view from the MAYOR

Message from the Mayor Fall is an exciting time in Mesquite. The long summer heat is starting to dissipate, snowbirds are returning, business is picking up, and more people are out and about. It’s also an exciting time for athletic events in our city, not only for our local teams, but the many thousands of visitors and participants that come to Mesquite. September starts out a bit slow, but speeds up considerably with the NISA Native American World Series September 19th- 21st; for more information see the article in this issue. This first fall major sports event is huge for Mesquite. We anticipate 5000 visitors and 1200 participants for this exciting baseball event. Of course, during this same time frame we have our annual RE/ MAX World Long Drive Championship golf event at the Mesquite Sports and Event Complex. This event brings approximately 2000 visitors and 400 participants to Mesquite in September.

In October the temperature cools down, but Mesquite heats up with numerous athletic events. For the first time we are hosting the Para Long Drive. This is a must see event that brings together many great athletes from all over the world. Many athletes are missing limbs or are wheelchair confined; however It does not slow them down a bit. They are superstars! Again this year, Mesquite will host the Southern Utah/Nevada Youth Football League, on October 4th with an estimated 1000 visitors and 600 participants, and October 11th with an estimated 5000 visitors and over 1200 participants. Mesquite residents and businesses need to get out and support all of our sporting events. We need to make each and every visitor feel welcome. Our hotels, eating establishments and merchants have the opportunity to

promote their businesses. I would like to see signs in every business window welcoming our visitors, banners flying and greetings from our residents, welcoming these guests to our fine city. – Mayor Al Litman

The Mesquite Chamber of Commerce 9th Annual Golf Tournament was a huge success. The day began with 144 players lining up for a 7am Shotgun Scramble and then off to enjoy the beautiful and challenging Wolf Creek Golf Club. The Terrace Restaurant provided lunch while awards were presented to the first, second and third place winning teams, as well as closest to the hole and longest drive. The top three contestants in the Putting Contest then competed for a $5,000 prize, sponsored by Farmer’s Insurance - Bill Mitchell Agency. A raffle followed where many lucky winners took home gifts that were generously donated by local businesses. It was a near perfect day. We would like to thank the players and Wolf Creek Golf Club for exceeding expectations at this year’s tournament. The sponsors, volunteers, and media coverage made the 9th Annual Mesquite Chamber Golf Tournament a great event. Here’s to making next year just as fun!

e f i L r o f y t i r e t x e DDexterity for Life By lINdA fAAs dek’-ster-et-ee: readiness and grace in physical activity, mental skill and quickness The need for dexterity doesn’t end when one leaves the sports field or golf course. Every human wants and needs physical and mental skills until their last breath. Exercise of the hands and body is important, and so is exercise of the mind and heart. Two Mesquite women lead very committed efforts to support personal dexterity for an enthusiastic group of people who are pleased to have their help. Diana Coonradt and Mariann Jenkins, being of the age to be labeled “seniors,” have organized weekly arts and craft sessions for residents who live at Highland Manor Assisted Living Residence. These women are lifelong artists who know what art and creativity has meant in their own lives. Both are members of Virgin Valley Artists Association (VVAA), the local artists organization that has operated this art class, called “Stay Smart with Art,” for almost eight years. VVAA and the Nevada Arts Council have shared the costs of the program, while Highland Manor has opened its facility and staff time to support this critical

rehabilitation program for the residents who wish to participate. All are passionate about lending their skills to the residents who, for one reason or another, have come to need support from others to maintain their physical skills and mental acuity. Almost every Wednesday, Diana and Mariann arrive at Highland Manor with paints, brushes and baskets of supplies for the week’s art project. Carrie Gomez and other Highland Manor staff members bring the resident students to the activities room, where all are anxious to see what is in store for the day. For 90 minutes everybody is an artist. The participants perform at the top of their game. At the end of the class, the project is finished. Whether it is a painting of a favorite flower, making a whimsical snowman from a stuffed cotton sock, or a colorful paper craft made for a loved one who will be coming to visit, the art stirs the heart and brings a smile. Other volunteers who offer their help through Highland Manor or VVAA become as committed to the senior art program as Diana, Mariann and Carrie. Everybody understands that what they do for others brings dexterity to both their students and themselves. Dexterity is a grace that results from doing what you love, for people you love.

Stretch Your Golf Game By Weston Welch, ISSA Certified Personal Trainer You can better your game of golf. . . How? By stretching! Golf is a sport and with any sport it’s always a good idea to prepare the body by warming up and stretching before you tee off and after you sink that last putt.

without jerking or bouncing are important. The slower you stretch the more control you have. This in turn allows you to fully extend your muscles making them become more flexible.

Not only can warming up and stretching your body help with your game, but it will reduce the chance of being injured. Before you tee up, take a five minute walk, run or jog. Get your blood moving as this helps warm your muscles and gets oxygen rich blood moving through your body to loosen your muscles which in turn reduces the chance of tearing or spraining a muscle. When stretching your muscles before you golf you should target your quadriceps, shoulder and abdominal muscles. Stretch for 30 seconds to one minute per muscle, or muscle group. Slow movements

Visit ANYTIME FITNESS and enroll in my golf stretching class on Tuesday mornings at 11 AM. Setting a path to an improved game, you can also call to register at ANYTIME FITNESS (702) 346-3121 or Weston Welch (702) 445-0364. The golf stretching class is Silver Sneakers eligible.

Last year’s festival was such a success that the second Mesquite ‘Best of Fest’ Film Festival will kick-off on Tuesday, September 9th, at Redd Hills Cinema. This year’s film festival will be bigger and better than last year, having expanded to four nights and showing twelve feature films and nine short films. Ernie Hoffman, Manager at Redd Hills Cinema, has graciously donated the entire theater for the festival, so films can be shown at multiple times on multiple screens, allowing festival goers to see as many films as they would like. Opening night will include a cocktail and appetizer reception, meet and greet festival introduction, and the premier of a film that will be of special interest to area residents. The film is entitled ‘My Father’s Highway’, and is the story of the construction of the most expensive section of Interstate highway in the United States……..the I-15 stretch running through the Virgin River Gorge! Yes, the road was actually finished long ago, and the recent repair and reconstruction was anticipated nearly 50 years ago when the road was first completed.

A festival program is available at the Eureka Casino and at Redd Hills Cinema. The program describes each of the films and indicates show times. The program is also available online at www.eurekacommunityinitiative.com. Please remember that 100% of all sales will benefit the ‘Mesquite Reads’ program! The summer reading program completed its first session and was a successful collaboration between the Eureka Community Initiative, the Virgin Valley Elementary School and Mesquite businesses, charitable organizations and residents. If you have not attended a film festival, this is a great opportunity to have a true ‘film festival experience’, see interesting films and discuss them with interesting people! If you attended last year, bring some friends and enhance your experience this year. The ‘Audience Choice Award’ films will be determined by you, the festival goer, through a ballot system. The winning films will be shown on Friday evening, and recognized at the VIP Festival Wrap Party. Your input is appreciated!

