through the combined efforts of staff and an army of volunteers. In August, the Titusville-based organization celebrated 40 years of protecting and providing a voice to homeless animals. More than 2,600 previously unwanted animals find new homes every year thanks to the SPCA, the first no-kill shelter in Brevard and the first local adoption facility with free-roaming cat rooms that allow adopters interaction with the animals in a home-like setting. Around the clock every day of the year, the organization cares for between 400 to 600 animals at a time. The SPCA of Brevard Clinic also provides reducedprice vaccines to the public and has performed more than 65,000 low-cost spay/neuter surgeries since 1999. 6
Some critters spend only a couple of days at the shelter before finding a new home, but others, like Dots, a retriever mix, are not so fortunate. “Dots spent his entire life in one shelter or another, over 800 days,” said Susan Naylor, public relations director for the SPCA. Shelter staff could not understand why someone had not snapped up this shelter favorite, for his manners were impeccable, but they were prepared to shower love and care upon the three-year-old pup for the rest of his life. As it happened, Dots eventually struck gold. “Dots is now living the best life ever,” said Naylor. “His adopter recently moved with him to Las Vegas and I'm friends with her on social media. Their road trip to their new home was epic and he goes for hikes and adventures several days a week.”
BORROWED BUDDIES
With the start of a new decade, the SPCA’s Borrowed Buddies program makes for a great New Year’s resolution to let more love into your life. “What better way than to help shelter dogs out by giving them a break from the kennels for the day?” said Naylor. “Our Borrowed Buddies program allows an individual to be a hero and a friend to a dog in need of a home, even if just for a few hours.” Individuals---and businesses---can take a dog out for the day to either enjoy an adventure around Brevard or just spend quality time at home or in the office. The SPCA also organizes a fostering program around the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. “People can take a dog or a cat home to spend the holiday with their family,” explained Naylor. “We provide food, crates, everything. All they provide is the love. It lets people who might not otherwise be ready for an animal full-time to get time with a pet. They are welcome to adopt the pets they foster, but it is certainly not required.”
ANIMAL FRIENDS OF BREVARD
In addition to the major shelters, many good-hearted individuals dedicate themselves to helping a variety of animals in need, from parrots to horses. To keep the current U.S. population of approximately 40,000 wild horses in check, the Bureau of Land Management routinely organizes roundups and adoptions of the wild horses. It is not unusual for the animals to end up abused. “Caring for a wild horse is drastically different than caring for a tame one, and this often leads to mistreatment of wild mustangs in captivity,” said Diane Delano, founder of the Wild Horse Rescue Center in Mims. Delano’s nonprofit saves the creatures and rehabilitates them. If possible, the Rescue Center matches the horses with new and knowledgeable owners. If the animal is unadoptable, the Center will care for it through its lifetime. At the other end of the county in Malabar, parrots like Rosie the Moluccan cockatoo are under the care of Angel Wings Parrot Rescue, which rescues birds that have been mistreated or neglected. Whatever their stories, creatures in need, whether a home awaits them or not, have plenty of good friends in Brevard County.

CANINE COMMANDOS
Started in 2003, Canine Commandos was born to help homeless pets at our shelters. Today, 28 schools, 400 students teach basic commands to shelter dogs increasing adoptions by changing their behaviors. The Commandos read to the dogs and socialize cats too. "Not only do the animals benefit, but so do our children as they are learning compassion and empathy while helping shelter pets find their new families," says Virginia Hamilton, President and Founder of Canine Commandos. Since 2003, the Commandos have helped find 69% of all the dogs they've trained, approximately 2500. All the schools come together and celebrate each May with an Expo where the kids showcase reflective projects raising community awareness of the importance of pet responsibility and spay and neuter. The Canine Commandos have won several awards with the latest for Virginia Hamilton Quest Elementary's Gifted Student Teacher, a national community service award with the National Association for Gifted Students and is a subject of an upcoming documentary with Animal Magic Films from California. Canine Commandos is a non profit organization and more information can be found at www.CanineCommandos.org.

