It is a very exciting time for all the Village Heath Clubs and Spas. At Camelback, we have renovated the locker rooms and added a new performance center. At DC Ranch, we are expanding the free weight area. Ocotillo continues to increase the Village family programming in Chandler. Here at Gainey, we are adding a new Crossfit/ small group training center and a new Pilates and Group Fitness area on the second floor of the current Training Center. Company-wide we continue to look for new ways to add value to your membership. Watch for a brand new, healthier menu in May at all the the cafes. We have added a new small group fitness training program called FIT at all club locations. Also watch for the MyZone training systems in select group fitness (not exercise) classes, cardio rooms, and training areas. To add to the technology aspect in all of the clubs, we have improved our WiFi and introduced the new Village app. As always, one of the best ways to rejuvenate yourself is to visit one of our Village Spas and Salons. We would love nothing more than to assist you in anyway with any of our additions or current programs. Please feel free to reach out to any team member with question regarding all the new changes.

WEIGHT ROOM

ETIOUETTE 201 SOME UNWRITTEN RULES TO HELP PRESERVE EVERYONE’S WEIGHT ROOM EXPERIENCE

Don’t drop the weights on the floor Wipe down your equipment after you are finished using it

6

Often exercisers will stand directly in front of the rack, obstructing other members from accessing their equipment or returning it to its proper location. When picking up that pair of dumbbells and doing curls, shrugs, etc., take a step back to a location where others may freely pass. This will ensure everyone can safely and effectively perform their workout without waiting on others to finish their set.

When done with equipment, re-rack it or restore it to its proper location Be polite and patient while waiting on others who are using equipment

8 | BET TERLIFE spring 2016

5

Don’t mark off equipment you aren’t using at the moment

When using dumbbells, barbells, kettlebells, etc., try not to stand in front of the rack

7

In many instances exercisers will mark off two or more pieces and reserve them for the duration of their exercise. This creates an environment where other people do not get to work in or follow the exercise routine they had planned. When using two pieces of equipment, do not place your personal items on one piece while away using the other for minutes at a time. Be polite by removing all items that would obstruct or deter others from working in.

Cell phones should be used like salt and pepper—sparingly Things such as phone calls, social media, texting, and selfies should be avoided. Your fellow members come to the gym in most cases to reduce stress and unplug from the world. Many exercisers in 2016 will have their cell phones on them for music; just make sure to be polite when doing so, and keep the phone usage to a minimum while on the equipment or the floor. While there are many other unwritten rules, these will serve as a few reminders that we all contribute to the experience and share in the responsibility of preserving it. Enjoy your workout! Aaron Maxwell, DC Ranch Village Fitness Director

VINYASA YOGA PRACTICING AND TEACHING AT THE VILLAGE Let’s talk about flexibility. Why is it so important? Most aerobic and strength-training programs inherently cause your muscles to contract and flex. That’s why regular stretching is a powerful part of any exercise program. Consider this: • Stretching increases flexibility. Flexible muscles can improve your daily performance. Tasks such as lifting packages, bending to tie your shoes, or playing with your kids become easier and less exhausting. • Stretching improves the range of motion of your joints. Good range of motion keeps you in better balance, which will help keep you mobile and less prone to falls—and the related injuries—especially as you age. • Stretching improves circulation. Stretching increases bloodflow to your muscles and organs. Improved circulation can speed recovery after muscle injuries. • Stretching can relieve stress. Stretching relaxes the tense muscles that often accompany stress.

Jo Svendblad, Village Yoga Instructor

We believe that flexibility helps to provide us with better quality of life, by increasing relaxation mentally and physically. It helps in reducing muscle tension (knots) and soreness, and improves our posture.

I love to practice and teach Vinyasa Yoga at the Village. JO SVENDBLAD

spring 2016 BET TERLIFE | 9

Some people are more flexible than others, and NO not everyone has to be able to do the splits. It’s really just about staying in a healthy range of motion with our body as we grow just a little older every day. We can increase our flexibility with certain exercises, such as yoga, Pilates, or plain old floor stretching.

