Ask Sheaf Street Health Store

Support for busy lifestyles Continuing our series from Sheaf Street Health Store, we explore ‘Stress and Anxiety’. This article does not seek to diagnose or treat; if you are suffering from any health condition or are currently taking prescribed medication, please consult your GP before considering any complementary therapies. Q: How do I know whether what I’m feeling is stress or anxiety – or are they the same thing? A: Stress and anxiety are often used interchangeably and can contribute to sleepless nights, a racing mind, exhaustion, endless worry, and the inability to concentrate, besides the physical aspects such as a rapid heart rate, elevated blood pressure, tension and headaches, they are in fact completely different conditions. Stress can be defined by the inability to cope with a certain level of pressure and is generally short term, such as that felt in a job interview, presentation or exam. However, once the event is over stress levels return to calm. Anxiety is an ongoing fear or worry that stems from stress but does not dissipate once the stressor has gone, the effects can affect personal life, family life and occupation.

Q: How can I reduce stress and anxiety through my diet? A: Dietary changes can be rewarding and with a little planning and organisation they are quick and easy. Swap out processed foods and high sugar foods for wholefoods. This means vegetables, salad, fruit, wholegrains, and high quality, organic where possible proteins are consumed. A simple breakfast swap would be to replace a sugary breakfast cereal for avocado on a bed of veggies. Removing sugar, trans-fats and processed foods not only dampens the inflammatory element of stress, but also makes way for highly nutritious foods that will help the body cope with pressure and worry.

Feature In addition, there are some botanical compounds revered for their calming effect. Theanine, a constituent of tea, particularly rich in green tea, is considered to exert a soothing effect. In fact, research showed that a group of students who were about to sit an exam, felt the calming and enhanced focus effects as quickly as 30 minutes after consuming 200mg of Theanine. Similarly, Lemon Balm, native to European countries including the UK, has a long history of use as a traditional medicinal herb for balancing mood and promoting feelings of wellbeing.

Visit Sheaf Street Health Store, 20 Sheaf Street, in Daventry, for a one-to-one chat, and more information.

Q: Is there anything else I can do? A: Other techniques include yoga, meditation, mantras, whilst walking in nature and spending time outdoors in barefoot can be highly therapeutic. Finding a calming activity can take some experimentation, however, reading, turning off mobiles, TVs and laptops or using just candlelight after 7pm in the home can reap improvements.

Q: Do I need a food supplement? A: Taking a B-complex formulation, such as the High Five B Complex from Viridian Nutrition can be useful to ensure that your body is getting all the supporting nutrients it needs. The B-family; including B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B12 and folate contribute to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, besides the normalising of psychological function and mental performance. At Sheaf Street Health Store we stock a wide variety of whole foods and nutritional supplements, and we can recommend options for particular needs, such as vegans and vegetarians. We also stock a range of self-help books on managing stress and anxiety through nutrition. We’d love to put a smile on your face so come and see us for information or a chat at 20 Sheaf Street, Daventry.

Recommended Reads by Shaun Higgs: How to go Vegan by Veganuary Loads of people are trying a plant-based diet these days, even if only for January, or a couple of days a week. I’ve heard a lot of different reasons why: cutting back on meat is kinder to the environment; it’s kinder to animals; it encourages us to eat healthier. A lot of top athletes now are also saying it changed their life (or saved it). It can be quite a big gear-change to give it a go though, and that’s why I like this book from the people at Veganuary – a bit of a helping hand, in a handy size.

Red Tractor food: something that brings people together If you’ve had a good festive period, you might be a bit fed up of food by now and looking to cut back. Brits spend about 20 per cent more on food in December compared to any other month of the year, according to the Bank of England. Hosting celebrations for family and friends or simply treating yourself leads to more households during the festive period buying more food, as well as those special one off seasonal and luxury items. But as we spend more of our hard-earned cash on food, do we give as much thought to where the food we are buying comes from? Fortunately for you, British farms produce wonderful, seasonal crops all year round. The fresh British vegetables you’ll be buying this month will have been picked in bitterly cold winter conditions. And nothing stops hard-working farmers caring for their animals, regardless of the weather or time of year. And if you care about the standards your food is produced to, there is a clear point of navigation you can follow. Jim Moseley is CEO of Red Tractor Assurance – the UK’s largest food and farming scheme. He says: “The Red Tractor scheme uniquely brings together the whole length of the UK food supply chain from farm to packet. We are living in an age where people’s views are so polarized it can be incredibly confusing to know who and what to trust. It is something that we see in food and farming everyday, which is why it is important to us at Red Tractor, that all our standards and requirements are based on science and facts. This ensures that our certified farms produce high quality food that is the right for shoppers, right for the environment and right for

