FRAN WILLIAMS - 2012 Collection This collection sees all the strength of attributes that have made Fran one of our most collected artists, whilst adding some new features that bring more drama and aesthetic quality. Evocative figures remain at the core of Fran’s painting as they appear from the depth of her paintings. Vivid tones and texture almost mask the face and body of her subject (usually herself). New colours of natural oranges and blues have been introduced to the palette, adding a vibrancy that is in wonderful contrast to the vulnerability of the portraiture. The titles have always been a strong indicator of the passion and personal feelings that have inspired the work, now complimented by ocassional text in the painting that adds to the mystique. These are images that you can see through and discover a strong emotional connection with - whether it be through observation, memory, or imagination, there is a personal story to be told.

The remainder of the text in this catalogue are the words of the artist.

OUTLINES OF A BEAUTIFUL FUTURE oil/mixed media on canvas 120 x 90 cm

My paintings develop through methods of mark making and in this collection even more so... applying paint, working and distressing it and then ‘reading’ the feeling it’s created. I start all of my paintings doing what you might call an abstract painting. I take inspiration from photos I take of sky, sea, worn surfaces, even the back of a roasting tray! I create textures and surfaces that I layer up and work into until I feel the painting almost vibrates with a life and energy of its own.

I’m in the studio every day, no matter how little time... some days it’s just looking at the work, feeling it, reading it. The most precious thing to me is momentum and flow...when this is uninterrupted I get a dialogue going with my work that is impossible to explain in words, but it’s a feeling I can’t get from anywhere else and it’s vital to create work of any real substance.

I’ve really let the paint speak with this collection and brought all of the techniques I like to use together with quite an intense colour palette in some pieces. The colours I’ve used have come about through really trying to feel which colours speak to me most whilst painting and then just letting them sing. Thinking about what colours I’m/we’re drawn to,particularly orange and blue,I think perhaps its an instinctive association with the sky and sea? They seem to sit together so well regardless of how bright one or the other is,which is quite unusual for bright colours.

I spend ages working out titles. For me they are the illumination of a painting... the magic dust. It’s a thought you can hear and I love the warmth they bring to a painting. I write all of the time whilst I’m painting... I love quotes and powerful words that pack so much about life into a small sentence. I nearly always write on my canvasses throughout the process, it just seems right...so many thoughts and questions running through our minds at any one time... I feel that by doing this it builds up energy in a painting, even when most of the text is unreadable as it gets painted over! A visual thought, as well as aesthetically beautiful. I write whatever comes into my head or how the painting is making me feel... I like the fact that its often unreadable... it fades out just like many of the thoughts we have or feelings we see on the faces of other people.

I nearly always use myself as a model, not that the work is ‘my story’ - I see it as an exploration of the human experience, I try not to personalise it too much. It’s me and it’s everyone I’ve ever known. When I view a painting (not one of mine) and it really speaks to me I find that in some way I see myself represented in the painting... however abstract that link may be. As soon as a painting I’ve created leaves me and gets seen by someone else it becomes their interpretation - whatever that may be. I get what I need from the painting process whether it be emotional, physical or spiritual...as soon as someone else makes a connection to it, the other half of the story belongs to them and I love this...the creation continues.