Building Education FROM THE Ground Up
W
E’LL ADMIT IT. IT CAN SOMETIMES BE DIFFICULT TO KEEP UP WITH ALL THE CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS GROWING OUT OF THE VIERA TURF THESE DAYS. ROAD PROJECTS, OFFICE SPACES, RETAIL AND RESTAURANT SPACES ARE ALL GROWING THROUGHOUT THE OLD DUDA RANCH PROPERTY TO SUPPORT THE ONGOING RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT OF ONE OF THE TOP 25 MASTER PLANNED COMMUNITIES IN THE COUNTRY. But there’s something new and interesting going on behind the blue scrim along Breslay Dr., Stadium Parkway, and Judge Fran Jamieson Way. Something especially exciting, not just to the Viera Charter School community, but fans of athletics, education and this larger, growing community. When the project is completed in advance of the 2020/21 school year, the blue fencing will come down to reveal a spectacular new two-story 43,000 square foot, building that will include a 10,000 square-foot multipurpose gymnasium inside and outside, a running track and a soccer field. “Everybody’s really excited,” said Robert Jordan, the school’s board chair and president. “We streamed the groundbreaking ceremony live to all the students in their classrooms. We wanted everyone to participate.” BREAKING GROUND The ceremony itself took place on November 7th with
10
board members and other local dignitaries in attendance, the first golden shovels digging into the site and Jordan himself, moving the “first dirt” with a backhoe on the site. “Dr. C (Principal Julie Cady) got a great group of kids out representing the school at the groundbreaking,” Jordan said. The new building expands the capacity of the school by an additional 500 students for an overall expected enrollment of more than 1,000. For his part, Jordan says they are actually targeting a capacity of 1,600 kids before long. “My vision has always been that the school needs to be as open as possible and a true part of the community,” Jordan said, describing the challenge of operating a school with an extensive waiting list for new students. “It always bothered me. I always wanted everyone who wanted to come to be able to come.” The 4.6 acre expansion site expands the campus footprint significantly and will offer amenities to the expanded school community from a new lunch room to state-of-the-art classrooms, to the multi-purpose gymnasium designed for everything from basketball to theatrical events. The folding bleachers will feature the school’s panther logo when closed. Jordan said The Viera Company has been integral to the effort having moved some 30,000 cubic yards of dirt for its ongoing operations to the school property for the project.
CHARTER SCHOOL STRUCTURE A charter school is one that receives government funding but operates and is managed outside the traditional public school system. They tend to straddle the gray area between private and public schools and have, as a result, had a mixed reputation in educational circles over the years. The Viera Charter School has maintained a strong reputation among the county’s schools since its founding with a focus on STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). Jordan is quick to point out, though, that the STEM approach has been expanded significantly to STEAM including Arts education as a priority. Jordan points to the school’s management company as a tool to keep the school operating properly so the board can focus on education rather than profit. “You’ll never see a tail wagging this dog,” Jordan, whose mother was a public school teacher in Georgia, said. “Governance (of the school) is about education, not profit. The education of these children comes first.” SUCCESS FROM THE START Jordan has been involved with Viera Charter School since it was founded and opened in 2013. Expectations among the founders when the first meeting about the school was scheduled were modest, he said. “We were only expecting a few families to come to that first informational meeting,” Jordan said. “It ended up being standing room only and we needed to call the Sheriff ’s Department to help with parking and traffic.” They handled 1,200 applications for admission that first year and admitted 650 children. The school was given an A grade in its first year and, according to Jordan, operates at 5-10% less funding than traditional public schools. In the second year, the school added 20,000 additional square feet and expanded enrollment to 850 students. The board worked through a bonding project to purchase the school building and property in 2017 after determining they would see a multi-million dollar savings in comparison to their previous lease agreement. “Fast forward two years,” Jordan said, “the discussion at the board level was this is a business. We need to continue to look at how to expand the school and attract both students and teachers with the things they need and want.”
And that, Jordan says, was the impetus for the current expansion project. While Jordan’s background is as an engineer having spent 32 years working on the Space Shuttle program, he was elected to two terms on the Brevard County School Board and that experience is what eventually drew him to the Viera Charter School family. Along with Jordan, the Charter School board is currently Treasurer Kim Africano, Vice Chairman and Founding Member Robert Naberhaus, Founding Member Scott Steele, and School Liaison Steve Muzzy. The school serves a kindergarten to 8th grade population and Viera Charter School students who continue in the public school system go on to attend Viera High School across Stadium Parkway. As the expansion project grows, designed by local architecture firm RZK, Inc. and build by Rush Construction Company, an impressive education edifice is added to the Viera and central Brevard County community. One designed to meet the needs of Viera’s residents and make us all proud.

