THE LAST SGP 2017! //Festival Theme “15 minutes of Fame” //How can one feel the fame? //Can the design be something that user can celebrate? Short lived? //Being the last SGP, can the experience be a memory or something memorable?

MUSIC FESTIVALS IN UNITED KINGDOM

FESTIVAL LOCATION

//SITE

AT HUNTINGTON SHIRE DISTRICT, UK Chosen from a shortlist of sites around the festival; selected by SGP which will vary in context and parameters. Open Field, woodland clearing, waterfront etc.

FAME is synonymous with CELEBRITY, which is the state of being known by many people.

Fame is bestowed upon talent or opportunity, but however... It is the LIMELIGHT that decides FAMEFACTOR

NOTABILITY The Fact / Quality of being notable HOW CAN THE USERS SEEK THE LIMELIGHT?

FAME IS ABSTRACTED AS AN OBJECT, as a physical entity? MEDIA ATTENTION PUBLIC EYE / INTEREST

SECRET GARDEN PARTY

Creativity, Participation, Exploration and Adventure are the motivators for organisers of SGP. It is a challenge to satisfy the need in coming up with such an installation,and so must ensure their demand that the installation is to be played and engaged with, rather than observed. Play being the key word; behaving silly and getting messy are encouraged and expected rather than frowned upon in SGP.

A DESIGN THAT IS MEANT TO BE TAKEN APART THAN BEING PRESENT AMONG OTHER STAGES OF THE MUSIC FESTIVAL FAME is synonymous with CELEBRITY, which is the state of being known by many people.

//DESIGN INTENT

01. Notice

02. Stir attention

The sort of attention the design All eyes would follow the those installation would get among a who fiddle around with a piece crowd of people watching it / of the design at first walking past for the first time

NOTABILITY The Fact / Quality of being notable HOW CAN THE USERS SEEK THE LIMELIGHT?

FAME IS ABSTRACTED AS AN OBJECT, as a physical entity? MEDIA ATTENTION PUBLIC EYE / INTEREST

03. Fancy to own Party lovers would want to fancy “their” piece of installation

Should the design make people participate / engage in an activity, stir attention / create interaction ?

How about an installation that is not just to be a observed but, to be played with and meant to be given away ?

Being a boutique festival, the SGP has several events and upcoming installation will become a part of every individual when it starts to be dismantled by crazy celebrating minds.

Installation can be a landmark where any of the SGP events can be organised or located. Make it a part of you some how! snap pictures with it, dress or dance with it for the rave

Program of the proposed installation will has to have its natue of the festivity among all other events in SGP. The crowd will have to explore and celebrate the Farewell disassemble

Doodle on it! every user gets to do any art on it or leave a signature mark. probably a batten from the SGP which can be passed on to its successor (Best loved festival of 2018, UK). So! save it as a calling card for the next party..

Something from UK’s one of the most best loved and successful boutique festivals

Probably like a calling card, a signatured show piece on a desk

FAME & CELEBRITY THEME

Having announced that this summer will be a send-off that SGP deserves...

What is the design about? The installation will be a composition of a designed aggregate component which is expected to be disassembled in an eventful sequence by the user, during or towards the end of the event. The task is to design the component that anyone would want to take back or creatively have it.

... A Memento The idea of designing something as an object of fame that the people can seek as a memento sounds perfect for a farewell celebration. Every component is a souvenir that the user can have at the end of the event, something which is memorable of one’s experience at the end of SGP journey.

//INITIAL DEVELOPMENT To explore more with the joinery piece before finalising any theoretical principle Applying similar set of methods to assemble a form

must solve these joints

Having alternate layers of inverted component Change in orientation with in 2 modules

Since the panel has a specified thickness, the combinations can improve the machinery aesthetics The form involves Tessellation of same profile for both the panels and as a joinery element

NEED The model is taking shape but the holder pieces need to be precise and components not simply piled up Whether the removal sequence should be constranied with in a direction?

change in profile angle 70.5’

//INSTALLATION PROPOSITION

Although directional oriented, the fixture profile has potential to follow a BRANCHING STRUCTURE

>URBAN EVALUATION Analysis of precedent

NEED To set rules for such a branching system so as to understand the nodes and develop the stucture

>OPTION GENERATION Curate ideas relating the theme of festival >CONTEXT MAPPING Design in relation with context

Component design aim >Lightweight profile >Volumetric sensation >Less surfaces probably design of panel >Simplest joinery system possible >Suggest an after use

//TYPE 1 PROFILE

>DESIGN ITERATION Explore possibilities + manifest

What makes one feel like a celebrity among the crowd? What decides the fame factor? Is it possible to simplify the model and make it not restricted to a particular direction? if so, what can be the outcome?

