WELCOME, SUMMER! Don’t forget to ‘like’ Village Health Clubs & Spas on Facebook, where you’ll be privy to contests we are currently running, fitness information and Village events—everything Village!

With a fantastic first half of the year behind us, we had a great first full season with all our teams and enjoyed watching everyone competing in the various inter-club, ATA, Premier League and USTA competitions. Summer is upon us and with our summer program schedule, it is time to take advantage of our various clinics, lessons, and drop-in match plays to work on your game, interact with other members, and meet new practice partners. Our tennis pros will continue to be here all summer and will get you ready for the upcoming season.

| BET TERLIFE fall 2013

Tennis is a sport for life and a great way for your family to interact and exercise together. A week in our Summer Camp will introduce your kids to the game of tennis in a very fun, action-packed environment, leaving them with the “tennis bug” and many new friendships.

Rick Erdenberger, Vice-President Village Health Clubs & Spas, and Ocotillo General Manager and Carol Nalevanko, President, Village Health Clubs & Spas (see page 4).

Once the kids head back to school our after school and weekend junior programs will continue to improve their skills and grow their love of the game. Kids can participate as little as one day a week or several days a week, with groups being offered for every level and age of player. Our “Tennis Boot Camp” is still featured on our adult schedule and takes your cardio routine out of the gym and onto the tennis court. A fun, energetic, complete cardio workout for players of all abilities will set your weekend off on the right foot!

If you have not been to check out the DC Ranch Village Tennis Center yet, make a point to stop by soon and see what you have been missing!

“It Takes a Village” Wins ATA 4.5 Ladies Doubles Evening League

The “inaugural” season of night-time ATA tennis at DC Ranch was off to a successful start. Our ladies doubles 4.5 team took 1st place for the Winter/Spring Season proving that it really does “Take a Village.” This was the DC Ranch Village Tennis Center’s first time hosting a night-time tennis team. “At the start we didn’t know if we would have enough players to even field a team but we put our heads together and began calling friends and following up on every lead until we filled our roster. The DC Ranch Village Tennis Center’s membership has grown so much in the past couple months our team now has no such problem,” said Suzi Hetland, team captain. Competition was close and some battles were fierce but our ladies proved that you can win and still do it with style and grace. “The spirit of this team has always been about having fun and relieving stress, not adding to it, thus the, “No Drama”, motto. The camaraderie of this team is genuine,” said Shelley Tritch, co-captain. One of the funniest moments actually happened off the courts and before competition started. We were all relatively new members at the start of the season and just getting to know one another. We decided to have a practice session prior to competition one Sunday. One of our players (who will remain nameless except by her codename “Rebar”) came up to another player (Carol Nalevanko, President of The Village) and introduced herself. Rebar then heard Carol say something “employee-like” about the Tennis Center and asked Carol if she worked behind the front desk at the DC Ranch Village Tennis Center. Carol, in her usual humble way, said simply, “not really.” Keep up the good work, Carol!

SCAR Swim Success

On May 6 – 9, 2015, forty of some of the most accomplished open-water swimmers in the world descended up on Arizona to take part in the SCAR swim. Joining them was Joe Zemaitis, Village Swim Coach. SCAR is a forty-mile swimming event where participants swim on successive days: 9 miles across Saguaro Lake, 9 miles across Canyon Lake, 17 miles across Apache Lake, and a 6-mile night swim in Roosevelt Lake. The total distance was equivalent to approximately 2,900 lengths of the Village pool! Coach Joe’s aggregate finishing time of 18 hours 32 minutes was good enough for 5th place in the Men’s division!

EVERY DAY TRIATHLON

Spring Training

Village Triathletes were busy this spring racing and training before the heat set in. Many members competed in events such as The Boston Marathon (Susan Krupa and Tracy Britton), the Marquee & the Tempe International Triathlons in Tempe, the St George 70.3 in Utah, the Open Water Swim Series and the Splash ‘n Dashes, and the 9th Annual Tri for the Cure AZ. This summer members are headed all over the country and beyond to race. Ocotillo Programs Director Rodney Kinney and his wife Renee are competing in the Hawaii 70.3 while training for fall Ironmans; Lindsay & Wade Rusk, Scott Britton, and Krista LaPan are racing the IMCDA in June; George Gresham is racing both the Boulder 70.3 and the Boulder IM this summer; Preston & Clem Miller, Christina Catalano, Tami Romano, and Mary Jorden are racing the Austria 70.3 while training for IMFL. The Gainey Village hosted a Kids Triathlon and Kids Triathlon Clinic this past April, when 28 kids came out and raced; for many, it was their first taste of the sport (ages 5 – 13). Look for a fall Kids Tri at both DC Ranch and Gainey Villages later this year.