By using our own bodies to create resistance and energy, we continuously improve and maintain a healthy range of motion in our joints. Maintaining flexibility in an elderly person, for example, can mean that if they fall they decrease severe injury, because they are flexible enough to react quicker and brace for their fall. Flexibility reduces our risk of injury significantly regardless of age, gender, or weight.

GOOD LOOKIN’

PICKING

BERRIES for HEALTH

10 | BET TERLIFE spring 2016

Berries are not just nature’s sweet, tart, bite-sized summer treats—they pack a powerful nutritious punch! Berries are plum full of fiber and vitamin C, and are anti-inflammatory. They are a source of phytochemicals and antioxidants that have been shown to help fight against and prevent heart disease and cancer. I commonly hear people say they have trouble finding berries that stay fresh or are not already going bad! So my best advice is to buy them fresh and in season in the summer months, and look for firm, plump ones without bruises. Moisture harms berries as they are highly susceptible to mold.

Choose berries that are dry and not leaking juice, which may hasten spoilage. To extend berries’ shelf life, wash them just before eating. Freeze fresh berries immediately or store unwashed in the refrigerator for three to six days. Frozen berries are a great alternative to fresh, as they are picked at their peak of freshness and retain all of their nutrients, whereas when fresh fruits begin to go bad they decrease in nutrients and increase in sugar! This is why we tend to use overripe, brown bananas in sweet breads! Berries are great for a low glycemic index, those looking to manage their weight, and diabetics watching their blood sugar! They are low in carbohydrates and calories and high in water. A few great berries to choose from include: blackberries, blueberries, currants, boysenberries, cranberries, raspberries, and strawberries! Blueberries are one of the most nutritious options as they are a great source of vitamin C and fiber, as well as being full of anthocyanins, resveratrol, and alphatocopherol, which may provide heart-health and cancer-fighting benefits! Add them to Greek yogurt, smoothies, salads, or steel-cut oats to add sweetness and beautiful color to any dish! Brittney Clarizio, MS, RD, CPT, Village Registered Dietitian

GYROTONIC EASE TIGHTNESS IN YOUR MUSCLES

“Gyrotonic is not only fantastic for stretching and lengthening but is also physically therapeutic, bringing your body back into balance—in just one session,” says Kate Madrigal, a Camelback Village Gyrotonic client. Ever watch a cat move and notice how it can move freely in different ranges of motion with ease and grace; no restriction? The cat is the basic model Juliu Horvath used in creating Gyrotonic®. Gyrotonic incorporates principals of swimming, dance, yoga, tai chi, and gymnastics through continuous circular movements that create freedom in the body’s fascia, muscles and joints.

14 | BET TERLIFE spring 2016

Juliu Horvath developed “Yoga for Dancers” in 1977 while rehabilitating himself. He suffered from Achilles tendon injury and herniated discs as a result of being a professional ballet dancer. “Yoga for Dancers” expanded into Gyrotonic.

As a dancer, Juliu saw the benefit of moving the body in spirals instead of only linear or single plane movements. Most forms of fitness training and everyday movements tend to limit our movements to a single-plane. Gyrotonic takes a more natural, organic spinal spiraling approach to training so that your mind has to learn to speak to your body in order to create a fully integrated physical system that facilitates and maintains mobility, which is often lost over time given poor movement patterns and the rigors of modern life. Gina Sproviero and Linda Hertzberg are two of only a handful of fully certified Gyrotonic trainers in the Valley. Both trainers have over 12 years of experience each using this system at Camelback Village.

Gyrotonic training uses the Gyrotonic expansion system which is a double pulley tower, a three-dimensional traction system that mobilizes your spine and allows for greater freedom of movement in all your joints. The Gyrotonic repertoire of exercises, coupled with the expert hands-on help of a trained instructor, will help ease tightness in your muscles. Golfers, tennis players, amateur athletes and people of all ages will appreciate the greater fluidity of movement after only a The independent few weeks of training on the tower.

