Northamptonshire offers a surprising variety of landscapes from the rolling hills in the north, to the scenic vistas and amazing woodlands in the south. If you add the Grand Union Canal with its many towpaths, quaint little villages that are secreted in history it is no wonder that they call this county the “Hidden Cotswolds”.

CRICK AND YELVERTOFT CIRCULAR WALK Distance: 4.6 miles / 10K steps Duration: Approx 1hr 45mins Difficulty: Easy to moderate Dog friendly Download this walk, complete with turn by turn photos at: https://www.adventuregeek.co.uk/product/ ag03/

Crick village is set on the Grand Union Canal and has a large marina where the famous annual Crick Boat Show is held. The church also houses a very rare organ. THE ROUTE: Starts at Crick Community Sports Centre car park, Yelvertoft Rd, Crick, Northants NN6 7TF . This walk is full of surprises and adventure. There are mystery plaques under your feet as you cross the bridge, before working up a sweat as you climb up and over Cracks Hill. Release that inner child and have a go on the rope swing and perhaps have a quick chat with the sheep. Check out the famous beacon and take photos of the views before making your way down the hill and onto the footpath that leads to Yelvertoft. Spot herons as you walk along the canal and admire the boats as you pass the marina. If you have time to visit All Saints church in Yelvertoft then please do so. On your way back to Crick, the walk takes you through the magic of Millennium Wood, where you can spot an array of wild flowers, fauna and animals (there is an information board telling you what to look out for). As you exit the woods, head over the bridge and back through Jubilee Woods to collect your car.

PHOTO CHALLENGE! Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to capture a selfie with the Beacon.

Ingredients 6 lamb shanks 2 large onions, each cut into 4 thick slices Wild dried oregano or dried oregano 2 tbsp 3-4 bay leaves 6 medium desiree potatoes, peeled and cut in 1/2 (see notes below) 6 carrots, cut in 1/2 lengthways 3 tomatoes, each cut into 3 thick slices Mild red pepper paste 1 heaped tbsp

Method Heat the oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4. Put the lamb, onions, oregano, bay leaves, potatoes, carrots and tomatoes into a large, deep roasting tray with plenty of seasoning, mix well then spread evenly.

Whisk the pepper paste into 480ml of hot water and pour into the tray. You want just enough liquid to cover the bottom of the tray so add a little extra if necessary. 10

Cover the tray with foil and roast for 2 hours. Remove the foil and put back into the oven for 30-40 minutes to colour and crisp the top of the lamb a little.
