LEADING BY EXAMPLE Don’t forget to ‘like’ Village Health Clubs & Spas on Facebook, where you’ll be privy to contests we are currently running, fitness information and Village events—everything Village!

It is important for me as a General Manager to encourage members to use the club every day and assist them in reaching their fitness goals and the healthy lifestyle they desire. Because I believe in leading by example, I personally participate in a different activity each day, as it provides me the opportunity to get my exercise and observe how members are using all areas of the club. My workouts include treading water, weight training, and cycle classes, as well as the use of the Kinesis Wall, Stepmill, arc trainer, and elliptical fitness crosstrainer. The variety keeps me motivated and prevents my body from getting accustomed to using the same muscles every day. As you probably know, exercise is vital, but what we place in our mouths is just as important. Recently I have made some small changes in my diet. If something has more than four ingredients on the label, I pass on it. Breakfast includes cold old-fashioned or steel-cut oats, in an “oatmeal on the run”, recipe. Lunch is always some type of salad with a protein included. I have increased my water intake during the day (the rule of thumb is to drink half your body weight in ounces per day), and eliminated coffee and soda pop. I have switched from steaming to roasting vegetables, which has been an enjoyable change (20 minutes @ 400°F with light coconut oil over the top of the veggies).

better fat burner. Using the MYZONE® chest monitor, I can ask myself the following questions: Am I getting the proper rest to improve my fitness? What happens in each zone and why is it important? What happens to my heart rate when I’m tired? It is important for weight loss to train longer periods of time in the lower fat burning zones. The most exciting and rewarding addition at the Village in 2017 has been the use of heart rate monitors from MYZONE.® I have learned through our Village staff that every person has a unique maximum heart rate based on their genetics. I have learned that as I become more fit, and my heart rate zones increase, I get closer to my maximum, and I become a

EVERY DAY TRIPS

Summer Telluride 2017

Thirty Village members escaped the heat and had an amazing four-day trip to Telluride, CO. Members hiked, went on jeep tours, rode road bikes, played tennis, and golfed. Members were able to connect with new and old friends and came home with everlasting friendships. They can hardly wait until next summer.

The high temperatures didn’t keep the members from playing in the summer golf league at Gainey Ranch Golf.

ANTI-INFLAMMATORY FOODS

Could you be missing out on these powerful foods? Through nutrition, we can help heal and reduce inflammation in the body.

8 | BET TERLIFE fall 2017

Kristina Hallberg, RDN Gainey Village Registered Dietitian Nutritionist

To live your healthiest life, it’s worth learning how to decrease inflammation in your body. Chronic inflammation can be caused by a variety of things including, but not limited to, not getting enough sleep, not taking well-deserved rest days, environmental toxins, mental stress, and eating too many processed foods, processed sugars and fried foods.

Wild salmon, for its high omega-3 content: Grill or bake it and pair with roasted asparagus and roasted sweet potatoes.

Many fresh, real, colorful vibrant foods contain valuable nutrients that may help lower the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease and cancer, and can reduce inflammation in the body. Here are my top five inflammation-busting foods to include in your healthy lifestyle.

Turmeric root, for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Include in curry dishes, add as a spice to veggie dishes, or make turmeric tea.

Enjoy!

Fresh ginger, for its anti-inflammatory and digestive effects: Add fresh ginger to smoothie recipes or grate it on salads and Thai dishes.

Green leafy veggies, like spinach for their anti-inflammatory properties, antioxidants, and nutrient rich profile. Stir into frittatas, saute, or chop raw into your favorite salad.

Blueberries, for their ability to reduce inflammation, high fiber content, vibrant color, and antioxidants like resveratrol. Sprinkle on oatmeal, add into smoothies, or enjoy as a snack any time.

MASTER’S SWIM at the VILLAGE

Who is it for? The master’s swim programs are open to all Village members and their guests. From beginner swimmers to season athletes, each class is tailored by expert swim instructors to provide a friendly and open atmosphere for you to further develop your love, or soon to be love, for the sport of swimming. Masters swimming is not meant to teach survival swim skills, but rather workouts are designed around the four competitive swimming strokes: butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle.

What can you expect from a master’s swimming class? Most classes are an hour long including warm up and cool down. As a coach, I like to take the time to break down important components of technique with more beginner swimmers with the use of various drills and exercises. A solid foundation of correct body position, early vertical forearms, and breathing patterns will allow you to develop good habits that will lead to great swimming and further enjoyment of the sport.

Workouts focus on improving cardiovascular fitness, building resistance to muscular fatigue, and building muscular strength. This is accomplished with intervals of various distances,

Whether you’re training for a triathlon such as Ironman or simply looking to feel better every day, master’s swimming will help you achieve your goals. Personally, I like to mix my classes up with occasional body weight and core exercises on the pool deck as well as relay races. By mixing it up with dry land exercises, we keep it interesting and the work capacity high.

