Dear Reader, The holiday season is part of our year-round planning. Whether we’re thinking about gifts of interest, stocking up on popular favorites, planning displays, or thinking about recommendations, we’re keeping the holidays in focus. For us, it’s like senior prom, the World Series, and planning a wedding all at the same time. But more than anything, it’s a celebration. We’re celebrating being with friends and family. We’re celebrating the end of a busy year. And we’re celebrating the community that has supported us throughout the year. And with all of that celebration is of course gratitude. From our hardworking staff to our devoted customers, our local vendors and our Fairhaven and Lynden neighbors, we’re grateful for all of the ways we’ve connected with each other throughout the year. So here is our chance to say thank you and we wouldn’t be here without you Dear Reader.

Building Community One Book at a Time
2023 Village Books
Literary Citizenship Award On the evening of October 18th, Village Books invited members of the community to recognize and celebrate the recipients of the 2023 Village Books Literary Citizenship Award: Rena Priest, Joan Airoldi (1946-2022), and Laurel Leigh Erdoiza (1963-2023). These three talented and dedicated community builders, community mentors, and community defenders each demonstrated the virtues that embody a Good Literary Citizen. For this, each winner—or a charity selected by their family—was awarded $1000 and all three were inducted into the Village Books Literary Citizen Hall of Fame which will be on permanent display in Village Books, Fairhaven. "We're so thankful to be in a community overflowing with Good Literary Citizens. This inaugural celebration is just the beginning of what we intend to be an annual celebration of those who give so much of themselves," says Paul Hanson. Village Books co-owners Paul Hanson and Sarah Hutton were joined by award recipient Rena Priest and the family and friends of Joan Airoldi and Laurel Leigh Erdoiza.

HOLIDAYS Shopping with Kelly
No matter what holiday you celebrate, this is the season for family and friends. And when we gather, we always enjoy dining together. Setting a table for celebrationscan be just as fun as the event itself! Candles are always a must on dark days, and good food and drink will see us all through the cold months. A few of my favorite items this season are as beautiful and colorful as they are useful.
Lynn & Liana Designs is a family business based out of Steinbach, Manitoba, Canada. "We were inspired to go into business when we came across a fabulous new resin product, made by our friends at EcoPoxy. Their new product, UVPoxy, is a plant-based resin made with recycled bioproducts. When we saw how incredibly beautiful the resin was, we wanted to create something new and special with it. So, we combined the eco-friendly resin with gorgeous hardwoods and our line of cheese boards and serving trays was born!” – Melissa Funk, CMO & Owner Their items are one of a kind, hand-poured, meticulously crafted individual works of art. There are no two items the same. They make for a beautiful charcuterie spread and great conversation pieces at dinner parties. When you’re not serving from them, they add a beautiful pop of color to your home décor. Best of all, a portion of their sales go toward the replanting of trees across North America.
Totally Bamboo is a family-owned company in San Marcos, California. They have many awesome kitchen items, including the always favorite bamboo Washington State cutting board. But this year I’m looking forward to giving gifts from their Marrakesh Collection. This collection brings a splash of color to your kitchen and dining event with Baltique® colored birch utensils. Each utensil is made of finely crafted birch wood, assembled in durable layers. These strong utensils are safe to use on nonstick pots and pans! Inspired by the bright and bustling marketplaces of the Moroccan metropolis of Marrakesh, this collection features an attention-grabbing array of colors in red, blue, and green. The grand serving spoon is a particular favorite—perfect for getting into the corners of the pie pan. I hope you have a lovely holiday season full of bright colors, lively music, and good friends.