Alcatraz/Golden Gate Swims

It was a tale of two swims on two different days for a dozen or so Village members who took part in this 9th annual event in April. Two miles apart—but worlds apart in what to expect. The 1.4-mile Alcatraz swim saw a rare clear San Francisco dawn, calm water, and 100% finishing rate from the 80-member Swim FAST group based in Phoenix. The 1.2-mile Golden Gate Bridge Swim was windy, foggy, and choppy, with conditions about as different as you could get from the day before. Still, all swimmers finished and the weather cooperated just enough to have an awesome swim. Dates for the 10th Annual event will be April 16 – 17, 2016. Start training now!

the HOW vs the

HOW MUCH

Before beginning any exercise program it is important to first identify the fitness goals that you would like to achieve. Whether you are a beginner or an advanced lifter, perfecting the form that you use during any given exercise should be the primary focus, as opposed to how much weight you are lifting, pushing, or pulling.

8 | BET TERLIFE summer 2015

Focusing on the technique of each lift is the most difficult, but most important, component to decrease the risk of injury while working out. By consistently performing and focusing on the appropriate technique you will maximize the effects of the exercise, leading to your desired results.

Effects of Lifting Excessive Weight Weightlifting exercises are designed to target specific muscle groups. Using inappropriate weight leads to compensation, which means muscles not intended for that movement pattern may become engaged, causing unnecessary momentum.

Lifting excessively heavy weight may result in a sense of accomplishment, but it can lead to body misalignment, which can place muscles and joints in awkward positions, potentially shifting a dangerous amount of the movement to your lower back. The ability to maintain proper breathing patterns in a controlled manner while lifting excessive weights can be compromised, which may affect focus while lifting. You should be able to exhale during the heaviest phase (exertion phase) of the movement. Combat these effects by using specific grips and/or handles along with particular body positions (including hand width and/or foot stance) to assist in maintaining correct posture and preventing misalignment. Every individual benefits from specific differences to fit his or her physique, so please contact a personal trainer to learn these specific body positions, to maximize your workout.

Bodyweight Exercises You don’t need to take big risks or be a hero to make strength gains. Bodyweight exercises are not just for the entry-level exerciser. Increasing body awareness and learning/reinforcing the desired movement patterns before adding an external load to your body increases your level of success. You should also begin each workout with a bodyweight warm-up, and incorporate the same exercises and/or movement patterns before adding an external load to your body. This will stimulate the nervous system and “wake up” the muscles which need to be recruited. Working through the full range of motion may be hindered when using heavy weights, and may be easier to achieve when performing bodyweight exercises. Talk to a personal trainer at your Club about any questions you may have regarding these principles, and start seeing better results from the effort that you are already putting in.

Please contact Alissa Goldman, MS, MSCC, USAW, NASM-CPT at Gainey Village for assistance. 865.414.0921

TIPS to ensure

proper technique when lifting

Always exercise in full ranges of motion (full extension at each joint being worked) Use controlled eccentric (lengthening of the muscle) movement during each exercise Focus on the muscle group to be activated for each exercise ALWAYS engage the core muscles to increase the body’s ability to stabilize and decrease momentum

WE HEAR YOU. At the Village we are dedicated to developing lasting relationships with members and want to make sure we are aware of member concerns. Each Village member will receive an online survey four times a year. It is important that we check in with members many times throughout the year to make sure nothing has happened that may diminish The Village experience. Some suggest ions may take longer to implement or may not be possible, so please be patient if we haven’t completely solved an issue from the last time you completed a survey. Throughout this process we have been able to meet more members on a personal level and hopefully improved the overall experience at our clubs. So far this year we: • Expanded our offering of evening classes • Provide coffee all day instead of just in the morning • Increased our family and kids programs So please keep the feedback coming through our quarterly survey and our website, or stop by next time you are at the club and let us know how we are doing. Thanks again and we look forward to hearing from you.

KIDS OUT OF SCHOOL? We are in the midst of summer as the Arizona temperatures begin to rise. You may be scrambling to figure out what to do with your children all summer. Here are some helpful tips for parents to ensure a rich and rewarding experience at the Village. The pool is the place to be during these hot summer months, and you won’t want to miss out! Upgrade your membership to a Family Membership to take advantage of the pools without paying the daily rate of $7 for children under 13, or $20 for students 14 and older. Once you are on a Family Membership, children between 10 and 13 years of age* may take a class to become Junior Certified so they can use designated areas of the club without adult supervision. Just stop by the front desk to sign up for the class, and once certified, the student can, upon check-in, obtain a Junior Certification wrist band.