Paul Stevenson, DC Ranch Master Swim Coach/Instructor

What are the benefits of swimming with a master’s program? Swimming under the instruction of a qualified coach aids in keeping swimming safe, and you are more likely to avoid over-use injuries that stem from poor technique and movement patterns. In addition, you can expect increased accountability over swimming alone. The mental fatigue involved with deciding when to swim and what workout to do is eliminated—just show up with and open attitude and ready to learn! Swimming provides a great social outlet with like-minded people; many master’s swimmers become fast friends and build relationships that extend beyond the club. Whether you’re looking to try something new or get back into the water after time away from it, master’s swimming is a fantastic addition to your current fitness regimen or the perfect start to a new one.

times, and recovery periods. By manipulating the volume and intensity of intervals, we can provide a wide range stimulus for our bodies to adapt to.

HELLO I want people to feel good about themselves through training, like my first weight program made me feel in college.

PEAK PERFORMANCE Ocotillo’s fitness director is on a mission to get every member working with a personal trainer. Emily Callison knew she wanted to be a personal trainer when she was on the tennis team at the University of North Dakota. “When we got a strength and conditioning program, it had such a big impact on me that I switched majors,” she recalls. “Working with a trainer really helped my game and changed my life.”

14 | BET TERLIFE fall 2017

Emily earned a master’s degree in exercise physiology from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and her thesis on how grunting in tennis effects ball velocity and oxygen utilization was published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research. After living on the East Coast for a few years, Emily moved back to her home state of Arizona. She was working in a physical therapy office when the Ocotillo Village Health Club & Spa was being built. “I really liked the high end atmosphere and the opportunities for growth that the Village offered,” she says. “I knew about the Village Clubs from playing tennis tournaments at the Camelback location when I was growing up.”

Emily was hired as a personal trainer and tennis concierge when the Ocotillo Club first opened its doors in 2015. The two roles allowed her to use her one-on-one training talents and organizational skills, and now those have both come together in her new position as fitness director. We caught up with Emily and asked her about the benefits of training and how she and her team are helping Village members achieve peak performance. the village: Why is it so important to have a trainer?

emily callison: There are so many reasons to invest in personal training. I really do think everyone should have one, myself included. Improving your fitness improves the quality of your everyday life, and when you have a trainer you’re a lot more likely to stick with a program. Not only does a good trainer motivate you by keeping you accountable and making sure you’re progressing, but they can also make sure you stay free from injury.

How does training improve someone’s everyday life? I have one client who came to me when she was turning forty, and her goal was to feel strong and not helpless. After about six months of working with her, she came in one day so proud of the fact that she could lift a big carton of water bottles from Costco all by herself. It was a big achievement for her, and her training sessions have continued to give her a lot of confidence. She’s even stronger than her husband now! How often should someone see a trainer? A lot of it depends on the person, but I think the true answer is as often as you possibly can. Two or three times a week is probably optimal, but if you can only do one time a week, or once a month, then start with that. Do you offer services at the Village that can make training more accessible for more members? Of course. Our small group training sessions are great, and they start at just $18 an hour. And we have a program called MyVillage Fit Coach, which gives you a one-hour training session each month and a customized training program tailored to your specific goals. These are great ways to check in with a professional and make any necessary modifications. What do you like best about your job? Aside from helping members be their best, I really like putting our different programs together and offering innovative ways for people to stay motivated. As a team, we’re always talking about ideas for new programs, and trying to figure out how to improve the ones we’re already offering. In the fall, we’ll be starting a new eight-week session of Transform leading up to the holidays, and we’ll be doing more club-wide fitness challenges. It seems like you really love what you do. That’s so true! I feel lucky to have found something that I’m really passionate about. I love working with the members and all the other trainers. I knew when I started working here that it was a great atmosphere. The trainers stay for a long time at the Village, which is kind of unusual in this industry, so I knew they were doing something right when I came here. What are all those letters after your name? Hahahaha. I know, there are a lot of them! MS is for my Masters of Science degree. NASM-CPT means I’m a certified personal trainer with the National Association of Sports Medicine, and CES stands for corrective exercise specialist. What is a corrective exercise specialist? That credential is really important. Sometimes people can’t do exercises properly because of some physical imbalances. I can look at how someone does a squat, for example, and if their knees are caving in I can give them a combination of stretching and strengthening exercises to prevent that. Exercise should be helpful, not harmful!