22

farmers. With people often only taking just a short 10 seconds to make their purchasing decisions in store, Red Tractor provides a simple short-hand for them to know that the food has been produced to high standards.” Jim says with the Red Tractor logo consumers have something they can trust. It is a simple mark that guarantees a product is traceable, safe and farmed with care – the three things consumers say they care most about when buying food. “The fact that a food product was produced in the UK automatically means it is produced to some of the highest legislative food standards in the world,” Jim explained. “But if it carries the Red Tractor logo, the bar is raised even higher. What does this mean in practice? It means the people who work in the fields picking the vegetables by hand will be properly trained and treated well. It means the welfare of an animal has been of paramount importance throughout its life. And it means that any food and drink that makes its way onto your plate has been handled in a way that it remains traceable and safe to eat. It sounds like a simple proposition, but they are the principles on which Red Tractor was founded 20 years ago. We are proud of the work undertaken by farmers so they can carry the Red Tractor logo. They produce food to excellent standards at a price that consumers can afford, so this festive season. The logo can be found on millions of food items sold in supermarkets and restaurants across the country.

Celebrating women in business It’s been over 100 years since the passing of the Representation of the People Act, which first gave women the right to vote in the UK in 1918. The act gave some women and all men the right to vote in local and national elections.

The key facts show that the number of women running their own businesses is on the rise. Partly fuelled by the need for flexible working and helped by the ability to work online or remotely, many women are working for themselves offering freelance services or selling their products online.

Over 100 years on things have changed siginificantly for most women with more equality, freedom and opportunities than ever. There is plenty more to be achieved to attain true equality in terms of work, pay and opportunities and the need to inspire, educate and encourage young women is of utmost importance.

Big business

The UK may be the start-up capital of Europe, but not when it comes to women. Despite a sharp increase in female self-employment during austerity government, the number of women starting and scaling businesses remains much lower than that of men and of women in similar economies. What’s holding us back? The picture varies depending on the stage of intention or business, but the mix is the same: access to funding and networks, primary care responsibilities, sectors and skills.

UK Women in business: key facts •

Only 1 in 3 UK entrepreneurs is female: a gender gap equivalent to 1.1 million missing businesses. (Rose Review of Female Entrepreneurship, HM Treasury 2019)

In 2017, only 5.6% of UK women run their own businesses, compared to 15% of women in Canada, almost 11% of women in the US, and over 9% of women in Australia and the Netherlands. (Rose Review of Female Entrepreneurship, HM Treasury 2019)

Self-employed women are the majority of the newly self-employed. The increase in the number of women in the UK becoming self-employed is unprecedented. Historically, women have made up just over a quarter of the self-employed, but in the last decade 58% of the newly self-employed have been female.

There are now almost 1.5 million women selfemployed which represents an increase of around 300,000 in the last 10 years.

Flexible working

The Village Emporium magazine is a great example of a business owned and run by women all of whom enjoy the flexibility of working hours that enable them to fit in other businesses and family. The magazines are owned by Karen who also runs haulage company, Exact Logistics. They are run by Alison who is a nordic walking instructor and a sheep farmer in her spare time! Of our other team members, Clare is a gardener and most unusually is a rope splicer for the local chandler! Caroline our designer works as a freelancer and also sells her art at craft fairs and online. This demonstrates the reality of most female entrepreneurs who are using a variety skills and experience to create a working environment to works for them.

Inspiration

Throughout 2020 we will be bringing you sucess stories from a selection of the women in business that we work with through the Village Emporium. So if you are tempted to strike out on your own or are looking for a more creative, flexible way of earning a living, then we hope their stories will inspire you to make 2020 the year you take the first steps to starting your own business.

