YOUR GUIDE TO REYKJAVÍK, ICELAND
THE WORLD’S MOST NORTHERLY CAPITAL is home to outstanding art galleries, a creative culinary scene and spectacular natural beauty, not to mention thrilling Viking history. The city is clean, green, compact and bathed in 24-hour sunlight during the summer months. Plus, lava fields, majestic waterfalls and spouting geysers are just a day trip away.
TOP THINGS TO SEE & DO
SOAK IN THE BLUE LAGOON: Nestled in the rugged lava fields of the Reykjanes Peninsula, the mineral-rich waters of this famous geothermal pool are said to be the nation’s health and beauty secret.
HALLGRÍMSKIRKJA: An immense white concrete church which dominates Reykjavik’s skyline. Standing at 74.5 metres, it is visible from up to 20 kilometres away and is home to a 5275-pipe organ. An elevator trip up the tower reveals an unmissable view of the city.
SAMPLE ICELANDIC CUISINE: Hákarl (fermented shark meat). Seafood stews. Rúgbrauð (dense, moist rye bread). Smoked lamb. Skyr (fresh sour milk cheese). Poached lobster. Brennivín (unsweetened schnapps). The cuisine is unique and inventive — as are the restaurants that serve it.
KOLAPORTIÐ: Iceland’s only flea market, which takes place on weekends (indoors) close to Reykjavík’s harbour. Goods sold include second-hand records, liquorice and other local delicacies.
THE SUN VOYAGER: A famous sculpture by Jón Gunnar Árnason, intended to convey the promise of undiscovered territory, a dream of hope, progress and freedom.