NEW VIERA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL FASTTRACKED FOR NEXT SCHOOL YEAR Construction on the new, still as of yet unnamed Viera Elementary School is well under way and you can keep track of everything that’s new from interviews with the new principal to aerial drone footage of the project on the school’s Facebook page. Facebook.com/newbpselementary2020/ Targeting what is being called a fast-tracked opening for the 2020/21 school year, the 125,000 square foot, single story facility features 54 classrooms with a design layout nearly identical to that of Manatee Elementary and Quest Elementary schools. The exterior landscape is expected to have a xeriscape approach rather than traditional landscaping and follow the district’s state-of-the art security protocols. Adrienne Schwab, currently serving as principal of Meadowlane Intermediate School, was announced as principal of the new Viera area school this fall. Schwab has been a part of the Brevard Public Schools since coming on as a teacher at Locker Elementary in 2002. She’s been principal at Meadowlane since 2015. “I had a vision, dream and goal of opening a new school as a principal in the future,” Schwab said upon her announcement. “I am looking forward to working collaboratively with all stakeholders and the community to create a standard of excellence for today’s modern classroom that focuses on student engagement, innovative instruction and learning for all.” A product of Brevard Public Schools herself, Schwab holds a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from the University of Central Florida and a master’s degree in Educational Leadership from the American College of Education. The new school has not yet been named, but is being built on a site west of I-95 and south of the current Quest Elementary school and will help the district serve the needs of the growing Viera community. 12

RAINFOREST REVEALED M
IMICKING THE NATURAL ECOSYSTEMS OF THE AMAZON RAINFOREST, THE BREVARD ZOOS’ NEWEST PROJECT, RAINFOREST REVEALED, GRAPHICALLY DEMONSTRATES THE INTERCONNECTEDNESS AND INTERDEPENDENCE OF THE ANIMALS AND AMPHIBIANS WHO NOW SHARE SPACE THERE. The $4.4 million dollar transformation that debuted last fall boasts animal habitats and exhibits embedded within a lush tropical landscape with a Flooded Forest, a new aquarium and otter exhibit where some of the most exotic creatures on Earth now live. “Our goal has always been to make the experience better, not bigger,” said Keith Winsten, Executive Director. “Better for our guests, our animals, and better for achieving our many missions, Rainforest Revealed achieves all of this.” The project is the culmination of four years of planning and fundraising efforts from a capital campaign, community donations, and ongoing support from the Brevard Tourist Development Council.
14
SKY TRAIL SYSTEM
One of the most notable additions, the “sky trail system,” a complex network of overhead tunnels, provides passages for jaguars, spider monkeys and other arboreal animals to travel to and from different habitats. “Animal wellness has always been extremely important to us,” said Andrea Hill, Marketing Director. “This new habitat provides our animals with the choice to decide where to spend their day and with what animals. For instance, our spider monkeys now have three different habitats in which to use each day and soon our Giant anteater will be able to leave his current habitat and go into our Flooded Forest where cabybaras and dozens of different bird species also live and vice versa. We also are offering to our guests new opportunities to see animals from a different perspective. The elevator allows all guests, not just handicap visitors the chance to see some animals from above.”
COGNITION CENTER
The Brevard Zoo now joins a handful of zoos that are on the forefront of cognitive research involving animals. Nearing completion in the Rainforest Revealed loop is the cognitive testing area, a designated venue where the spider monkeys can enter and participate in research tasks such as playing on a touch screen computer. Florida Institute of Technology Psychology Professor, Darby Proctor, Ph.D., whose input helped shape the concept for the sky trails, said she is excited about the renovation and the opportunity to continue to do research here. Visitors will be able to watch the animals in motion and engage in a question and answer session with Proctor and her students.
“Monkeys live in a fission-fusion social structure, in groups, but split into sub-groups and are apart for days or weeks in the wild. We will be able to witness this behavior now because of the sky trail passages. The Brevard Zoo, as far as I am aware, is the only zoo in our nation that houses monkeys in this way,” said Proctor. “As silly as this sounds, computerized testing tells us a lot about how animals think,” she added. “It is special for me to be able to educate visitors about what we are doing. The Brevard Zoo is now in an elite group with other top ranked zoos thanks to this new transformation.”