Building Community One Book at a Time
New Fiction Cold Victory by Karl Marlantes
available in January, hardcover, Grove Press
Helsinki, 1947. Finland teeters between the Soviet Union and the West. Everyone is being watched. A wrong look or a wrong word could end in catastrophe. Natalya Bobrova, from Russia, and Louise Koski, from the United States, are young wives of their country’s military attachés. When they meet at an embassy party, their husbands, Arnie and Mikhail, both world-class skiers, drunkenly challenge each other to a friendly—but secret—cross-country wilderness race.
Bright Young Women by Jessica Knoll
available in September, hardcover, Simon & Schuster
A very needed perspective of a true-crime case where the murderer is not in the spotlight and we learn the background of many other characters. The book focuses on a series of characters and their lives during the late ‘70s. We learn later that they are victims of Ted Bundy, an interesting take on a story we have heard too many times. –Maddie
Shield Maiden
The Liberators
available now, hardcover, Redhook
available in November, hardcover, Tin House
All her life, Fryda has longed to be a shield maiden, an honor reserved for Geatland’s mightiest warriors. When a childhood accident leaves her injured and unfit for the battlefield, her dreams are dashed. However, when foreign lords and chieftains descend upon Geatland to celebrate her uncle King Beowulf’s 50-year reign, she realizes not all their guests come with good intentions. Treachery is afoot, and Fryda must gather her courage to fight for her people—as a shield maiden would—and as only Fryda can.
At the height of the military dictatorship in South Korea, Insuk and Sungho are arranged to be married. The couple soon moves to San Jose, California, with an infant and Sungho’s overbearing mother-in-law. Adrift in a new country, Insuk grieves the loss of her past and her divided homeland, finding herself drawn into an illicit relationship that sets into motion a dramatic saga and echoes for generations to come.
One Woman Show
by Alan Garner
by Sharon Emmerichs
by Christine Coulson
available now, hardcover, Avid Reader Press
Author Christine Coulson spent years writing for the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Her final project was to write wall labels for the museum’s new British Galleries. During that time, she dreamt of using The Met’s strict label format to describe people as intricate works of art. The result is this bullet of a novel that imagines a privileged twentieth-century woman as an artifact—an object prized, collected, and critiqued. Coulson precisely distills each stage of this sprawling life, every brief snapshot in time a wry reflection on womanhood, ownership, value, and power.

Treacle Walker available in November, hardcover, Scribner
This little book has a language, cadence, and aura about it I've not experienced before. "Gauzy" is the word that keeps running through my head. The experience of it was not unlike reading books by Philip Pullman or China Miéville. If you enjoy less traditional storytelling like I do, it is a must read. –Erin
The Paleontologist by Luke Dumas
available now, hardcover, Atria
Curator of paleontology Dr. Simon Nealy never expected to return to his Pennsylvania hometown, let alone the Hawthorne Museum of Natural History. He was just a boy when his six-year-old sister, Morgan, was abducted from the museum under his watch. But from the moment he arrives, things aren’t what he expected. The Hawthorne is a crumbling ruin, still closed amid the ongoing pandemic, and plummeting toward financial catastrophe. Worse, Simon begins seeing and hearing things he can’t explain.

New Fiction available in January, hardcover, Henry Holt & Company
This funny, heartwarming, generationspanning tale of family, love, adoption, and parenthood is a must read. Told from multiple perspectives, it sucks you in right away and just doesn’t let go! I I love the nuanced exploration of adoption and what makes a family. If you liked This is How It Always Is, I encourage you to add this one to your TBR list, as Frankel once again tackles a complicated topic with tenderness and sharp insight. –Hanna
A True Account: Hannah
Masury's Sojurn Amongst the Pyrates, Written by Herself
by Katherine Howe
available in November, hardcover, Henry Holt
In Boston, as the Golden Age of Piracy comes to a bloody close, Hannah Masury is ready to take her life into her own hands. When a man is hanged for piracy in the town square and whispers of a treasure in the Caribbean spread, Hannah is forced to flee for her life, disguising herself as a cabin boy in the crew of the notorious pirate Edward Low. Meanwhile in 1930, professor Marian Beresford pieces Hannah's story together- seeing her own lack of freedom reflected back at her as she watches Hannah's transformation. At the center of Hannah Masury's account, however, lies a centuries-old mystery that Marian is determined to solve, just as Hannah may have been determined to take it to her grave.

