As I (Sarah) am writing this, the three of us owners are returning from a work-related trip where we shared ideas and best practices with some of our bookstore colleagues from across the nation. Sitting around a very robust table, we were all filled with inspiration and ideas to bring home as well as a renewed sense of our work and our mission. It’s sometimes easy to miss the forest for the trees and stepping away for a few days gives us an opportunity to reflect. It also fills us with pride for our store, our staff, and our vibrant reading and writing community that makes Village Books and Paper Dreams such a great place. And what they say is absolutely true, there is no place like home and our home is with you in the stacks, Dear Reader.

Village Books Literary Citizenship AWARD

Village Books is proud to announce the recipients of the 2024 Literary Citizenship Award, founded in 2023 by Village Books owners Sarah Hutton, Kelly Evert, and Paul Hanson. We celebrate the recipients of this year's award who are of diverse backgrounds and professions, and have each demonstrated a commitment to engage with the literary community with the intent of giving as much, if not more so, than they receive.

The 2024 recipients of the Village Books Literary Citizenship Award are:

Linda Quinby Lambert Writer, Journalist, Librarian, Community Builder

Throughout both her personal and professional life, Linda has combined her passions for research and creative writing. Linda is known for her roles as Library Director for both Whatcom Community College and La Conner Swinomish Library, though it’s her master’s degree in journalism that explains her curious nature to all who know her. An ardent friend to readers and writers, you’ll find Linda present at many book events, and she can always be relied upon to offer insightful questions. She is an active member of Red Wheelbarrow Writers, two book clubs, two critique groups, and you’ll find her work in anthologies including Whatcom Writes annual publications, the Salish Current, I Sing the Salmon Home, and co-editor of 52 Women of Whatcom. Linda helped found both Whatcom Reads and the Chuckanut Writers Conference, community institutions that bring readers and writers together.

Seán Dwyer Writer, Editor, Teacher, Mentor

Seán Dwyer writes nonfiction and fiction, both novels and stories. He’s a Spanish professor in the Modern and Classical Languages & Literatures department at Western Washington University, speaks four other languages fluently, and is a songwriter. In 2015, a publisher was waiting for his debut novel manuscript when, in a matter of seconds, Seán's teaching and writing careers were put on hold. Rear-ended at 50 mph while stopped at a crosswalk, Seán suffered two concussions in two seconds. His memoir, A Quest for Tears, chronicles his recovery from the brain injury that left him unable to read or write for more than a few minutes at a time. Before and since, he’s generously given so much to his community of writers through The Red Wheelbarrow Writers Group, as the president of Whatcom Writers and Publishers, regular contribution to anthologies, and as the ever-supportive host of Village Books’ Open Mics. He has branched out into boutique publishing, and the authors in his list have won multiple awards. Wherever you find him, you’ll experience firsthand his generous spirit.

Literary Citizenship Award

David Beaumier Writer, Editor, Coach, Mentor

David always holds true to his first love of Argentine tango, but when he’s not dancing, he writes. The dance metaphor holds true in his literary life as it’s a dance of relationships and cooperation. His work has appeared in EWU’s Inroads, WWU’s Suffix, Whatcom Writes, and HamLit but it’s his work with his fellow writers that seems to truly fuel him. He's worked as the assistant publishing director at Village Books and is the current project manager for The Writers' Corner Anthologies, which grew out of his many years as the skillful facilitator of the VB Writes Fiction Writing Group. David helps writers find their voices as an editor and coach and serving as the Communications and Marketing Manager for Chanticleer Book Reviews. He’s a tireless supporter of writers, wherever they are on their journey, and the most frequent question he asks is, “How can I help?”

Village Books celebrates and thanks these three talented and dedicated community builders and mentors. In their own unique ways, they have each demonstrated the virtues that embody a Good Literary Citizen. For this, we award $1000 to each of them and hereby induct them into the Village Books Literary Citizen Hall of Fame which will be displayed in Village Books, Fairhaven.

Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association

One of our favorite things to do when we hire new employees is to talk to them about what we mean when we say “Building Community.” That small phrase has an outsized meaning to us. It can be a person-to-person moment as we realize we have similar reading tastes. It can be supporting our local authors with writing groups and events. It can be using our own purchasing power as locally as possible when we are sourcing supplies and services. And it is also our wonderful collaborations with our local educational and non-profit programs. But it also can be external from the store itself. We as a business are part of several bookselling-focused organizations, including the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association, or PNBA as it’s often known. This regional association supports bookstores in B.C., Alaska, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and, of course, Washington.

This spring, Village Books & Paper Dreams co-owner Sarah Hutton was elected to the position of president of the organization. She will be helping to make sure the member stores of PNBA are supported and celebrated here and across the country. She joins a great legacy of past presidents and board service from Village Books and Paper Dreams so hooray and congrats Sarah!

The PNBA presidential title comes with this lovely tiara which has been passed from president to president for over 20 years.

The sea is a constant companion here in Bellingham and Whatcom County so we're excited to bring attention to two maritime treasures this summer with our Round It Up program.

BOSUN'S WORKSHOP

A place for maritime skills with hands-on education and training!

Bosun's Workshop is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit whose mission is to raise awareness and educate the community in sailing and restoring vessels in the Pacific Northwest.

The organization consists of a dedicated, passionate team of volunteers who enjoy sharing their excitement for sailing and restoring historic vessels. Their experience is extensive—many of the crew have been working in the maritime industry for over 50 years. They have several vessel restorations under their belt, they've trained hundreds of sailors, and dozens of professional mariners got their start with them.

They are excited to extend their knowledge and expertise with the greater community and can only do it with your support. Donations and volunteers keep them going, and they'd love for you to join them—no prior experience required!

They have workshops for learning once a month, where Captain Calen Mehrer shares his extensive knowledge of woodwork, diesel engines and outboards as well as classes for paint and varnish, or help with any numerous donated projects that are boat-related. They have refinished smaller vessels like a slough racer and hacker craft, and worked with larger vessels like the Lady Washington and... The Schooner Zodiac.

Round It Up, our amazingly simple giving program, was designed to support local non-profits. Join Village Books and Paper Dreams customers who are supporting our community by rounding up your next purchase to the nearest dollar.

The Schooner Zodiac is a classic, 160-foot U.S. Coast Guard certified vessel, operated by a licensed captain and experienced team of volunteer crewmembers.

Added to the National Register of Historic Places by act of Congress in 1982, she departs her Bellingham homeport for a variety of public and private charters, as well as day and evening sails from spring through fall, exploring the pristine anchorages of the San Juan Islands and Canadian Gulf Islands.

Independent Booksellers’ Debut Picks of the Season

Do what indies do best – find and showcase undiscovered authors and compelling books!

Each year, the Indies Introduce program brings booksellers together from across the US for conversation and connection centered around exciting upcoming debut authors and titles. This spring I had the joy of being on this panel. Every few weeks I would meet over Zoom with other booksellers across the country and we would have a large book club. How large you may wonder, well we read about 50 books (not in totality for each and every book—we divided them up) and then we discussed for weeks and weeks. It was so great to talk to other booksellers; this connection is very important for all of us as we all work collectively and collegially to make all indie bookstores stronger. Following are the titles we selected for this summer & fall.

Swift River

Write Your Memoir in September

Since 2014, September has been declared Washington Memoir Writing Month (WaMemWriMo) by the Red Wheelbarrow Writers in conjunction with Village Books and Whatcom Community College. Throughout the month there are classes, readings and encouragement to write 1,666 words every day, resulting in 50,000 words of your memoir—a book —by the end of September.

Part of the 10th annual WaMemWriMo is a series of workshops that will help you along the way as you turn your memories into memoir. All led by experienced memoir writers and teachers, these workshops can be taken as a whole, or you can select from the individual workshops to suit your needs and schedule. $29 per class or $99 for the package.

Join us in welcoming Elaina M. Ellis, poet, curator, performing artist, and editor of the new story collection Someplace Generous. This first book from Generous Press is a vibrantly diverse and inclusive anthology of never-before-published romantic short stories. In these pages, desire is centered and explored through queer, trans, Black, AAPI, Latinx, Jewish, disabled, and neurodivergent lenses, and the ages of authors and characters span generations. Ellis will be interviewed by fantasy romance novelist Sarah Hawley (page 23).

