West Berkeley Public Library First Zero Net Energy Library in California
West Berkeley Public library is the first zero net energy (ZNE) library in California and celebrated its official grand re-opening on December 14, 2013. The new structure replaces a branch library building formerly located on the site. With its innovative design, the library will have a net zero annual energy bill and a zero carbon footprint. Harley Ellis Devereaux (HED) was selected by the City of Berkeley as the architect for the 9,399 sf library because of its pioneering ZNE approach to the site and program. PG&E provided funding under its Savings By Design Program and became a partner in supporting the analytical and modeling work. To minimize energy consumption in the building, the design scheme utilizes daylighting through a series of skylights and a large glass curtain wall on the main façade. With the help of Computer Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling, the design team devised a clever natural ventilation scheme that uses negative pressure to pull in fresh air and help to regulate the temperature. Solar is utilized for both PV power generation and solar thermal for radiant floor heating. The library’s BMS (Building Automation/ Monitoring System) also controls the PV, lighting, radiant heating and cooling. The sustainable features enable the building to have an energy utilization (EUI) rate of 17kbtu/sf-yr, a savings of over 50% compared to a similar building designed to title 24 (with an estimated EUI of 35kbtu/sf-yr). The new design also gives the library a more prominent position on the street, increasing its visibility, as it continues to be a centerpiece in this vibrant and diverse community.