KIDS

WAYS TO ENGAGE KIDS DURING SUMMER VACATION

You know the scene. It’s the first week of summer, and your fifth grader is somehow playing Minecraft for the sixth day in a row. Your first grader has pulled out every single toy from the toy bins, and there are crayons and markers and scissors (oh my!), scattered all over the kitchen table. Oh, and it’s 110 degrees outside. The marathon that is the school year is over, and the days of having a locked-in schedule have come to an end. The repetitive days that used to feel like there was never enough hours in them, now feel as though they never end. And before you know it, you start hearing those three dreaded words: “Mom, I’m bored.” Most kids need a little prompting and encouragement to help them enjoy their summer. Here are four ways to get your kids excited for their summer vacation.

As mentioned early on, kids are on a rather set schedule throughout the school year. They get up at the same time, eat and sleep at the same time, and probably do their homework at the same time. As the summer days set in with no real schedule, it can be rather challenging to keep it fresh with new activities, games, places to go, etc. The internet is overflowing with fun, creative activities for all ages. You may also research local art and dance studios, see what types of activities they offer at your local library, or simply take a drive to a cooler part of the state and let them get outside and enjoy nature!

Give them freedom.

Ask for your kids’ input.

Throughout the school year, kids are on a tight schedule. They’re told what to do and where to be at almost all hours of the day. Although it wouldn’t be beneficial to throw out a schedule completely during the summer, try creating a space for your kids to have some freedom to explore on their own and set their own boundaries. Have a summer schedule that provides some structure, but also the necessary time for your kids to choose their own activities.

Let them explore responsibility.

Kids want to be heard, and as adults we sometimes forget this. They crave attention, and it may seem like a no - brainer, but how often do really stop and give our kids the undivided attention they want, need, and deserve? Set aside some time each day, without any electronics, and talk with your kids. Ask them questions. What are they enjoying about their summer? What would they like to do more of? What is something they would change? Involving your kids in decision-making is another important key to their development. It not only encourages them to ask for others’ feedback, suggestions, or opinions, but it will also give them a sense of belonging.

Kristin Bullock Gainey Village Youth Services Director kbullock@dmblcubs.com

spring 2016 BET TERLIFE | 15

Kids love to act like adults. How often do you find your kids mimicking your every move, wanting to help you cook, wanting to wear your clothes, or wanting your iPhone or iPad? Young kids can find pleasure in even the most mundane chores: vacuuming, dusting, sweeping, and more. These responsibilities are not only important to young kids’ development, but they are typically tasks that as adults, we may find zero pleasure in. Try creating a summer chore list that involves some sort of point system. Once your kids accumulate a certain number of points, then reward them with an activity or a prize of some sort.

Keep it fresh.

VILLAGE SPA TREATMENTS A GLOSSARY OF THE SPA BAR OFFERINGS

All the Village Spas now offer Spa Bar Treatments designed to maximize results with every facial service. While not all services are available at all locations, here is a short explanation of some of our most popular offerings. Dermaplane

Oxygen Treatment

A gentle resurfacing procedure. While a surgical tool is used to remove the layer of dead skin and soft vellus hair, this is a non-invasive treatment. Contrary to popular belief, the removing of this hair does not cause hair growth to increase or become coarse. Make-up will appear smoother and you will leave with immediately visible results. This is perfect for most skin types.

A machine helps oxygen deeply penetrate the skin while infusing serums to hydrate, repair, and treat skin with radiant, glowing results. This is excellent in combination with Dermaplane or Microdermabrasion.

20 | BET TERLIFE spring 2016

Microdermabrasion

NuFace Treatment Microcurrent technology tightens and lifts facial muscles and Red LED Light Therapy stimulates collagen production.

Also a resurfacing treatment, this service leaves the villous hair behind. Our new sterile diamond-head machines rub off the dead cells at the top skin layer, followed by vacuuming/suction removing particles along with any dirt and dead skin.

All of the treatments can be performed in conjunction with facials or peels depending on skin type, and improve the skin’s texture and firmness.

Microneedling

There is no downtime associated with any of these services. Look for monthly specials and seasonal treatments that utilize these methods at each of our locations.