Our Village Clubs have become the place 22,000 members have decided they want to belong and never want to leave. Let’s all have another great summer at the Village.

*A ll guests ages 13 – 17, in addition to signing a waiver, will need their parent/guardian to sign a waiver to use the club facilities. At Camelback you have to be between the ages of 11 – 13 to become Junior Certified.

summer 2015 BET TERLIFE | 11

Parents also have the option of purchasing a student summer package. The package includes 10 passes for $50 to use for your children or guests ages 13 and under. Safety is a priority, especially during the summer. Remember to apply sunscreen in an SPF of 30 or higher…liberally and often! Please remember students must be 16 years or older to swim without adult supervision at our Village pools. This is for the safety of everyone.

KIDS

BULLYDEFENSE

ACTUALLY STARTS AT HOME

Bullying can happen anywhere from school, to outside activities, the playground, and even online. The best line of defense against bullying actually starts at home. Confidence: Your children need to feel good about themselves. Engage them in activities that they enjoy or feel successful at. Give them responsibilities that they feel they can accomplish. Most of all, praise them genuinely. Humor: Let your children know that it’s okay to laugh at themselves. Making mistakes is okay and the quirky things we do make us unique. Communication:

Have family discussions about problems at school and listen to their ideas and resolutions. Role play scenarios and act them out with each other. Ask them what they would say, what they would do, how they can get help, etc.

12 | BET TERLIFE summer 2015

5

Diversity: Introducing your children to different social groups will help them gain respect for others. Have them volunteer or help others in need. Leadership: Empower your children to speak up for themselves and others. Follow up with your school and/or organization to understand their policies and procedures for bullying. Do they have an anti-bully program? Do they have resources to help kids that are being bullied? Make sure your child also knows how to get help. Remember, it takes a Village to raise a child! JUNIORNUTRITION 14 tips to help your kids eat better

How can you help your kids eat healthier? A large part of healthy kid nutrition is related to adequate levels of physical activity.

Kids who are active do a better job making healthier food choices when compared to non-active or less-active kids. This is the same phenomenon observed in adults. Active adults tend to weigh less, have less disease, and have a healthier diet. So the first step to healthier children is to get them active one hour, seven days a week. Physical activity is any physical movement that increases heart rate, increases breathing rate, and makes them sweaty. Playing games, exercise, horseback riding, sports participation, or whatever they want to do is acceptable. Fuel input is important. Calories count. It is important to get sufficient calories that support energy needs, growth of the body, development of all vital organs, and maturation. But the fact remains that if you over-fuel the body, no matter what age, it will store the extra fuel to be used later. Check out the following website from the Baylor College of Medicine that has a calculator to estimate the calories needed for your child: https://www.bcm.edu/cnrcapps/bodycomp/energy/energyneeds_calculator.htm. Feed children as natural and organic as practical for your family. This means looking at the front of food label packages and looking at the small print list of ingredients on the back of package. Just like a contract, it’s in the small print that food manufacturers hide the truth about what is in their products. Avoid foods with genetically modified organisms (GMO), added hormones like rBGH, additives, preservatives, artificial colors, artificial sweeteners, leveling agents, excess salt, stabilizing agents, flavor enhancers, and fat substitutes. Try to select organic options when choosing foods that don’t have a thick skin. For example, eating organic apples is more important than eating organic watermelon. Feed children from your kitchen. It all begins with a cutting board, a knife, mixing bowls, pots, and pans. Most children will only eat food with flavors and textures they’re used to, so vary what you cook but have some favorites you can all agree on. A cooking class can help you get out of a rut! Limit the amount of meals you eat out. Recently in the news: the Panera Bread Company decided to remove 150 artificial ingredients from its menu offering (May 2015); Chipotle restaurants announced the removal of all GMO ingredients from their menu (April 2015); the Nestle Corporation decided to