Mickie Fenwick-Wilson Mickie’s interest in sewing and soft furnishings began when she first learnt needlework at school as a girl. Since then she has now been in the soft furnishing industry for over 20 years. She began her career by working and sewing from home while she had two young children, the hours and flexibility suited her lifestyle. As her children got older and Mickie had more time to commit to her work, her business grew and she had the opportunity to open her first shop. This was in Rugby town centre, about 10 years ago, her hard work and perseverance meant that she was able to open a second shop in Dunchurch. Mickie owned and ran two shops for a period of time, however she was unhappy with her work life balance and amalgamated these into her shop in Dunchurch, where she has been based for over six years. One of the challenges Mickie has faced over the years is getting the work/life balance correct. The nature of the soft furnishings business is that as well as working weekdays you have to have evening appointments and work weekends. Mickie has always wanted to take on work where she could which often meant long days with early starts and late evenings. To alleviate this, Mickie took on her colleague Elaine to work alongside her. Since Elaine began working at Soft Furnishings by Mickie, it has given Mickie a great relief to have someone to rely on and share the workload with.

A more recent challenge Mickie has faced is having to compete with the internet. Online there are ready made, cheaper products available as well as cheap fabrics. Competing with these internet prices is tough for a small, independent business. However the customer doesn’t get the personal service or quality that you get through an independent business. Customers of Soft Furnishings by Mickie get Mickie’s knowledge and expertise along with high quality, made to measure products. With Mickie, customers get a complete service from start to finish. Mickie visits your home, helps put together designs and ideas for your soft furnishing needs, these are then made to measure to the highest quality and to end the service Mickie comes back out to fit the end product. Feature

Data protection / GDPR Does it matter to small businesses? The short answer is “yes”, it absolutely matters. Not just because the Information Commissioner’s Office has the power to issue enforcement notices and penalties, but because it’s what we as individuals ourselves would expect of the companies that we entrust with our information. One big reason that it’s important is because criminals can take advantage of a lack of knowledge of the rights of individuals to obtain information. They will simply submit a subject access request (SAR) to a company in the name of the person they wish to know about using a simple free email address which looks at first glance to be genuine (e.g. firstname.lastname1324@gmail.com). If that business knows their responsibilities then they will validate the requestor’s identify, establish that they are not who they say they are, and refuse the request. That’s great in principle, but it’s been demonstrated recently that many small businesses simply aren’t aware that they can and should validate the source of the request, and have handed over a great deal of data when fraudulent requests have been made. This isn’t just damaging for the individuals whose data is disclosed, but to the organisations involved. Small organisations don’t have the resources of large corporates, but still have to comply with the regulations, and it can be difficult to learn what you need to do at the same time as doing the things you do to keep the wheels of your business turning.

30

The good news is that it’s a logical process to be worked through. It can be speeded up with some guidance and support, although it’s possible to go through it using the information published by the regulator. The essential steps for all small businesses are: •

Data - What personal data do you process?

Lawful basis - What is your lawful basis for processing (you may have several)

Privacy Policy - Tell people how your process data, and what their rights are

Training - Make sure everyone is aware of their responsibilities

There is always more to it and every business is unique, but all will require these essential steps. You can do this all yourself, but if you would prefer to spend your valuable time doing what you do best then Alpha BI can help, including training on the things you need to know to maintain a high standard. Banana peel cake recipe

Serves 12 30 mins to prepare and 50 mins to cook, plus cooling 391 calories / serving Freezable

Meanwhile, beat the butter and caster sugar in a large bowl with an electric whisk for 3-4 mins (or a wooden spoon for 7-8 mins) until light and fluffy, then beat in the eggs one at a time. Stir in the vanilla.

Ingredients

In a separate bowl, mix the flour, baking powder and cinnamon with a pinch of salt. Fold half into the butter mixture with a metal spoon until just combined. Fold in the puréed banana, then the remaining flour mixture and the walnuts. Pour into the tin, level the top and bake for 50-55 mins or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Leave to cool in the tin for 10 mins, then remove and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

180g unsalted butter, softened, plus extra for greasing 2 medium whole ripe bananas, washed, ends trimmed, flesh and peel roughly chopped 180g golden caster sugar 3 large eggs 1 tsp vanilla extract 210g self-raising flour 1 tsp baking powder 1 tsp ground cinnamon 70g walnut pieces, roughly chopped Optional icing/topping 150g icing sugar 40ml milk or coconut milk 30g pack toasted coconut flakes

Method

Preheat the oven to gas 6, 200°C, fan 180°C. Grease and line a deep 20cm round cake tin with nonstick baking paper. Put the bananas and peel in a food processor with 70ml boiling water and blitz until smooth. Set aside to cool a little.