15
VENOM HOUSE
Not to be missed, the “Venom House,” now home to a variety of exotic snakes, will allow spectators to be immersed into a world of often misunderstood creatures. Constructed of special safety glass to provide protection for visitors, the display showcases baron racers, emerald tree boas, indigo blacks, and elegant but dangerous eyelash vipers. More than a dozen Golfodulcean poison dart frogs are also a part of this new exhibit, all new to the zoo.
“OUR GOAL HAS ALWAYS BEEN TO MAKE THE EXPERIENCE BETTER, NOT BIGGER. BETTER FOR OUR GUESTS, OUR ANIMALS, AND BETTER FOR ACHIEVING OUR MANY MISSIONS, RAINFOREST REVEALED ACHIEVES ALL OF THIS.” KEITH WINSTEN, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR FOR BREVARD ZOO
16
FLOODED FOREST
Deemed the climax of the Rainforest Revealed transformation, the Flooded Forest highlights the importance of water to ecosystems from the Amazon to our own Indian River Lagoon. Freshwater stingrays, dwarf caimans (small relatives of crocodiles) and gigantic Arapaima fish share aquatic space in a 5,300-gallon aquarium tank, complete with 26 horizontal feet of underwater visuals. Just arrived from the L.A. Zoo Botanical Gardens, Felix and Ophelia, two three- and five-year-old Giant River otters, also make their home in this section of the exhibit. They can be viewed either swimming behind the glass aquarium or undulating around the open deck area in the jungle-like setting. The species are known to grow up to six feet long and are extremely vocal at times. Across from the aquarium, a 4000 sq. ft. aviary houses free-flying macaws, Roseate spoonbills and Orinoco geese. Two of the largest residents now residing at Rainforest Revealed are Mia and Antonio, Baird’s tapirs. The herbivorous mammals, relatives to horses and rhinoceros and similar in shape to pigs, are endangered species native to Central and South America. According to Winsten, the Rainforest Revealed project is a significant accomplishment for the Space Coast and the state because it will continue to build on our community’s unique mixture of innovation, technology and quality of life tied to our natural assets and resources here. “We are looking to keep our zoo among the forefront of AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquariums) institutions by providing experiences that connect visitors with nature and conservation.”

Florida Tech and Eastern Florida State College A physicist walks into a bar…
A
CCORDING TO LOCAL LORE, IN 1958, THE SAME YEAR NASA WAS LAUNCHED, CAPE CANAVERAL PHYSICIST DR. JEROME KEUPER WAS SHOOTING THE BREEZE WITH A FRIEND AT A PUB. THE STORY GOES THAT KEUPER EXPRESSED A DESIRE TO CREATE A SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY. A FELLOW PATRON OVERHEARD THE CONVERSATION, PUSHED 37 CENTS ACROSS THE BAR AND SAID, “THERE’S YOUR FIRST DONATION, JERRY. NOW GO AND BUILD THAT COLLEGE.” Keuper took up the challenge, and those 37 cents went very, very far. What started as a night school for the missile men of the space program evolved into today’s Florida Institute of Technology, a university that is no stranger to the highest grades for its campus, faculty, student body and its more than 200 bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degree programs. Those few pennies created a school that firmly cemented Brevard County’s place at the top of the class among communities with leading institutions of higher learning. Research-driven, high-tech and hands-on, Florida Tech is a place where students don’t just learn. They also do.
