A STAFF THAT REALLY CARES Whether I’m walking around the club handing out towels or straightening up the men’s locker room, I often have members approach me and say, “your staff really cares.”

Don’t forget to ‘like’ Village Health Clubs & Spas on Facebook, where you’ll be privy to contests we are currently running, fitness information and Village events—everything Village!

We do, and so do our owners. I have managed multiple health clubs and the Village undeniably stands out. Not only do the owners regularly work out in the clubs, they encourage us to reinvest over a million dollars each year so that the clubs are safe, well-maintained, and able to provide our members with a first-class facility. We, as Village employees, want every member to use the club daily and make it their second home. The Village is about improving your health as well as making life-long relationships. That is why we offer hikes, happy hours, wine tastings, workshops, trips, seminars, cooking classes, and other social events. The challenge is that we are all creatures of habit. We tend to use only one or two areas of the club. To get the most value out of your membership, we invite you to explore new areas that you haven’t tried before. The options are endless! You might decide to take a swim in our temperature controlled pools, participate in one of over 160 fitness classes, or schedule time with a Personal Trainer or Pilates Trainer. You might try using one of our many pieces of cardio and strength equipment, some of which are exclusive to the Village, like the Technogym Kinesis Wall. Have you always wanted to try racquet sports? Try your hand at tennis, squash, or racquetball and then relax in our Jacuzzi, steam room, or sauna.

We at the Village want you, your family, and your friends here at the club often, not only for the great physical benefits it offers, but for the wonderful social aspects Village members experience. NWLB ladies supporting and racing in the 10th Annual Tri for the Cure AZ.

Spring Updates

Our Village Triathletes have been busy all spring, training and racing. Our Village partners TriScottsdale and NWLB (No Woman Left Behind) along with many Village employees and members, put on the 10th Annual Tri for the Cure March 26th at the Phoenix Swim Club in Paradise Valley. This all women’s tri, du, and 5k is a great beginner’s race and helps raise money for a great cause (www.triforthecureaz.com). We had many members racing California 70.3, New Orleans 70.3, Rocky Point Triathlon, and St. George 70.3 in May, who braved COLD, windy, rainy conditions to complete the half ironman triathlon. A couple of first-time Ironman athletes, Rebecca Green and Lindsay Fleet, completed Ironman Texas on May 14th. In April, the Gainey Village hosted a kids, triathlon clinc and race; we had a great group of kids who completed the 25 – 100yd swim, 2+mile bike, and 1 mile run. Look for a fall clinic and race at the Gainey and DC Ranch Villages.

For information on individual training plans, beginner small group triathlon training, group workouts, open water swims, and anything triathlon, contact Triathlon Coordinator Abby Luedecke at 480.612.5232. See page 14 for details regarding the Ocotillo Indoor Triathlon.

As we head into the summer, the Village will host open water swim practices at Bartlett and Canyon Lakes; at our entire group outdoor workout schedule can be found on flyers at each club (soon to be on the Village Clubs website) and by joining our Triathlon Coordinator’s email list. Our group rides and runs are the perfect way to get motivated and stay healthy all summer long. Each Village has a great Master Swim schedule as well.

EVERY DAY HIKE

Picacho Peak

Many people have noticed the large and mysterious peak that you see on your right as you drive to Tucson. The peak is called Picacho Peak and the members hiked it on April 9. They loved this unique trail that has cables and handrails to assist you to the top. The elevation gain of 1,374 feet made for a challenging and rewarding hike!

Village members showed their generous side by doing the Hike for the Cure on April 28. This annual hike, which raises money for TGen, was on the Sunrise Trail in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, off of 145th Street & Via Linda. Thank you for donating to a great cause!

PLAYING

DOWN

EXPLODING THE #1 MYTH OF CLUB TENNIS

A myth is something that just ain’t true but has been rolled off so many tongues for so many years that everyone is just sure it’s a fact. Myth #1 in tennis, particularly recreational/club tennis, is that “playing down” will ruin your game. The larger fear, of course, is that playing down will ruin your reputation, but that’s a different chapter in the book. It says right here, playing down can be good for your game! In my previous life as a competitive adult player in the Missouri Valley section I regularly played three or four practice matches/week in preparation for tournaments. One of these players was decidedly weaker than I. I made sure I played him once a week, and I always beat him like a drum. Let’s look at the benefits.

In a slump? Play down! Working on that new spin serve? Play down! You and your partner toying with a radical shift to Australian when she serves, but hate to risk a WITL win? Play down! When’s the last time you walked off the court after a serious practice match, singles or doubles, and all the players were truly pumped? When’s the last time you played down? Grab your telephone. It’s a rush. Jim Burns, Camelback Village Tennis Professional

summer 2016 BET TERLIFE | 5

Remember the old malapropism, “90% of tennis is 50% mental.” It is important for any competitive player to develop confidence: in strokes, in strategy, and in the ability to win key points and close out matches. If you are always “playing up” and losing, or if you are always dealing with the pressure of competing against someone right at your level and matches are always close, you may never try new stuff, you may never feel comfortable “going for it,” and you may never learn how to relax and “construct a point” in competitive situations.

