Energy Efficiency Tips for Manufacturing Plants

These facility consume more energy than most others in the US and responsible for about 30% of all GHG emissions nationwide.  Benchmark energy use with ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager and set an energy savings goal  Evaluate your facility’s systems (from motors, compressed air and steam to heat processing) for waste and misuse. Ensure they are operated according to user manuals. Fix leaks, add needed insulation and adjust systems based on plant’s needs and uses 

Turn off equipment when not in use. Walk around your plant after hours to look for unnecessary energy consumption. Check the settings on all equipment and establish shut-down procedures to save energy. Make sure all plant employees adhere to these measures.

Hold workshops for your employees about how they can minimize their energy use in the plant and how that will decrease associated costs. Purchase Energy STAR and other EE equipment if you can.

Switch out old fluorescent and incandescent lighting for T-8s, Energy STAR qualified CFLs and other EE lighting systems. Perform routine maintenance and make sure all lights are turned off when not in use. Take advantage of task lighting and daylight and install occupancy sensors where you can.
