Dr. Rick Averitte and his daughter Kennedy are members of DC Ranch Village. To learn more, see page 20.

Whom am I thanking, and for what? I’m thanking all of you who are members of the Village family, and I am thanking you for what you contribute to the great culture that is the hallmark of the Village. Let me be more specific.

Thank you for your generosity. A large number of you are active in one charity or another. You commit time and energy to help others, and frequently we join you in those efforts.

Thank you for your loyalty. Many of you have been members of your particular Village since its beginning— Camelback in 1990 (the year DMB purchased the club), Gainey in 1999 and DC Ranch in 2005. Many of your children and grandchildren are members too. You’ve not only nurtured and enriched the culture, but in many cases you’ve helped develop it.

In our new hire orientation program I tell new employees that in a very real sense they are owners of the Village, and as such I expect them to embrace both the benefits and obligations of ownership. It is my belief that we all are true owners of the Village—you, the members; we, the operators; and DMB, our parent company.

Thank you for your friendship. Friends make the world enjoyable. You have made friends at the Village, you have brought your friends to the Village, and you have extended your friendship to those of us who operate the Village.

Thank you, owners of the Village, for the richness you bring to these clubs. I look forward to being part of this richness for many years to come.

Thank you for your honesty. We depend on it. Of course, we are pleased when you take the time to let us know how you liked a recent party, or how a particular Yoga instructor made your day. But we are equally dependent on your candor when we don’t make the grade. We can only grow and improve when we know where and when we have fallen short. Thank you for your humor. Laughter is often the best medicine when it comes to relieving the stress that is part of our daily lives. Honestly, the humor I share with many of you is something that I look forward to each day when I come to work. From good natured ribbing, to “tennis trash talk,” to just sharing a laugh, it enriches my life.

OPTIMISM IN

COMPETITION TENNIS TIPS FROM BRIAN CHENEY

I was reminded about an important mental aspect of competitive match play at the recent USTA National Clay Courts at the New Orleans Lawn Tennis Club. The concept is simple but complex all at the same time: look on the bright side…think optimistically. Dr. Allen Fox has a whole chapter in his book, Tennis: Winning the Mental Match, on this subject. Dr. Fox describes situations where in tennis you have reality, but how you look at it is important. For instance if you are behind in a third set 3 – 5, the reality is your opponent is one game from winning the match. One way to perceive this is “the match is almost over, I’m tired, my opponent has the upper hand and it will be so hard to break serve and then hold to even tie the score.” The other way to view this is as an optimist and say “I think something good will happen and closing out a match is often the most difficult task for a player, so I will try to keep the pressure on my opponent by digging in to fight hard for every point. I still have a chance, and besides, even if I am tired, my opponent is probably just as tired or more so.” The optimistic view is the desirable way to think on the court. That doesn’t mean you will win, but it does give you the best chance. And no, it doesn’t only apply to tennis.

So there I was in my semifinals singles match at the National Clay Courts. I had lost the first set and was down a break 3 – 4 with my opponent to serve. I had not come close to breaking his serve in his last 5 service games. On the changeover I started thinking, “I need some encouragement.” Then I remembered Dr. Fox’s chapter on optimism and realized my self-talk for the past few games was something like this: “Oh well, he’s been serving well and I’ve just not been able to do anything.” So I got up from the changeover and started telling myself, “be optimistic, be encouraging, something good can still happen.” It wasn’t magic, but I did have a better attitude and simply tried to concentrate a little harder on the return of serve and be encouraged if something good happened. So I got the first point on his serve—yes, something encouraging. And the rest of the match is history. With a little extra work I did break serve and kept thinking optimistically with the result of winning the second set and the third. Thank you Allen Fox.

Mystery OF Sodium

the

Sodium is always a hot topic. We are warned to be cautious as it can contribute to health problems such as high blood pressure and hypertension, but how much do we need? And why is having too much a bad thing?