At least once a day on the teaching court I hear someone say, “Sure, this is a cool new stroke you’re having me learn, but I’m never going to try it in a match.” Of course not. Most players are so afraid of losing, they won’t dare try a new shot. PLAY DOWN! Call someone you know you can beat easily. Call someone you always have beaten easily. They will love you for it. It will do wonders for their game and their reputation. It will do wonders for your game and your confidence.

CYCLE FOR THE CURE 2016 Cycle for the Cure raises $175,000 at Village Health Clubs to support cancer research at TGen Village Health Clubs provided the venues. Spinners flexed their muscles. And supporters of the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) brought their dollars—170,000 of them … and still counting. The 6th annual Cycle for the Cure—one of the most exciting ways to support cancer research at TGen—saw hundreds of indoor cyclists pump for two hours on May 1 at Village Health Clubs in Phoenix, Chandler, and Scottsdale.

6 | BET TERLIFE summer 2016

Member Stacey Rosewell and relatives

“Thanks to our friends at the Village Health Clubs, and event co-chairs Vicki Vaughn and Robyn DeBell, we had a spectacular turnout, raising additional funds critical to accelerating TGen’s cancer research,” said TGen Foundation President Michael Bassoff. “Cycle for the Cure helps us provide hope and answers today for cancer patients and their families.” And it’s not over. You can still donate at www.tgenfoundation.org/cycle. Watch for next year’s 7th annual Cycle for the Cure.

ABOUT

TGEN

Using genomic sequencing, TGen helps doctors match the appropriate therapy to each patient’s DNA profile, producing the greatest patient benefit. This year, Cycle for the Cure raised research funds for work on a revolutionary diagnostic method called “liquid biopsies” —biomarkers in circulating blood—as a means of providing patients and their doctors with early detection of disease.

ZONE

MY

@ THE VILLAGE

8 | BET TERLIFE summer 2016

Kimber Hamilton, Gainey Village Membership Director

Have you noticed the new television screens around the club in our group fitness studios or cardio areas? Welcome to the next level of fitness awareness and intuitive technology! What is MYZONE? MYZONE is a unique activity heartrate monitoring system that accurately off ers real-time feedback on your specific heart rate, eff ort, and calories during your workouts. The band has been designed with a built-in memory. If you choose to wear the MYZONE belt in one of the MYZONE designated classes your information will be streamed in real time to the display. A color-coded tile will show you how much eff ort you are exerting at that particular moment. I am able to pair MYZONE with the free app on my phone. I can stream my activity, upload my data, and review results from my phone. The app is very comprehensive and allows me to track my activity on a calendar. It also converts my eff ort into an easy to read workout bar graph. Another component I love about using the MYZONE is that I can challenge my friends and cheer them on when they share their workouts. MYZONE is also designed to intuitively adapt to your specific fitness level. As we know, not everyone doing the same exercise will experience the exact same level of exertion. As an indoor cycle instructor I love that I can see the ride I have designed and cue students

in class to the targeted zone! I have noticed an even greater level of camaraderie with the riders that are MYZONE - enabled, inside and outside the studio. I highly recommend the MYZONE to any fitness enthusiast. It is available for purchase at the front desk for $79.99. Normally they are priced over $200. I invite you to join your fellow healthy and fit-minded Village member—and add me to your friend list once you download the app. I think you will find you will actually be motivated to work out more consistently and consciously.

You are doing an injustice to your career by not participating in daily exercise. — Kaileigh Costello

MOST IMPORTANT part of

YOUR CAREER

We live in a time where we are constantly busy moving from task to task at work or at home. There is always something else to be done. Technology has advanced; therefore, the emails, texts, and phone calls continue to stream in even after work. We view anything outside of our careers as a luxury. This includes daily exercise. The common complaint is that people believe they do not have time to exercise. This is a valid point, because of our fast-paced lifestyle. However, do you know that you are actually doing an injustice to your career by not participating in daily exercise? When we think of exercise we think about looking good in a swimsuit, losing weight, or becoming healthier overall. However, those are not the only benefits. Daily exercise leads to:

Lower Levels of Cortisol

Cortisol is the stress hormone. Who wouldn’t want less stress?

