ADELE UNDERWOOD Adele seeks meaning in her painting, her conclusions are never forced but evolve. Her latest body of work expresses coming to terms with burgeoning sexuality. The animal masks, or hidden realness of the subjects, cover their faces because of the difficulty of revealing the imbalance or awakenings to sexuality.

SHARON BISHOP Sharon Bishop’s work relates to the city and the issues of environmental damage due to constant property development and the loss of habitat to wildlife. The imagery revolves around the urban landscape, where animals sit alongside the continuous construction of the city-scape. Sharon produces drawings, prints and mixed media works. Showing an multi-disciplinary approach to image making by Incorporating elements of drawing, print-making, photography and painting in order to create layers of marks.

CEDRIC LAQUIEZE French born Cedric Laquieze has been fascinated with creatures from a very early age. Whilst at the Rietveld Academy he began specialising in using all kinds of dead objects, from animal and bird skeletons, to dead insects and plants. Cedric has created a beautiful exquisite series of hybrid fairy warrior’s amalgamated from these materials.

DIGGY With a graphic blend and expressive raw lines, Diggy Smerdon, brings to life the characters and creations of dream and sub-conscious. With this distinct style, she explores unconventional subject matters with weird but wonderful forms. Her quirky creations, unique faces and obsession with hands, add’s a mystery to her work. She conveys the idea of identity through her work, including our sub-conscious, instinct and our soul.

JOHN SIMPSON Referencing the world of folk tale and myth, John’s work explores the relationship between the human figure and animal forms. Often introducing contemporary elements to these subjects, John Simpson’s imagery is at once both unnerving and enchanting. John Simpson’s primary medium is the Monotype, a process recognised as the most direct and painterly form of Printmaking. Using drawing and painting in oil based ink, layers of image are combined on the paper to create the finished work. These layers are created by working the tar like ink on a glass surface or by drawing on the reverse of the paper while placed on a smooth inked plate. John Simpson has exhibited in London, New York and Brazil. He has shown alongside modern masters such as Hockney and Warhol and his work is held in the collections of Carharrt, Basel and Galleria Choque Cultural, Sao Paulo.

LOUIS MASAI MICHEL All artwork in this collection is a part of the series ‘A tale of unfortunate sins’ Every member of the characters depicted in the series has committed murder. The murder of an animal often referred to as hunted or slaughtered has occurred. Some of these deaths have caused the species to confront extinction. This series documents a curse that has been bound to the photographed culprits. The curse leaves the human with an animal’s head showing the world what animal he or she killed. The curse is life long and depending on the extent of damage the kill has caused will have impact upon the cursed. It is not unknown for the curse to spread through the family and even onto unborn children. Life becomes extended much like a vampire and results in a long torturers existence only terminable by the species that was hunted in the first place. Possession of one of these paintings however holds no bad omen and in fact binds an agreement of respect between human and animal. The hanging of a painting in the series “A tale of unfortunate sins” redeems the character in the painting thus allowing them to be at peace with nature…

TOM MEAD Tom Mead admires the surreal and otherworldly sides of art. He is a traditional artist working in pen and ink mediums, often applying his practice to large scale character based pieces on reclaimed wood. Tom has a terror and intrigue for animals dressed as humans. He creates inhuman characters blending the animal, human and mechanic, a super species he nicknames ‘Bio-Mechanical Anthropomorphism’.