10 | bet terlife winter 2014

Brittney Clarizio BS, RD Camelback Village butke@dmbclubs.com 602.553.4943

The USDA recommends 2,000 milligrams (mg) per day or less of this mineral to achieve a heart healthy diet. However, an average American consumes over 5,000 mg a day! Why are we over-consuming sodium? Sodium is found in many foods that are convenient, fast and easy to prepare. Many food companies use sodium to preserve foods and make them more shelf stable. Foods that last quite a while on a grocery store shelf and in your cupboard as well as foods that are pre-prepared are often going to contain a high sodium level. Some common foods that are the highest in sodium include soups, frozen meals, egg substitutes, deli meats, cheese, ketchup, chips and nuts! Look at the food label and check to see how many milligrams of sodium are in the foods you eat. Try to avoid products with more than 200 mg of sodium per serving. The food label will contain the word sodium, but what about salt? Salt is actually a compound called sodium chloride so it is about 50 percent sodium! Consider that a single teaspoon of table salt has 2,325 mg of sodium. The best way to keep your sodium levels at a heart healthy 2,000 mg per day is to: 1) use salt rarely or eliminate it altogether, and 2) cook all of your meals using unprocessed foods! Once you cut back on salt and processed foods, you may find yourself enjoying some newfound health benefits!

Too much sodium in your system causes your body to retain (hold onto) water. This puts an extra burden on your heart and blood vessels. In some people, this may lead to or raise high blood pressure. Having less sodium in your diet may help you lower or avoid high blood pressure. People with high blood pressure are more likely to develop heart disease or have a stroke. The extra water retention can also lead to bloating. Many people find they lose weight and feel lighter if they drop their sodium intake. If high blood pressure and/or excess bloating are a problem, see your doctor and also consider consulting a registered dietitian to help you decrease your sodium intake!

THE EXPERT

Resistance

OPTIONS

Training

how they can help you reach your goals

If you really want to look and feel your best, you should incorporate resistance training into your routine. Resistance training will help to increase muscle, improve posture, tone your body, increase your metabolism and allow you to focus on changing the shape of specific areas of your body. A resistance training program is a structured and planned workout routine designed to fatigue your muscles, with a desired outcome of increasing muscle endurance, muscle strength, muscle size or some combination of the three. There are several types of resistance available that will help accomplish your goals: body weight, machines, free weights, cables, and elastic tubing or resistance bands. They each work your body in a different way and each has pros and cons. Let’s analyze the differences so that you can create a resistance training plan that aligns with your personal goals.

BODY WEIGHT The force of gravity on your body creates resistance that you can use to strengthen your muscles. Using your body as resistance is great, because it’s easy to mimic real life activities. PROS : It is convenient; your body is always with you. It is functional, very easy to mimic real life movements. CONS : It can be difficult to adjust the amount of resistance. Your body may be too heavy for some exercises (e.g. pull-ups). Your body may be too light for other exercises (e.g. squats).

FREE WEIGHTS

12 | bet terlife winter 2014

Barbells and dumbbells. PROs : You control the path of motion. Free weights are functional—it’s easy to move in a variety of natural movement patterns. It’s easy to modify the resistance to an appropriate level. More muscles are activated (compared to machines) resulting in higher caloric expenditure. More stabilizing muscles are engaged resulting in joint stability and a reduced risk of injury. Cons : There is a greater potential for bad technique or form (hire a Personal Trainer to help teach you proper form). Can be more dangerous—you’ll need a spotter/ workout partner if you want to push yourself to your limits. The resistance does not always match the natural strength curves of the body.

CABLES You’re probably wondering why they aren’t in the “machine” category. Cable machines use a weight stack similar to machines, but there is a very big difference. With cables there are a variety of attachments that can be used for an array of exercises and those attachments are able to travel in virtually unlimited movement patterns similar to free weights. PROs : Cables are versatile (you can perform many different exercises and movement patterns). Cables are functional—just like with free weights you control the movement patterns. The resistance remains consistent throughout the entire movement. Cons : Increasing the resistance by one setting can sometimes be too much. Once you can lift the entire stack weight you can’t continue to increase resistance. (Cables are pretty awesome—these two cons are very minor.)

MACHINES Machines are a good introduction to the gym for beginners. Machines typically are designed to isolate a specific muscle or movement. The resistance comes from a stack of weight that is easily changed with the placement of a pin. PROs : Machines can be less intimidating than free weights. Machines guide you through a correct path of movement. Machines isolate muscles (or groups of muscles). The resistance matches the natural strength curve of muscles. Machines are safe so you don’t need a spotter. Cons : Machines isolate muscles (also a pro). It’s not natural—the body doesn’t function properly with isolated muscle movement. The functional carryover to real life activities will be minimal.