remove synthetic flavors and colors from its candy, changing 75 of its recipes (February 2015); and Subway stated it would stop using the chemical (azodicarbonamide, pronounced az-oh-die-car-boneh-mide) in its bread (April 2014). This FDA-approved ingredient is commonly found in rubber yoga mats and the rubber soles of running shoes. Additionally, azodicarbonamide is found in over 500 food products! Children, too, are sensitive to life stressors that can lead to unhealthy food choices. Personal and inter-personal relationships, home life, work, and school all can influence how children make food choices. Respect individuality. Don’t force your children to eat something (kale) they genuinely don’t like. If your children tell you they don’t like a certain food, challenge them to help you replace it with another food and keep trying to find what they will eat. Use seasonal food choices for a variety of fruits, vegetables, and salads. Create a family list of favorite healthy recipes. This may take months or a year to develop, but use this list to set the pace for year-round family cooking. Find new sources for recipes. Magazines, cookbooks, and friends. For example, Clean Eating magazine has over 50 recipes per issue that all look great! Cooking Light magazine is an excellent source for variety. Look at websites for recipes: epicurious.com, eatingwell.com, cooks.com, whatscookingamerica. com, and eatinglight.com. Food manufacturers like tyson.com, reynoldskitchens. com, and starkist.com, have test kitchens to create recipes. Plus, they have handy information for family nutrition and physical activity. Remove or eliminate distractions when you sit down at the table. Have a conversation, turn on music, light some candles, don’t allow phones at the table, and don’t eat in front of the TV. Make and take your own treats, snacks, and beverages to the movies. Buy a food scale so your children can learn to measure foods for meal-size and snack-size portions. Eat real food and try to avoid the following: protein bars, fruit bars, fruit roll-ups, pop-tarts, energy bars, ready-to-drink protein shakes, and brightly colored packed food choices.

Below I have outlined some of our programs so that you can see what best suits you.

16 | BET TERLIFE summer 2015

TRY TENNIS TODAY: This adult program is for players who are just picking up a racket or have been out of the game for a bit. It is a 3-part program. TT1 is for the player who has never played before. TT2 is the second phase of the program and is geared for the player who has advanced from TT1 or has played some tennis before and is not a beginner. TT3 is the final piece of the puzzle and that is the playing part. Each TT1, TT2, and TT3 program is 4 weeks long for a total of a 12-week program.

Red Ball, Orange Ball, Green Ball: All juniors who are looking to get started will fall into one of these color categories. The ROG (Red-Orange-Green) program here at Camelback is specific not only to the ball that is used but also the court size and racket size. By playing with the correct-size racket, ball, and court, all players have the chance to succeed and start playing this great sport. Play begins for kids as young as 3.5 years of age. Athletic skills, hand eye coordination, and hitting skills are key components.

FALL TENNIS SESSION BEGINS IN SEPTEMBER!

Recreational Junior Tennis:

Has your son or daughter stopped playing soccer, baseball or any other sport and wanted to start tennis? Consider the Staff and Challenger groups. 20 | BET TERLIFE summer 2015

Getting to be Assistant General Manager of one of the Village health clubs is a tall order. Six-foot-six Anthony Petterson did it in five months. “It’s been a whirlwind,” says Anthony Petterson of his first year at Gainey Village, the anniversary of which he celebrated on May 14.

Membership Director at the DC Ranch Village, told Anthony about the club, and he jumped at the chance to join the membership sales team at Gainey.

“I really love the people here and couldn’t imagine being anywhere else. It really fits my personality.”

Now that he’s settled into his position as the Gainey Assistant General Manager, Anthony is training for triathlons and makes interacting with members a priority. “It’s part of my job to be out in the club meeting people and for the members to know who I am,” he says, adding that “at six-foot-six, I’m hard to miss.”

Anthony was welcomed into the Village family after serving as Fitness Director at the Jewish Community Center in Scottsdale. “I was with the JCC organization for 10 long years, and I knew I needed to take my career in a different direction,” he recalls. Lisa Owens, the

the village: Were you always in the fitness industry? anthony petterson: I actually got my bachelor’s degree in psychology. I worked for a while in a psychiatric unit at a hospital in Albuquerque, where I’m from. I’ve always been dealing with people! Have you always been athletic? Yeah, I played basketball in high school and college. When did you get into triathlons? Back in 2008, when the Olympics were in China, I was watching the women’s event and wondered, “Can I do that?” I tuned in to see what the male competitors looked like, and I figured I’d give it a try. Back then I was playing basketball; I weighed 225 pounds and I didn’t like how my body felt. Starting out, I was struggling just to run a mile, but a few months later I had dropped 25 pounds and was feeling great. Have you been into triathlons ever since? In 2012 I had reconstructive ankle surgery. After a long recovery, my ankle is strong and now I can train the way I need to in order to compete. When I started working at the Village I got the bug again. The triathlon community is so great here and I have a beautiful facility where I can train right at my fingertips. Are you training for anything specific? My training partner, Gainey Member Ben Garland, and I both have our sights set on IRONMAN Arizona in November. Our first race this year was the Tempe International Triathlon on Sunday, May 17. Update: Vowing to shave a half an hour off his previous two times on this particular course over the years, Anthony clocked in this year’s race with a 2:58 finishing time. His new personal best proves that training the right way can really pay off. The training must be pretty intense. Life is a little crazy right now, as you can imagine. I’m in the weight room three times a week and I carry my training gear with me wherever I go. I also invested in my first triathlon bike. It’s a whole different level of fast. What sort of work do you do in the weight room? Lots of functional training and core work, which is so important for endurance athletes. I do a lot of TRX and body weight exercises. I try to change up my strength training often to avoid creating muscular imbalance. This sounds like a huge commitment… I’m dedicating my whole year of training for just one day of racing. I’ve got a great support system—my fiancée is an amazing nurse and a marathon runner— and I never had a huge social life so I don’t feel like I’m giving up too much. It isn’t much of a sacrifice if it’s your passion. Have your eating habits changed since you decided to train for the IRONMAN? My biggest challenge is diet—I can’t eat enough food right now! I’m 180 pounds, which is a good weight for me, but it’s really hard to maintain with all the training I’m doing. I’m trying to figure out the ideal formula for what my body needs and uses during long hours of training and racing.

