CARLY ASHDOWN SHERROD BARNES-GINIFER DAMIAN DALY JAMES HOLDSWORTH LOUSI MASIS MICHEL PARESH NRSHINGA TIM PAVIER JAMES TEBBUTT RICHARD TWOSE
CARLY ASHDOWN Expressive, dynamic and vibrant, Carly Ashdown’s paintings are a celebration of life. Drawing upon the deeply felt but unnameable experience of being alive, Carly uses paint and other media to create a myriad of emotions which echo the human experience. Explorations of how we come to understand ourselves, the world around us, and particularly the idea of personal transformation all act as inspiration behind her work. Carly is particularly fascinated by the illusory quality paint offers, “after all it’s just paint, or ‘matter’, yet working with it opens doorways to a new paradigm.” She aims for her work to invite viewers to, step into and experience beyond, what we are accustomed to in our everyday lives.

SHERROD BARNES-GINIFER The subject of much of Sherrod’s work is the challenge in life to love and feel free simultaneously. Seeking escape from constraints, she therefore creates figures that move, dance, fly and fall through space. Her work also hints at a more sinister concept. The emphasis placed on these overt displays of thrill seeking and risk taking can also be seen as a temptation to death. We all want freedom and fun, but can this pursuit of selfish desire also lead to destruction?

DAMIAN DALY Inspired by a wide range of influences, from memories and his subconscious to sci-fi and comic books, Damain’s imagination is captivating. Having nothing but a vague theme in mind before he begins each image, the resulting drawings always retain an element of fantasy through the mysticism that they emit. The beauty behind the art is how it inspires viewer participation. The detailed layers of narrative mean that the audience are on a continuous journey of discovery, constantly able to unearth new elements and points of intrigue.

JAMES HOLDSWORTH Controlled chaos, humour and horror are all merged in James Holdsworth’s extraordinary paintings. Seemingly playful on first appearance, James paints to visually express his understanding about existence in the 21st century and references to the past. His work aims to examine society’s lusts and desire with fortune and fame and, consequentially, to highlight our insecurities. Recognisable figures from all walks of life are typically paired with iconographic cartoon characters. Through this, James seeks to expose the dark reality behind the glossy facade. The cartoons act as a representation of a consumer-laden dream world behind which lies layers of a more brutal reality.

PARESH NRSHINGA Exotic and vibrant; Paresh Nrshinga’s abstract art displays a unique amalgamation of spirituality and mysticism. By adopting a “not thinking but feeling” ethos towards his art, he employs his subconscious to create an energetic mix of emotion and movement within his paintings. Enriched in vibrant colours, both bold and rare, we can see evidence of extensive travelling throughout Africa, India and Europe influencing the vivacious palette. Through utilising the striking blends found in the eastern colours of dress, pigment and lush spices, he reflects his love of nature and culture.

TIM PAVIER Tim’s subject matter deals predominantly with human perception and how unseen concepts such as sound and motion can be perceived. Tim’s creative practice begins by taking photographs in motion, causing his subjects to appear “jaggedly and rapidly twisting.” By using photographs as a reference to paint, he drains the captured motion from the camera onto the work surface and then fits the image to reach the archetype of motion in his mind. This distortion of his fascinating figures and scenes create unusual shapes and expressions, which are simultaneously unnerving and intriguing.

JAMES TEBBUTT James’ work demonstrates his ongoing exploration of the medium of paint. Varying styles of paint application – the drip the splatter, the expressionistically painted, the flat, the cartoon like, the smooth, the rough, all created with different types of paint, jostle for position on the finished canvas. The imagery used is drawn from a wide variety of sources, including magazines, the internet, photographs, news media, and art historical. This reflects not only his own wide ranging interests but also the wide range of visual stimulus in the world around him. It is these images, their relationship with each other and their relationship with the more abstract, expressionist, paint marks that interests him.

RICHARD TWOSE Ethereal yet edgy, Richard Twose’s paintings elicit a quiet stillness through their subtle use of colour and composition. Mysterious figures, spatial distortion and unusual perspectives all combine to create his fascinating scenes. Twose has a talent for seeing beneath our complexities to unveil the hidden personality of his subjects. With hints to mythology and symbols, we the viewer, ultimately want to know more.