RESISTANCE BANDS Elastic tubing is another alternative available to you when planning your workouts PROs : Bands are compact and light. Perfect for trips (they won’t take up much space in your luggage). Just a few bands will provide a significant variety of resistance. Bands match the natural strength curve of some exercises (squats, presses and triceps). Bands are convenient and affordable.

Now that you understand some of the variables of resistance training, it’s time to apply the information. List your goals, create a plan, come to the Village with a purpose and work hard. The results will positively impact your life in every way.

John Preston is a Personal Trainer at Gainey Village. He has 20 years of experience. For more information please contact John at jpreston@ dmbclubs.com or 602.999.4593.

winter 2014 bet terlife | 13

Cons : Bands can be difficult to use for some muscle groups (back). The resistance is in direct opposition to some strength curves (biceps, lateral raise, etc.). It’s difficult to apply enough resistance for significant strength gains.

Cross Training with Gyrokinesis® Want to keep doing all those awesome high-intensity workouts? Want to play tennis, golf, dance, etc. well into your golden years? If the answer is yes, then cross training is a must. But not just any cross training—cross training with Gyrokinesis! Gyrokinesis is a movement system that relaxes tension and rebalances the body. It’s stretching, core work and massage rolled into one! By gently moving through greater ranges of motion, the body increases blood flow to the moving areas. This allows muscles to relax and a greater range of motion to be achieved.

14 | bet terlife winter 2014

Gyrokinesis works from the inside out. The focus is on the deeper core muscles engaging throughout exercises, letting the larger muscles have a chance to rest and recover from regular exercise, stress and everyday use. In addition, sore muscles can recover faster because of the increase in circulation, without added stress to that area. Many exercises are done from a sitting position. This provides the greatest potential for full range of motion. The focus is on spinal flexibility with core support. Gyrokinesis helps heal the body so you can continue to do the things you love. Retaining flexibility and the ability to move through life is freedom! — Dawn Ryan

Please join Dawn at DC Ranch Village on Fridays at 8:45 am in the Mind Body Studio. All levels are welcome. For more information, or to schedule a private/small group training, please contact Dawn at 602.722.7981.

Yoga Gives the Mind a Reason to Relax The average person has 60,000 thoughts per day. This makes perfect sense, as our brains are programmed to think, after all. However, with all of this information being processed, there is no escaping the fact that our minds must be trained to relax. If the mind is restless, it does not want to relax. The mind may want to worry about what has happened or anticipate what might happen (not being present). How can yoga put these thoughts on hold and promote present living? Simply put: Yoga gives the mind something to do on an internal level (focusing on the breath) and external level (moving the body). Yoga simply connects the two. — Lindsey Hoffman, RYT 200, YFG

The Village lifestyle is coming to Chandler! The Village Health Clubs and Spas will begin construction in early 2014 on their newest facility—Ocotillo Village Health Club and Spa. The club’s location will be on the Southwest corner of Ocotillo and Alma School Roads in Chandler. Construction is scheduled to be completed in January 2015. The Ocotillo Club will be constructed on 8 acres of land that has been owned by DMB Sports Clubs, L.P. since 2007. The finished building will be approximately 82,000 square feet and will include the latest in cardio and strength equipment, cutting-edge group exercise rooms, a healthy café, kids club, regular yoga and hot yoga studios, indoor basketball court, running track, Pilates and cycle studios, racquetball courts, squash courts, luxurious men’s and women’s locker rooms, family locker room, retail shop and a functional training area. Members and their guests will be able to enjoy the great views from the café patio, swim in the lap pool or activities pool or have fun with the kids at the spray garden or on the event lawn. There will also be seven outdoor, lighted, post-tension tennis courts with a full tennis program of leagues, interclub play, tournaments and tennis socials.

A variety of social opportunities throughout the year will include parties, hikes, social events, ski trips, family events and holiday parties for members and guests. last night?

sleep

A good night’s sleep. Unachievable, right? Like a three-minute mile. Yet I continue the quest for a good, restful night.