2015 Tempe International Triathlon

Do you have a specific goal in mind for the IRONMAN? My goal has been changing throughout the course of my training. I’d be ecstatic to do the event in 12 hours, but crossing that finish line is the ultimate goal. What part of a triathlon is the most difficult for you? Swimming has always been my weakest leg. It’s taken me quite a while to get comfortable in the water. I’ve basically had to teach myself how to swim.

You must be more of a visual learner… I guess so. Basketball really helped me learn this way, because it taught me bilateral coordination and gave me a great foundation of athleticism. Any training advice for people who might not be able to visualize like you do? Everyone has their own way of learning. Once you find what works for you, practice till you’re blue in the face and challenge yourself often.

summer 2015 BET TERLIFE | 21

How did you do that? I’m really good at seeing an athletic movement and mimicking it. I study countless hours of elite athletes and their swim technique, and then practice over and over till it feels right and fluid. Every time I get in the pool I’m trying to get better.

There is scientific evidence to prove that changing your workout regimen regularly helps you achieve the same type of benefits as cross training. It is well documented that cross training offers numerous benefits, including reduced risk of injury, enhanced weight loss, improved total fitness, and enhanced exercise adherence (sticking with it). You might ask “How does this impact me?” If you visit the club at the same time daily you will find a variety of classes that allow you to mix up your workout, i.e., train smarter, not harder, for maximum results. A good example of this would be a member that attends the club at 5:30 am for a workout before he/she starts the day. The member always has the option to attend a cycle class at that time. Alternatively, for maximum benefit, it is recommended that the member mix up his/her workout during the week with one of the following.

Buti Yoga is a class format that fuses power yoga, tribal dance and plyometrics into a high-intensity workout that transforms the body from the inside out. We train the core usin g the Spiral Structure technique created by Founde r Bizzie Gold that transforms the way the bod y look s and per forms almost instantly. 2-DAY TRIATHLON TRAINING WITH OLYMPIAN AND PRO TRIATHLETE MATTY REED Multiple USA National Champion, Professional Triathlete Veteran, and 2008 USA Olympian Matty Reed is bringing his 20 years of professional racing experience and skills to the Ocotillo Village. He will offer multiple coaching options for athletes ranging from youth elite development to amateur elites and beginners. “I have over the years developed a strong skill set for the sport of triathlon and I am at a point in my career where I would like to share the tools and training knowledge with other athletes. I want to inspire other athletes to get into the sport and for those athletes already in involved, help them improve their strength and speed,” Reed said. “I want to work with athletes and help them fall in love with the sport and most of all help them accomplish their goals.” Reed has a strong history in ITU draft racing and currently works one-on-one with a few youth athletes looking to follow the ITU path. He is excited about coaching age-group beginners looking to develop a triathlon-training base for racing. Reed will personally be on hand to coach each athlete, catering to each individual’s training questions. “One thing I have learned over the years is that having a family and doing this sport is feasible. Time management is important and I want to help the amateur and beginner athletes achieve a balanced training, along with a full time job and family life. It is important to me that my athletes do not get a pigeonhole mentality. Life balance is very important for longevity in the sport of triathlon,” Reed added.

“It is important to me as a coach to understand each individual, how they approach a race, see them race, and work with them to maximize their training going into a race. Lead-up training to a race can actually ruin a race so being with the athletes while they race and while I train can teach valuable lessons.”