Day
by Michael Cunningham available in November, hardcover, Random House
I recall being stunned by Cunningham's book, The Hours, and again I am floored— this time by Day. One single day, April 5, a snapshot of 2019, then 2020, then 2021. This isn't a book about facemasks. This is a story about love, family, isolation, finding yourself, and losing yourself. While all the characters are engaging, I was struck by the voices of Robbie and little 5-year old Violet. Their disparate perspectives made this novel thoughtful, sweet, and ultimately, satisfying. –Erin

Fiction & Romance The Second Sight of Zachary Cloudesley
The River We Remember by William Kent Kreuger
by Sean Lusk
available now, hardcover, Simon & Schuster
available in December, paperback, Union Square & Co
I loved the way that this book found importance in the smaller things and you get to really know the characters on a deeper level. Definitely a slow burn but I thought the pace was perfect for the story that was unfolding. If you are a fan of Snow Falling On Cedars, this has that same small-town interconnected feel. –Maddie
A sparkling historical novel of wild and wonderful mechanical automata, love in a variety of forms, and gentle themes of identity, with a cast of fabulous characters. In 1755, Abel Cloudesley, a London watchmaker and creator of remarkable mechanical automata, is mourning his wife, Alice, who died giving birth to their son, Zachary. Abel is further devastated when a freak workshop accident takes Zachary’s eye. With his new eye made of gold and lapis Zachary, now with an astonishing gift of second sight, is sent to live with his eccentric Aunt Franny in the country. There, Abel is coerced by shadowy figures into designing a chess-playing automaton and delivering it to Constantinople to spy on the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire.
Romance Raiders of the Lost Heart by Jo Segura
available in December, paperback, Berkley
It’s been Corrie’s life goal to lead an expedition into the Mexican jungle in search of the longlost remains of her ancestor, an ancient Aztec warrior. As a world-renowned expert, Corrie should be leading the expedition, not sharing the glory with her disgustingly handsome nemesis, Dr. Ford Matthews. And he certainly isn’t thrilled either—with everything going on in his life right now, the last thing he needs is a reminder of their rocky past.
Fantasy Romance
Night Watch
by Jayne Anne Phillips available now, hardcover, Knopf
Phillips is a gifted storyteller, and this Civil War-era novel opens with the harsh reality that when the war ends, the trauma doesn't. Told from different perspectives for context, we learn about ConaLee's family, and her new reality of life in a lunatic asylum with her mother, who has stopped speaking, and, in a larger sense, stopped connecting with the world. From there, new characters emerge from the shadows of the asylum. This was longlisted for the National Book Award in September. –Erin

Let Us Descend by Jesmyn Ward
available now, hardcover, Scribner
Annis, sold south by the white enslaver who fathered her, is the reader’s guide. As she struggles through the miles-long march from the rice fields of the Carolinas to the slave markets of New Orleans, Annis turns inward, seeking comfort from memories of her mother and stories of her African warrior grandmother. Throughout, she opens herself to a world beyond this world, one teeming with spirits: of earth and water, of myth and history; spirits who nurture and give, and those who manipulate and take.

New Fiction Before We Say Goodbye
Come and Get It
by Toshikazu Kawaguchi, translated by Geoffrey Trousselot
by Kiley Reid
available in January, hardcover, G.P. Putnam's Sons
In her second novel, Reid again shows off just how well she does character. The meticulous attention to detail that draws you in is ever present as you get to know Agatha, the cool lesbian professor/writer, Millie, the focused, perfectionist RA, and Kennedy, the lonely transfer student with a secret. Reid explores themes of money and privilege, race, campus life, and bad choices in her usual compelling style. –Hanna
The Scandalous Confessions of Lydia Bennet, Witch
by Sarah Blakley-Cartwright available in November, hardcover, Simon & Schuster
available now, hardcover, Grand Central
In this exuberant retelling of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, Lydia Bennet puts pen to paper to relate the real events and aftermath of the classic story. Lydia also suffers from entirely different concerns: her best-loved sister Kitty is really a barn cat; Wickham is every bit as wicked as the world believes him to be, but what else would one expect from a demon? And if Mr. Darcy is uptight about etiquette, that’s nothing compared to his feelings about magic.
Interesting Facts About Space
This book follows the wonderful trio that is Alice, Sadie, and Celine in a Messy triangle as they stumble through life together, it has the same feeling as an accident or train wreck where it's hard to look away. I found it so hard to put down and finished it in just a couple of sittings. –Maddie
The Djinn Waits a Hundred Years by Shubnum Khan
available in January, hardcover, Viking
by Emily Austin
available in January, hardcover, Atria Books
I must inform you- this is already my favorite book of the year. Emily Austin is such a fantastic storyteller. Our protagonist is a neurotic, true crime-obsessed lesbian with an irrational fear of bald men who believes someone may be stalking her. If that alone isn't enough to convince you to buy this, I'll say this: it's funny, earnest, perfectly paced, and I already can't wait to read it again. –Hanna

