Lamport Hall, located off the A508 between Northampton and Market Harborough, was home to the Isham family for over four centuries. Today it is best known for its classical frontage, started by John Webb in 1655 and contains outstanding collections. The Lamport Hall Preservation Trust and the University of Leicester have announced three study days for 2012, with lectures given by renowned academics in their field. The first study day is on Tuesday 22 May and will be given by Dr. Sophie Oosterwijk, entitled: ‘Facing the Head: The Art of Portraiture’. The second is on Tuesday 12 June and will be given by Prof. Susan Gordon, entitled: ‘Stone Cold Beauties: Sculpture in the English Country House’. Excitement and anticipation are in the air in Dunchurch after the announcement on March 19th that the Olympic Torch will come through the village. Local people will be able to get a glance at the Olympic Torch on Monday July 2nd as it makes its way from Coventry via Rugby and then onto Northampton as part of its 70 day relay around the UK. The Dunchurch leg of the relay is scheduled to start on Rugby Road (where it meets Northampton Lane) at 9.43am and will continue through the centre of the village, ending on Coventry Road opposite the entrance to Don Cerce Close.

Local connections Carina Haley of Dunchurch is one of the lucky nominees who has been chosen to carry the torch. Nominated for her tireless charity and community work , Carina will be carrying the torch through Warwick on July 1st. On hearing of her successful application Carina said: “I was amazed to hear that I had been chosen from all the hopefuls. And to get to carry the torch so close to home is just the icing on the cake for me, I feel very lucky and very honoured.”

The Olympic Torch is being made in Coventry! Premier Sheet Metal has won the prestigious contract, beating hundreds of manufacturing ïUPV DFURVV WKH 8. 7KH ORFDO ïUP LV FXUUHQWO\ ZRUNLQJ RQ WKH torch - a three-sided golden cone perforated with 8,000 circles, designed to represent the 8000 torchbearers who will carry it on its journey.

Local born and bred Olympian, Katharine Merry, who achieved a bronze medal at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 told The Village Emporium: “It’s a once in a life time opportunity to see the torch in the streets of Dunchurch and surrounding areas.” Katharine was born and raised in Dunchurch (where her parents still live) and attended both the Infant and Junior School and will be known to many of our readers. Katharine does not just see this as a key sporting legacy, but one that should inspire old and young alike to achieve their lifetime ambitions and not just in sport. She said “Strive to be the best at whatever you do. There’s huge excitement at local level about the visit of the torch and a feeling of national pride surrounding the Olympics and Paralympics. I hope it will inspire everyone to think about their dreams and ambitions and let the legacy live on.” Katharine will be presenting on Midlands Today during the torch relay through the Midlands and will then be part of the BBC 5live team at the Olympics and commentating with Channel 4 for the Paralympics. Summer is here and with it hopefully comes the warm weather... and with the forthcoming Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, what better way to celebrate everything ‘British’ than a day out exploring the jewels we have in the local area? More than 3,700 gardens across England and Wales are part of the National Garden Scheme, opening their gates to about 750,000 visitors and raising more than £2.5 million in aid of nursing, caring and gardening charities each year.