The ‘Best of Fest’ is associated with Dixie State University’s DocUtah film festival. DocUtah will be held September 2nd thru 6th in St. George, Utah. Please visit www.docutah. com for more information about the film festival activities in St. George. As the name implies, Mesquite’s “Best of Fest” will screen some of the best films from DocUtah. Selecting films for the festival requires a lot of time, patience and knowledge, and fortunately, twenty-four Mesquite residents volunteered to review and evaluate films. The ‘screeners’ worked diligently viewing films as well as driving back and forth to St. George to pick up new films. According to the DocUtah staff, the Mesquite screeners went ‘above and beyond’, and we certainly appreciate their efforts.

I would like to send out a special “Thank you!” to the local residents that had a hand in selecting films for the festival. Team Leaders: Mariann Estes, Michele Burkett, Linda Rich, Jacqueline Komaschka and Kathie Chatlin. Team members: Winni Bormans, Linda Faas, David Calmelat, Mark Guertin, Judith Hetem, Sherry Calmelat, Sherry Howie, Norma Sachar, Tom Rich, Bill Howie, Barb King, Gerri Chasko, Lorraine Bellaro, Nancy Ballou, Michael Keister, Marianne Johnstone, Wanda Eckhardt, Alisha Rossell and Eve Mikutowicz.

Ticket prices for the festival are as follows: Individual Tickets, $5 per film and can be purchased at Redd Hills Cinema. ‘Festival Pass’, good for all films, available for $40 A ‘Patron Pass’, good for all films AND the VIP Festival Wrap party, available for $50. Wolf Creek the World’s Ultimate Golf Experience If there’s a recipe for the ultimate golf experience, Wolf Creek Golf Course in Mesquite, Nevada has discovered it. Wolf Creek combines equal parts, breathtaking views and challenging (but not impossible) holes. It mixes in some of the Southwest’s most rugged desert terrain, then to balance that out, it adds in 6,939 yards of some of the most beautifully kept fairways and greens a golfer will be lucky enough to land a ball on. Then, to finish it all off, a 19th hole called The Terrace Restaurant that takes golf course cuisine to the next level.

Since Wolf Creek opened in 2000 that recipe has made it a yearly staple on the “Best Of” lists of just about every golf publication in the world. The year it opened it was voted Golf Digest’s “America’s Best New Course,” and since then it has kept raking in the accolades. “Top 100 Courses You Can Play,” Golf Digest’s “Fan’s Choice 2011,” “Top 100 Greatest Public Courses,” “Best Resort Courses,” and “Ten of the Best Places in the World to Play Golf”. After being featured in Tiger Woods PGA Golf video game from EA Sports, Wolf Creek has been on many more golfers’ must play lists. But to really get what Wolf Creek is all about, it must be experienced, not just read about in the pages of a golf magazine. Out on the course, Wolf Creek feels less like a golf course rather than an 18-hole roller coaster that just happens to wind its way through a wild and rugged southern Nevada desert. Many of the tee boxes are perched 100 feet above the greens, providing 360-degree views of the surrounding desert. On the fairways and greens, the desert landscape takes a backseat to the luxurious fairways and expert manicured greens that look like they were transplanted from the lush green hills of Kentucky and plopped down in the desert. It is this environment that makes a round at Wolf Creek unlike a round at any other course in Nevada – or the world, for that matter. Despite the challenging nature, it is fun for golfers of any ability. After a round is over, golfers can look forward to rehashing their experience over cocktails and Southwest-inspired cuisine at The Terrace Restaurant. For players who have always wanted a shot to play this epic course, Wolf Creek is offering a $200 Unlimited Golf Special that will be good for two consecutive days. This special is available September 18th – September 30th, 2014 or November 23rd – December 30th, 2014 (Sunday through Thursday only). Wolf Creek’s seasoned sales team and staff can help golfers arrange play and stay packages with the recently renovated Eureka Casino Resort for guests visiting the Mesquite area.

As Mesquite’s only Troon managed facility, Conestoga Golf Club provides one of the premier golf experiences in the area. The team you will encounter at Conestoga is truly passionate about your experience at our facility and relish every opportunity to show you why this club was named “Best New Course” by Golfweek and Links magazines when it opened, and remains a top Five course in the state of Nevada every year. This 18 hole scenic masterpiece is artfully interwoven with the character and contours of Sun City Mesquite’s spectacular landforms. Undulating through canyons with gently ascending and descending elevations, rugged rock outcroppings and tranquil water elements, the integrity of the land is preserved at every opportunity. The masterful design and creativity of famed golf course designer, Gary Panks, provides this championship course the appearance of being crafted by nature forged over time.

Conestoga’s pristine fairways are complemented by the natural terrain, with drastic drops in elevation and numerous bunkers throughout its 18 holes. The front nine are among the most picturesque and remarkable of the course. Hole 2 offers the first of several striking par 3 holes. At 188 yards, the second hole plays off a high bluff to a green set hard against a wash, some 70 feet below. Hole 4, a 394-yard par 4, features a split fairway with an invisible drop off to a landing area below. “Bombers will try to blast it down to the fairway below, covering 260 to 270 yards. The

bomber’s reward is a second shot to the green of only 100 to 120 yards.” said Panks. Hole 6 offers the first par 5 of the course at 540 yards. The “Three ditch bitch” as noted by locals was described by Panks as “an awesome piece of real estate for a golf hole,” Panks continues, “There are three separate fairway segments with a total of four bridged wash crossings. The terrain is rugged, with the well bunkered green resting at the base of the mountain.” As you head toward the back nine, Holes 9 and 10 offer the only water hazard on the course. Hole 9, a par 5, 590-yarder plays downhill to a green that is protected by a large beach-bunker on one side, and a lake on the other. Hole 15 tee is elevated more than 60 feet. Panks notes “This dogleg right will play much shorter than advertised, adding, the green is large, but miss and you’ll find yourself in a bunker left, or down a slope on the right.” The finishing hole on 18, a 470yard par 4, drops 34 feet from tee to green, making it play shorter than the yardage indicates. Panks mentions that a birdie/ bogey scenario is in the cards here, which could turn a match around.