In Northern Sámi, the word Ædnan means the land, the earth, and my mother. These are all crucial forces within the lives of the Indigenous families that animate this groundbreaking book: an astonishing verse novel that chronicles a hundred years of change: a book that will one day stand alongside Halldór Laxness’s Independent People and Sigrid Undset’s Kristin Lavransdatter as an essential Scandinavian epic.

Fantasy & Science Fiction The Future
Ocean's Echo
available in November, hardcover, Simon & Schuster
available now, paperback, Bramble

This was a nail biter, page turner, and heart racer of a read. It felt reminiscent of The Circle with the enigmatic characters and future tech thriller vibe. This will be a great novel to settle down with on a rainy day. –Kiana
House of Sky and Breath
by Everina Maxwell One of the most creative premises I’ve read in a sci-fi book for quite some time! It centers on two groups of people called Readers and Architects, and the consequences they face due to their telekinetic/telepathic powers. This wonderfully constructed story somehow strikes the perfect balance between action-packed military space opera and adorable slow burn romance, so if you're interested in either of those genres this is definitely for you! –Allison
(Crescent City #2): by Sarah J. Maas

In this action-packed sequel to House of Earth and Blood, Bryce and her friends must navigate the increasingly dangerous world of Crescent City and the politics at play as they are faced with the difficult choice of keeping quiet and staying comfortable, or risking everything to fight for what they believe in. Sexy, fun, and filled with twists and turns, Sarah J. Maas never disappoints. –Anne

This is a low-stakes fantasy that delivers exactly what's advertised: a wholesome, cozy novel that feels like a warm hug. Starling House by Alix E Harrow
available now, hardcover, Tor
Starling House is a gothic fantasy novel by bestselling author Alix E. Harrow (Ten Thousand Doors of January) set in a small town in Kentucky. A town that is dying. A town full of bad luck and many secrets. Some say the town is cursed. Opal gives up everything to raise her little brother after the death of her mother. Her only goal is to give her brother a chance at a good life by getting him out of Eden. As Opal wades through the varied stories about Starling House and its first resident, E. Starling, she is given hope that she could have the means to help her brother when the current resident of the house hires her to work for him. Even though she is warned repeatedly to stay away, Opal is drawn to the haunted house and its secrets, and to Arthur Starling, the current resident. I loved this book. It was just the right amount of spooky without crossing into horror. –Gaye

Science Fiction & Fantasy The Odyssey of Fletcher
The Kingdom of Sweets:
available now, paperback, Edderkoppen Press
by Erika Johansen
by Erik Dargitz
A Novel of the Nutcracker
This is a story about the last man on Earth. A story as old as time, but offered up in such an amusing, absurd way, I could not stop turning the pages. Fletcher is definitely not the hero we want, and probably also not the one we deserve, but his story is told in such a genuine way, you can't help but like him. He makes so many absolutely human mistakes, kind of learns from them, and then makes more. Overall a satisfying, fun, light read. Erik Dargitz is one of our own Bellinghamsters, so let's lend him some support! –Erin

In his debut auto-fiction novel, Jennings beautifully captures the calming chaos of the city that never sleeps. The year is 1742. Goody Brown, saved from drowning and adopted when just a babe, has grown up happily in the smuggling town of Winchelsea. But when she turns 16, her father is murdered by men he thought were friends. “I love all Kate Beaton’s comics and illustrations, from the history-based comic book, Hark! A serious look at the toll it takes to work in Alberta’s oil sands and the environmental and human destruction it has wrought." –Laura