Improved Concentration

Each day brings high demands and, just like pushing through a tough exercise, you must be able to stay focused for a long period of time. Finishing a difficult exercise leaves you with the feeling of success! It leads to increase in self-efficacy, which is important in all aspects of life. With this increased blood flow and oxygen through your body the mind becomes sharper, and with increased confidence you have the support and energy you need to take on the hard day ahead. These are just three benefits of daily exercise. You need to begin to look at exercise as the most important part of your day. Daily exercise will aid you towards employment advances and increased productivity. It also provides you with a break in your busy schedule where you can get away from the constant communication and to-do lists. When you begin to view exercise as a daily must instead of a luxury, that’s when the success will begin. Not only will you become more prosperous within your career, but you will look and feel great. It is time to make exercise your first priority! You will never leave a workout saying , “I wish I stayed home.” Make the commitment today and watch the positive changes in your physique, career, and overall health blossom.

Kaileigh Costello, Personal Trainer

Following an exercise regimen for about three months leads to the formation of new, more densely connected neurons within the brain, and lessens the effects of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Can you imagine the continued benefits of exercise beyond three months, such as a lowering the risk for Alzheimer’s disease?

Increase in Mental Stamina

PILATES BENEFITS FOR ATHLETES OF ALL LEVELS Pilates can help you become familiar with your body’s specific needs. It can also help lay a perfect foundation for everyday physical activity or help with challenges of a specific sport at any level. Here are some benefits of Pilates for athletes. Linda Bernal, Ocotillo Village Group Fitness Director

Lengthen Muscles and Increase Flexibility Pilates lengthens muscles and, in turn, provides the flexibility you need to participate in many activities. Short, bulky muscles are the types that are most prone to injury. The natural, full-body movements of Pilates will help you gain lean, long muscle mass that helps with strength and speed as well as healthy, long-term fat loss. You’ll also increase in tendon, bone and ligament strength, which are vital for all athletes. This will help if you’re shooting hoops on the weekend or training for a tennis tournament.

10 | BET TERLIFE summer 2016

Strengthen Your Core

Pilates exercises strengthen your core. From your shoulders to knees, this whole “powerhouse” is essential for balance and stability, preventing falls and injuries. A strong and flexible core is the foundation for almost everything that you do, from picking up your gym bag to maintaining good posture while sitt ing in the car. The core work in Pilates helps lessen the wear and tear on the spine through the use of your deep abdominals. Joseph Pilates was famous for saying “We are as old as our spines.” Developing a strong core will help you enjoy an athletic lifestyle for years to come.

Improve Sports Performance

Pilates improves sports performance by conditioning the whole body. Even the ankles and feet will benefit from Pilates. This is important since the ankles and the feet contribute to healthy, balanced muscles. Doing the same workout every day will cause weak muscles to become weaker, and strong muscles to become stronger. This is why many

trainers recommend you cross-train. This helps avoid muscle imbalances. A total-body Pilates workout will help improve sports performance by lengthening and strengthening muscles. These are only three of the many reasons that make Pilates a beneficial workout for any level of athlete. We encourage all Village members to take advantage of the one-time complimentary Pilates New Member Orientation (NMO) offered to all members.

Who Can Benefit

What professional dancers discovered years ago, professional athletes recently realized. Pilates is one of the best forms of conditioning a top-tier athlete can participate in. Pilates’ integration of the trunk, pelvis, and shoulder girdle, and its emphasis on proper breathing, correct spinal and pelvic alignment, and smooth, flowing movement allow athletes to access each part of the body individually, and become familiar with the functional mechanics. With Pilates training, athletes can hit the ball farther, run faster, jump higher— and they do it without pain or injury to themselves. In the same way, a Pilates regimen can help a teenage athlete by introducing them to these same basic principles of breathing, alignment, and body conditioning. A Pilates regimen can also help a new fitness club member who is just starting the journey to a healthier lifestyle. Each sport places its own distinct set of pressures and stresses on the body. These stresses usually result in a distinct set of injuries. Tennis is no exception. Tennis is a high speed, high impact, power-based game, requiring rotation and extension through the spine and putt ing particular stress on a shoulder. Unsurprisingly,

Meet the

back, hip, knee, shoulder, and calf injuries are amongst the most common. Whether you’re a social player or an aspiring professional, Pilates can not only help reduce the number of common tennis injuries you pick up, it can also improve your movement, your power, and ultimately, your game.

OCOTILLO PILATES TEAM

The Equipment

Have you walked by the Pilates Studio and said to yourself, “What are those crazy-looking contraptions?” You are not alone. Pilates equipment may look intimidating but these pieces of equipment are very beneficial if used properly. Following are the basics of Pilates Equipment:

LINDA BERNAL Pilates & Yoga Director,

Reformer: The Reformer is a spring-loaded workout system that allows you to strengthen and stretch the body, while keeping the spine supported. One of the greatest benefits of the Reformer is the feedback that you get from the equipment to better understand your body and any imbalances. All people have imbalances. Even the professional athlete has imbalances. Come join a class and challenge yourself.