The final feather in the cap at Conestoga is the 1880 Grille. The neighborhood environment is as welcoming as a trip to your grandmother’s house. That is of course if your grandmother had amazing food, multiple huge flat screen HD TVs, ice cold draft beers and signature cocktails. The 1880 Grille features a daily happy hour, signature menu items, and droves of smiling faces. Whether you play a round of golf or not, make sure you pencil in a trip to the 1880 Grille and see what the fuss is all about.

A Simple Plan

for Maintaining Health

By Nikk Zorbas “No man has the right to be an amateur in the matter of physical training. It is a shame for a man to grow old without seeing the beauty and strength of which his body is capable.” ~ Socrates There’s no doubt that keeping fit has its benefits. By taking care of your body, you will live a longer, more productive life. You’ll have more energy, improved mental health and increased self-confidence. Your body will be less susceptible to disease, which will reduce your health care costs. You will look and feel better, and will even enjoy a better sex life. Perhaps most importantly, you will be there for the people who love you and need you— your partner, children, grandchildren, and aging parents.

That said, today’s sedentary lifestyle makes it harder than ever to keep fit. The fact is, we’re spending more time on our butts than ever before. Whether in front of the computer, reading, watching television, playing games, or at work... there’s a whole lot of sitting going on. And that is not good news.

16

Consider a study conducted by the American Cancer Society. Researchers tracked 123,000 healthy women and men over a 13-year period and recorded their activity levels and death rates. The results were astounding, especially for women. It was found that men who spent more than 6 hours a day sitting were 18% more likely to die than those who sat fewer than three hours per day. However, women who reported sitting more than six hours a day were found to be 40% more likely to die during the time period studied than women who spent less than three hours sitting.

As a result, it’s never been more important to start and maintain a fitness regimen. The human body is the most intricate mechanism on earth, even more so than the space shuttle. Yet despite its complexity, maintaining your body’s health is a relatively simple process. Regardless of what we’ve been taught, keeping ourselves healthy and fit doesn’t have to be a complicated or time consuming process. In fact, it’s much more difficult, time consuming, and costly to live with a body that’s not functioning properly.

minute. Look into the many phone apps that allow you to gage your steps.

There’s absolutely no excuse for not maintaining some type of fitness program. Fitness is available to anyone regardless of budget or age, because it’s FREE. Being a former natural bodybuilding champion, I always look for ways to make my quest for fitness effective, simple and of course, fun. Here are some of my tips and strategies to get you started. These will work whether you have a tight schedule, travel a lot, would like to exercise at home and save time and money, or if you are just getting started with a fitness plan.

Give yoga a try. Despite its amazing benefits for your mind, body and soul; only 5% of Americans practice yoga. Yoga can be performed just about anywhere, and at your own pace. Invest in an instructional DVD or check out some free yoga videos on YouTube. Take an introductory class through a community center, gym, or yoga studio.

Walk. Walking can have amazing benefits and can be done just about anywhere. I do a 20-minute walk on the treadmill first thing in the morning, and I can tell it improves my mood and clarity throughout the day. Integrate as much walking as possible into your daily routine. Leave your car at home when doing errands, or choose a parking spot at the far end of the lot. Walk with a brisk pace, similar to if you were running late to a meeting. A walking pace of about three to four miles per hour corresponds to 120 to 135 steps per

Work your midsection. Here’s a little trick you can do while standing or sitting; blow out all the air from your body while simultaneously sucking in your tummy. Hold and tighten your tummy for about three seconds before breathing back in, repeat. This exercise can have as much an effect as doing sit-ups, and you can do it anytime, anywhere, and as often as you would like, and no one will ever know!

view on HEALTHY LIFESTYLE Trade a hamburger for grilled chicken. Remember, while exercising is a big step, its effect will be minimized if you don’t eat healthy. You must combine exercise and proper nutrition for effective results. I understand that every day we’re bombarded with thousands of “healthy” products from companies with clever, and perhaps deceiving, marketing tactics. As a result, we’re left overwhelmed and confused instead of educated. We see infomercials that promise weight loss with magic pills and crazy workouts, and advertisements for plastic surgeons who claim they can simply suck the fat out of us. All entice us with a “quick fix” that will almost never be beneficial in the long-term.

Turn your chores into a workout. Pump up your energy and burn lots of calories as you’re vacuuming, doing laundry, changing linens, dusting, and washing floors. Make it fun by adding some background music. Be creative and wash your car to the song “Car Wash.” Eat consciously and practice “trading.” By that I mean, trade unhealthy food for better choices. For example, if you usually eat fries, opt for sweet potatoes. Trade soda for water or unsweetened iced tea.

Health and fitness has become a multibillion dollar industry in America, yet the United States is the most obese country in the world. So where’s the disconnect? What are we doing wrong? The problem can be summed up in one word: inconsistency. Consistency can be achieved by integrating fitness into your life every chance you get. Think of fitness in the same way you would invest in your retirement account. Every time you exercise or enjoy a healthy meal, you’re making another deposit. So be sure to make those deposits consistently so your body will serve you well and last for all your years!

Valley Rally Against Cancer By yOlI Bell Each year the Oasis Golf Club and the Oasis Women’s Golf Association present the “Valley Rally Against Cancer” golf fundraiser at the Palmer Golf Course. Randy Tickner, Allison Webb, Adam Schwartz, Karen Parkinson and Pat Green plan and execute the event with total commitment to raising funds for our local Mesquite Cancer HELP Society. Each year it has grown and attracted participants from surrounding areas. This year the event takes place October 26th. Cancer survivors and those who have succumbed to any cancer are remembered with special signage at each of the 18 holes. Sponsorships are by family, friends, or businesses - those who do not golf can also sponsor signage. The tournament begins at 10:00 am with a shotgun start and the format is a 2-person scramble. A BBQ follows the golf tournament to acknowledge tournament winners, plus a raffle offers golf play, golf attire, wine baskets, golf baskets, and more.

We invite the public to join us in this worthy cause. Our local Cancer Society operates solely off local fundraisers and donations and is a 501c3 non-profit organization. For questions regarding this year’s event, please contact Adam Schwartz at the Palmer Golf Course (702-346-7820) or Yoli Bell (702-346-7173).

Mesquite Welcomes ParaLong Drivers By Dean Jarvis, founder of Amputee Long Drive Championship

www.viewonmesquite.com

When some of the best disabled golfers arrive in Mesquite on October 16th and 17th for the ParaLong Drive World Competition, Mesquite will solidify its growing, and well-deserved, reputation as a world hub for Disabled Golf. This was not an accident. Because of the hospitality and volunteerism of the Mesquite community, and the astounding Championship Long Drive Grid at the Mesquite Sports & Event Complex, ParaLong Drive has found a home.