STORY

THE LOCALLY-OWNED AND OPERATED VILLAGE CLUBS STARTED IN PHOENIX OVER 30 YEARS AGO Founded in 1990 and now home to four standalone multi-milliondollar fitness facilities, including the all-new Ocotillo Village that opened this April in Chandler, Village Health Clubs & Spas® is among the Valley’s most successful private health club companies.

24 | BET TERLIFE summer 2015

However, its roots here in the Valley actually trace all the way back to 1976, when Arizonabased businessman and philanthropist Bennett Dorrance opened the Metro Sport & Health Club in northwest Phoenix. A longtime fitness buff, Dorrance always had a passion for creating welcoming yet state-of-the-art facilities where people could stay fit and active while socializing with friends and family, says Village President Carol Nalevanko. And she should know, considering that she’s been with the company since 1980, when she was hired to serve as the activities director for the Metro Sport & Health Club. However, the Village didn’t really start to take shape until 1990, when Dorrance, along with his partners at the real estate development firm, DMB Associates, Inc., purchased a struggling racquet club located at the base of Camelback Mountain. Originally named The Village Tennis Club, the revitalized property was rebranded as the Camelback Village Racquet & Health Club through the company’s new DMB Sports Clubs division. DMB Sports Clubs continued to grow with the 1996 purchase of the Arizona Athletic Club in Tempe, and the 1999 construction of the all-new Gainey Village Health Club & Spa in Scottsdale.

Gainey Village set the standard for future growth.

It was this all-new facility in Scottsdale that set the tone for future Village Clubs in North Scottsdale and now Chandler, Nalevanko says. “This was the first time we had built a Village from the ground up, so it really became our model moving forward. From the 82,000-sq.-ft footprint, to the swimming pools and the on-site, full-service day spa, salon, and med spa, the Gainey Village set the standard for future growth.” Inspired by the success of the new-look Village Health Clubs & Spas, in 2002 – 03 the company sold Metro Sports & Health and the Arizona Athletic Club to focus on expanding its signature brand. In 2004 it opened the smaller Verrado Village inside the new master-planned community being built by its parent real estate company, with plans to expand it into a full-sized Village Club at a later date. And in 2005, the Village opened the stunning DC Ranch Village Health

Club & Spa, tucked into the mountain foothills of North Scottsdale. Meanwhile, in 2007, the Camelback Village received a multi-million-dollar renovation and expansion, including the Garcia’s Restaurant land purchase and the expanded day spa and salon.

traditional yoga studios, and Pilates, indoor cycling, and group fitness studios. Most important, says Carol Nalevanko, “The Village is more about the people than about the facility. Yes, we have beautiful clubs with state-of-the art equipment and facilities, but we are different than the standard health club because we put a high focus on the social element. Here at the Village, you’re not just a member, you’re family.”

We are different than the standard health club because we put a high focus on the social element. Here at the Village, you’re not just a member, you’re family.

Unfortunately, in 2008 the economic downturn put plans for an expansion to Chandler on hold. But recently, the Village Health Clubs and Spas has started to flex its muscles again, including constructing an all-new $3M, 10-court tennis club in 2013 at the DC Ranch Village. Plus, in April 2014, the Village broke ground on its first-ever East Valley location, the $25M Ocotillo Village Health Club & Spa. Opening exactly one year later in April 2015, the Ocotillo Village offers new and improved versions of all the signature amenities the clubs have become famous for, including 2 pools and a children’s splash garden, 7 tennis courts, a full-service spa, salon, and med spa, café and outdoor patio, kids club, nursery, gym, men’s, women’s, and family locker rooms, an indoor basketball court and running track, two racquetball and two squash courts, cardio, weight and functional training rooms, hot yoga and

NEVER A DULL

MOMENT ONE VILLAGE ISN’T ENOUGH FOR THIS BUSY ANESTHESIOLOGIST.

Fresh from the successful completion of her anesthesiology board certification exams, Village Choice member Claire Kaura is using her newfound free time to discover everything life has to offer. “I get bored really easily,” admits Claire Kaura. That’s why the Village Choice membership was the perfect match for her inquisitive, active lifestyle. “I work out mostly at Gainey,” she says, “but I play tennis at Camelback, I’ve met up with friends at DC Ranch, and sometimes I go to the new Ocotillo Club in Chandler for a change of scenery.”

26 | BET TERLIFE summer 2015

In just a few short months as a Village member, Claire has found that all four Village locations provide a welcome outlet for exercising and socializing—both of which were lacking in Claire’s life due to the rigors of med school and studying for her board certification exams. “Now that I have more time to do what I choose to do,” she reflects, “I’m choosing to do a lot!” We caught up with Claire before she was scheduled to take a 6:00 p.m. spin class at Gainey. We talked about her new life as an explorer and how she’s taking advantage of it. the village: What attracted you to the Village? claire kaura: I was going to a Pilates studio for a year, but I needed a change in my workouts. I came to the Village for the large breadth of classes they offer and the social activities that are available to members.

