The heart of the energy production is located in the former building of the Silos. It is supplied with renewable energy sources so as to produce central heating, hot water or even electricity for the immediate neighbourhood. The main aim is to create an invisible and sustainable first layer to generate an efficient, comfortable and attractive environment. In this way, the neighbourhood, currently over 40% deserted, may be repopulated.

The second layer is about urban linkers. It consists of a sequence of iconic elements connected together. They not only solve the functional connection problem between different areas of the city, but also activate the neighbourhood providing a new urban program.

The Bread Factory Complex was certainly a cornerstone of the Vigo´s industrial development. The Silos´s iconic outline brings back melancholic and proud memories of a dynamic and prosperous city which would be worthwhile to highlight. The value and beauty of functionality, together with the current situation of efficiency and energy saving, take us to attempt to provide the Bread Factory Complex with a profitable second life: a life as an urban energy factory. In the words of Aldo Rossi, “a propelling element”.

Consequently, the design is based on two concepts: energy production and urban linkers. We propose the insertion of a set of 8 architectural elements, each one with a double function: as support of the energetic infrastructure and as an urban linker. To sum up, the proposal hopes to build a sustainable neighbourhood in both an environmental and economical way. In a sense, It makes a profit (energy) to guarantee its own future in addition to invest in the common good.