22

This endeavor took leadership and energy from an enthusiastic group of volunteers led by a Local Organizing Committee with support from Mesquite Mayor Pro Tem Geno Withelder, Athletics & Leisure Services Director Bryan Dangerfield and Golf Mesquite Director Cody Law. The most wonderful volunteers in the world have embraced the Amputee (leg and/or arm), Blind, Paramobile (paralyzed), and other differently-abled athletes that participate in the sport of ParaLong Drive and other disabled golf events. The athletes have enjoyed Mesquite so much that six disabled golf events will be held within one calendar year of our inaugural ParaLong Drive exhibition held October 29, 2013.

The individuals mentioned are tireless advocates for the City of Mesquite and the sport of ParaLong Drive. They visited Atlantic City, NJ in June for the Spring Conference of the International Network (ING) of Golf to hold a Long Drive Demonstration and gave numerous interviews with the media to spread the word about Mesquite as the “Home of Long Drive.” Several members representing ING have asked to not only visit Mesquite for golf and to cover the ParaLong Drive Worlds event, but they will also attend the Mesquite Innovation & Technology Summit. Many people are aware that golf has been reintroduced as a sport at the Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games and the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games; but very few realize that golf is excluded from the list of approved Paralympic Sports. Golf’s exclusion from the Paralympics was what motivated me to create an event that would allow my peers to compete at a world-class venue. While watching the Golf Channel promote the RE/MAX World Long Drive Championships, the light went on when I learned about the different divisions that are included in Long Drive. ParaLong Drive inherently solves many of the issues that prevent golf from

being included in the Paralympics, and it has been remarkably easy for blind, paralyzed, and other differently-abled athletes to have the accessibility to compete in the sport. Mesquite, Nevada is known around the world as the “Home of Long Drive,” but I am hopeful that it will also be known as the city that was instrumental in helping Disabled Golfers and ParaLong Drivers around the world to reach the Paralympics. ParaLong Drive is to golf what the Home Run Derby is to baseball, and the Slam Dunk Contest is to basketball; it packs a lot of excitement into a small window of time. Recently at an ING Conference reception, a former NFL star and ESPN on-air broadcaster, who also owns three golf courses, told us that ParaLong Drive is exactly what is needed to add some “pizzazz to the sport of golf.” Speaking of “pizzazz,” we had some amazing performances at the ParaLong Drive Nationals in May with milestones reached in every category that many thought were unreachable; leg amputees driving over 400 yards, arm amputees and blind golfers driving over 300 yards.

The Nationals were the most impressive athletic event that I have ever watched, and I’m excited to watch new stars starting in the sport of ParaLong Drive. All of our athletes have overcome obstacles, and several of the biggest stars in Disabled Golf and ParaLong Drive were fortunate to have benefitted from the wonderful treatment at the Shriners Hospitals for Children. They have been invited to participate in Las Vegas at the ProAm Tournament at the PGA Shriners

Hospitals for Children Open just before the ParaLong Drive Worlds in October. The Mesquite community and volunteers are responsible for making the city a world hub for Disabled Golf, and I would like to thank State Farm Insurance, the City of Mesquite, Stratasys, and the Eureka Casino Resort for their wonderful support of the Amputee Long Drive Championship and ParaLong Drive events.

Please visit our website, amputeelongdrivechampionship.com, for event scheduling, volunteer opportunities, player statistics, innovations and technology and much more.

Editor’s note: View On Mesquite Magazine will continue to bring you coverage on this great event.

Welcome to Mesquite Fire Chief Kash Christopher By MelIssA elIgul View on Mesquite Magazine would like to extend a warm welcome to Fire Chief Kash Christopher. Chief Christopher joined our community in June of this year. He arrived all the way from Bagram, Afghanistan where he has spent the last 16 months as Fire Chief at the busiest airfield in the world.

www.viewonmesquite.com

Chief Christopher joined the Air Force at the age of 19 to see the world and take advantage of job training for his future. He went into the field of Fire Protection by chance. He told the Air Force recruiter “just pick a job for me” and it turned out to be one that he loved. Over the next 22 years of service Chief Christopher traveled the world, obtained his degree and met and married his wife, Elena. He retired from the military in 2008 while stationed at Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas. However, he didn’t stay retired for long. Over the last seven years he continued to work as a Fire Chief in several overseas locations, finally ending up at Bagram, Afghanistan.

While on R&R during Christmas last year, he applied for the Fire Chief position in Mesquite. Three months later he received an invitation to interview for the position. Due to being overseas the interviews took place by phone. During his second interview there was an air attack on the base. “I was hunkered down in my office, muting the phone in between answering their questions so they wouldn’t hear the sirens” he reflects. He was officially offered the job in March and over the next three months made the transition from Bagram to Mesquite. Since taking the Fire Chief position he has been an active part of the community. He is a big supporter and advocate for veterans services and has already been involved with the Veterans Center. Chief Christopher says “That is a great bunch of guys over there. One of the things I love about Mesquite is the support of the veterans.” Mesquite Fire and Rescue has recently relocated their office and most of the staff to Station 3 on John Deere Drive in the Mesquite Technology Center. Chief Christopher said “The staff of twenty-four was a bit cramped over at the old place and we had this nice big facility sitting vacant. It just made sense to be out here.” Along with the larger building, there is a training facility on-site where the firefighters can practice many scenarios such as extracting people from cars to containing mulit-level house fires. Chief Christopher has a strong team by his side and he is looking forward to expanding the department as commerce allows and calling Mesquite home. On behalf of Mesquite we say “Welcome Chief Christopher!”

WHAT’S NEW IN GOLF EQUIPMENT?

IT’S THE YEAR OF THE TURBULATOR By MIchelle BrOOks

The fall season is upon us, cooler temps are here and with that comes innovative new products that will help us decrease our score and enjoy this ever captivating, sometimes frustrating game of golf. One of the things we love most in new products this season is the PING G30 driver. PING has introduced “Turbulators” into the design of the crown which significantly reduces aerodynamic drag on the driver head giving you more club head speed. We like more club head speed! So, what’s a Turbulator? Bubba Watson said, “Who knows what that is,” but he picked up eight more yards off the tee with the new G30 when compared to the G25. Michael Brooks, Ready Golf & Gear owner extraordinaire says, “It’s the Year of the Turbulator!!” If you stop in and ask him, he’ll show you what they are and how they work. You can hit one for yourself and see if you can beat Bubba’s record!

trying to strangle our clubs. This is also a great benefit for golfers with arthritis. The CP2 is not just another softy though. They feature a Control Core™ - a 2.5” inner control stabilizer which will help dissipate vibration and enhance stability. The core reduces Torque by 41% when compared to same grip without core. We believe this grip is a home run. If you’d like to try these new grips on your clubs, Ready Golf & Gear offers same-day re-gripping. You could be gripping lighter and playing better as soon as tomorrow! There are many great new products coming out this season, however we have chosen to highlight these two as we believe they are two of the best. We invite you to stop by and take a look at these and all the new products available for fall.

