ST KILDA IS ONE OF THE MOST ACTIVE, VIBRANT BAY-SIDE REGION OF MELBOURNE KNOWN FOR ITS RICH CULTURAL HERITAGE. ST KILDA TRIANGLE IS AT THE HEART THE REGION, HOLDING THE POTENTIAL TO BIND TOGETHER THE ENERGY AND SPIRIT OF THE COMMUNITY. THE ST KILDA TRIANGLE DEVELOPMENT STRIVES TO BE A PLACE FOR CULTURAL PRODUCTION AND ENTERTAINMENT DESTINATION FOR THE PEOPLE.

CATANI GARDENS WHEN I HAD TO DESIGN A MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART AND CRAFT FOR ST KILDA MY MASSING STUDIES WERE MORE INCLINED TOWARDS REFERENCING FORMS AND SYMBOLS FROM THE PROMINENT LANDMARKS IN ST KILDA. SUCH AS THE ARCH OF THE PALAIS THEATRE, THE STRUCTURAL ROLLERCOASTER CHARACTER OF THE LUNA PARK AND THE FREE-FLOWING CURVES OF THE CATANI GARDENS. SO, THE FORM OF THE BUILT LANDSCAPE EMBODIES A DESIGN LANGUAGE THAT AMALGAMATES AND MARRIES THESE FEATURES OF THESE 3 PROMINENT LANDMARKS.

5 SO, THE RESULT IS A SCULPTED FORM GESTURING THE ARCH OF THE PALAIS THEATRE, THE CURVES OF THE CATANI GARDEN, AND THE STRUCTURAL FRAMEWORK OF THE LUNA PARK.

THE FACADE AT THE DONOVAN’S CORNER MARKS THE MAIN ENTRANCE OF THE MUSEUM SPACE CREATING A STRONG IDENTIFY FOR ITSELF WITHOUT CONFLICTING OR DOMINATING THE HERITAGE VALUE OF THE PALAIS THEATRE FROM THE ESPLANADE. THE FORM GESTURES THE STRUCTURAL FRAMEWORK OF THE LUNA PARK FORMING THE ENTRANCE TICKET LOBBY AND CONTINUING AS A CEILING FOR THE INTERIOR SPACES.
HERE SPATIAL PLANNING TRIES TO CREATE LOGICAL CONNECTIONS ACROSS THE SITE CONNECTING PROGRAMS TOGETHER AND AMPLIFYING THE OPPORTUNITIES TO DRAW IN PEOPLE TO THE VARIOUS ACTIVITIES ON SITE BY VISUALLY CONNECTING THEM. SO, THE ON THE SURFACE WHAT WE GET IS A PUBLIC PLACE WHICH IS AN EXTENSION OF THE ESPLANADE AND IN THE UNDERBELLY, ARE THE MUSEUM ART LIBRARY AND THE ACMI GALLERIES. VIEW FROM NOVOTEL HOTEL BALCONY
SCULPTURE PARK
THE USE OF COPPER CHROME GLOSSY FINISH WITH THE GLASS ON THE FACADE NOT ONLY DEFINES THE EDGE AND PROFILE OF THE FORM BUT ALSO ENHANCES THE VIBRANCE AND LIVELINESS OF THE SPACE, ESPECIALLY WITH LIGHTS DURING THE NIGHT IN THE PERFORMANCE AREAS. AND IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE IN THE SCULPTURE GALLERY WITH REFLECTION BEING AN ART TECHNIQUE BY ITSELF.
VIEW OF PUBLIC SPACE ON THE ROOF
VIEW SHOWING FORECOURT, ENTRANCE TO CAFE STREET, AND AUGUMENTED REALITY ON THE ROOF
THE INDOOR AND OUTDOOR SPACES HAVE A CONTRASTING CHARACTER WITH CURVES ON THE INTERIOR SPACES AND THE PIXELATED SURFACES ON THE OUTDOOR AREAS CREATING A SYMBIOTIC RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE GEOMETRY. FEW OF THE PIXELS EXTRUDES AND FORMS UP AS POTENTIAL PLANTER BOXES TO PROVIDE NATURAL SHADING AND SEATING AREAS ON THE PUBLIC SPACE. THESE EXTRUSIONS ALSO EMPLOY THE USE OF TECHNOLOGY BY HOUSING SOLATUBES, WHICH CONVERGES AND STORES SOLAR ENERGY AND REDIRECTS THE LIGHT INTO INTERIOR SPACES AS STUDIO LIGHTING.
AS TECHNOLOGY HAS REVOLUTIONISED AND PRODUCED NEW WAYS TO DRAW PEOPLE TO ART THE ARCHITECTURE MUST BE FUTURE READY. HENCE THE OUTDOOR SPACES ALSO DOUBLE AS A VIRTUAL GALLERY CURATED BY ONLINE PLATFORM FOR THE PUBLIC TO ALSO CONTRIBUTE AND BE A PART OF THE ART COMMUNITY FULFILLING THE OBJECTIVE TO BE CENTRE OF CULTURAL PRODUCTION.