42

Optional icing/topping To make the icing, whisk the icing sugar and milk in a bowl until well combined – the consistency should be like PVA glue. If it’s too thick, add more milk, 1 tsp at a time, to loosen. Put the cake on a plate and pour the icing onto the centre, then spread out until it just drips down the sides. Scatter over the coconut flakes and leave to set. Will keep, chilled, in an airtight container for up to 2 days.

Freezing and defrosting guidelines

In order to enjoy optimum flavour and quality, frozen items are best used within 3 months of their freezing date.

Feature

10 reasons to fit faux wood shutters in your home this year Faux wood shutters combine the traditional warmth and beauty of natural wood with the practical advantages of high–tech materials and intelligent design. Here are 10 reasons to choose faux wood shutters for your home. 1. Durable, versatile and stand the test of time Faux wood shutters are extremely durable and long lasting. They are made from a quality, hard-wearing material that will stand the test of time and come with a 10 year guarantee*. Faux wood shutters are waterproof and so are perfect for wet or humid environments like kitchens, bathrooms and even wet rooms. 2. Add value to your home Shutters are a great way to add value to your home as they are considered part of the fixtures and fittings that come with the house. Good quality shutters add timeless elegance, help to add curb appeal to a property and can even increase the resale value. 3. Flexible control of privacy and light The different styles that are available will meet different needs in terms of privacy and light control: Full height shutters provide maximum privacy and light control.Tier-on-tier shutters allow you to open up the top and bottom part of the window independently. Cafe style shutters cover only the bottom section of the window and leave the top part uncovered. 4. Energy efficient Shutters help to reduce utility bills by providing extra insulation

52

between the interior of the room and the glass, improving the energy efficiency of your home. Shutters are ideal for keeping homes warm in winter and cool in summer. Tests on faux wood shutters showed a difference of 3oc between a room with shutters closed compared to shutters open*. 5. Great for unusual shaped windows In properties that have unusual shaped windows like arches, trapezoids, or even triangular windows, finding a suitable window dressing can be an issue. Faux wood shutters are made bespoke to fit your exact window. 6. Noise reduction In addition to heat, shutters are a really effective way to help reduce noise pollution that may enter your home. They help to create a barrier across the window that absorbs noise. 7. Easy maintenance Faux wood shutters are made from an advanced, solid-core composite material and their special finish stands up to moisture, heat, and ultraviolet rays without fading, denting, warping or chipping. This also makes them easier to clean than wooden shutters. They can even be showered down.

8. Made in the UK Faux wood shutters are made in the UK* which, as well as supports the culture of buying local, keeps the carbon footprint of your purchase low. Luxaflex shutter components are made in Derby and the shutters themselves are manufactured in Birmingham, right here in the Midlands. 9. Short lead time Because the faux wood shutters are made here in the UK it means the lead-time is greatly reduced. Real wood shutters are mostly manufactured in China and have a much longer lead time of around 12 weeks. Typically faux wood shutters can be installed within 4 weeks from the point of order. 10. Child-friendly One of the main concerns with other types of window dressing is the safety of children. Shutters don’t have any cords and the slats are simply moved by hand making them much safer for children to operate. *Guarantee is for Luxaflex faux wood shutters In tests carried out for Luxaflex Luxaflex faux wood shutters are manufactured in the UK. Their real wood shutters are manufactured in China. By Kate James

Ingredients

500g white fish (haddock, cod, plaice, etc.) 600ml milk 6 to 8 large potatoes Pinch salt 50g butter 1 1/2 tablespoons plain flour 2 tablespoons chopped parsley 100g grated cheese