Another significant addition to the G30 driver is T9S titanium. This material allows the club face to be thinner and hotter. It also saves four grams of weight in the driver head. Saving this weight has allowed PING to move the center of gravity lower and farther back in the head which results in a higher launch and low spin.

As for the softer side of things, Golf Pride has introduced a pretty incredible new grip – the CP2. Introduced in March by Golf Pride this grip is in stock this fall at Ready Golf & Gear. This grip has it all. It’s comfortable, it’s soft, it’s tacky and it’s always performing. The new Golf Pride CP2 grips are 31% softer than any other grip in the Golf Pride line and have less taper at the lower end of the grip. This allows your lower hand to grip about the same diameter as the top hand which discourages us from

www.viewonmesquite.com

Now, I know many of us would like a thinner and hotter face and maybe even a lower center of gravity. But, stay with me; we’re still talking golf clubs here!

Roo Arledge

How on earth did Roo wind up in Mesquite? A native of Australia, she is often asked this exact question. As she puts it, “I went on a really long Walkabout!” (The Aboriginal term for exploring new places)

years Kenny and Roo lived in Nashville where he perused his music career. They were married for thirty-five wonderful years. The saddest day of Roo’s life was this past year when God decided he wanted Kenny to sing on his stage.

Roo’s mother was the most influential person in her life. Her “Mum” was French, spoke several languages, and was an interpreter for the Australian Government and Sitmar/P&O Cruise Lines. Roo’s mother took her children on international cruises, impressing upon them that travel is one of the best educations a person can have.

“I met many music and movie stars working at Opryland. When I was helping plan the March of Dimes Charity Event at the Stockyard Downtown, Burt Reynolds asked me if I needed help setting up the chairs, I emphatically answered ‘YES!’ He was a very good worker.” Roo mused.

During her elementary and high school years Roo was no stranger to world exploration. She traveled from Sydney to England; visiting Asia, Africa, Egypt and Europe before reaching her destination. Roo would attend school in England then travel back by cruise ship to Australia. Roo didn’t realize at the time just how all the travel would influence and mold her view of the world. Visiting both refined and underdeveloped countries around the world, she feels blessed that in the geographic lottery, she was fortunate enough to be born in Coogee Beach, Australia, a small beach town. While in Nursing School at Sydney Hospital Roo realized she wanted to see America before she settled down. She traveled to Hawaii, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Ohio where her sister Betty lives and Florida where her brother Arthur lives. While in Florida she met her dear husband Kenny. Kenny was a native Texan and fabulous country singer. He wrote songs for Conway Twitty, performed on TNN network and at the world renowned Grand Ole Opry. For ten

She also earned a number of certifications from the American Hotel & Lodging Association’s Educational Institute. After receiving her certifications she relocated to Lincoln City, Oregon as Director of Food and Beverage for Chinook Winds Casino Resort. In 2006 she was recruited by Eureka Casino Resort as the Director of Food and Beverage. Roo has been a Food and Beverage Director for almost twenty years. Working for Greg Lee and Andre Carrier at the Eureka is by far her favorite place that she has ever worked. They embrace Roo’s favorite business quote by Jack Welch “Great leaders and visionaries have the ability to see around corners.” Greg and Andre realize that if everyone in the Mesquite community is successful, the Eureka will be successful too.

Since the passing of the love of her life, Roo has kept herself busy with her two passions, her job and writing children’s books. Roo is writing a children’s book series “My Genie and Me”. Move over JK Rowland – Exit the Wizards – Enter the Genies. For the past two years, Roo and her sister have spent many hours co-writing this children’s book series. . They donate 10% of the net profits from the Book Sales to St Jude Children’s Hospital and they have also received a thank you card from the White House. The children’s books are available in JS Merchant retail store in Eureka. The books are also available online and in most library systems. Roo believes Mesquite should be entered into the Best Small Towns in America contest. What she likes most about Mesquite are the wonderful residents, scenic beauty, sunsets, and no major weather threats. Roo is honored to be featured in View On Mesquite Magazine and hopes the magazine continues to feature women of Mesquite as she believes there are a number of women that deserve this honor.

Where in the World…… Do you Want to Play Golf?

Photo courtesy of rob krieger By Rob Krieger Like a lot of golfers, I have a list a mile long on places that I want to take my golf game to on the road. Whether you want to play with family or friends, as a couple or for that ladies/guys trip, the options are endless. I am constantly asked about different destinations on where to play so here are some that will not disappoint. The best part of these options is that if you want to go with someone that doesn’t want to play golf every waking second, or not at all, a good time can still be had by everyone.

The Greenbrier – West Virginia, USA

28

– Best in Summer & Late SeptemberEarly October but is open year round for activities even when the golf courses are covered in snow. “America’s Resort” is home to the PGA Tour and is one of the tours top destinations for the players and their families. There are 5 courses to play and a ton of things to do other than Golf, Spa and Casino like: Bowling, Culinary Classes, Tennis, Theatre & Fitness but outdoors there is Archery, Biking, Carriage Rides, Fishing, Hunting, Gun Club, Horseback Riding, Kayaking, Whitewater Rafting, Segway Tours and ATV Riding. You can even tour the “Bunker” – Americas Second White House. This is a classic destination that has been catering to guests since 1778.

Napa Valley – California, USA – Late May/Early June. The great part of this trip is that you can stay and play at the newly renovated Silverado Resort & Spa. There are 2-18 hole courses to play and the PGA tour plays the Fry’s Open in October. A beautiful scenic destination

in the prestigious wine country of Napa Valley where you can golf all day and then test your palette on some of the finest wines in the world. You might even want to get daring and get a view from above and go for an exciting hot air balloon ride. There is always champagne to celebrate your returning to earth. Cheers!

Dominican Republic – Fall /Winter Punta Cana – There are a lot of all inclusive resorts like a Hard Rock or Dreams. Depending on the atmosphere you want to have from romantic and small like Zoetry to the new and modern Secrets, Dominican has it all. The golf is some of the best on the planet. Last

fall, I played the Punta Espana by Jack Nicklaus at La Cana and with a good portion of the holes by the ocean, I have never played a course with such a beautiful ocean setting with turquoise water surrounding the fairways and greens. There are other courses like Corales, a Tom Fazio design with its ocean cliffs, sea coves and Caribbean waves misting the course as you play which is bound to bring you back again and again. Many of the resorts are all inclusive with countless activities to do or not do, you can’t make a bad choice.