PPS- CPI (I & II), NASM-CPT, ACE-CPT, AFAA-CGFI

Tower: The Tower system is attached to a reformer. It includes a combination of spring and bars that help support and guide you through various movements. Sit, stand, and even lie down to work out on this extremely versatile system that covers everything from isolated movements to more complex, full-body exercises. Chair: The Pilates chair is a powerful piece of exercise equipment. It has a remarkable ability to build core stability, upper-body strength, and lower-body power to improve performance in athletes; retrain the body after injury; and increase overall physical conditioning. The chair is a simple device, consisting of a seat, a pedal, and springs that attached to the pedal to adjust the resistance. If used to its full potential, the chair can provide a great total body workout. Mat: Pilates on the mat is great for building fundamental skills. As you move towards a more advanced level, mat work is often considered more challenging as you don’t have the equipment there for support. It’s all up to you. A mat Pilates class focuses on enhanced postural alignment, coordination, strength, and flexibility. This core-focused workout is appropriate for all and can be modified for all fitness levels. INGREDIENTS for

SUCCESS

For Ocotillo Café Manager Isaac Rios, taking control of his body is just as important as taking control of the menu.

16 | BET TERLIFE summer 2016

Isaac Rios never wanted to work at the Village. He was happy in his role as Catering Director at AJ’s Fine Foods. In fact, he felt loyal to the company that gave his career a jumpstart after he graduated from Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Scottsdale. But just to keep his brother-in-law from bugging him, Isaac agreed to attend a job fair that the Village was holding in Chandler. “It was surreal,” Isaac said of the experience. “The first person I met was Connie Raza, the Head Recruiter. We talked for a while, and before I knew it I was scheduling an interview with Carol Nalevanko and Rick Erdenberger, the President and Vice President of DMB Clubs.” At that point, Isaac knew that he was destined to change the course of his life and career by working at the Village. Despite having strep throat during his formal interview, Isaac got the job and is now combining his dual passions for food and fitness in a work environment that feels more like home. “I never leave the Village,” Isaac jokes. “But it works out because I really never want to.”

We talked with Isaac about his vision for the café, the amazing weight-loss story that brought back his zest for life, and how his growing sense of confidence is a source of inspiration for many Village members. the village: You started working at the Club in

February 2015, before Ocotillo even opened its doors. How much time did you have to get things up and running? isaac rios: I had about two months to figure everything out. At first it felt like a lot to take on, but it was exciting. When I started, the club was under construction. All I knew was the layout of the space, and it was up to me to create the menu, pick the straws, the silverware, the plates, all the details. Once I sat down and focused, it all started coming together. Did you have any help? The Café Managers at the other clubs were a great resource, especially Chanel at DC Ranch. She spent a lot of time coaching me. I spent a few days working at Camelback, and on my own time I did a little secret shopping. I’d go to all the club cafés and order food. I wanted to see what everyone was doing.

How have you made the Lakeview Café at Ocotillo your own? Rick and Carol wanted me to try something new, but I also wanted to keep the concept unified with what was going on at the other locations. I took a lot of my inspiration from formats like Chop Shop and Flower Child, which use homemade, whole foods as the foundation for each dining experience. I soon realized that having everything organic was expensive, so I worked with Bree West and a few other nutritionists to narrow things down to the organic essentials. What are the organic essentials? From what I could understand in working with Bree West, a trainer from DC Ranch, you should eat organic protein, for example, because it’s harder for your body to fi lter out the toxins and additives in non-organic meats. Your body is better at dealing with conventionally grown leafy green vegetables. When did you realize you wanted to be a chef? Very early on in life. At age 15 I got my first job at a fast-food place, and when I graduated from high school I started working at a real restaurant. I entered culinary school at age 19. What did you do after that? I got a little discouraged to find that you don’t get hired as a chef right away. The reality is that you get hired as a dishwasher or a prep cook for nine or ten bucks an hour. When I was working as a cook in a hospital, life took over and I got married and had a baby girl. My career really started to stagnate. How did you turn things around? One of the biggest changes I made was in my fitness level. At the time I weighed 300 pounds. I had hypertension and high cholesterol, and I could lose my breath just trying to complete a sentence. So I got on a diet, joined a gym, and hired a trainer. I lost 100 pounds in eight months, and I got passionate about my career again. So that focus on fitness ignited your fire for working again? Definitely. I went back to AJ ’s and they hired me as a chef. I was promoted to Assistant Manager in a year and a half, and six months later they made me Catering Director. For the first time in my life, I was genuinely happy with my career, with my body, and with life in general. Things couldn’t have been better. What made you look at the Village? My brother-in-law is the Operations Director at Gainey. He encouraged me to check out a job fair the Village was hosting, but I thought he was crazy. What was I going to do at a gym? But I went, and as soon as I walked in I knew it was going to be a life-changing experience. Connie Raza, the Head Recruiter, brings me to the front of a long line to talk to Carol, the Club President, and before I knew it I had set up an interview for the following week. It all happened so fast, and that night I kind of knew it was my destiny. So you kind of knew you had the job before the interview? Well, after the interview I wasn’t as confident. I had strep throat. I had just gotten antibiotics, but I had a 102-degree fever and my nose was running all over the place. I looked like crap. Carol got up and brought me a box of Kleenex, which was so sweet of her. A week later, Connie called to let me know I got the job. I said, “Are you serious?!” Did you start right away? I gave AJ’s another month because I owed them that, but I was really excited to be in charge of a new restaurant. I’m amazed that you can be around food all the time and not be tempted to gain the weight back. Planning your meals is really important. I know in advance what I can eat and how much of it I can have. Plus, now I can train at work.

