RICHARD TWOSE Ethereal yet edgy, Richard Twose’s paintings elicit a quiet stillness through their subtle use of colour and composition. Mysterious figures, spatial distortion and unusual perspectives all combine to create his fascinating scenes. Richard was runner up in the BP Portrait Award 2014, adding further demand for portrait commissions and exhibition work. We are proud to continue to regularly show new work at View, both in our exhibitions and at art fairs. Twose has a talent for seeing beneath our complexities to unveil the hidden personality of his subjects. With hints to mythology and symbols, we the viewer, ultimately want to know more.

BETH CARTER From London to New York, Beth Carter’s sculptures and drawings have been making personal connections with a growing fan base. The conflicting emotions evoked by the artist’s imagined characters resonate with every viewer in an individual way. With power there is vulnerability, in fear there is tenderness, in sadness there is beauty. We are taken on an emotional journey of discovery as we uncover the identities and characters of this evocative artwork. We may be taken back to childhood stories, dreams and nightmares, or memories that lie between truth and imagination. Beth Carter’s art is aesthetically beautiful and at the same time can be uncomfortable as it probes the hidden layers of our thoughts and experiences.
Only a selection of Beth’s work will be on show at the art fair. For the full catalogue of the new work, please visit our website.

KRISTIAN FLETCHER At View, we have witnessed the upward trajectory of the highly-skilled artist Kristian Fletcher and have also admired the latest metamorphosis of his work, as a result of his time spent on a residency in Dumfries. He has been deeply influenced by colour and shape of the Scottish landscape. This new work is concerned with the diverse nature of structures and public spaces that are in a state of flux or a state of change. For the panoramic viewings, Kristian still uses powerful and well defined drawing traces. However, the element of colour has become equally relevant. The result are works that combine realism with a sense of mysticism and atmosphere. We believe there will be more recognition to come, building on the two Jerwood Drawing Prizes and the purchase for Prince Charle’s royal collection.

LEANNE STEPHENS Leanne paints landscapes that hover between the abstract and the representational. Her work explores visual qualities and devices that question the categories and traditions of landscape painting. Central to her practice is the use of scale, light colour and form. These act as a means of celebrating and romanticising the natural landscape. Each painting, usually oil on board, has two to three layers of paint, which are constructed out of block colours that sit upon or adjacent to each other. The unpredictability of varnish interacting with paint, creates ‘planned accidents’ in the mark making, opening new possibilities and potentials in the paintings. The application of paint is also an important part of the process; once applied, it is manipulated to form the ambiguous representation of landscape, through smearing, dragging and removal.

SAM HUSTON Emerging artist Sam Huston experiments with the idea of ‘desire’ by using familiar imagery to investigate its importance. Creating a portal for the viewer to escape to and admire, he encourages a changeable emotional state. Using imagery of figures and the landscape Huston creates a new space that explores our thoughts and desires. Achieving this by layering subjects that merge together, he allows a translucent depth to delve into. Using his artistic instinct to piece together the images, information is withheld to encourage obscurity. The paintings reflect our sudden excitement of desire, yet control it to an acceptance, mirroring reality. Whilst exploring this theme, Huston tests our understanding of space and structure, destabilising our safety, leading to alternative interpretation. “I strive to entertain the eye and spark intrigue, stirring understanding of scale, subject and form”

MATTHEW SMALL Matthew Small is a passionate believer in social inclusion and that, given the opportunities to be heard and respected, all individuals have something of value to contribute to society. As an artist he wants to change the negative preconceptions of the people he feels are misunderstood. His work is an expression of his worldview: by painting young marginalised figures of society he allows the viewer to spend time with these people in the hope that a shared a sense of humanity, unrestricted by class and social boundaries, will arise. Matthew’s artwork is a product of the urban environment. Collecting discarded obsolete objects he reappropriates these found materials into his portraits creating industrious sculptural constructions and canvases for his paintings. These materials become integral in contributing to the ethos within his work.