YOGAWHEEL

FOR NECK & SHOULDER PAIN

One of the most common problems fitness enthusiasts and yoga practitioners complain about is chronic pain around the shoulder blades and in the upper back and neck. This kind of pain plagues those of us who work with our arms extended in front of us, whether we’re typing on the computer, cooking, carrying children, lifting heavy objects, or washing dishes.

18 | BET TERLIFE fall 2017

Jessyca Heinen-Collesei, Yoga Instructor at DC Ranch Village and founder of Shakti Yoga & The Shakti Yoga Wheel,® LLC

Let’s face it: that includes just about all of us. Because these activities are especially demanding on the arms, shoulders, and upper back, it’s not surprising that back pain is so widespread, even among the most dedicated yoga students and fitness lovers. Upper back pain commonly stems from the tendency to slump in the spine and round the shoulders. Slumping causes the shoulder blades to slide away from the spine, chronically overstretching and weakening the muscles around them. Eventually, these muscles harden into tough bands to protect themselves from this constant strain. As they tire, these weakened fibrous muscles go into spasm, creating hot, persistent pains along the edges of the shoulder blades and the sides of the neck. Common shoulder stretches reduce the upper back pain only marginally, and some can even make the problem worse. That’s because stretching often focuses on the pain without addressing its deeper causes. The cause of the slumping, paradoxically, lies in the front of the body, deep within the shoulder area of the upper chest. Tightness in the upper chest muscles pulls the shoulders forward and down while rotating the upper arms inward. By releasing the tension in these muscles, we can undo the most persistent cause of chronic upper back pain.

At the Village Clubs we are dedicated to supporting our members with the best service and equipment so they can train safely and efficiently or rehabilitate quickly. This is why we are continuously investing in our members and in new and exciting equipment. The yoga wheel is a relatively new, very user-friendly tool that stretches out your spine, opens the shoulders and the upper back, enhances blood circulation, and increases mobility, flexibility, and strength. It is easy to use and very efficient.

How to Stretch and Open the Chest (Correctly) Yoga and specific props like the yoga wheel give us powerful tools to stretch and open the chest. However, we must be attentive to some simple details to ensure that these stretches properly target the problem. Using a yoga wheel to stretch out the shoulders and chest can be very beneficial as the yoga wheel is easy to adjust if you feel the need to. Start sitting on your heels, bringing the hand on top of the yoga wheel. Slowly hunch forward in your hips, keep your arms straight by lifting the armpit away from the floor. Lift and rotate the inner shoulder outwards. Bring your forehead onto the floor or on your fist or a block for more leverage.

Gently draw the upper arm bone and the scapula (shoulder blade) down towards your waist line and rotate the outer tip of your shoulder to the floor. Lift your seat away from your heels and needle the arm and most part of the shoulder under. Make sure your hips are still square. Relax your head into the floor and keep the extended arm on the wheel straight. Gently draw the upper arm bone, on top of the wheel, and the scapula down towards your waist line and rotate the outer tip of your shoulder to the floor. Sit gently onto your heels, knees slightly apart. Interlace your fingers and close your palms. Place the elbows on top of the yoga wheel. Push the elbows into the yoga wheel and roll further away from you until you can feel the stretch in your shoulders and chest. Keep your rib cage anchored down. Lift the inner shoulder and the armpits away from the floor. Draw the outer shoulder blade towards the chest and lower the head into your upper arms. Lift the seat and curl the toes under for more stability. Lengthen through your spine and find your rib anchor to keep the integrity in your upper body, still pushing the elbows into the yoga wheel and rolling it slightly away from you. Apply all shoulder movements above. Purvottanasana (upward-facing plank) is a posture that stretches the brachialis (inner arm muscles) as well as the chest. To begin, sit on the floor with your knees bent and your feet a comfortable distance in front of you. Place your hands on the floor 12 to 16 inches behind you, wider than your hips and (ideally) with your fingers pointing forward. (If you feel wrist pain in this position, place a support such as a folded towel under the heels of your hands or turn your hands outward.) Bend your elbows slightly, and, as you exhale, soften your chest downward, bowing your head. As you inhale, draw your shoulders back, keeping your elbows bent and your upper arms parallel. Lift and open your upper chest, feeling the stretch just below the lines of your collarbones. Keep your hips on the floor.