How to Sell A Haunted House
by Delphine de Vigan translated by Alison Anderson
by Grady Hendrix
available in November, hardcover, Europa
available in January, paperback, Penguin
As the influencer generation takes hold, the dangerous effects of social media are beginning to be discussed. De Vigan unflinchingly questions the unregulated trend of parents posting their children online, and begs readers to think about the ethics in this new form of child labor. Although fiction, this thriller proposes an all too real reality that will stay with you long after you finish. –Kiana
This book felt like a fever dream but in all the best ways—my favorite that Hendrix has written so far. There were lots of twists and turns which always makes a good thriller plus not as much guts/gore as his other books which I found refreshing. Coming soon in paperback! –Maddie

by Alex Michaelides available in January, hardcover, Celadon Books
This story has so many windy twists and turns you may want to take a Dramamine before reading. Michaelides is quickly becoming a master in suspense and this newest one does not disappoint. The beautiful location makes the perfect unsettling background for this shady group of friends, all of whom are hiding something. I cannot count the amount of times my jaw dropped. –Kiana

History Great-Uncle Harry: A Tale of War and Empire
Blood Memory:
by Michael Palin
available now, hardcover, Random House Canada
A stash of family records was handed down to Michael Palin, among which were photos of a young man in army uniform. This was his hitherto unknown Great-Uncle Harry, whose life was cut short at the age of 32 when he was killed in the Battle of the Somme. The discovery both shocked him and made him want to know much more. The quest that followed involved hundreds of hours of painstaking detective work. As he read family correspondence and his Great-Uncle’s diary, a life that had previously existed in the shadows was revealed to him.
In the Shadow of Quetzalcoatl:
The Tragic Decline and Improbable Resurrection of the American Buffalo
by Dayton Duncan, Ken Burns available now, hardcover, Knopf
Newcomers to the continent found the buffalo fascinating at first, but in time they came to consider them a hindrance to expansion. In the space of only a decade, they were slaughtered by the millions for their hides, with their carcasses left to rot on the prairies. Then, teetering on the brink of disappearing from the face of the earth, they would be rescued by a motley collection of Americans, each of them driven by different—and sometimes competing—impulses.
The Book at War:
How Reading Shaped Conflict and How Conflict Shaped Reading
Zelia Nuttall and the Search for Mexico’s Ancient Civilizations
by Andrew Pettegree
by Merilee Grindle
available in December, hardcover, Basic Books
available in November, hardcover, Belknap Press
Where do human societies come from? The drive to answer this question took on a new urgency in the nineteenth century, when a generation of archaeologists began to look beyond the bible for different origins. A child of the San Francisco Gold Rush whose mother was born in Mexico City, Zelia Nuttall threw herself into the study of Aztec customs and cosmology, using the tools of the emerging science of anthropology to prove that modern Mexico was built over the ruins of ancient civilizations. This first biography of Zelia Nuttall captures the appeal and contradictions that riddled the life of this trailblazing woman.
The Book at War explores the various roles that books have played in conflicts throughout the globe. Winston Churchill used a travel guide to plan the invasion of Norway, lonely families turned to libraries while their loved ones were fighting in the trenches, and during the Cold War both sides used books to spread their visions of how the world should be run. As solace or instruction manual, as critique or propaganda, books have shaped modern military history—for both good and ill.
Literature The Sisterhood: How a Network of Black Women Writers Changed American Culture by Courtney Thorsson
available now, hardcover, Columbia University Press
In February 1977, Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, Ntozake Shange, and several other Black women writers met at June Jordan’s Brooklyn apartment to eat gumbo, drink champagne, and talk about their work. Calling themselves “The Sisterhood,” the group—which also came to include Audre Lorde, Paule Marshall, Margo Jefferson, and others—would get together once a month over the next two years, creating a vital space for Black women to discuss literature and liberation. Drawing on original interviews as well as correspondence, meeting minutes, and readings of their works, Thorsson explores the group’s everyday collaboration and profound legacy. The Sisterhood advocated for Black women writers at trade publishers and magazines such as Random House, Ms., and Essence, and eventually in academic departments as well—often in the face of sexist, racist, and homophobic backlash.