A roller is used to create channels that allow product to penetrate more effectively. This treatment stimulates collagen production and cell growth. Recommended for treatment of hyperpigmentation, fine lines, and deep wrinnkles, it is a great way to reduce the appearance of pores, stretch marks, and scarring.

CHALLENGE YOURSELF with a NEW SPORT this SPRING

Are you looking for a new and interesting way to exercise? You may not realize it, but the Village Clubs offer a number of sports that are fun and that will help you burn a lot of calories! Fencing

Squash

If you are on the fence about trying fencing, don’t be! The sport is great for strengthening muscles, improving cardiovascular function, and challenging your mind, while being a lot of fun! Camelback and DC Ranch have programs that run year round for adult and junior fencers. If you would like to try the sport, we are offering a 25% discount on your introductory package through June, 2016. That’s a $50 savings on four private lessons to get you started. Please contact Judi Buterbaugh at jbuterbaugh@ dmbclubs.com for information at Camelback Village or Amanda Ware at aware@dmbclubs.com at DC Ranch.

Not only a very healthy and delicious vegetable, but also one of the best sports for getting the most calories burned in an hour! Squash uses a longer, more slender racquet than racquetball, and a ball that doesn’t have much bounce. Because of this, you have to move faster and lunge more while working all your major muscle groups. According to exercise.com, a 200-pound person can burn over 1,090 calories in one hour of play! Now that’s some serious calorie burning! Our Squash Pro, Viktor Berg, is eager to help you get started. He can be reached at vberg@dmbclubs.com. Let’s get you out of the garden and on to the courts!

Racquetball

Are you looking for a way to get good exercise while protecting your joints? Swimming is a great option for almost everyone! All you need to get a good workout is a suit, goggles, and the pool. For those of you who are comfortable swimming lengths of the pool, why not try a Master’s Swim Class to up your game? Camelback Village offers classes on Tuesday and Thursdays from 5:45 – 6:45 am. and 6 – 7 pm as well as a noon class on Wednesdays. All classes are free with your membership and no registration is necessary.

Remember racquetball? That game you used to play as a kid? Why not get back on the court and try it again? It’s not only a fun game, but a super workout. According to Diet and Fitness Today, a 200-pound man playing an hour of racquetball will burn 950 calories, depending on the level of competition. You’ll be working all major muscle groups, while having a great time. Camelback Village will be offering “Teach and Play” adult and junior classes starting in April. Come out and see what all the fun is about! How about a sport that’s easy to learn, is very social and burns a lot of calories? Of course we are talking about tennis! Camelback, DC Ranch, and Ocotillo offer affordable beginner lessons for adults. You’ll learn the all the basics and be able to play games by the end of the session. See you on the court!

HELLO

A LOT OF THE MEMBERS HAVE BECOME MY FRIENDS— that’s one of the best things about my job!

YOU’VE GOT A

FRIEND

22 | BET TERLIFE summer 2015

Gainey Activities Director Shelly McGann has been welcoming Village members with open arms for 20 years. Back in 1996, a fresh-faced Shelly McGann took a job at the Arizona Athletic Club (AAC) in Tempe. DMB Sports Clubs bought the tennis facility and health club a year later and asked Shelly to stay. The club is no longer part of the Village family, but it gave a young, enthusiastic woman from Wisconsin with a Sports Management degree a chance to do what she did best: organize athletic-oriented social events. After six years at the AAC, Shelly moved to the Gainey Village. “Coming to Gainey was exciting,” Shelly recalls. “The members didn’t really have a lot of social events to choose from, so I was able to create new programs from the ground up.”

Shelly talked to the members and discovered that they liked a lot of the same things she did, including hikes, golf outings, ski trips, and attending sporting events and happy hours. Shelly grew up hiking and skiing— and played tennis, basketball, and ran track in high school—and was more than happy to share her love of an active lifestyle with a group of likeminded fitness enthusiasts. “As a kid in Wisconsin, I wasn’t allowed to stay in the house,” Shelly says with a smile. “My mom was athletic and my dad was outdoorsy, so they encouraged us to go out and play as much as possible.” We talked with Shelly—after one of her daily StairMaster workouts—about the love she has for her job and the people she’s met along the way.