Stretching often focuses on the pain without addressing its deeper causes. By releasing the tension in these muscles, we can undo the most persistent cause of chronic upper back pain. — Jessyca Heinen-Collesei

Next, with each inhalation, lift your chest and straighten your arms, maintaining the open space between your chest and the fronts of your shoulder joints. The more you straighten the arms while pressing downward through the mounds of your index fingers, the more you feel the stretch along the inner edges of your biceps and forearms. Progress in the pose by raising your hips. Don’t take your head back at first—keep it lifted, looking toward your knees. Continue to lift your chest. Ultimately you can take your head back by lengthening through the crown of your head. Avoid throwing your head back in a way that collapses your chest and hyperextends your neck. Do not lift your hips if your arms turn in, if you feel a sharp pulling deep inside your shoulder, or again, if your chest collapses. In the full pose, the legs are extended straight out in front of you. Isometrically push your heels into the yoga wheel and toward your hands to activate your hamstrings. Extend through your toes, lift your hips, and open your chest. Shoulder work is a foundation for nearly all yoga poses. Lengthening the chronically short muscles in the inner arm and chest establishes better alignment in the shoulders and frees you of fatigue and painful spasms in your upper back. When your shoulder joints are aligned, they enjoy their fullest range of motion. Your chest feels broad and open, and the lower tips of your shoulder blades stay firmly and comfortably in place on your back.

Yoga Nidra is release of all doing, all effort to be anywhere but where you are. It is a subtraction of doing. In the absence of doing, you notice you are already whole. — Kim Balzan

YOGANIDRA Yoga Nidra, also known as “yogic sleep,” is becoming widely popular because of the significant benefits stressed-out individuals are experiencing.

20 | BET TERLIFE fall 2017

Kim Balzan, Advanced Yoga Nidra Facilitator, Amrit Method Certified

Benefits of Yoga Nidra with Sound Healing It is a guided form of meditation taking you to a point just above sleep, and anyone can do it. It is at this point where your body can finally experience true relaxation. In this day and age, most individuals never get out of “fight or flight” mode, the body’s heightened stress response. Between work, driving in traffic, raising a family, the stresses of every day life, and trying to work on yourself, etc., everything is stressing us out on a cellular level, all the time! So while you might think you’re lying there doing nothing on the yoga mat, that is very far from what is occurring. As you start to drop deeper into the meditation, the body begins to soften in all ways, letting your awareness drop as far as the deepest delta brainwave state, which the majority of the population never reaches. Since all other activity is shut off, this is the most restorative state for the body. It is here when the body can increase serotonin, oxytocin, and human growth hormone; decrease cortisol: soothe chronic pain and depression; release anxiety, fear, and worries—and the list can go on and on. Whatever you are struggling with, you can benefit from nidra. All of this can be achieved in a 40-minute Yoga Nidra class, equivalent to three-and-a-half to four hours of deep sleep. We always want to be busy, and we are always multi-tasking, thinking of the next thing to do, the next place to be, and we

are never truly in the present moment. So when you come to experience a yoga nidra meditation, you are being handed a gift that can and will change your life. If you want to see significant shifts, it has to become a practice. Even practicing yoga nidra once a week, you will start to notice a difference in day-to-day life.

Yoga Nidra with Sound Healing In my classes at the Village, I incorporate the use of sound. I only use the finest Alchemy Crystal bowls, which are infused with gemstones, minerals, and precious metals. As I play the bowls, you are receiving the benefits of everything that is infused in them physically, mentally, and emotionally. The reason I integrate sound into the yoga nidra is because most people have a lot going in their mind, and it can be very difficult to let go and relax. This is where sound does it for you immediately. Your mind cannot go up against the sound and vibration of the crystal bowls or the gong. It may try, but the sound will always win. You hear it with your ears, but it is affecting the entire body, and will often leave you in such a blissful state it is hard to explain or imagine. It’s working the body on a cellular level. Come and experience this incredible, one-of-a-kind class. Check the online group fitness schedule for days and times.

7WAYS

TO BECOME A BETTER TENNIS PLAYER

today+tomorrow!

I have been teaching in one form or another for almost 30 years now. I have given thousands of lessons and seen many students improve greatly—and some take lessons and not really improve. Below are a few simple ideas on how to improve in both the short term and long term as you enjoy this great sport of tennis.

7 6 5

Get fitter. One of the most overlooked ways to improve is to drop a couple pounds or improve your cardiovascular fitness. I won’t go into detail here on how to do this—I will leave that to the trainer— but suffice it to say if you are fitter you will play better tennis! Get smarter. Be a student of the game whenever possible. There are lots of ways to do this. If you are a reader, read some books. Engage your peers or professionals in conversations, watch tennis and pay attention to tendencies, patterns, and what causes errors. You don’t have to physically improve to become a better and smarter player. You can play smarter by understanding percentage tennis, learning better positioning or shot selection, becoming better at identifying and exploiting opponents, weaknesses. Gain self-awareness. Take the time to do a self-evaluation, by yourself or with your friendly Village tennis professional.

Evaluate your strengths and weaknesses in the following categories: technique, serve and returns, groundstrokes, net game, fitness, emotional toughness, and tennis intelligence. Use this newfound awareness to create your game style based on your strengths and a plan to improve.