Biographies & Memoirs Fierce Ambition: The Life and Legend of War Correspondent Maggie Higgins by Jennet Conant
available now, hardcover, W.W. Norton
Higgins was both the scourge and envy of the journalistic world. She first catapulted to fame with her dramatic account of the liberation of Dachau at the end of World War II. She forced her way to the front despite being told the combat zone was no place for a woman. Her headline-making exploits earned her a reputation for bravery bordering on recklessness and accusations of “advancing on her back.” Drawing on new research, including interviews with Higgins’s colleagues, lovers, and soldiers and generals who knew her in the field, journalist and historian Conant restores Higgins’s rightful place in history as a woman who paved the way for the next generation of journalists.
In the Form of a Question: The Joys and Rewards of a Curious Life by Amy Schneider
available now, hardcover, Avid Reader Press
I’m that kind of Jeopardy! nerd who keeps track of my scores and has read just about every book that talks about the game show or about being a contestant. Schneider’s memoir is great for that reason alone but also because she talks about being an openly trans super-champ, about being an awkward kid who loved the stage, and about being a sort of celebrity-type-person. It’s open, wideranging, and just the right level of nerdy (with footnotes!). –Sarah
Data Baby: My Life in a Psychological Experiment

available in November, hardcover, Legacy Lit
Find more great reads in the 2023 Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association Holiday Catalog!
Uncultured: A Memoir by Daniella Mestyanek Young available in November, paperback, St. Martin's Press
If you loved Educated or The Glass Castle this is the book for you, it follows Daniella throughout her life. She tells us about growing up in a cult known as "The Children of God" as well as how she joined the military to escape the cult but it ended up having similar undertones at times which I found extremely fascinating. –Maddie
When Breslin is a toddler, her parents enroll her in an exclusive laboratory preschool at UC Berkeley, where she becomes one of over a hundred children who are research subjects in an unprecedented 30-year study of personality development. Decades later, trapped in what she feels is an abusive marriage and battling cancer, she starts to wonder how growing up under a microscope shaped her identity and life choices. Already a successful journalist, she makes her own curious history the subject of her next investigation. From experiment rooms with one-way mirrors, to children’s puzzles with no solutions, to condemned basement laboratories, her journey uncovers the long-buried secrets hidden behind the renowned study.
Class: A Memoir of
The Race to Be Myself
Motherhood, Hunger, and Higher Education
hardcover, available now, W.W. Norton
available now, hardcover, Atriar
Thrust into the spotlight at just 18 years old after winning the Berlin World Championships in 2009, Semenya’s win was quickly overshadowed by criticism and speculation about her body, and she became the center of a still-raging firestorm about how gender plays out in sports, our expectations of female athletes, and the right to compete as you are. Told with captivating speed and candor, The Race to Be Myself is the journey of Semenya’s years as an athlete in the public eye, and her life behind closed doors.
Land takes us on another inspiring journey of hardship and motherhood. The book follows her whereabouts where Maid leaves off and starts as she moves to Montana to pursue her degree but truly can never catch a break. This book will have you rooting for her from cover to cover. –Maddie

The Storyteller:
Music That Changed My Life and Life That Changed My Music
Tales of Life and Music
by Jeff Tweedy
by Dave Grohl

available now, paperback, Dey Street Books
Jeff Tweedy is back with another disarming, beautiful, and inspirational book about why we listen to music, why we love songs, and how music can connect us to each other and to ourselves. Featuring 50-plus songs that have both changed Tweedy's life and influenced his music—including songs by The Replacements, Mavis Staples, the Velvet Underground, Joni Mitchell, Otis Redding, Dolly Parton, and Billie Eilish.
I will never not recommend this book. Grohl's memoir is not only for fans of music, Nirvana, or rock. His memoir is for those who value family, life, and love. A collection of stories that spans from his childhood into his adult life with his own wife and kids, this book hits every note from humor to tragedy. I laughed, I cried, and I fell in love with the man that has no bounds when it comes to sharing his passion for music & joy with the world. –Laura M.