We will also welcome guest poet Rena Priest. Priest, an enrolled member of the Lhaq’temish (Lummi) Nation, is a recipient of an American Book Award and served as the 6th Washington State Poet Laureate (2021-2023). When I think of summer as a kid, I have fond memories of fresh fruit and berries, but it was also a time to have sweets, like chocolate. As many of you know, we make and sell fudge. And because we make it in-house, we are able to have fun creating flavors and names. Maddie is our chocolatier on staff, and if you have been in the store when she is preparing you will know she is in the cooking process because it smells so good. We love to give out samples to hear what you like. Also do fill out the slip for new fudge flavor ideas!

We also get our chocolate truffles from two craft chocolatiers in Washington. One of them is Spokandy Chocolatier, located in Spokane, Washington —east of the mountains. Spokandy is over 100 years old! They make their truffles traditionally as practiced when Terrence J. Riley opened his candy store in 1913. Quality exists in each and every piece of candy and is hand packed for freshness. Some of the most popular truffles that we sell are birthday cake, double mocha, and marionberry. And if you have a flair for fun they also make the bear claw—a caramel filled foot with almond claws. Fun and delicious.

He's an elusive fellow, but rumor has it that he'll be hanging around Whatcom County again this summer. If you look carefully, you might just spot him. Yes, you read that right: “Find Waldo Local” is back in July!

As we've done in the past, multiple local businesses in Fairhaven and Downtown Lynden will participate in a scavenger hunt all month long.

Do you think YOU can find Waldo? Pick up a passport from either location of Village Books and Paper Dreams or one of the other participating merchants, then look for the guy in stripes. He'll be hiding somewhere in each of the businesses listed on the passport. If you can find Waldo in 10 different stores, you can come back to Village Books for a cool Waldo sticker (while supplies last). If you find Waldo in all the participating stores, you'll be entered in a raffle for the chance to win all sorts of great prizes! The Midnight Game is a deliciously chilling novel, composed of twists, turns, and a complex cast of characters. A group of teens meet up in the dead of night to summon a mysterious entity known as the Midnight Man. As long as they follow a short list of rules, they'll leave unscathed. But as the clock strikes midnight, they soon realize that this game might not be as fun as they'd hoped. I couldn't put this book down! Their grandmother grounds them in her story: from a peasant village in Palestine, struggling for survival in Aida Refugee Camp in Bethlehem, to coming to the U.S. Alice Rothchild, author, filmmaker, and physician, is focused on human rights and social justice. She writes and lectures widely, is the author of a number of books addressing health and human rights issues in Israel/Palestine. She was last in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza in August 2023. On June 24, 1946, in the wake of World War II, a bus carrying 16 members of the Spokane Indians baseball team departed Eastern Washington for their next series in Bremerton. By nightfall, seven players were dead, eight were hospitalized, and one was hitchhiking back to Spokane. Eric Vickrey is an Illinois native with a lifelong love of baseball. He has written dozens of articles as a member of the Society for American Baseball Research and is the author of two books.

JORY MICKELSON

–All This Divide Bellingham writer and poet Jory Mickelson is joining us in the Readings Gallery to share their latest collection of poetry, All This Divide. It circles and circles again the contemporary world in crisis: pandemics, environmental collapse, unending war, and unfettered consumption. These poems investigate the history and legacy of the West. Each layer has its own story to tell and also touches upon the stories that come before and after. Jory Mickelson's first book, Wilderness//Kingdom, is winner of a 2020 High Plains Book Award. They are the recipient of fellowships from the Lambda Literary Foundation, The Desert Rat Writers Residency, Dear Butte, and the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation of New Mexico.

Literacy Breakfast with Nancy Pearl

Hey Book Lovers. Mark your calendar for the annual Literacy Breakfast with the one and only Nancy Pearl! The Whatcom Literacy Council's Literacy Breakfast fundraiser featuring an expanded silent auction will take place on October 24 at the Ferndale Community Pavilion in Ferndale’s Pioneer Park. As ever, Village Books will be there selling Nancy's reading recommendations and will donate 10% of sales to Whatcom Literacy Council. Registration will begin after Labor Day at whatcomliteracy.org ; donations to attend support the adult literacy programs of the WLC.