3

2 1

Get help. Whether you take three lessons a week or one lesson a year, use a professional to help guide your improvement. Start with a good conversation so you are both on the same page for what you want to get from your lessons and whether your goals are short-, mid- or long-term improvement. Have a list of what you want to get from the lessons and how that fits into your improvement plan.

Dave Critchley DC Ranch Village Tennis Director

Practice with a purpose. Whether playing a practice match or at a clinic, be sure to have personal goals (purpose) for that practice session. Your goals for the practice can be a simple as trying to have great footwork, stay positive, or be aware of what’s working. Have a plan. Whether you take lessons, attend clinics, or just play in your weekly foursome, if you want your game to improve you have to have a plan. There are lots of ways to improve and you don’t need to spend hours on the ball machine or take three lessons a week, but without a plan of what you need to improve and how you plan to improve you probably won’t see much progress!

fall 2017 BET TERLIFE | 21

Have fun. Figure out why you play tennis and what you enjoy doing. If you like competing, then seek out competitive situations. If you enjoy clinics and lessons schedule more of those. If you want to improve, figure out what you enjoy the most and build that into your weekly tennis schedule.

PUMPKIN

Move over, Starbucks! Fall isn’t only about pumpkin lattes anymore! Tis’ the season to fall in love with the benefits of pumpkin at the spa! Aside from obviously smelling amazing, pumpkin serves many functions in skincare. It contains potent ingredients that aid in the overall anti-aging process. Pumpkin is packed with vitamins, minerals, retinol, and alpha hydroxy acids. Pumpkin makes an excellent enzyme exfoliation—the perfect treatment to rid the skin of the effects of summer without any downtime. Pumpkin is excellent for all skin types, but especially for those with environmental damage caused by the sun. Pumpkin is rich in vitamin A, which soothes and softens the skin, and vitamin C, an antioxidant that can help protect against free radical damage caused by the sun. Pumpkin is packed with natural enzymes to help dissolve dead skin cells and alpha hydroxy acids which increase cell turnover to help brighten and smooth the skin. Antioxidants found in pumpkin help to fight against free radical damage caused by environmental pollutants and UV light that breaks down the connective collagen and elastin that hold our skin together. This breakdown may result in premature wrinkles and other signs of aging. A good intake of antioxidant carotenoids in one’s diet from vegetables, such as pumpkin, has been shown to protect cells from premature aging and minimize scaling and rough-textured skin. Additionally, Pumpkin contains a good amount of B vitamins, mainly niacin and folate.

Pumpkin is also rich in folate, which is needed in red blood cell development and healthy circulation. This is important for the skin to absorb oxygen and nutrients more effectively, in order to increase cell growth and renewal. Some skin conditions, such as seborrheic dermatitis and vitiligo, have been linked to folate deficiency. Pumpkin is a great source of minerals such as potassium, manganese, magnesium, iron, copper, and zinc which can be beneficial for healthy skin. Copper is another mineral that is important in collagen and elastin production. It is involved in creating melanin in the body, which provides pigment in both skin and hair. Color pigmentation problems may be associated with a copper deficiency in the diet. Zinc is also an essential mineral for healthy skin. Dietary zinc is said to help regulate excessive sebum production in the follicles, and increasing zinc intake is often reported to help clear up acne problems. Zinc is also vital for wound healing, is anti-inflammatory, and may assist with skin sensitivities such as dermatitis. Zinc helps protect cell membranes, maintain collagen, fight acne, and promote cell renewal.

Rid your skin of summer’s wear and tear without any downtime, load up on topical antioxidant skin protection, and focus on combating those pesky breakouts. Keep your eyes peeled for “Fall in Love with Pumpkin” specials at all Village Spas.

Niacin in the skin improves circulation, which helps provide nutrients and stimulate skin cell turnover. Clients with acne problems may respond well to increasing their niacin intake.

HYDRATION IN THE

SKIN

DEHYDRATION AND HYALURONIC ACID (HA)

There is a difference between dehydrated skin and dry skin. Dehydrated skin lacks water. Dry skin lacks in oil production. Ashley Lew The Spa at DC Ranch Village Lead Aesthetician

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is the main ingredient in all hydrating skin care products. It is the active ingredient in all fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm. HA plumps, lifts, hydrates, and firms the skin. HA is a naturally occurring carbohydrate in the human body. HA has the ability to hold up to a thousand times its weight in water. It is created synthetically for the use in skin care products. When applied topically to the skin’s surface it increases hydration and alleviates dryness. It is important for the structural support of collagen and elastin. In topical application, it helps to maintain a youthful appearance by replenishing the HA content in skin, which diminishes with age, contributing to significant dryness, sagging, and wrinkles. Physical signs of dehydrated skin: • Itchy patches