Becoming Ella Fitzgerald: The Jazz Singer Who Transformed American Song
by Judith Tick
available in December, hardcover, W.W. Norton
In this first major biography since Fitzgerald’s death, historian Tick offers a sublime portrait of this ambitious risk-taker whose exceptional musical spontaneity made her a transformational artist. Touching on her childhood, her first choir performances, her first appearance at the Apollo, and other musical touchstones, this spans decades of Fitzgerald’s work. Rarely seen profiles from the Black press offer precious glimpses of Fitzgerald’s tense experiences of racial discrimination and her struggles with constricting models of Black and white femininity at midcentury.

and 24 Avian Lives
Trouble and Kinship with our Wild Neighbors
by Mark E. Hauber, illustrated by Tony Angell
by Erika Howsare
available in November, hardcover, University of Chicago Press
available in January, hardcover, Catapult
I was raised in Washington and have always been around deer, yet have never bothered to read up on the curious creatures. This book was the perfect blend of history, folktales, science, and environmental concerns surrounding deer. I highly recommend this to anyone who has found themselves shaking their fist at a pesky deer who has eaten their tomatoes. –Kiana
Mountaineering
In this short book, ornithologist Hauber shows readers exactly how birds spend their time. Each chapter covers a single bird during a single hour, highlighting 24 different bird species from around the globe, from the tropics through the temperate zones to the polar regions. Award-winning artist Angell has depicted these scenes with his signature pen and ink illustrations. Working closely together to narrate and illustrate these unique moments in time, Hauber and Angell have created an engaging read that is a perfect way to spend an hour or two—and a true gift for readers, amateur scientists, and birdwatchers.

Nature & Science Mischievous Creatures:
A City on Mars: Can We
The Forgotten Sisters Who Transformed Early American Science
Settle Space, Should We Settle Space, and Have We Really Thought This Through?
by Catherine McNeur
by Kelly and Zach Weinersmith
available now, hardcover, Basic Books
available in November, hardcover, Penguin Press
In Mischievous Creatures, historian Catherine McNeur uncovers the lives and work of Margaretta Hare Morris and Elizabeth Carrington Morris, sisters and scientists in early America. Margaretta, an entomologist, was famous among her peers and the public for her research on 17-year cicadas and other troublesome insects. Elizabeth, a botanist, was a prolific illustrator and a trusted supplier of specimens to the country’s leading experts. Together, their discoveries helped fuel the growth and professionalization of science in antebellum America.
I have never enjoyed reading about space and science as much as I did with this book! The Weinersmiths debunk missinformation and puzzle out the ethics of living on Mars. The comic illustrations on every page make this a very entertaining read, even through some tricky subjects. –Kiana

How the Ocean Works
by Helen Czerski

Through stories of history, culture, and animals, Czerski explains how water temperature, salinity, gravity, and the movement of Earth’s tectonic plates all interact in a complex dance, supporting life at the smallest scale—plankton—and the largest—giant sea turtles, whales, humankind. From the ancient Polynesians who navigated the Pacific by reading the waves, to permanent residents of the deep such as the Greenland shark that can live for hundreds of years, she introduces the messengers, passengers, and voyagers that rely on interlinked systems of vast currents, invisible ocean walls, and underwater waterfalls.

by Linda Bailey, Illustrated by Natalia Shaloshvili
When a mitten loses her partner and becomes a single mitten, the others don’t feel the need to include her. She doesn’t “match” them, so she is banished to the dark, lonely pocket of the Little Girl who owns them. When the Little Girl, who has been listening to their conversations, weighs in with a huge question (“Why do you have to match?”), the mittens are shocked. Then comes their realization that “matching” often means leaving someone out. This prompts the Little Girl to break a fundamental rule of fashion so that individual mittens (and maybe even socks! or shoes!) can be themselves—and everyone can belong. A warm and fuzzy story with lots of laughs, this latest picture book from Linda Bailey explores what it feels like to be excluded and included and celebrates one-of-a-kindness!

With her knack for making science easy to understand, Temple Grandin explains different types of thinkers: verbal thinkers who are good with language, and visual thinkers who think in pictures and patterns. You will discover all kinds of minds and how we need to work together to create solutions to help solve real-world problems. Ages 8-13.