The

Method

Preheat oven to 200 C / Fan 180 C / Gas mark 5. Place the fish in an oven-proof dish and cover with the milk. Bake in the oven uncovered for 30 minutes or until the fish is cooked through. Peel and chop the potatoes, and boil with a pinch of salt until soft. When the fish is done drain the milk into a jug and put aside. Flake the fish with a fork and leave in the dish. Once potatoes are done, drain, then add 30g of the butter and a splash of the reserved milk and mash. In another saucepan melt the remaining 20g of butter on a medium heat and slowly add the flour stirring constantly until you get a smooth paste. Add the remaining milk a little bit at a time, stirring constantly, until you get a sauce-like consistency. Add the parsley and stir well. Cook for 5 minutes, constantly stirring. Add the sauce to the flaked fish and mix well. Top with the mashed potato and spread evenly. Sprinkle the grated cheese evenly over the potato topping. Place back in the oven for 30-40 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbling and slightly golden brown. Take out of the oven and leave to cool for 5 to 10 minutes.

Best foot forward

Best foot forward - Long Bucky circular walk Northamptonshire offers a surprising variety of landscapes from the rolling hills in the north, to the scenic vistas and amazing woodlands in the south. If you add the Grand Union Canal with its many towpaths, quaint little villages that are secreted in history it is no wonder that they call this county the “Hidden Cotswolds”. LONG BUCKBY WINDMILL CIRCULAR WALK Distance: 4.8 miles / 10,140 steps Duration: Approx 2 hours Difficulty: Easy to moderate Dog friendly Download this walk, complete with turn by turn photos at: https://www.adventuregeek.co.uk/product/ ag17/ Long Buckby is a large village with a population of nearly 4000 people. During this walk you will cross three main modes of transport for the area. You will pass under the

60

the main train line (yes, Long Buckby has its own train station), over the M1 and along the Grand Union Canal. THE ROUTE: Parking outside the Rugby Club on Station Road we head towards the village. Cross over the zebra crossing and follow the signs for the Children’s recreation area which is on your left. Release that inner child and have a go on the very unusual swing formation in the centre of the park before you head out into the countryside. Following the map and photo instructions, you will be taken across fields, along a canal and pass two rather large windmills. One surprise was the huge field of free range chickens that you will need to cross. There are a few stiles on this route and two are a little difficult for larger dogs, so please be aware of this before you venture out. We would also recommend that you wear walking boots or even wellies if the weather is not so good, as this route can get muddy if it has been raining heavily.

The Travel Locker…. Local to you

It’s go, go, go at the Silverstone Experience. On the day that Lewis Hamilton celebrated his sixth formula one world championship in Texas, USA, I visited the home of British Motor Racing in Silverstone, Northamptonshire.

I watched vintage film footage of the first British Grand Prix held at Silverstone in October 1948 when an estimated 100,000 people flocked to watch the Italian Luigi Villoresi in a Maserati 4CLT/48 take the chequered flag. Currently a Formula One race at Silverstone can attract more than 300,000 visitors with millions more watching on screens around the world. Visitors can sit in a replica car from the race and have their photograph taken. The pre-show, `The Grid` takes you on a journey through seventy years of motor racing history as you stand, watch and listen as iconic motor racing cars roar away from the grid on screen at the side of you. There are many stories of human enterprise, great sporting rivalries and engineering innovations told using state of the art interactive displays and iconic film and photographs.

Located in a restored former World War Two RAF air hangar, the Silverstone Experience celebrates the past, present and future of the iconic Silverstone circuit. The end of the Second World War left Britain with no major race track, after Brooklands, but plenty of airfields! One of these was situated in the middle of England outside the village of Silverstone so it was seen as an ideal location to bring back international motor racing to Britain. I knew nothing about the history of the RAF base in this Northamptonshire village which helped create the right conditions for the future motor circuit. The RAF Silverstone section vividly describes the history of the circuit as an airfield and also encourages visitors to train to be part of a Second World War Wellington Bomber crew.

Visitors can also learn about the science and production skills behind the sport as well as viewing the historic racing cars and motor bikes. On display are Barry Sheene`s 1979 RG500 Suzuki, leathers and helmet and Nigel Mansell`s 1992 British Grand Prix – winning Williams FW14B. The most recent additions include the RB6 Red Bull with which Mark Webber took the chequered flag in the 2010 British GP and Maverick Viñales’ podium-placed 2017 Yamaha YZR-M1 MotoGP bike. There are over 177 objects on display ranging from race day programmes, a section of a Wellington bomber and the Grand Prix signing on sheets which drivers like Damon Hill and Michael Schumacher had to sign before racing. Visitors can look at their helmets and take a close up of their signatures on the signing in sheet.