24 | BET TERLIFE fall 2017

• Dull skin • Flaky skin • Dark circles around the eyes • Sensitive, irritated skin • Pronounced lines and wrinkles

Intraceuticals Professional Oxygen Infusion Treatment DC Ranch Village spa offers a treatment specifically targeted to treat dehydrated skin. Intraceuticals Rejuvenation treatment is available in either a 60- or 90-minute facial. The 90-minute includes either dermaplane or microdermabrasion. Your aesthetician will decide which exfoliation method is best for your skin. The Intraceuticals Oxygen Treatment is not only a quick fix but offers long-lasting results, because of a process called hyaluronic layering. This treatment is especially beneficial for dry, dehydrated skin but is stellar for all skin types and concerns. This facial is a perfect treat for those who travel a lot for work and/or play, post-peel, post-microneedling, and especially immediately post-fractional and Clear and Brilliant laser treatments. In fact, the Intraceuticals Oxygen Treatment can be done same day as Microneedling as well as Clear and Brilliant or fraxel laser treatment to speed up the recovery time and help the skin heal more gracefully, decreasing down time. Intraceuticals Oxygen Treatment is the perfect treatment before any big event such as a wedding or reunion, or if you will be in front of the camera. Oxygen treatment is available in a series. For optimal results, clients should come in once a week for six weeks in order to properly layer and build up HA in the skin. In order to main-

tain thereafter, clients should return every four weeks. Rejuvenate and Opulence are the two main oxygen treatments that are available at the DC Ranch Village Spa. Rejuvenate serum used in this treatment contain HA, green tea, and the powerful antioxidant vitamins A, C, and E. The treatment focuses on targeting premature aging, fine lines, expression lines, dehydration, pore size, elasticity, and dark circles. Opulence contains the above ingredients as well as superconcentrated vitamin C and other botanical brighteners. Not only does it focus on firming, lifting, hydrating, and smoothing out the skin, it also helps to brighten as well, by softening the appearance of hyperpigmentation and melasma.

Professional Skincare Products that Contain Hyaluronic Acid HYLA3D by Jan Marini ($125) contains three different-sized molecules (HA layering), peptides, and antioxidants to boost collagen production and elasticity, and restore hydration while reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles for a more youthful, vibrant glow.

HA5, by SkinMedica ($178) provides immediate smoothing in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and supports the skin’s natural ability to replenish its own HA. HA5 delivers immediate and long-lasting benefits throughout the day, with its proprietary time-released HA. HA5 improves the appearance of texture and roughness and contains antioxidants, flower stem cell extracts, and peptides. Rejuvenate serum ($149), hydration gel ($88) and moisture binding cream ($69) all by Intraceuticals, together provide hyaluronic layering. Each product contains a different sized HA molecule in order to layer HA within the skin for maximum penetration and benefits when used simultaneously. Each of these products contain HA as well as green tea and antioxidants. Moisture Binding Cream contains shea butter as well for moisture. Intraceuticals offers a starter kit of these beauties for $149. Perfect for your gym bag or carry-on luggage. Ashley Lew has 11 years of experience working with Intraceuticals and 16 years of experience working with Jan Marini Skin Care. Stop by the spa to book your next appointment or come chat with Ashley or one of our other Aestheticians, any of whom would be happy to, help you find hyaluronic acid home care product(s) best suited for your skin.

IS

EYEBROW MICROBLADING RIGHT FOR YOU?

Eyebrows are one of the most defining features of a person’s face. Lately, audacious eyebrows have become a focal point of recent beauty trends. Whether you prefer yours thick and bold, or arched and precise, it seems that everyone is obsessed with having their brows be at their absolute best! Arlene Dicks DC Ranch Village Spa Aesthetician

What if you aren’t naturally blessed with model-esque brows? Are you doomed to sparse, patchy, asymmetrical eyebrows? Do you have to fill them in every day, living in fear that with one wrong move you’ll swipe or sweat away your brows?