Mexico - Fall/Winter/Spring Cancun – No matter if you want to stay in more populated hotel district or the

view on TRAVEL quieter southern Riveria Maya area you have your choice of amazing properties and golf courses like Moon Palace, Riviera Cancun, Playa Mujeres or the PGA Tour tested Mayakoba design by Greg Norman. Most resorts are all inclusive with unlimited food and drinks with the golf being an extra charge but you have to get away from the pool and the beach at some point. Puerto vallarta & Los Cabos/Cabo San Lucas – Two unique areas in western Mexico with some new twists. Both are building new courses and adding to some already great challenges but in Puerto Vallarta some of the 9 courses available have added “All-Inclusive” golf to cater to golfers. Play as much golf as you want, drinks, food, range, golf cart are all included in the price of the green fee. Some of the courses have incredible views of the ocean and lagoons and have been designed by the best like Nicklaus and Weiskopf. Puerto Vallarta has many top rated courses which are playable for all skill levels. No need to bring your own birdie bottle. In Los Cabos/Cabo San Lucas – This golf destination within a short period of time has risen to the top of many golfers bucket lists. It is a luxury destination with high end resorts and golf courses at the tip of the baja peninsula. There is a lot of new development happening due to the popularity of the area which currently has 108 resorts with more to come. Some of the courses are Palmilla (Nicklaus), Cabo del Sol (Weiskopf), Cabo Riviera (Dye), Cabo Real (RTJones II) and the latest creation of Puerto Los Cabos which combines 9 holes from Nicklaus and 9 holes from Norman. Fabuloso!

Scotland & Ireland – Spring/Summer/Fall

Go play where the game started. History speaks through the walls of the clubhouse and you can walk where the legends of golf have walked and play the game the way it was meant to be played. There are so many places to play and things to do, there is just isn’t enough room here but here are two unique options to cross the pond and experience the birthplace of golf. Azamara Cruise line and Celebrity Cruises both offer a 2015 British Open package where you can cruise, play golf,

see the sites and attend the British Open. Either itinerary would be a trip of a lifetime all without packing and unpacking. Guinness Anyone? So go travel and take your golf game on the road. There is a whole world of golf courses waiting for you to enjoy. Fairways & Greens! Rob Krieger

If you would like any more information on any of these destinations for you or your golf group it would be a pleasure to provide more details. rob@sgugolf.com

TENNIS – FOR THE HEALTH OF IT! By rIck WhIttINgtON, u.s.P.t.A. As a thirty-five year member of the USPTA (United States Professional Tennis Association) and a student of the fitness industry, I was pleased to see the USPTA sponsor a new initiative to encourage people to see the physical and mental benefits of playing tennis, “the sport of a lifetime”. One of the most prevalent health crises we face in the country is obesity, especially with our children. It has been reported that this is the first generation of children that are not expected to live as long as we do; due to high cholesterol, diabetes and high blood pressure. As cited in USA Today on Oct. 29, 2007, Catherine Davis, professor of pediatrics at the Medical College of Georgia, reported that “children who are not active maybe at a disadvantage academically.” Her research, funded by the National Institutes of Health, found that children who were involved in intermittent, high-energy running games for at least 40 minutes had significant improvement on an executive function test (examining skills for planning, organizing, goal achievement, resisting impulses, etc.) over children who did no activity. The active group also exhibited an increase on a cognitive performance scale. Darla Castelli, professor of Kinesiology and Community Health at the University of Illinois, says that this corroborates

much of their research citing that they have “found strong associations between math performance and aerobic fitness among children.” As for adults, an eight-year study found a “relationship between physical inactivity and cognitive decline” across all subgroups. The sedentary lives of corporate workers result in insufficient physical stress and that energy imbalance negatively impacts cognitive performance. The results also found “a ‘close’ relationship between exercise and mental acuity, a little exercise is good, but more is better” so long as adequate recovery is provided and overtraining does not occur. Tennis is the ultimate exercise – both mentally and physically •

People who participate in tennis three hours per week at a moderately vigorous intensity, cut in half their risk of death from any cause, according to the late Dr. Ralph Paffenbarger, who was an internationally recognized exercise authority and studied more than 10,000 people for 20 years

Tennis players scored higher in vigor, optimism and self-esteem while scoring lower in depression, anger, confusion, anxiety and tension than other athletes and non-athletes, according to Dr. Joan Finn and colleagues at Southern Connecticut State University

Since tennis requires alertness and tactical thinking, it may generate new connections between nerves in the brain and promote a lifetime of continuing brain development

Tennis, as a racquet sport, outperforms golf and most other sports in developing positive personality characteristics according to Dr. Jim Gavin, author of “The ‘Exercise Habit.”

Competitive tennis burns more calories than most other activities, according to studies in caloric expenditures. A detailed analysis in the January 2005 issue of Consumer Reports, compared various activities and the calories burned. The article showed that tennis ranks among the top five activities that one could participate in to burn the most calories and, in fact, burns more calories than swimming, rowing, weightlifting, jazzercise, hiking or golf.

History of Golf in Mesquite

In 1989 the first golf course to open in the Mesquite area was just across the Arizona State Line. The Palms Golf Course was built by Si Redd owner of the Oasis Casino Resort to offer the resort patrons a golf experience along with the casino experience.

By erIkA kutA MArler- MuseuM cOOrdINAtOr VIrgIN VAlley herItAge MuseuM

In 1995 the Oasis Palmer Golf Club was developed. In 1997 they added a nine hole course known as the Vistas course. This course was renamed the Canyons after the Canyon Crest development was approved by the City. In 2000 Falcon Ridge Golf Course opened in the Falcon Ridge Master Development. Wolf Creek Golf Course was also opened in 2000 and gave those individuals who came to Mesquite to golf a one of a kind desert golf experience. In 2010 Conestoga, a part of the Sun City Mesquite Development, joined the ranks of our world class courses.

Mesquite’s golf courses are well known around the country and world. If you Google golf and Mesquite, Nevada reviews of Mesquite and the different courses are endless and very positive. The Nevada Open is held here every year in November. For 40 years the Nevada Open has been in existence and has found a great home in Mesquite, Nevada. Mesquite has also been taking great strides to make golf accessible to everyone who enjoys the game. This year was the second annual ParaLong Drive nationals which had a national and international division held at the The Mesquite Sports and Event Complex. The Mesquite Sports and Event Complex was built in 2008 specifically for the RE/MAX World Long Drive Championships. While we have a young history when it comes to golf, we have a bright future in the sport. The Virgin Valley Heritage Museum is located at 35 W. Mesquite Blvd. The museum is open Tuesday- Saturday from 10am-4pm. Phone number (702) 346-5705. You can also find us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/MesquiteNVMuseum.