What kind of things are you doing at the Village? Pretty much everything! I do a lot of the group classes, especially Cycle and Yoga. Heated Flow Yoga is amazing. I also like Kathy’s Cardio Muscle Conditioning class and Upper Body Blast and Rear Attitude with Jes. Both of those classes are really fun. The other day I even tried a water aerobics class! In March I joined a tennis league at the Camelback club, and I’m thinking of joining a summer golf league. That’s a lot! How often do you go to the Village? Hahahahaha. I want to be as productive as possible with my time and I like to keep moving. Seriously, the Village has become kind of a second home to me. I try to get there at least four days a week. Do you take advantage of any of the social events at the Clubs? Most definitely. I’ve been on a group hike, attended a few happy hours and most recently went to the Casino Night at Camelback, where I played blackjack, had a great meal and danced a lot! The social events are a great way to meet other members and make new friends! Do you have a favorite Village? They’re all beautiful facilities, but Gainey is probably my favorite because it really has a close, intimate feel. There’s a warmth there

at Gainey I really appreciate. Plus I love the people who work there and I enjoy just hanging out with members after class. Have you always lived a healthy lifestyle? I grew up in Southern California, so being active has always been in my DNA. However, going through medical school and anesthesiology residency was pretty intense and I didn’t have a lot of free time. Even after residency I had to study for my written and oral board exams, which I finally just completed this past October. Becoming board-certified was a culmination of twelve years of hard work! So for a long while I didn’t have the time to live a healthy, active lifestyle and now that I have the time I choose to do it. Have your eating habits changed? I don’t deprive myself, but when you’re exercising and feeling good you’re a lot less likely to make unhealthy choices and eat greasy pizza all the time. I try to keep things in balance. It sounds like you’re a real explorer. What else have you been up to now that you have extra time? Well, I had a big adventure in March when I went with a group of other doctors to Haiti for week-long medical mission. A friend of mine from med school found an opportunity through a Christian health services organization. He asked me to go along because the group really needed two anesthesiologists. Were you nervous about going to Haiti? I was nervous, but a medical mission trip is something I’ve always wanted to do. It was my friend’s third trip, so that was reassuring and made it easier. I couldn’t be more grateful for had the opportunity. What did you do while you were there? We stayed in Dessalines, which is a commune 80 miles north of the capital, Port-au-Prince. There hadn’t been a medical team at the hospital for two years. In the week we were there we did about 30 surgical cases in the operating room, mostly basic stuff like hernia, breast mass removals, and urology cases.

That must have been difficult… It was, but even with so few resources and a pretty big language barrier, we were able to accomplish quite a bit. Plus we brought a lot of supplies with us, like syringes and antibiotics, which they’ll be able to use for a long time. Was it all work and no play? We didn’t have a ton of free time, but we did attend a church service on Sunday, we visited an orphanage, and hiked to one of the old forts that were built when Haiti fought for its independence against the French. We saw some old cannons that were used during the war. It was pretty exciting to experience a part of history, and to learn that the town we were staying in was named after Jean-Jacques Dessalines, the first governorgeneral when Haiti became a free country in 1804. How did you get along with your group? Really well. It was a great bonding experience for all 11 of us. We stayed in a compound a few blocks away from the hospital. All our meals were prepared, and we looked forward to a big dinner every night, followed by singing, guitar playing, and storytelling. We had electricity because we had the luxury of a generator, but there was no TV or anything so we really got to focus on the simple things and get close to each other. It was kind of like camp. Each room had four bunk beds! I met some really interesting people from Chicago, Texas, and Seattle. Would you go back to Haiti? I definitely would like to go back. It becomes a part of you—the hospital, the people, the city. It’s such a gratifying, feel-good-foryour-soul experience! The hospital we were working at is under renovation, and in the next six months it’ll have brand-new operating rooms that we weren’t able to use this last time I went. I’m definitely excited to see how things turn out.

MORE SPRING 2015

The Grove Happy Hour It was a perfect night for the Gainey Village Happy Hour at Orange Tree Golf Club. Their newly remodeled outdoor area and fun putting contest resulted in a social night of mingling and making new friends.