26 | BET TERLIFE fall 2017

If you aspire to have Kendall Jenner or Jessica Alba brows, thanks to microblading, we’ve been given a solution that allows you to have the brows you have always dreamed of in a very natural-looking way. Microblading is a semi-permanent eyebrow procedure carried out by a qualified technician using a special hand tool with needles positioned in a way that operates very much like a blade. Pigment is then deposited into the skin, allowing the technician to create crisp, hair-like strokes that resemble natural eyebrow hairs. With good skin and with proper aftercare, the results of the treatment typically last 12 – 18 months. So, now that microblading has piqued your interest, you’re probably wondering, “Is Microblading right for me?” The process goes far beyond finding the right technician. It’s just as important to determine whether your skin is ready to be

treated. The safety and effectiveness of the microblading process has everything to do with the integrity of the skin itself. The goal is to ensure that you receive the best possible results from your treatment. This is heavily reliant on your skin being healthy, strong, and calm. Unfortunately, pre-existing skin conditions and/or some skin treatments can heavily compromise the effectiveness of microblading. So, before you schedule your appointment, read the following pointers below to find out if microblading is right for you... Skin Complications If you have skin which is prone to complications with eczema, psoriasis, keratosis pilaris, and dermatitis, your skin is constantly flaking, itching, or aggravated. Chances are, your skin is in a constant state of unrest and/or is shedding and is not suitable for semi-permanent cosmetic makeup. Ultimately, the skin may not hold the pigment well. Chronic Conditions The same goes for conditions like chronic acne and rosacea. The inherent nature of this type of skin causes easy bleeding, which once again means your skin will not retain the color from microblading very well.

Excessively oily skin can cause the fine hair strokes to blur together and give an unwanted solid effect instead of a naturally feathered look. State of Skin If your skin is sensitive, it is likely to be easily aggravated and bleed easily. A good way to know if your skin is sensitive is if turns pink very easily from a little scratch. If your skin has excessively large pores, specifically in the region of the eyebrows and forehead (aka the T-Zone), the color will blur and result in a powdered look. Along similar lines, hair strokes will not lay properly on skin with deep wrinkles, which can make the overall appearance uneven. Moles, bumps, piercings, and generally raised skin around the eyebrows will also not be able to retain color well.

It is important to know that the results of your semi-permanent makeup will be based on the health and quality of your skin. Results will vary from person to person, and if you have a pre-existing skin condition or are on medications, you may still be eligible for a procedure but should adjust your expectations based on your situation. Like with any procedure, every person is unique and will react differently.

A Few Considerations.... Botox Get microblading done BEFORE you get Botox so your muscles will be in a normal state of movement. Alternatively, if you regularly use Botox, you will need to wait approximately three weeks after Botox before having the microblading procedure in order to allow the Botox to settle in. Vacationing Microblading is a form of semi-permanent cosmetic makeup and therefore is considered a mild injury to the skin, which takes time to heal. If you are planning to go on a vacation involving sun, sweating, and swimming, make sure you give your skin two weeks to heal post-microblading before showing off your newly microbladed brows on the beach!

LIFE’S BETTER

at the Village...

The goal of every Village Club is to connect people through rich and rewarding experiences. I don’t think I truly realized what that meant until now. After 17 years of being connected to the Village, I’m leaving knowing there will never be another place or group of people who could do so much for one person.

28 | BET TERLIFE fall 2017

I moved to Arizona in my 20s for a job I never thought I’d get. The day after Christmas, I boarded a plane alone and said goodbye to the Bay Area…the only place I had ever lived. I remember being scared that I didn’t know a soul in the Valley of the Sun. How was I going to meet people? How was I going to make friends? There was only so much time I could spend in the newsroom. I took to the yellow pages— yes I said yellow pages—to find a place to belong. I had never joined a health club before, but the pictures of the Gainey Village looked nice and the people in the pictures seemed happy. I thought, why not give that a try? When I arrived at Gainey I remember saying to myself, “There’s nothing like this in the Bay Area”. Gainey looked more like a resort than a health club. I joined immediately of course, and got into a routine that made me feel like Arizona was becoming more like home. About a year into my membership, I met the man who would later become my husband while I was working out on the exercise mats. My husband refers to that day as the last time he ever did a sit-up. We married about a year and a half later, and the Village became the center of our social circle. We went to every party and probably spent more time at Gainey than our own home. After having a baby, the Village was the first place we went to show her off and the first place we ever left Madison to be cared for by someone other than family. The girls in the Tot Stop were amazing. As our social circle at the Village

grew so did our daughter. The first birthday party she ever attended was at the Village, her first swim lesson, and the only summer camp she ever attended was at the Village. Well, she tried another camp for a week but it just didn’t compare. We came back to the Village. By the time our daughter started school full time, I began working in the Kid’s Club at DC Ranch and became the director after four years. That was nine years ago. I’ve never loved a job more or felt more fulfilled. The members, the employees, and the overall experience the Village provides goes beyond just connecting people. It gave me many friendships, a husband, sanity for a few hours a day when our daughter was going through the “Terrible Twos,” a second career, and a lifetime of experiences I will forever cherish. As our family heads off to our new adventure in San Diego, I leave here grateful for my Village life and only hope that other members will have as great as an experience as I have had. Life really is… better at the Village. Till we meet again, Kim Miller

MIND, BODY, AND

ELECTRIC SOL

For Camelback member Ed Sweet, exercise is all about pursuing crazy dreams.