The Travel Locker…. Local to you

If you have ever wondered what goes during race weekend in the pit lane, the medical suite or commentators’ box, it is here for all to see. You can even have a go at commentating on a race yourself or see how quickly you can change the wheel nut bolts on a Grand Prix motor racing car. I did very well at recognising the various coloured flags used during the races. To finish your tour, a special seated cinema experience, the `Ultimate Lap of Silverstone` with authentic special effects takes you for a spin of the circuit with commentary from an all-star team including Murray Walker. Hold on to your seats! It`s Go, Go, Go! If you love Motor Sport, Grand Prix racing, the design and engineering of motorcycles and racing cars or have a passing interest in the local history of the Silverstone area including its links with the RAF, you will not want to miss this memorable experience. Make 2020 the year you use less plastic Did you know?

It is estimated that an average of 35.8 million plastic bottles are used EVERY DAY in the UK, but only 19.8 million are recycled each day. This means there are on average 16 million plastic bottles a day not making their way into the recycling bin..

How to recycle plastic bottles

✅ ✅ ✅ ✅

Replace lids and tops. If they stay on the container they will get recycled. Squash bottles to save space. Empty and rinse bottles. Left over foods or liquids can contaminate other recyclables and if bottles contain liquid they may not be recycled as deemed too heavy by the automated sorting process. Liquid can also damage the machinery. Leave on labels - these will be removed in the process.

Recycling plastic film & carrier bags

What types of plastic bottles can I recycle?

✅ ✅ ✅ ✅ ✅ ✅ ✅ ✅

All clear and coloured plastic bottles from around the home Detergent and soap bottles (minus the pump) Cleaning product bottles (e.g. bathroom cleaners, bleach) (Triggers can be left on) Skin care product bottles

Most major supermarkets now have carrier bag collection points and for those who can’t recycle plastic film at home, some types of plastic films can also be recycled at carrier bag collection points at the larger stores of most major supermarkets. For online shopping deliveries, many supermarkets also allow you to hand your unwanted bags back to the driver for recycling.

Use less!

The best way to cut down on plastic usage though is to use less! Take resuable bags to the supermarket, wherever possible buy products in glass jars not plastic, use a fillable water bottle and leave your veg loose in your trolley.

Shampoo and shower gel bottles Fizzy and non-fizzy drinks and water bottles Milk bottles Ready-to-use plant food and pesticides bottles (check the label)

Garden tips for January/February In January and February it might be cold but the garden is starting to come alive. First with aconites, followed by snowdrops, hellebores, catkins and most gloriously of all, the early irises are all coming into flower. Now is a great time to plan for the coming gardening year and to order seeds and plants. ... Also put out food for birds and leave some garden areas uncut, to provide shelter for wildlife.

this year’s growth, so if you cut back the old stems, you’ll encourage new growth and get a better crop. Sow early crops of hardy broad beans outdoors.

Feed your plants

Plants are about to have a huge growth surge and it would really help them get off to a good start. If you have time, dig in well-rotted organic matter but, for a quick fix, sprinkle a balanced fertiliser onto the soil.

Split snowdrops Get pruning

Lift and divide snowdrops when they are “in the green” (before they die down, for best establishment).

It’s time to prune deciduous shrubs and fruit trees, before the sap starts to rise and the buds break. Cut out anything that’s dead, diseased or damaged. If you didn’t do it in autumn, it is also the time to prune roses and other summer-flowering shrubs such as late clematis and buddleias, always cut just above a bud, imagine a new stem coming from that bud with a season’s growth with a flower on the end of it. In January look at hellebores and remove any leaves that have fallen past 45 degrees or that are affected by blight, then finish the job in mid–February so that the flowers can be clearly seen.

Digging and planting

The vegetable garden is all about preparation at this time of year, but there are a few things you can start to sow. Digging is the thing to do now. Leave the soil in rough chunks and it will be broken down by the weather in time for sowing. Potatoes, onion sets and shallots can be planted in a few weeks so it’s a good idea to order them now. Cut back autumn-fruiting raspberries. These flower and fruit on
