Special Features FREE transit passes Sacramento Regional Transit is generously providing complimentary bus and light-rail passes for all attendees from Monday through Thursday (Aug. 12-15).
Charitable bike build New youth bikes will be available for participants to help build throughout the event – an effort that will directly benefit Sacramento kids. At the close of the conference, the assembled bikes will be donated to local youth organizations. We are looking for cash contributions to purchase new bikes for this effort, or the donation of new bikes (for kids aged 9-17). On-site bike programs Practical Cycle will provide bicycles (and helmets) for our free Bike Share program so you can explore the local bike trails and Sacramento’s lively downtown and midtown areas. Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates is sponsoring and coordinating a free Bike Valet service for those riding their bikes to the event each day.
Getting youth involved The conference will feature a strong youth component, including participation of middle- and high-school students from the Sacramento region and California. Youth will serve as speakers, tour leaders, volunteers and participants, and fill key roles in coordinating special events.

Optional Events Monday Afternoon, August 12 ■ Annual SRTS Coordinators Meeting The Safe Routes to School National Partnership’s FREE annual meeting is Monday, August 12 (1:00-5:00 p.m.), followed by a Safe Routes Social. This half-day event includes an update on the National Partnership’s work and plans for the future, a federal update, and popular breakout groups. Sign up for this free meeting when you register for the conference. Thursday Afternoon, August 15 ■ California Advocacy Day for SRTS, Pedestrian and Bike Funds Organized by the Safe Routes to School National Partnership and Transform, Californians can make their voices heard at the State Capitol by participating in an Advocacy Day after the conference. Mid-August is the perfect time to make an impact, when all bills that will be headed to the Governor’s desk must pass out of the Legislature by mid-September. Safe Routes and Sacramento 4th National Conference ■ August 13-15, 2013 Sheraton Grand Hotel ■ Sacramento, CA Located in downtown Sacramento, the Sheraton Grand Sacramento is in the beautifully restored, historic Public Market Building, in the heart of the city’s bustling walkable and bikable downtown, a block away from the State Capitol. Other interesting destinations – pleasant places to walk and bike with wide tree-lined streets, high-visibility crosswalks and traffic-calmed streets – include Historic Sutter’s Fort, Old Sacramento, the Crocker Art Museum, the California Railroad Museum and the region’s crown jewel, the American River Parkway. ■

Scholarships
The Local Government Commission is sponsoring scholarships to offset registration fees for educators, school administrators, teachers, parent volunteers, students, advocates for youth, youth leaders, and small grassroots and nonprofit organizations working on SRTS or other issues related to the health and safety of children. Priority will be given to those traveling from outside the region/state, and to participants from communities with no existing infrastructure for SRTS programs. Check our website for details. ■