the village: Why are the events you create so important for Village members? shelly mcgann: The kind of social events we do really set the Village apart from other health clubs. More than anything else, we want people to make friendships while they’re at the club. You hear all this talk about “social media” these days, but there’s no substitute for real human interaction. It’s definitely something that the members crave, because most of our events fill to capacity. We’ll get 60 people to a wine tasting on a Thursday night! What are the most popular events? The biggest things right now are the annual trips we take to Telluride and Havasupai Falls. The Telluride trip has been going on for 14 years and we accommodate about 110 people now. We’re thinking of adding an additional trip for families next year. We started the Havasupai hiking and camping trip about three years ago and it always sells out fast. A lot of people have never done the hike before and once they see the pictures or talk to someone who goes they want to experience it for themselves. For me, Havasupai is the number one bucket-list item of things to do in Arizona. Just seeing those amazing waterfalls is such an incredible experience.

Shelly makes a point of exercising on the StairMaster to stay in shape.

What about your more local events? The monthly hikes are a great way to see a beautiful area, get a workout in and meet new people. They are very social and we always go to breakfast or lunch afterwards. It’s so funny, because I remember hiking with my parents and saying to them, “Why do we have to do this, it isn’t fun!” I never thought back then that it would become my favorite outdoor activity and that I’d be leading hikes for up to 70 people! Do you ever go out of the country? We added the Village Travel Club in the past two years, which offers international bucket-list trips that people have. Members have hiked to Machupicchu in Peru and stayed in a castle in Tuscany, Italy. This year we have a hiking trip planned to Mont Blanc, biking in the Loire Valley in France, a cultural trip to Ireland and a repeat of the Italy Castle trip. The feedback has been really positive and we hope it will continue to grow! Do you go on any of the out-of-town trips? Since traveling is one of my passions, I definitely try to go on at least one of the international trips each year. I plan on doing the Mont Blanc hiking trip and hopefully the biking trip, too! You mention the term bucket list a lot. What’s on yours? Well, there’s one less thing on it because I hiked Machu Picchu recently to celebrate my 50th birthday. It’s been number one on my bucket list for a long time and it definitely exceeded my expectations. I’d also like to explore New Zealand and Australia, and there are so many places in the United States that I still need to see. What do you do to stay in shape so you can lead all these hikes and travel so actively? I exercise every day at about 6 am. I’ve always been an early morning person and it’s a great way to start the day! I get on the StairMaster for 30 to 40 minutes and read the sports section, which is kind of a running joke because it’s the only part of the paper I read. How important is working out to you? It’s my mental therapy. If I don’t get to work out, I feel like my mood is different. Even if I can just get 30 minutes of cardio in a day, I’m a happy camper!

You must have made a ton of friends at the Village yourself! A lot of the members have become my friends—that’s one of the best things about my job! I get to meet so many amazing and interesting people. It’s great working with a lot of young people because it keeps me young and we teach each other things. And we have a lot of fun too! Do you think you’ll work at the Village forever? It’s looking that way. I can’t imagine doing anything else!

The view was breathtaking on the 2015 Machupicchu hike in Peru.

What’s the best thing about your career? Seeing people make friends, especially when they’re new to the area. I met one woman from Chicago during her first week as a Village member about two years ago. I encouraged her to go on the next hike we were doing, and to come to some of the other events we had coming up. Now she has so many friends, it’s so neat to see! This lady tells me all the time how much she loves it here and thanks me for helping her to get involved. Planning fun and different things for the members so they can make connections really makes me happy.

BEATING THE ODDS—

CAMELBACK MEMBER AND ENTREPRENEUR BAKER MAT T COT TLE ISN’T LET TING AUTISM GET IN THE WAY OF HIS DREAMS.

24

The management at a local grocery store chain wouldn’t promote him. The military turned him down. But when a 19-year-old Matt Cottle told his mother Peggy that he always wanted to be a baker, he began a life-changing journey that’s given him incredible confidence while inspiring others along the way.