18
Florida Tech was ranked among the best national universities in the country, according to U.S. News & World Report, based on undergraduate and graduate opportunities and faculty research. The Wall Street Journal/ Times Higher Education College Rankings placed the Melbourne school among the top 50 universities in the Southern United States. The Princeton Review recognizes it as one of the top colleges in the Southeast. World University Rankings placed the school among the top five percent of 18,000 degree-granting institutions of higher education worldwide. This year, Florida Tech was once again named one of the top national universities, in an elite list that included institutions such as Harvard University, for its diversity, since international students comprise 28 percent of this year’s class. “International students can add diversity to a college or university, enriching the experience of other students on campus,” wrote U.S. News & World Report. Florida Tech is one of just 17 universities nationwide, including MIT, Georgia Tech and Caltech, named to Fiske Guide to College’s Top Technical Institutes for engineering. Editor Edward Fiske describes the school as “high-flying and innovative” for its challenging academic

climate, appealing campus, strong diversity and majors that prepare students for the real-world success. The guide also notes that, given Florida Tech’s location near Kennedy Space Center and the ocean, “it comes as no surprise that some of the most cutting-edge work in space and water-related sciences happens here.” Thirteen years ago, Dr. Eric Perlman left his position at the University of Maryland to join the faculty at Florida Tech. The Viera resident never looked back. “We are the engine for the workforce of tomorrow.” said Perlman, professor in the Department of Aerospace, Physics and Space Sciences. “We train both engineers and scientists.” Florida Tech’s bricks-and-mortar campus in Melbourne is only part of the story, for the university reaches globally through online classes. Satellite locations include the Florida Tech Spaceport Education Center just outside Kennedy Space Center, where graduate students in Brevard can easily continue their education and enhance their careers. Florida Tech’s online school offers the opportunity for students worldwide to advance their education in a variety of fields, from aviation management to cybersecurity. U.S. News & World Report rated the online school as the best in both undergraduate and graduate programs. WeVENTURE, part of Florida Tech’s Nathan Bisk College of Business, offers a wide range of programs that enhance the local economy through the growth of small businesses. In 2020, Florida Tech again reaches for the stars when it breaks ground in the spring on a 61,000-square-foot, $18-million Health Sciences Research center to help fill the growing demand for jobs in biomedical engineering and science. “Our success in producing highly desirable graduates make this evolution on our campus and in our educational offerings a natural, powerful step forward,” said Florida Tech president Dwayne McCay.
Another modest beginning
Two years after Jerome Keuper was parlaying 37 cents into a school, Brevard acquired its second seat of higher education, Brevard Junior College, which in 2013 became Eastern Florida State College with the addition of fouryear bachelors degrees. The school started as modestly as Keuper’s Florida Tech, with a handful of students meeting at the old Cocoa High School, now long since demolished. Also established in 1960 was Carver Junior College, a post-secondary institution focusing on providing educational opportunities to local African-American residents. The two schools merged in 1963 and the new school moved to its present main campus on 87 acres adjacent to Clear Lake in Cocoa. Fast forward to 2019, when more than 15,000 students attend one of the college’s four campuses or pursue degrees through the school’s online presence. Recognized as one of the country’s leading state colleges, EFSC enjoys a partnership with the University of Central Florida that
includes the EFSC/UCF Joint-Use Library, one of the top advanced learning resource centers in the nation. Under the director of Dr. James Richey, the state school has blossomed rapidly in recent years. In 2013, 60 new programs were added. “It’s an unprecedented number,” said John Glisch, associate vice president of communications. To keep up with this growth, the school invested $20 million for the Public Safety Institute in 2015 and another $20 million in 2017 for the Health Sciences Institute complexes, both in Melbourne. Next summer, the college will break ground for the first residence hall in its history, also in Melbourne. In Cocoa, the Advanced Manufacturing Center was completed in 2016. The Palm Bay campus is understandably proud of the Fire Training Center, opened in 2016. “It’s one of the best in the state,” said Glisch. EFSC has strong partnerships with area businesses to provide specialized training for both high-end technology and soft skills. In November of 2019, EFSC won the prestigious Chancellor’s Award for an apprenticeship program that helps aerospace companies and other high-tech firms gain skilled employees. The college earned the recognition for its key role in the formation of the Space Coast Consortium Apprenticeship Program. Under the two-year program, students attend EFSC classes two days a week and work three days a week at participating companies. “The honor reflects our commitment to working closely with industry to train students to launch the next generation of spaceflight and spur the growth of other high-tech and other advanced manufacturing companies,” said Richey. The program is similar to the highly successful apprenticeship EFSC already enjoys with Lockheed Martin and ASRC Federal at Kennedy Space Center, where students apprentice to help build NASA’s Orion spacecraft for human exploration of deep space. Thirty-four of the 36 students in the program were hired by Lockheed Martin.