PROSHOP We have members that come into our boutiques every day to see what’s new. One thing about the Village Boutiques is, once an item is gone, it might not come back. It’s almost like special editions you find at other stores. We know you don’t want to miss out on something that might not come back so we’d like to invite you to join our Village Boutique email list. By doing so you will be the first to receive the inside scoop on • New Arrivals • Exclusive Offers • Special Events • Trunk Shows • POP-UP shops All you need to do is leave your email address on the GET ON The List that you’ll find at all the front desks at all our Village Clubs. If you’re not going to be at a club for a while, that’s ok. Simply call the front desk at your club and ask the receptionist to add your email to our list. It’s that easy. We can’t wait to start sharing pictures and information on the newest styles as they arrive in the Village Boutiques.

It’s 5 O’Clock Somewhere Members enjoyed a night of fun poolside at Gainey Village with good friends, complimentary food and drinks, and live music.

AT DC RANCH VILLAGE Summertime at the Village Clubs is about the pools, the fun, and the stay-cations! The pool area at the DC Ranch Village is a great place to spend time with family and friends. There’s something for everyone, between the six-lane lap pool, kid’s splash garden, and family recreational pool. At the beginning of 2015 we completely re-plastered the pools and repainted the decks. The kid’s splash garden has been updated with new water features, which are tons of fun according to the kids who have been taking advantage of this new area.

With such nice pools come other fun activities, like swim lessons, Swim Neptune (the Jr. Swim Team), and the Masters Swim program. Our swim instructors and coaches are here almost every day sharing their knowledge and encouraging all swimmers to meet and exceed their goals. Stop by and check it out! Even though this has been another hot and sunny summer in Arizona, that doesn’t mean we have all been staying inside! You’ll find us outside early mornings playing tennis at the DC Ranch Village Tennis Center, hiking on the great local and outof-town trails, mountain biking in the McDowell Mountains right outside our door, and open-water swimming at Bartlett Lake’s Rattlesnake Cove.

If you’re looking to get out of town to escape the hot weather, so are we. Every year we take Village members hiking in cooler areas like Flagstaff, the Grand Canyon, Zion, and other locations! Have you ever hiked Mt. Humphreys in Flagstaff? At 12,600 feet, it’s the highest peak in Arizona. And that’s the key—there are so many options, you just have to decide what you want to today. Swimming, biking, fencing, squash, racquetball, basketball, tennis, and group fitness classes, to mention a few. Tom Clark DC Ranch Village Programs Director tclark@dmbclubs.com

SHARING is a good thing

When you see a thrilling movie, enjoy a book, try a delicious restaurant, or take a great fitness class what do you want to do? The answer, of course, is share the experience with someone. I have the pleasure of seeing members every day sharing their favorite part of The Village with their friends and family. After being a Village employee for several years I kept reminding my mom how much she would love The Village. She is an active woman who enjoys boot camp, challenging personal training, and yoga. She was utilizing several memberships elsewhere around the Valley to meet her diverse needs. I encouraged her to try The Village for a week. Within the first few days she realized what I had been saying was true! The Village had everything she wanted and more with the convenience of being under one roof. She has been enjoying her membership now for a couple of years. After taking yoga class together recently she turned to me and said, “Why did I wait so long to become a member?” I smiled and thought how glad I was to share The Village with one of my most favorite people.

Kimber Hamilton Gainey Village Membership Director

As a member you are able to bring in the same guest twice in one month with a guest pass. If you have a guest pass from your membership representative, their visit is complimentary. You can always call ahead and ask your membership representative if a guest pass is available. If you don’t have a guest pass the guest fee for adults is $20/day. Children under the age of 13 are $7/day and need to be accompanied by an adult. Your guest will need to present a valid ID to the front desk and sign a waiver of liability.

Be on the lookout in July at your home club. We will be inviting you to participate in Friendly Fridays. Every Friday in July you may bring one complimentary guest. Please make sure before you arrive that your guest has a valid ID and be ready to sign the waiver. It’s that simple! I hope you have discovered that The Village is definitely not a gym, but a vibrant lifestyle. Please take advantage of multiple fitness options, award-winning spas to rest and rejuvenate with the best in the Valley, valuable networking opportunities, and the best parties in town! Why not share this amazing experience with a friend? I look forward to seeing you around the club and meeting your friends and family. Life is better at The Village!

I often get asked, what if I bring my friend and they want to become a member? My response is, if they have never been a member before you will receive a complimentary month of dues and the opportunity to enjoy The Village together. Your friend must mention that you referred them. It’s a win-win! Your friend joins and you get a free month of dues and the opportunity to enjoy The Village together. Further, we occasionally offer special contests for referring new members. In the past we have given away fitness monitors, 60” televisions and rounds of golf. We are planning to offer Apple Watches later this summer, so watch for upcoming details.