Do a lot of the members know your story? Yeah, they do. My before-and-after pictures are on the TV screens throughout the club all the time. Some people will stop me and tell me how impressed they are with what I did, while others look to me for help and inspiration. One guy, who’s already lost 160 pounds and is still transforming, told me, “When I read your story, that’s me. I see the way you look and the way you are, and I want to be like you.” The fact that he’s done so much on his own and looks to me for inspiration is incredibly humbling. Anyone who’s changed their life so drastically—let’s just say we understand each other.

summer 2016 BET TERLIFE | 17

What’s your exercise routine like? I have a trainer at the club and he’s got me focused on being strong. We do a lot of quick-burst activities, like sprints. There was a time when I wanted to have abs, but now I just want to be able to play with my baby girl. Being able to fit into size 34 pants instead of 42 works for me, too. If you met me five years ago, you wouldn’t recognize me today. I look completely different and I also feel extremely confident and empowered.

MOVEMENTS

HEALTH

A BRAIN-BASED APPROACH

At the Village I teach a class called Health Movements, in which I use applied neuroanatomy to fine-tune the brain, helping others train efficient and eff ective movement. The target is how well can we get our brain to function in taking in

sensory information, integrating it, and producing expressive movement. After an injury or non disuse of an area of the body, the brain needs to re-map the area, through joint mobility and specific muscle contraction, to turn it back on. Once the brain feels safe, reestablishing awareness of the dysfunctional pattern will lead to better control and relief of pain. The neural plasticity of the brain gives us the ability to regain control of our bodies and rewire the nervous system. On the performance side of movement, it works the same way—fine-tuning the nervous system with high-quality primitive movements allows athletes to develop flawless technique in more compound motions. A triathlete needs every bit of efficient motion out of every joint and muscle to complete the race in the best possible time. Even for the vast majority of exercisers who just want to improve their bodies will learn how to turn on their muscles so they can get more eff ective results out of their training. If you want a nice butt or good abs, refining your brain’s map of how to fire those muscles will accelerate your progress. The class is suitable for all levels and goals, because it starts with the true fundamentals of all highquality movement. Come check it out Tuesdays at 11 am and Thursdays at 7:15 am at DC Ranch Village. Personal training is also an option—and yes, there is a specific movement to make you better.

summer 2016 BET TERLIFE | 19

Being the youngest of three boys in a competitive sports family I was always looking for a way to get ahead of my bigger, faster, stronger older brothers. I depended on my brain to out-maneuver my way to success. This pushed me to find ways to get better through flawless technique and the pursuit of skill. In college, through the study of kinesiology— human movement—I learned the importance of the brain and nervous system as the key to highlevel skill. Most improvements in strength, speed, and athleticism come from the fine-tuning of the nervous system through the signaling from the brain down to the muscles. Some neuroscientists have debated that we have a brain for one reason and one reason only, and that’s to produce adaptable and complex movements. Movement is the only way we have of aff ecting the world around us. My passion and focus became centered around movement that can help others be the best they can be. I believe there is a specific movement that everyone’s brain needs for them to achieve their personal—goal from losing weight to building their muscles or relieving pain. Through this passion to help others and compete with my brothers I created a system called Health Movements, to share the gift of movement.

SWIMMING BENEFITS

20 | BET TERLIFE summer 2016

Swimming has been called the perfect exercise. After all, you can get all of the benefits of an aerobic workout without any damaging impact on joints, and it can be done by both the very old and the very young. Swimming at an early age promotes physical, mental, and emotional development. It helps to prepare a child for school by facilitating learning and accelerates mental development and high IQs. When young children are engaged in swim lessons, efficient neuropathways are developed. Swimming is bilateral cross-pattern training, which improves muscle development and coordination. Whether you begin to swim at an early age or start later in life there are physical and mental benefits; swimming is a good all-around activity!