Middle Readers Alebrijes
by Donna Barba Higuera availabel now, hardcover, Chronicle Books
From Donna Barba Higuera, Newbery and Pura Belpré Medal-winning author of The Last Cuentista, comes another novel to astonish us and create a whole new imaginative world, that holds a mirror to our own. For 400 years, Earth has been a barren wasteland. The few humans that survive scrape together an existence in the cruel city of Pocatel—or go it alone in the wilderness beyond, filled with wandering spirits and wyrms. They don’t last long. 13 year-old pickpocket Leandro and his sister Gabi do what they can to forge a life in Pocatel. When Gabi is caught stealing, Leando takes the fall. But his exile proves more than he ever could have imagined—far from a simple banishment, his consciousness is placed inside an ancient drone and left to fend on its own. But beyond the walls of Pocatel lie other alebrijes like Leandro who seek for a better world—as well as mutant monsters, wasteland pirates, a hidden oasis, and the truth.
Ruptured
by Joanne Rossmassler Fritz available in November, hardcover, Holiday House
I totally recommend this book because of how much the author emphasizes healing over the stereotypical happy ending. The poetic style matched with the emotional intensity in this book really made it easy to feel all the feelings. Claire's story is not an easy one. When hearing it from her perspective, as just a child, it was hard to read at times because Fritz does such a good job of conveying the confusion and hurt that can come with big family changes and medical trauma, especially as a 13-year-old. –Anna
I Survived The Great Alaska Earthquake, 1964 by Lauren Tarshis
available in November, paperback, Scholastic Inc.
It was 1964 in the brand-new state of Alaska, a vast land of staggering beauty and heartstopping dangers. Eleven-year-old Jack had grown up living happily with his parents in an off-the-grid cabin, miles from their closest neighbors. Grizzlies and wolves outnumbered people, and dark winter days were 30 degrees below zero. Jack had always thought of himself as strong — “Alaska tough”. But then the most powerful earthquake in American history —the Good Friday Earthquake —struck.

The Last Cuentista by Donna Barba Higuera
available in January, paperback, Levine Querido,
I read this book for the first time in 2022, and it was my favorite book of the year. In a genre-bending combination of sci-fi and traditional Mexican folklore, Higuera creates a memorable novel appropriate for and aimed towards middle-grade readers that also stands its ground amongst adult fiction. She weaves together a classic space travel concept with incredible love and character growth. –Sophie

It's the winter of 1924 and a diphtheria outbreak is threatening the population of Nome, Alaska. The only way to stop the deadly illness from causing a full-blown epidemic is to immediately deliver one million units of the diphtheria antitoxin to the affected communities, which seems impossible given the only way to reach any place in Alaska at this time of year is by dog sled. The stakes are high, and the snow is piling higher—will the antitoxin make it in time? Or will the infection spread faster than they can treat it? Follow along as Balto and Togo lead the way in this race against time to get the antitoxin and save lives. Ages 8-12.

Gwen & Art Are Not in Love
by Abiola Bello
by Lex Croucher
available now, hardcover, Soho Teen
available in November, hardcover, Wednesday Books
Charming, handsome Trey Anderson balances the pressures of school popularity with a job at his family’s beloved local bookshop, Wonderland. Quirky, creative Ariel Spencer needs tuition for the prestigious art program of her dreams, and an opening at Wonderland is the answer. When Trey and Ariel learn that Wonderland is on the brink of being shut down by a neighborhood gentrifier, they team up to stop the doors from closing before the Christmas Eve deadline—and embark on a hate-to-love journey that will change them forever.
Gwen and Art may not be in love, but you sure will be with this delightfully queer and hilarious medieval-ish romantic comedy. Croucher has taken inspiration from the Arthurian legends of old and mixed it together with the tropes of popular romcoms creating something that resembles the show Merlin if it had actually been queer. If you like diverse and funny historical romps then look no further than this fantastic young adult novel. –Tova

2023 Choices
by Teofilo J. Age: 14 Tech Prep Academy Justice, a dream we all share. Inequality, a heavy load to bear. Filled is the world with bigotry and spite. But we must rise up and do what's right. Some stay back, while others raise their voice. Because every human being must make a choice. We all must stand, we must not fall. For those in despair, we must answer the call. No one should be judged based on their skin. Nor should they because of their gender, religion, or shape they’re in. It’s time to break the wall of inequality and discrimination. It’s time for a world of care, and liberation. Let's strive for peace and unity. We must heal the wounds of discrimination and inequity. It takes a village, so on each other there will be some reliance. Now let's stop discriminating, come on folks, equality isn't rocket science.