“THE HONOR REFLECTS OUR COMMITMENT TO WORKING CLOSELY WITH INDUSTRY TO TRAIN STUDENTS TO LAUNCH THE NEXT GENERATION OF SPACEFLIGHT AND SPUR THE GROWTH OF OTHER HIGH-TECH AND OTHER ADVANCED MANUFACTURING COMPANIES.” DR. JAMES RICHEY, PRESIDENT OF EASTERN FLORIDA STATE COLLEGE 21
Brevard County is also home to satellite campuses of the University of Central Florida, Keiser University, Barry University and Webster University, and is within commuting distance of the Orlando campuses of UCF and of Full Sail University, which focuses on degree programs in media, the arts and technology. With so many outstanding educational institutions dedicated to teaching and research so easily accessible in the Space Coast, anyone, whatever their age and background, can reach for the stars and become a leader in the discipline that fuels their dream.

Viera Builds on Luxury Offerings with New Acura Dealership There will be another luxury automobile available in Viera this spring. Construction on Brevard County’s first Acura dealership broke ground on Bromley Dr. in October and is expected to open for business in mid-April this year. Acura is something of a bellwether brand. It was created as Honda’s luxury vehicle brand in 1986. It was so successful that fellow Japanese auto manufacturers Toyota and Nissan launched their own luxury brands, Lexus and Infinity, soon thereafter. Acura of Melbourne General Manager Jim Crockett describes the new 20,000 square foot facility as a state of the art, stand-alone showroom, sales and service center 24
offering everything from full-service to financing. “The demographics are just right,” Crockett said of the Viera location that will open next to the Lexus of Melbourne dealership. Both dealerships are owned by T. R. Page. “We’re going to provide one-stop shopping for the luxury auto market.” The dealership is forecast to sell about 100 cars every month and employ a team of up to about 40 people by the time it opens in mid-April. Keep track of the latest updates on the dealership’s Facebook page as the project makes progress toward opening day. Facebook.com/acuraofmelbourne/

Prestige Cardiology Makes Move to Viera
Medicine is big business in Brevard County. From big hospital groups to single physician practices and specialists, there are services to match every patient need, and Dr. Hany Gurgis of Prestige Cardiology Consultants is just one of the newest moving into the Viera community. Soon to be relocated to 1765 Berglund Lane near Viera Blvd. and Murrell Rd., Dr. Gurgis’ practice focuses on personalized care designed for patients in need of cardiac care right away as well as patients taking a preventative approach to their health.
“We created a practice that we believe in,” said Dr. Gurgis of his team’s efforts. “One that we could choose for our own family members.” Board Certified in six specialties including Internal Medicine, General Cardiology, and Interventional Cardiology, Dr. Gurgis was also recognized as attending physician and teacher of the year at Marshall University School of Medicine two years in a row. As a specialist practice, Prestige Cardiology accepts most public and private insurance plans and has a pricing schedule for cash-paying patients. A graduate of Cairo University Medical School in Egypt, intern at Marshall University School of Medicine, and fellow at University of Connecticut in Hartford Hospital, Dr. Gurgis has practiced in Brevard County for some time but will become, as Prestige Cardiology Consultants, a member of the Viera community in the early part of 2020.

Coming Soon From the moment the construction fencing went up, there was a buzz about what was Coming Soon! to the property between Publix and Chase Bank at Stadium Corners. It would be a week or two before the familiar and iconic green mermaid sign went up to great enthusiasm throughout the community. Yes, it is a Starbucks and it will be opening to bring its unique coffee experience on the western side of Viera this month. While it is true there are already two Starbucks locations in the area, one on Wickham Rd. in front of Walmart, and one inside the Target across the street, this puts a brand new and familiar coffee cafe right near the high school, Stadium, and Government Center. There is an old New Yorker cartoon making fun of the ubiquity of the coffee chain that shows six stores on two floors of a shopping mall. Five of them have Starbucks in them. The sixth has a sign, “Coming Soon, Starbucks.” And while that is, indeed, a joke, the enthusiasm for a new and conveniently located coffee hub offering everything from cappuccinos to lattes to Pike Roast and cake pops in the neighborhood is not to be ignored. Neighbors in the area have been watching the swift progress on the building with anticipation of the grand opening. Happy New Year, Viera coffee lovers.

