LEADING BOLD CHANGE™ Creating Change Leaders at All Levels

ENGAGE PEOPLE QUICKLY: HEARTS AND MINDS WELCOME NOTE

“PENGUINIZING” THE TRAINING

Welcome to Leading Bold Change™ – The world’s leading workshop on change leadership. This is an experience like no other. For example, no other seminar is based on a story about penguins!

So why use the Iceberg story as the basis for this change experience?

Since its publication in 1996, the best-selling book Leading Change by John P. Kotter has been recognized world-wide as providing the definitive road map for transformational change. But most managers and corporate leaders have little time for in-depth reading. What was needed was a quick read that commanded attention and generated action – a brief, compelling story that would lift the mechanics of change from a business-as-usual mind set and set it within the range of any reader’s imagination. Enter Our Iceberg Is Melting! by John Kotter and co-author Holger Rathgeber, a book which puts the eight vital steps of successful change within the reader’s grasp in the form of a simple, funny, and endearing fable about penguins stranded on a melting iceberg.

When people read the story, it makes them smile. More importantly, it makes them nod their heads in recognition of its application to where they work. It’s effective, it’s enjoyable, and it’s instantaneous. The power of the penguin story is its ability to engage people quickly by reducing complicated ideas about corporate change to a simple and enjoyable language.

A PROVEN METHODOLOGY The Leading Bold Change™ workshop is based on this clever story about penguins because it has the power to engage the minds and hearts of people. The use of the penguin metaphor provides simple shorthand for complicated concepts. It promotes fun (one of the keys to adult learning), dispels the burden of learning, and makes the integration of principles effortless and automatic. Guess what? It also turns out that fun helps alleviate a great deal of resistance to change.

LEADING BOLD CHANGE™ PROCESS 8 STEPS OF LEADING CHANGE Step 1: Acting with urgency Step 2: Developing the guiding coalition Step 3: Developing a change vision Step 4: Communicating the vision buy-in Step 5: Empowering broad-based action Step 6: Generating short-term wins Step 7: Don’t let up Step 8: Make change stick

Thirty years of research by leadership guru Dr. John Kotter has proven that 70% of all major change efforts in organizations fail. Why do they fail? Because organizations often do not take the holistic approach required to see the change through. However, by following the 8 Step Process provided by Professor Kotter, organizations can avoid failure and become adept at change. By improving their ability to change, organizations can increase their chances of success, both today and in the future. Without this ability to adapt continuously, organizations cannot thrive. Dr. Kotter has proven over his years of research that following this 8 Step Process will help organizations succeed in an everchanging world. Create a sense of urgency today and act. Leading Bold Change™ will enhance your success immediately.

“You don’t have to change. Survival is not mandatory.” - W. Edwards Deming

WORKSHOP EXPERIENCE

A PROV MODEL EN LEADER FOR ALL LEVS AT ELS

“The results are building our capability and capacity for organizational change so we can now change quickly and successfully” - Fortune 500 Company

The experience connects the heart of those who must embrace and lead change today with the mindset necessary to ensure future success. This is the workshop to create leaders at all levels capable of identifying and creating change.

WORKSHOP PROCESS Participants work in teams and learn the 8 Step change model backwards and forwards. These teams create presentations that show the links between the steps and illustrate with examples. The process starts with pre-work. This includes reading the book and completing an online assignment that forces participants to consider a real change effort they can or will be involved in. The importance of this step cannot be overstated. The workshop experience involves individual reflection, group

processing, and individual and team-based decision making. Because of the strong impact of visual stimuli in helping the brain to process and remember concepts and ideas, graphic representations are emphasized both in classroom décor, and while envisioning the change effort. Next, participants conduct a macro-level exploration of change and how it affects their organization. From this vantage point, the need to embrace and lead change is reinforced. Finally, macro level changes are seen

to contribute to “fissures” that indicate a need for change at all levels within the organization. With a need for change at all levels, the context is set for developing leaders at all levels. Interestingly, participants agree that the Antarctic penguins from the story tend to have many similarities to human beings in their own organizations – especially as it relates to their reaction to change. The workshop leverages the iceberg metaphor when needed to help participants get past frequently uncomfortable issues.

“Thank you for the brilliant job you did for us at Boca! You are exceptionally skillful at conveying a powerful leadership message” - R. J. Herson, President, EF