Here are just a few reasons why: • Holds its own for calories burned • Helps you stay flexible • Keeps your heart rate up but takes some of the impact stress off your body • Builds endurance, muscle strength, and cardiovascular fitness • Helps maintain a healthy weight, healthy heart, and healthy lungs • Tones muscles and builds strength • Provides an all-over body workout, as nearly all of your muscles are used during swimming • During the hot months in Arizona it is a pleasant way to cool down on a hot day One of the Village swim coaches, Alison Lenz, says “Knowing how to swim is a gift for life.”

4 CARE TIPS

EASY SUMMER SKIN

1

2

VITAMIN C

3

• Use a product that includes Vitamin C to help prevent and repair sun damage. The Village Spas carry the Eminence Rosehip Triple C & E Serum. • Not only does the Vitamin C help protect and repair the skin, the Vitamin E nourishes and soothes it. Additional ingredients increase collagen, brighten skin, and improve moisture.

SPF • Sun Protection needs to be reapplied every two hours if actively in direct sunlight. Coola Skincare features organic sun care products free of the harmful ingredients found in many sunscreens.

4

22 | BET TERLIFE summer 2016

• For a completely different approach Eminence Organic Mineral Defense is a brush and powder. It is easily applied while on the go, great for men, women, and kids, on whom it is so easily applied. The minerals act as little mirrors to not only protect against but DEFLECT the sun. Just by adding a refreshing toner on top, it becomes waterproof.

TONER • A good toner cools and hydrates the skin, helping to protect from pigment related to heat exposure. We recommend the Cooling Lime Toner from Eminence as an excellent organic option that also includes the benefit of Vitamin C.

LIP CARE • Lips can require special attention in the heat of summer. Our Lip Trio Kit features three products to exfoliate, plump, and hydrate, keeping lips fresh all summer long. Coola also features a great SPF sunblock for lips, especially effective for sports and outdoor activities. Finally, LaNatura Green Tea Lip Balm is filled with antioxidants and deeply nourishes the lips with Shea Butter. Kirk Gregor, Gainey Village Spa Director

The Village Spas take great care in recruiting only the best service providers in the industry to assure you receive exceptional spa and salon services. WHY

DAZZLE DRY?

Dazzle Dry is a line of nail polishes with brilliant colors and durability. When choosing the polishes for use at the Spa at Ocotillo Village I had no idea there would be such a great option for natural nails. Dazzle Dry was new to me and I had no experience with it. It is a vegan polish that is 5 free. Well, what exactly does that mean?

First, there are no animal products used in it. It is also devoid of the five harmful chemicals that are often used in nail polish. Dazzle Dry is the only true non-toxic polish that does not contain any of these harmful chemicals. Keep in mind that some of these chemicals, that we ladies have been putting on our nails, have been known to cause cancer, birth defects, seizures, liver damage, nervous system problems, and lymphoma. Eeek! One of the other things that was surprising to find out about Dazzle Dry is that it is quick drying. Like really, five minutes and it’s so hard you can feel confident about putting that shoe on or digging in your wallet. All this sounded a little too good to be true, until I personally put it to the test. As a spa director, there are some perks like the occasional “quality assurance” test, but when I was almost done with my “test” pedicure there arose a crisis and I had to run. I did wait the five minutes, and then on went the dress flats with no socks. I just knew that pedicure would be ruined. To my surprise when I slipped off my shoes at the end of the day my nails looked great! Ok, so Dazzle passed that test, but how would it wear on my fingernails? I can’t go more than a day without my polish chipping but I was happy to find it lasted into the twelfth day before there was any hint of a chip! Most of our guests now report that it wears like Shellac or Gel, and they get to their next manicure with no issues. The other happy coincidence reported by our guests and their technicians is that their nails look healthier and have grown stronger after the switch to Dazzle Dry. The polish is actually fortified with pro-vitamin B5 and calcium, which strengthen nails and are non-yellowing. I’m now a believer, and I’m proud to promote this local Chandler company—and healthier nails for all!

BALNEOLOGY THE BENEFITS OF TAKING A THERAPEUTIC BATH This is not a standard bubble bath. Balneology is the study or use of bathing for therapeutic purposes. The use of natural healing salts, combined with essential oil, herbs, and dried flowers make for a therapeutic bath. Pamella Kerley, Camelback Village Spa Director

All you need is 20 to 30 minutes, one to three times a week, to make a profound difference in your well-being. Ritual bathing can lower blood pressure, soothe the mind, detoxify, de-stress, and reduce fluid retention in our bodies.

Benefits of Using Salt in the Bath

24 | BET TERLIFE summer 2016

1 2 3 4 5

Bath Salt Soak

Relieves muscle aches and pains by aiding in the elimination of uric acid build-up. Raises magnesium levels. Magnesium is necessary for the body to form adequate serotonin, a chemical in the brain that elicits feelings of well-being and relaxation.