30 | BET TERLIFE summer fall 2017 2017

Last year, at age fifty, Ed Sweet released his first musical album as Electric Sol, and started performing at clubs, coffee houses, and private residences in the Valley. “I used to sing when I was four or five, but I moved on to other things when I was about eleven,” he recalls. “I guess I could look back on my life as a missed opportunity, or I can be grateful that I’m healthy enough to pursue my renewed interest in music now.”

We caught up with Ed after an afternoon workout to talk about the benefits of exercise on creativity and overall health. the village: What’s your favorite time to go to the gym?

ed sweet: I like to go when it’s pretty empty, so the best times for me are mid-to-late morning or mid-afternoon. I like to get in and out in an hour or less if I can, and if I run into people I know I always end up spending more time than I give myself!

Ed says that consistent exercise has given him a good work ethic and has made it possible for him to try new things. “I know that most people don’t start a music career at my age, but I feel strong and healthy, so why not give it a shot? Physically, I feel the same as I did twenty-five or thirty years ago, and hopefully I’m a lot smarter than I was back then!”

What do you typically do at the gym? I’ll warm up for five or ten minutes on the elliptical machine, weight train for 20 minutes or so, and then do anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes of cardio. My favorite machine is The Curve, which us upstairs by the rowing machines. I know you’re only supposed to stay on it for five minutes at a time, but I could stay on it all day. The other great machine is the Jacob’s Ladder. It kills me.

Ed has always been a bit of an eccentric, working as an advertising copywriter and ghostwriter for the majority of his career. “I love writing books for people because you get to crawl inside their heads and tell their stories the way they’d want to tell them if they had the time or the ability to write them themselves.” Ed mainly writes business and self-help books for successful clients who have great stories to tell but are too busy to write them down.

How often do you go to the Village? I try to get there every day, but that’s usually not practical due to deadlines or just feeling like I need a day off. So if I have the intention of going every day, I’m usually able to get there four or five times a week. I know my body well enough to know when to do a heavier workout or when I’d be better off taking it a little easier. Either way, going to the Club always helps me relieve stress and get more energized for work.

Going to the Club always helps me relieve stress and get more energized for work. Does exercise help your creative process? I’d have to say it does, especially if I’m stuck on something and just spinning my wheels at my desk. I really don’t think about anything else when I’m exercising other than the task at hand, so it can be very meditative. Sometimes I’ll get a random burst of inspiration at the Club, like a lyric line or a song idea. But no matter what, I always feel like I’m ready to resume working when I get back home. Do you listen to music when you work out? Either that or talk radio. Now that I’m making my own music, I sometimes listen to songs that inspire my own songwriting, or songs that I’m interested in covering. What music is influencing you these days? I like listening to new alternative music, so I’ll put Sirius XMU on the radio when I’m not listening to Howard Stern or Rush Limbaugh. My 15-year-old daughter turns me on to all kinds of great music, too, from artists new and old like The Strokes and The Last Shadow Puppets. My daughter has really great musical taste and an exceptional ear, which makes her a great singer.

Where can we hear your music and see you play? All my music is available online via iTunes, Spotify, or my own website, electricsolmusic. com. I have one album out, eponymously called Electric Sol, and I’ll be releasing some new music this summer. I’ve played downtown at The Lost Leaf and Songbird Café, and I’m hoping to have a show at The Listening Room this fall. My favorite gigs, however, are at people’s houses. I never knew that house concerts were a thing, but they are! There very intimate and memorable experiences, and I think they’re fun for the host, the guests, and the performer. Basically, the host invites about 20 friends to a party. I mingle with the guests for an hour, perform an hour-long set in the living room or back yard, and then hang out a bit longer before packing up and saying good night. I’m always looking to do more of those, so if anyone’s interested they should contact me at electricsolmusic@gmail.com.

Will she follow in your footsteps? I hope she pursues music, but I’d never force her to do it. I think what I do embarrasses her a little bit, but I hope seeing me practice and work hard to create things provides a good example for whatever she decides to do when she’s older. One day I’d like to work on some music together with her!

Do you think you’ll ever earn a living as a musician? Well, I already earn a living from my writing, so I guess it’s possible that I could earn a living from my songwriting.

What’s your music like? It’s constantly evolving, but I’d say it’s a brilliant mix of pop, indie rock, EDM, R&B, and blue-eyed soul—all wrapped into one! I’m a child of the 1980s, so I know those influences are there. I’ve been told that my music sounds like Squeeze, Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, Matthew Sweet (no relation), Morrissey, etc.