THE SPACE ADJOINING THE PALAIS THEATRE HAS A TENSILE CANOPY THAT CONTINUES THE BARREL VAULT OF THE THEATRE TO HOUSE A CAFE STREET WHICH CREATES ADDITIONAL CONNECTIONS ACROSS THE SITE AND COMPLEMENTS THE ACTIVITY OF THE PALAIS THEATRE. THE VERTICAL PLANE ON THE SIDE OF THE PALAIS THEATRE SERVES AS A POSTER BOARD FOR THE PALAIS THEATRE.
THE COURTYARDS HAVE PERFORMANCE SPACES, DESIGNER MARKET AND SCULPTURE GARDENS THAT ARE INTERCONNECTED THROUGH TICKET COUNTERS AND ENTRANCES TO THE INDOOR SPACES WHICH TEASES AND PROVIDES THE OPPORTUNITY FOR THE USERS TO VISIT THESE SPACES. THE GLAZED CURVED FACADE OF THE INDOOR SPACES MAKES UP THE CORRIDOR SPACES FOR THE GALLERIES. SO, AS U WALK IN IT OFFERS A GLIMPSE OF THE ACTIVITIES IN THE COURTYARD BEFORE ENTERING THE GALLERY.

CONCEPT STATEMENT
HOOGLY RIVER
When a Hotel design calls for an iconic structure , Should the aesthetics trade off the functionality, compromising on the best orientation and visual comfort? Should the high end user be the one who gets to enjoy all the benefits?
Come Sail Away.
The objective of the design is to enable the iconic design to drive the functionality of the tower achieving best views and room orientation for all its guests.

The Rising demand for accomodation in urban areas are counteracted with Mulltistorey apartment buildings. But the direction of the building sector not only impacts the potential green space the site offers, but also has a psychological impact on it’s residents. Is there a solution that can solve the above problem, at the same time satisfy the demand for housing in such urban areas?

Every site area has a potential area for softscape. To counteract this, the Idealogy was to achieve a design, compensating the potential green spaces occupied by the built form both vertically and horizontally, which not only reduces the urban heat effect but also enhances the quality of living and interaction among the residents.

THE COURTYARDS BRING IMPORTANT AHU MOMENTS IN THE BUILDING AS ALL THE INTERNAL ROOM MOVEMENT BETWEEN THE DEPARTMENTS HAPPEN THROUGH STAIRS OVERLOOKING THE COURTYARDS. THE 30 SEATER CONFERENCE ARRANGEMENT OF THE STAIRCASE ENABLES THE ROOM USERS TO HAVE A VISUAL CONNECTION WITH THE SPACES INSIDE AND ALSO WITH MOVEMENT HAPPENING THROUGH THE STAIRS. THESE STAIRCASES OVERLOOKING THE COURTYARD BRINGS IN MORE FLUIDITY BETWEEN DIFFERENT DEPARTMENTS IN TERMS OF MOVEMENT.

‘New Van Bhavan’ is an office complex for the state government of madhya pradesh - Department of Forest. It comprises of 4 main departments. The design had to accommodate all space requirements as per the hierarchy of the working staff and their occupational relationship, with a non traditional appeal, which will make it stand out.

THE FACADE HAS TO BE FLUIDIC SO AS TO RESPOND TO AN ORGANIC FORM WHERE THE BOUNDARIES BETWEEN DIFFERENT PROGRAMMES ARE MERGED WITH INTERNAL CONNECTIVITY THROUGH COURTYARDS AND THE CORRIDORS FLOWING THROUGHOUT THE BUILDING.
THE FOUR DEPARTMENTS ARE FUNCTIONALLY INDEPENDENT, BUT LOOSELY INTEGRATED BY A NETWORK OF PATHS AND GREEN. THE EXTERIOR FACADE RESPONDS TO THE FLUIDITY OF THE PROGRAMME WITH THREE DIFFERENT TRANSPARENCIES, THAT IS GLASS, LOUVERS AND OPAQUE SURFACES-WALLS.

MODEL MAKING
MODEL DESCRIPTION: The idea of the canopy is to create a form that is a fluid tesselated surface derived from a domical shell, that flows from the roof to the floor anchoring at a single point on the ground. The form of the canopy is influenced by the use of digital tools like ladybug and karamba which helped optimise the form and surface area required to optimise shading during summer solistice. openings are provide in the panels and they are in response to the orientation and exposure to solar radiation. The assembly of the structure follows the idea of superimposing 2 layers of the same structure as folded plates in 2 opposite axes, that is horizontal ad vertical. the laser cut cardbboard vertical strips , forms the outer layer while a thinner horizontal membrane on the interior is superimposed over the outer membrane on the interior side to hold and perform as a single structure.