Sometimes it is the talent while the rest is by chance or opportunities. But with respect to a festival, to be specific in context with the SGP, fame is defined by how one gets all the attention. It is the limelight that decides the Fame Factor!

Can the design translate this limelight as an abstraction? change in profile angle 70.5’ //TYPE 2 PROFILE

The idea of Fame being pictured as an object and given away to the attendees shall denote a strong impression in an event like Secret Garden Party, which will hold its own significance among a crowd which is yet to / may not receive the “Object of Fame”. Anyone physically owning it will naturally stir attention for that moment and THAT is the limelight we are talking about.

Profile Angle 60’ 120’ Variation with patterns evolved FINDING model tend to grow in a particular direction

The design attempts to guide the development of the city into a futuristic hub of culture and spirituality, respecting the nature, responding to needs of Makkans & Haj pilgrims and in line with principles of Islam. To create a Urban Morphology and experience of a Makkan city, the masterplan moves towards a new typology of building and vertical public realm that embrace the contours. The built forms are broken down through a careful sculpting process that closely resemble the rise and fall of the terrain. Opening up key natural areas and vantage points for public nodes help in feeling the constant link to the Haram and Kaaba

Nature begins from the hills of Makkah. The design adapts to the contour slopes, creating nodes of light at the peaks, landscape at the valleys, and built fabric along the slope - that responds to the contour. The natural landscape is integrated into active public spaces. The vistas to valley are emphasized.

SHADING BY CLUSERED BUILDINGS

A pedestrian community is possible only in a well designed micro environment. The environment that provides shade, comfortable micro-climate with landscape, slopes with human accessible ramps, and continuity to the natural environment of valley, creating a seamless interwinding built and natural environments. Traditional vernacular strategies improving the micro environmentare incorporated into architectural language.

Narrow She’ab streets open up to wider public plazas that bring people together socialize. EDUCATION RESIDENTIAL PUBLIC PLAZA The activities that spillover and overlap further incentivizes socializing. Specific programs like library, retail, souq market, Dakkah, creates different opportunities for different sets of people RESIDENTIAL - both Makkans and Haj pilgrims to socialize. COMMERCIAL

The density of urban fabric mimics the density of vernacular Makkah, which creates an intimate experience for a pedestrian, creating shade and a view of sky along the streets, suitable for social interaction both visually and functionally. Density also retains the cultural significance of the Arab city.

Though spirituality plays as the central program, a diverse set of programs are incorporated into the urban fabric to mix of people, across the day, around the year. Programs are designed for both Makkans and the Haj pilgrims. Specific programs address each of the 6 identified usergroups, across 6 identified times of the day.

SHE’AB SKYLINE The skyline reflects the hilly terrain of the region. Low and Mid rise stepping buildings highlighted by Minaret.

SHE’AB Streets act not only as a circulation space but an activity space in itself. The shaded pedestrian walkways, act as a spillover for the activities on the ground floor such as retail.

VOLUME DENSITY The vernacular practices in hot and dry climates recommend high density, which provides shading for the walkways inbetween. The high densiy opens up to public squares with nature.

RHYTHM Massing is distributed small and mid rise buildings with high ground coverage, with only few key buildings rising high.

RHYTHM - FACADE VOLUME The buildings of varying heights are Layed out on podium to create multiple terraces and create uninterrupted view to Haram.

SCALE The scale is carefully controlled to provide consistant Makkah character.

PROPORTION The facade is divided in verticals to create a sense of height and avoid huge volumes.

SHADING MASHRABIYA FINS MATERIAL Materials are inspired by traditionally used locally available materials which respond to the terrain around. Wood, stone and fins give a consistant look and feel.

RANDOMISED FENESTRATION COLOUR The warm tones of beige and brown are a result of materials used in construction, which reflects a historic city.

MASHRABIYA WITH SCREENS MASHRABIYA&DETAILS The lower levels have retail front with stone facade. The mid levels have fenestrations on wooden facade. The upper levels are trested with glass and fins for shading.