1

2 tsps of colloidal oatmeal

1 tsp of corn starch or 1 tsp of baking soda

Ziploc baggie

Place all of the ingredients in a Ziploc baggie and shake. Pour contents into a warm bath and soak for 20 minutes.

May reduce blood pressure, and improve circulation. Flushes toxins, and heavy metals from the body.

2

Peppermint Foot Scrub

It feels great!

How does it work? A salt bath work through a principle of hydrotherapy called diff usion, by which water moves across a permeable or semi-permeable membrane from a low mineral salt concentration to a high concentration to equalize the solution.

1 cup of Epsom salt

1

4oz container

Fresh rosemary (optional)

3 tsps of Epsom salt

½ a tea bag of green tea

3 drops of DoTerra Peppermint Essential Oil

3 oz of a carrier oil such as olive oil or coconut oil

Place Epsom salt, green tea, and rosemary in the container. Cover the container and shake to mix up the contents. Add the carrier oil until it almost reaches the top of the container. Add 3 drops of Peppermint Essential Oil. Wet feet, and take a small amount of scrub to use on the feet. Scrub the foot with the mixture. Rinse off under running water or use wet towels to remove.

MAN OF ACTION SERIAL ENTREPRENEUR AND GAINEY MEMBER BEN GARLAND HAS A LOT ON HIS PLATE—AND HE WOULDN’T HAVE IT ANY OTHER WAY.

A self-described “doer,” Ben Garland brings a high level of intensity to everything he does that you just don’t see very often. Whether it’s running a business, leading a nonprofit organization, or training for an IRONMAN Triathlon or ultra marathon, Ben puts it all on the table. “I’d rather fail at something difficult than do something easy,” he says. A perfect example is his determination to stick a handstand in his Hot Yoga class. “Adding a split second to my handstand is more fulfi lling than finishing an endurance race. Endurance comes easy to me, but yoga inversions are next to impossible.” We got Ben to sit still for a little bit, and he talked to us about what drives him, how he keeps the fat kid inside him at bay, and what’s next for a 28-year-old who’s already on his second successful startup.

26 | BET TERLIFE summer 2016

the village: Were you always interested in business?

ben garland: Yeah. As a kid I was always selling my neighbors something. They’d hire me to trim their hedges or recoat their roofs, and before I started each day I’d be selling them magazine subscriptions. When I got older it was more of the same, only the stakes just got higher. When did you start your first “real” business? I was a junior at U of A, studying Finance and Entrepreneurship, when I started Sunbelt Insurance Holdings. It’s a full-service property and casualty brokerage. That was back in 2009, and I sold the business in 2013. Now I oversee the company

as President, and I’m working on scaling another business called Sunbelt Medical Management. We help private medical practices manage essential business services, like billing, credentialing, and accounting. Is it hard to juggle two separate businesses? I have the most color-coordinated calendar you’ve ever seen! I like to keep things moving forward all the time, so I try to focus my energy wherever I see momentum slowing down. As small businesses, we’re very reactionary to things like emerging opportunities, market changes, and things of that nature. But I thrive on being a problem-solver and overcoming the challenges life presents each day. What’s your philosophy about success? People think it’s all about making money, but that’s just the byproduct of gett ing the right group of people together who work hard at something with a significant amount of passion. My teams focus on a lot of things that aren’t income-based, but in the end if you do the right thing for the right reason, the rest will fall into place. I spend most of my time challenging how we do things or pushing my teams to look for new ways to achieve greater results. When I’m successful at those types of things, the business improves and the financials follow suit. But that’s not really the motivation. Whether it’s my work as President of Kids, Chance, a local nonprofit, or serving on various boards in the community, my approach is the same.

Even in roles I don’t get paid for, I show up highly motivated, 100-percent focused on the job at hand and confident that we’ll succeed. After all, it’s all about att itude. I believe that confidence is silent, so I try to lead by example and always set the bar high. My motto, in business and in life, is to be “the best or nothing, in all that I do.” What made you move to Phoenix? I grew up in Tucson, but that’s a tough place for a young professional. The business opportunities were very strong in Phoenix, and the proximity to Tucson allowed me to maintain our roots in our city of origin. I’m also a very social individual, and Phoenix offered a market for professional growth and a social community I mesh well with. What do you do for fun? I love the Arcadia area, and with all the recent improvements downtown Phoenix is really gett ing great. I’m a bit of a foodie, and I like going out to places like Grassroots, Twisted Grove, the Henry, Postino, and El Chorro. On Sunday afternoons, you can usually find me at Zipps Sports Grill. I drink a ton of coffee, and one of my favorite shops is Village Coffee Roasters at Hayden and Via de Ventura. My firm and I are major supporters of Ballet Arizona, and I attend nearly every performance. I’m fascinated by the marriage of a classic art form and the incredible athleticism it takes to produce it. In the winter, I’ll find any excuse to go outside and hike or run. That’s really my escape when the stress gets high, to get off the concrete and into the woods. What brought you to the Village? I was all over the place fitness-wise. I was a member at the JCC, I had a separate gym for mixed martial arts and a trainer for weightlift ing, I went to a yoga studio, and I was a member of a local pool. When I found out about the Village, it was great to consolidate my whole life into one building. What keeps me there is the community and the incredible staff, who I couldn’t be more thankful for every time I come in for a workout.