Coyote Willows Golf Course

Welcome to Mesquite’s only regulation 9-hole golf course! The Coyote Willows Golf Course, located on Hafen Lane west of Riverside, has been operated by a group of extremely dedicated volunteers for the past six years. The course was initially finished in 2004, but before it could open to the public, flooding in 2005 wiped out four of the nine holes. It limped along as a 5-hole course until July of 2008 when it was shut down.

StarNursery.com

The course is fairly challenging, but is family-friendly and fun! Reasonable rates and club rentals are available. The course is open 7 days a week, so drop by or call (702) 345-3222 for more information or to book a tee time. You can also visit our website at: www.CoyoteWillowsGolf.com or find us on Facebook. We look forward to seeing you!

House Call

www.viewonmesquite.com

Through the efforts of the late Tony Evans, a group of residents of Coyote Willows banded together to get the course up and running again. All nine holes were eventually opened and ready for play. Flooding again in 2010 put two holes out of commission, but those were repaired fairly quickly and the course has been steadily improving since.

Mesquite Attains Bicycle friendly status!! By keN cOOk The League of American Bicyclists announced its Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) awards and presented Mesquite with a Bronze level award. “Making this healthy and active transportation mode safe and easy is of growing importance to cities of all sizes,” said League President Andy Clarke. “We’re excited that Mesquite has made the smart and vital investments to become a designated Bicycle Friendly Community.” The Bronze award recognizes Mesquite’s commitment to improving bicycling conditions and its investment in promotion, education programs, infrastructure and pro-bicycling policies. Since its inception, more than 769 distinct communities have applied, and only 303 across America have received the designation. “This round of applications overwhelmingly confirms what we heard at the National Bike Summit this year: riding a bike

embodies the quality-of-life aspirations of communities across the country,” said Clarke. The BFC program is revolutionizing the way communities evaluate quality of life, sustainability and transportation networks, while allowing them to benchmark their progress toward improving bicycle friendliness. This

recognition clearly enhances Mesquite’s reputation as a great place to live, work and play. Not resting on their laurels, the Bicycle

Welcome, Golfers!

Advisory Group met recently with City staff to discuss bike plan priorities, street project opportunities, as well as funding opportunities for the various projects. Improvements to roads, such as bike lanes, signage, symbols and pavement markings will be completed over time, as funding becomes available. The Bicycle Advisory Group is currently working on a couple of bicycle related events. Please mark your calendars for ‘Mesquite Night Out’ on September 25th, beginning at 5:30PM, and April 10-12, 2015, for a Bicycle Race Weekend which will bring cyclists from around the country to stay and race in Mesquite.

TENNIS TNT The Mesquite tennis community has a new addition, Sun City Mesquite added a state of the art backboard. This Rally Champion backboard is uniquely dual-curved and tilted so that the ball rebounds with extraordinary realism. Drilling using a backboard is a great fitness tool as well as building stroke consistency. Have a goal when you are drilling such as picking a spot on the board and keeping count of the number of hits in a row. You can work on your footwork by moving up and back or side to side. To warm-up for your drills, bring a weighted jump rope and do at least a 5 to 7 minute program. Finally, you can create a game point by starting with your serve and have a planned point in mind. When playing a match, use the early strike as a strategy. This strategy would include shots like a return of serve down

By dONNA eAds

the line or a lob into their backhand. Both of these returns work well against a team that serves and comes to the net. Always communicate with your partners so they are ready to react to your opponents. Another example is poaching off the first couple of serves from your partner. Most teams either talk about this play or use hand signals so their partner is aware of the plan. Using the one two punch of a drop shot followed by a lob is a great early strategy. You should keep them guessing as to what you are planning and worried about the next point. Tiebreaks are hard enough to keep straight but now we have two types which are the traditional and the Coman. The Coman was designed for doubles play so your team’s server always serves from the side they have had in the set. If you find yourself confused on a switch,

get everyone to agree on the score, the server, and the side. Immediately move to the agreed place in the tiebreak and resume play. If the first serve had already been done and was a fault, that team does not get to take two serves or play a let. Thus, the play starts with the second serve. Another tip is not to get too close to the net because of three reasons. One, your opponents will lob your team often, second is the fact that you cannot hit a ball until it has cleaned the net, and third, if you or any part of you touch the net, you lose the point. Your follow through may cross the net as long as you hit the ball on your side. If you are pulled in to finish a point, back up to your usual volley position as quickly as possible.

See you on the courts!

more Native Americans become involved in sports like the legendary Jim Thorpe, Letterman’s Idol. Having seen extremely great talent on many reservations throughout the United States, Letterman wanted an avenue for Native Americans to showcase their abilities. He began with basketball, as he was playing with the Provo Blazers. He

and his fellow teammates worked hard to promote and host many tournaments. Mr. Letterman was also involved in softball and worked with many different softball organizations – ASA, USSSA, NSA, and ISA during which time he noticed that each group held tournaments for Seniors, Hispanic, Black American, Military, Police, Firefighters, and Industrial. All groups were covered with the exception of Native Americans so in 1995 he began the NISA Native American World Series. The first year brought in four teams and each year since has brought dramatic growth. In 2013 the tournament brought in 87 teams from all over the United States and Canada. The goal of NISA is to have an Olympic event for Native Americans in a variety of sports. The NISA is very excited to return to Mesquite! In fact, Mesa View Medical Group has three new physicians now accepting patients, including a cardiologist, family practice and an additional general surgeon. Each of these physicians could have settled anywhere in the country and they chose to make Mesquite their permanent home. There will be several opportunities for folks to meet these physicians personally this fall and winter. All three of them will be speaking at the Chamber of Commerce luncheon on September 10th at the Eureka Casino Resort, at a community meet and greet at Mesa View Regional Hospital on September 25th and other events that will be announced.

Longer Tee Shots & Crisper Fairway Shots by Cocking Your Wrists Properly Rob Krieger - PGA Golf Professional An important key to hitting your tee shots longer or improving contact with your fairway shots is how and when you set your wrists. This is also known as the wrist cock or hinging your wrists which when done properly can add distance, power and better contact. Key 1 – Setting the wrists is different for fairway shots and tee shots. WHY? Fairway shots are meant to strike the ball on a descending approach and on the upswing for tee shots because your ball is off the ground and in the air. Key 2 – The wrist set should NEVER go past 90 degrees from the lead arm forearm (left arm for right handed players) during the backswing.