With the love and support of his mother Peggy, his father Dave, his brother, and the whole extended family, Matt completed the Southwest Autism Research & Resource Center’s (SARRC) Vocational and Life Skills Academy CulinaryWorks® program in 2010. From there, he worked one-on-one for three years with pastry chef and Rumpelstiltskin Granola founder Heather Netzloff before turning his passion for pastries into a business. “We were giving away more calories than you can believe,” says Peggy of Matt’s years of baker training. “I’ve never seen him so enthusiastic about something and I knew he was ready to make a career out of it.” Matt named his enterprise the Stuttering King Bakery. The name was inspired by the movie The King’s Speech, which relates how England’s King George VI overcame a severe speech impediment to lead his nation through World War II. “If he could overcome his disability, so can I,” Matt says proudly. Matt and his mom currently sell their wholesome, homemade baked goods wholesale to the Camelback Village, Beneficial Beans in Scottsdale, and Smoke and Joe in Cave Creek. You can also purchase them on Saturdays at Scottsdale’s Old Town Farmer’s Market, and watch Matt demonstrate his skills at the William Sonoma store at Biltmore Fashion Park on the first Friday of every month. You can also place an order for private and corporate events Valleywide, by calling 602.535.4780 or going to stutteringkingbakery.com. Like any startup, the Stuttering King Bakery has had its share of challenges and is just starting to see some positive cash flow. We talked with Matt and his mom in their kitchen as Matt was making blueberry muffins and banana macaroons to learn how this miraculous business is making an impact on the Cottle family, others affected by autism, and the community at large. the village: What made you decide to turn your passion into a business? matt cottle: Back in 2012, Arizona passed a cottage law, which made it possible for us to get things started. peggy cottle: You can run a business out of your home now, as long as you maintain your license.

like how to form an LLC and get licensed and insured. mc: When I gave my threeminute pitch at an event they called Demo Day, we received a free web site from a business called WebPT. Why is running a business better for you than a regular 9-to-5 job? pc: More than 90 percent of all autistic adults are unemployed, and the last thing we wanted was for Matt to have to rely on government programs that might run out later in his life. He’s not a victim, and this business is a way for him to make an impact beyond what he could do in a menial job for $8 an hour. mc: I’ve really found my calling, and I can express myself on my own terms. I really consider baking kind of an art form, and I get to do my art every single day. I can set my own hours and play my favorite kinds of music— jazz and Irish music—while I bake. What do you like best about baking? mc: Knowing that I’m actually good at it is the best thing. As far as specific items go, I like baking the Triple Chocolate Brownies. People really love them and they bring the money in. Is it a lot of work? mc: I get up at 5 am and sometimes I’m in the kitchen for 10 – 12 hours. But I keep my nose to the grindstone and get it done. pc: I’m a firm believer that kids with autism need a good safety net around them, made up of people who understand their specific needs. It’s a labor of love for me. How do you decide what to bake? mc: I get my ideas from recipe books and Youtube. I like trying different techniques. When did you start selling your pastries at the Village? mc: Back in October of 2015. We started out with jack-o-lantern cookies for Halloween. What are the top sellers at the club? pc: The cookies do really well, especially the double chocolate chip. Then it’s the muffins and the brownies. We really want members to try the scones, because they’re really moist and delicious and come in great flavors like Orange Cream, Cinnamon Roll and Maple Bacon Almond. mc: People at the Village really like the Blueberry Muffins. We only use fresh blueberries and add a little bit of cinnamon on top.

spring 2016 BET TERLIFE | 25

Did you know what you were getting into when you decided to start a business? pc: Not really! As a piano teacher, I honestly didn’t know much about the business stuff but I’m learning every day. What really jump-started the process was getting selected by Seed Spot, a Phoenix-based nonprofit that invests in entrepreneurs who are helping to solve social problems. mc: The day we were chosen by Seed Spot was the happiest day of my life. They only chose 15 businesses out of hundreds of applicants. I just told them about my dreams and they agreed to help us for a whole year.

What sort of services did Seed Spot provide? pc: They gave us a lot of practical training,

“I get up at 5 am and sometimes I’m in the kitchen for 10 – 12 hours. But I keep my nose to the grindstone and get it done.”