Do you train with other people? Anthony Petterson, the Assistant General Manager at Gainey, got me to do the IRONMAN with him. He has been an incredible motivator and catalyst for my personal improvement over the past two years. I wouldn’t be where I’m at athletically or personally without his unyielding support, for which I’m

Were you always very athletic? I played a lot of sports growing up, but I was never particularly athletically gifted. Athletically challenged is probably more fitt ing. My strength was that I had intense personal drive and incredible discipline. How did you get into hot yoga? Everyone constantly talked about how challenging it was, which is what really gets me excited. I’ve been doing it for about five years, and it took me about two years to realize that the reason I keep at it is the escape. With all that’s on my mind, I’m constantly battling myself to be present in other activities, but in yoga I’m completely centered. I always leave class with a fresh mind and new levels of enthusiasm. Are you able to eat prett y cleanly to keep your energy up? It’s tough, because I have a major fat kid living inside me. I won’t buy cookies, but if you give me a box I’ll eat the whole thing. It’s a major problem! That being said, I eat a regulated diet most of the time. I typically cook all my food for the week on Sunday, a lot of chicken and broccoli. I believe that true health is achieved in the kitchen, but I’ll treat myself to some banana cream pie or something sweet on the weekends. What are your future goals? I have very specific work goals. Our vision for the insurance company, for example, is to be on the list of the Top 100 P&C producing agencies in the United States by 2020. Fitness-wise, it’s a living goal that’s constantly evolving. I want to continue pushing my limits and do new things. I’d much rather try something new than shave a few minutes off my time in a race I’ve done before. Most importantly, I want to master the art of having balance in my life. I’m very dedicated to all the things I’m doing, but there’s probably a reasonable argument to be made for spending a little more time relaxing and reflecting instead of constantly looking to see what’s on the horizon. Part of that includes taking time out to reconnect with friends and family, which was a New Year’s resolution for me this year. After all, our lives are measured by the memories we leave behind. Do you have any advice for people who want to succeed in their careers or in life? Do the best in everything you do or don’t do it at all. If you take that approach, you’ll quickly find out what you’re really good at. The other key component is consistency, which is one of the hardest things to master. I believe that if you consistently apply pressure in a focused area, you’ll achieve forward progress. Progress is a lot more important than perfection, because perfection is unsustainable.

summer 2016 BET TERLIFE | 27

How do you fit training into your busy schedule? It’s important to me because it keeps me centered, so I make the time for it. I’m usually up at 4:15 every day, and I go to the gym twice a day when I can. I try to offset my schedule from the standard hours, because I believe the least productive time on the planet is from 9 to 5. Time is definitely my most limited resource. So if I’m training for an event, I’ll hire a coach or have a training partner who can do all the planning for me. I love the actual training, though. I get excited about it, especially if I have something I’m building toward. Then I really show up with a vengeance. Having a specific target, and being accountable to someone, is really important to me and always produces a better result.

incredibly grateful. The IRONMAN was a great experience, and when I hit the starting line I realized I had been training for that event my entire life. My goal was to finish in 13 hours, and my time was 12 hours and 58 minutes. I kind of thought we were done with that kind of thing, but we’re doing another Half IRONMAN together and he’s currently talking me into doing an ultra marathon next year.

RANCH spring DC VILLAGE TENNISPROGRAMS

30 | BET TERLIFE summer 2016

The DC Ranch Village Tennis Center has many different programs, making it very easy for members to get out on the courts and involved in the tennis program. Our weekly Round Robins are aimed at all levels of players and are a great way for members to not only play social doubles but to also meet other players at their level. The round robins are scheduled during the day, in the evening, and also on Sunday mornings. There is no weekly commitment, and you simply sign up to play when it is convenient for you. For those of you who are looking to add some variety and take your cardio routines out into the fresh air, try one of our Tennis Boot Camps. No tennis experience is necessary and you get a 60-minute workout with the beautiful views at the Village Tennis Center.

Why not Try Tennis Today? If you have been meaning to give tennis a go but haven’t taken the leap yet, this is the program for you! This four-week program will give you all the basics you need to enjoy this great game for life. The friendly, experienced staff at the DC Ranch Village Tennis Center are ready to get you involved and out on the court today. Whether it be a private lesson, semi-private lesson, clinic, round robin, or social tennis, the courts are waiting for you!