Key 3 – Hinging your wrists should not force your lead arm to bend. Lead arm should always be straight in the backswing. Key 4 – Unhinging of the wrists does not start the downswing, which is a main reason players slice. The body should start the downswing and pull the club back to the ball.

F1

F3

F2

F4

FAIRWAY SHOTS – Ball is played about 3” off your front foot. In the take away, the club brushes along the ground at least to the instep of the back foot and then will start to come up (F1). As it starts to come off the ground, the left hand starts to push the end of the grip down to the ground so that when the left arm is parallel to the ground the club should be at 90 degrees to the ground and the forearm (F2&F3). Your right elbow is still close to the body and bent down. After this point, the rest of the backswing should be shoulder and hip turn (F4). By setting the hands this early (F3), it makes the last part of the backswing easy because the body just has to turn to complete a backswing. To start the downswing, the body pulls the club back to the ball striking it and then touching the turf IN FRONT of the ball. BALL THEN TURF!

TEE SHOTS – The ball is played off the heel of your front foot. It is played further forward in the stance than when on the ground because you should be catching the ball on the upswing. In the take away, the club brushes along the ground till just past the outside of the back foot as you stretch-out your left arm and even allow the right elbow to come away from the body as you try to make a big arc (T1&T2). As the left arm gets parallel to the ground, the club should start to get vertical but not be at 90 degrees like a fairway swing(T2&T3). Turn your shoulders to finish the back swing while setting the club only to 90 degrees and MUST NOT GO PAST PARALLEL to the ground (T4). To start the downswing, the lower body pulls the upper body and the club back to the ball and the club should catch the ball below its equator on the upswing. The wider arc in the backswing will automatically make the club head further away and generate more speed without swinging any harder. Bigger Arc = Faster Clubhead Speed. Maintain good rhythm and tempo and your tee shots will go longer, naturally. For further explanation, please check out my video regarding setting the hands at stgeorgegolflessons.com. Christmas in July By NOel sMIth

www.viewonmesquite.com

Colonial Property Management would like to express our heartfelt appreciation to all those who participated in our 8th Annual Christmas in July. We prepared packages for 64 residents at Highland Manor. Through the generous support of the community and our Las Vegas and St. George vendors, we were able to fill each gift with personal items such as soap, lotion, shaving cream, razors, shampoo, conditioner and dental kits. We received many beautiful handmade crocheted blankets that were a huge hit this year with the residents. With the support of the community this year, we were also able to supply each resident with a new shirt or lounge wear purchased with assistance from the Highland Manor staff. The Highland Manor staff went above and beyond by supplying us with information on the personal interests and needs of each resident, so that we could tailor each gift. Christmas in July gets better and better each passing year. Thank you to all who contributed to make Christmas in July a wonderful and successful event.

BUDDING CHAMPION GOLFER LOVES MESQUITE

www.viewonmesquite.com

With all the beautiful and award winning golf courses in Mesquite it’s no surprise that Mesquite is a favorite place for golfers of all skill levels. In fact, there are hundreds of “snowbirds” who migrate to the valley each fall to spend a winter enjoying the mild weather and golf. If you are one of those golfers playing on one of the Oasis’ two courses don’t be surprised if a pint-sized blond whirlwind with the talent and tenacity of a young Tiger Woods asks to play through, as she burns up the greens.

48

That would be nine year old Ali Mulhall, a Mesquite snowbird and one of the top young golfers in her age group in the in the country. Last year she was the Nevada Player of the Year for the U.S. Kids Golf Tour and has won numerous tournaments and other U.S. Kids championships in other states. So far this year she has won 19 out of the last 20 tournaments she has played in the Utah State Match Play Champion 10 and Under division of the Utah Jr. Golf Association.

Not only does she love it but she excels at it. At age six she made an 85 yard shot for a hole-in-one on the Canyons Golf Course at the Oasis Golf Club in Mesquite and her name is included on the members “Hole-in-One” plaque in the Oasis Golf Course clubhouse. But she is not satisfied to leave it at that. She is practicing hard to beat her father’s present total of eight hole-in-ones. When asked how many she thinks she wants to get she smiles, “Probably ten!”

Ali comes by her talent naturally. Both her mother and father play golf. According to her dad Chris Mulhall her mom Heather is a “good player” and he is a PGA professional at the Rolling Green Golf Club in Green River, Wyoming. There was little doubt that she would play golf with the family so involved but no one suspected she would be such a prodigy. Her mother explains that they have a putting green in the basement and they had a set of clubs made for Ali before she was born.

That goal is more than a possibility. Her list of golf accomplishments already include a double eagle on the number 12 green of Palmer course at the Oasis and a birdie on the last hole at U.S. Kids world championships at Pinehurst last year. She also finished fifth in the world at those championships.

Ali explains that she started playing on the putting green at age three. “He (dad) just started me with putting, and then I got a driver when I was four. Then I got a seven iron and a nine iron. I just loved it!”

So it’s no wonder she already has blocked out her future. “I want to be on the LPGA tour when I grow up.” She can’t officially join the tour until she is 16, but she is already getting a taste of the life. Last year Las Vegas based LPGA golfer Natalie Gublis invited her to play a practice round at an LPGA event in Phoenix.

She is also among a very exclusive group of golfers who have been invited by golfer and putter designer Scotty Cameron to his Tour Studio and received a Circle L putter and head cover. Ali’s dad explained, “Scotty Cameron was a very good player. If you play him and you beat him he’ll make you a Circle L (for loser) putter and they are worth lots and lots of money. So when we were there, Ali asked him to play.” Cameron told her he would make her a Circle L head cover not for “loser” but for “luck.” So she has the one and only “Circle L for Lucky” head cover in the world. Ali’s little sister Molli is starting to make her mark too. According to Chris, Molli, age 5, has been playing quite a bit and is a hopeful to win the “Player of the Year in Utah” in her age group. She played in five tournaments this summer, winning four. With a second potential future LPGA tot working her way up, there should be a lot of interesting play on the Oasis Golf Club courses this winter. The Mulhalls couldn’t be happier and they love the folks at the Oasis Golf Club. Chris stressed they want

to thank the staff for their support, especially Randy Tickner, Director of Operations and Adam Schwartz, the Club’s PGA Professional. Chris also appreciates all the players on the Oasis courses and appreciates the way they have welcomed his family to Mesquite.

This spring Ali participated in an event sponsored by the Oasis Women’s Golf Association where she hit tee shots on a par three for each lady participating. Association President Colleen Burton explained with a laugh, “We got to use the shot she gives us. And that’s it. We

had total faith that she would do better than we’re going to do!” Burton adds, “...we’re all proud of her. It’s just really great. … We can all say, see we know her, because she is going to be really, really big someday!”