When the diverging diamond interchange opened on Viera Blvd. and I-95 in 2019, reaction was mixed. It was a completely new way of moving traffic for most residents and what might come from it was still a matter of speculation to all but a few “in the know.” But over the past few months, the eastern side of I-95 has become a hub of development activity with all sorts of new building, new businesses, and soon, new restaurants, including a Texas Roadhouse, going up along Viera Blvd. near Star Rush Dr. A national casual dining chain headquartered in Louisville, KY, Texas Roadhouse caters to the meat and potatoes crowd and specializes in steaks of all cuts and sizes with a western flair. What they call “hand-cut steaks and ribs” are the cornerstone of the menu for this familyfriendly operation. They also list an extensive menu of cocktails, chicken, burgers, and kids’ favorites. The new restaurant, opening early in 2020, will be a featured business in an area of Viera that is newly thriving since completion of the highway interchange. This is a section of town that will surely attract residents and visitors alike, for dinner, shopping and other activities making our community hum.

fireworks show like no other started the annual parade, filling the night sky with bursts of gold and silver with red and green color sprays to herald in the season. Thousands lined the streets after visiting the on-site food trucks to see the professionally-lit floats, marching bands and walking units share their holiday joy as they laughed and smiled and waved to the crowds. The theme, Making Christmas Memories, was taken literally as the acrobatic performers, a first for the parade, provided unique entertainment using motion and lights. DEVELEOPER Letter
A
TODD POKRYWA, PRESIDENT
S I REFLECT BACK ON 2019, STRATEGIC INVESTMENTS HAVE BEEN MADE IN IMPROVING AND EXPANDING THE COMMUNITY’S SUPPORTING INFRASTRUCTURE. THESE IMPROVEMENTS FACILITATE THE PLANNED DEVELOPMENT OF FUTURE RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBORHOODS AND COMMERCIAL OPPORTUNITIES THAT WILL ENHANCE OUR QUALITY OF LIFE AS WE EMBARK ON 2020. It was a significant year for key improvements in the development of the community with the opening of the new Viera Boulevard Interchange, widening of Viera Boulevard eastward from Herons Landing to US 1, and commencement of construction activity preparing for the new segment of Lake Andrew Drive which will extend from Viera Boulevard southward to its existing terminus behind Viera High School. This will all set the stage for a mixed use area in the southeast quadrant of Stadium Parkway and Viera Boulevard that will be called Borrows West. The Viera Company remains focused on mobility improvements like those near Borrows West to create better and more accessible options to connect neighborhoods with destinations thus easing the ability of residents and visitors to navigate their way throughout Viera.
A ribbon cutting was held on December 18, 2019 for the new Addison Village Club which opened in early January and now serves many of the eligible Addison Village residents south of Wickham Road and approved license holders. This spectacular amenity center provides a wide array of recreational and social opportunities for its members. The Viera Town Center continues to grow with construction of the Hilton Home2Suites which is well underway immediately north of the Fairfield Inn & Suites and The Pearl of Viera luxury multifamily community recently started site work on the property west of the new hotel. This planned density coming to fruition in the heart of Viera will make the forthcoming central gathering area in the Viera Town Center the success it has long been envisioned to be as we focus on lifestyle offerings that can cater to all Viera residents. Many exciting attractions are coming to Viera in 2020 including a new Acura dealership under construction south of Lexus, a Starbucks nearing completion at Viera Boulevard and Stadium Parkway, a Texas Roadhouse restaurant being developed south of Viera Boulevard, east of I-95, and the expansion of Viera Charter School near Stadium Parkway and Judge Fran Jamieson Way. In addition, there will be a new elementary school, charter school and more residential neighborhoods opening south of Wickham Road. As we look out the windshield with a new year full of promise in front of us, it is important to share with our residents and business owners that The Viera Company takes the long term view as we deliberately plan and develop each element within this nationally recognized master planned community. It is important to the Duda family and the team at The Viera Company to get these elements right and create value as the community continues to grow during 2020 and beyond. Best wishes for a happy, healthy and successful New Year Viera!
"THE VIERA COMPANY REMAINS FOCUSED ON MOBILITY IMPROVEMENTS LIKE THOSE NEAR BORROWS WEST TO CREATE BETTER AND MORE ACCESSIBLE OPTIONS TO CONNECT NEIGHBORHOODS WITH DESTINATIONS THUS EASING THE ABILITY OF RESIDENTS AND VISITORS TO NAVIGATE THEIR WAY THROUGHOUT VIERA." 40