Does eating cakes and cookies conflict with living a healthy lifestyle? pc: Why do most people work out—so they can eat kale?! Everyone deserves a great snack now and then. Matt bakes everything fresh from scratch, with high-quality, natural, and locally sourced ingredients when possible. His macaroons are gluten-free, and they’re absolutely delicious. mc: I have to confess that I’m not a huge pastry eater. I’ve always preferred ice cream, actually! When do you find time to work out? mc: Now that we’re selling our baked goods at the Village, I can work out after I make my deliveries three or four days a week. I hit the bikes and the dumbbells for about an hour. pc: I’m at the Club pretty much every day, but if I don’t exercise first thing in the morning it just won’t get done. I do a lot of cardio and weight training, too, and I want to get into Pilates and Yoga. I’m motivated to stay active because I don’t want to get stiff and weak. What else do you do in your free time? mc: I like to play golf. I started when I was 17 and I’m a pretty fair golfer. You’re an artist as well as an entrepreneur, Matt. Can you talk about that? mc: In 2007 I started taking painting lessons and just took to it right away. I paint at my teachers’ house every Tuesday and Wednesday. I like painting landscapes and still lives. Lately I’ve been putting cigars in a lot of my paintings, since I like to smoke occasionally. I like making smaller paintings the best because they’re easy to travel with.

pc: His uncle got him started on that. Dave and I were cautious at first, but Matt’s made a wonderful group of friends at his favorite cigar shops. Cigars are NOT addictive, so it’s all good.

How has the business progressed since you started four years ago? pc: We’ve grown so much in the past few years, and we owe a debt of gratitude to so many people. Keith Harris, for example. He’s the father of Tim Harris, a young man with Down syndrome who ran a restaurant in Albuquerque called Tim’s Place and started Tim’s Big Heart Foundation in 2014 to help other people with intellectual disabilities. Anyway, Keith got us into the wholesale market and it’s been a big boost businesswise. Just the other day, we got a commitment from Neil Terry at Orcutt Winslow to help us with our marketing. mc: There are always surprises and challenges to deal with. It’s been great having my mom help me with everything. We have a very unique relationship. Where do you see the business going in the future? mc: In the short term, I want to get a new oven and a

van. Next year I hope I can set up shop somewhere. This November, I’m looking forward to going to Canada to speak on a panel about the ins and outs of business at the Geneva Centre for Autism International Symposium. pc: Our slogan is “Baking with a Mission,” and in the long term we’d love to find another person with autism to help us, someone who really wants to become a productive, active member of the community. Everyone deserves to be someone incredible. Do you have any advice for people who want to start their own business? mc: Keep your nose to the grindstone.

EOUILIBRIUM The Membership Equilibrium is equal parts fitness, body awareness, health, friends, family, and sheer joy. Equal amounts of relationship-building, and exceeding member expectations.

Socially speaking, the Village is unmatched. Join us for one of our many member parties and events held each year. Our happy hours, oatmeal breakfasts and expert series are just a few examples.

As Membership Director here at DC Ranch Village Health Club and Spa, I encounter a number of questions from guests and prospective members.

The Village management has a clear eye on our members, expectations, as well as anticipating what they will want in the future. We are always available for your suggestions and comments.

We engage our members with an ever-growing multitude of choices for fitness, encompassing all aspects of disciplines, and we are always expanding our fitness offerings with additional seminars and classes to augment their fitness education.

As membership associates, we interact daily with members and guests. It is always a richly rewarding experience and I am very fortunate to be a part of the dynamic team we call the Village. We must ask ourselves, are we worthy of the luxury of the Village? With equal parts what creates true happiness and truly enriched lifestyle, I hope you agree that you most certainly are. Welcome home—you are the Village!

spring 2015 BET TERLIFE | 29

They are looking for a gym, and ask for our pricing and amenities. I explain that the Village is very different from a gym experience. It encompasses an entire lifestyle—a second home—filled with friends, family, and healthy choices. A country club experience filled with luxury amenities not found in a gym. We purposely keep our membership numbers lower, which is very different from our corporate competitors.