C. Scott Hagler

We all need our sleep. Though scientists have yet to fully understand all the subtleties of sleep, they are clear that sleep provides an opportunity for the body to repair and rejuvenate itself. Studies back this up. Many of the major restorative functions in the body like muscle growth, tissue repair, protein synthesis and growth hormone release occur mostly, or in some cases only, during sleep, according to the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Conversely, it has been found that animals entirely deprived of sleep lose all immune function and die in a matter of weeks.*

melatonin, magnesium. I’ve drunk chamomile tea and warm milk. I’ve experimented with the timing of my dinner and the quantity of animal protein at the evening meal. I’ve tried small amounts of wine and other spirits at different points in the evening vs. no alcohol at all. I’ve contrasted drinking coffee and tea, and tried going completely without caffeine. I take in a group-exercise class or go for a walk several times a week. I’ve been eating paleo now for a few weeks, so I’ve eliminated grains, all refined junk and most dairy products. I haven’t found any correlation with quality sleep, based on all these experiments.

A lack of adequate sleep can affect judgment, mood, ability to learn and retain information, and may increase the risk of serious accidents and injury, in the short term. Chronic sleep deprivation may lead to a host of health problems including obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and even early mortality.

A few months ago I discovered that I have heavy-metal poisoning as a result of old mercury fillings. Heavy metals can affect mood and sleep, the ability to lose weight and lots more. The solution has been to replace the fillings (I’m halfway through the process).

18 | bet terlife winter 2014

If you’re new to sleep issues, there’s a pretty commonsense list of things to try first (next page, top right). If you’ve tested these suggestions for a decent amount of time without decent results, it may be time to delve deeper. We humans are complicated, and each of us has our own issues, challenges and stories. It certainly seems that my case wasn’t so simple. I’m willing to try just about anything to get some good Zs. I’ve tried all the herbal supplements that are marketed to improve sleep, including valerian,

I work long hours for long stretches, and would say that I tend to feel stressed a lot of the time. I know, from research, about cortisol, commonly called the “stress hormone.” Stress, burnout and sleep deprivation can lead to increased levels of cortisol, a hormone released by the adrenal cortex, which can interrupt sleep. Can you say, “vicious cycle”? I’m now exploring herbs that work to reduce cortisol levels and support the adrenals. I’ve only been taking them for a few weeks, so I think it’s too soon to say whether they’ve been effective for me. *

http://healthysleep.med.harvard.edu/healthy/matters/ benefits-of-sleep/why-do-we-sleep

About ten years ago I did a sleep study to test for sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is where breathing is interrupted during sleep. People with untreated sleep apnea stop breathing repeatedly during their sleep, sometimes hundreds of times. This means the brain—and the rest of the body—may not get enough oxygen. I’m grateful that the study found that if I sleep on my side rather than my back, the doctor considered me “borderline.” One common treatment for sleep apnea is a machine called a continuous positive airway pressure, or CPAP for short. I have several friends that found the CPAP to be the answer to their sleep issues and all have acquired new leases on life. I have no problem falling asleep; it’s staying asleep that’s my problem. For a long while I’d wake up at 3:30 in the morning for nights on end. From prior experience with acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, I remembered that there’s a traditional Chinese medicine system that ties those wake-up times to certain organs in the body, both energetically and spiritually. The system allows you to determine which meridian could use some herbal support and/or selfreflection. The hours from 3:00 to 5:00 am represent the lungs, along with grief and sadness, for example. There are a few things that I know make a difference for me. • My room needs to be cool—68° seems to be ideal. • The darker the room, the better. I cover the light on the humidifier and the face of my radio-alarm clock with washcloths. • No pets. As tempted as I am to let my cat stay on the bed, I know that the chances are good he’ll get restless at some point during the night. • A hot bath before bed, particularly when I can just relax, or read light material, can help. I bought a new, firm mattress this week. It’s funny that I resisted spending the $1,500 when this is such an important part of sleep. And when you think that we spend as much as a third of our lives sleeping, it doesn’t make any sense not to spend the money. I have had two good nights so far, which, of course, makes me wonder how much of a bad night’s sleep can be blamed on a worn-out mattress? With the new mattress and a super-duper custom “sleep-designed” pillow (not one from an infomercial, but a personally-fit Oxygen Pillow) I may have solved a good portion of my sleep problems. For 2014 I resolve to continue to explore every new lead for improved sleep, and approach each one optimistically, and with a sense of curiosity. I’ll try stretching before bedtime, turning off the TV at least a half hour before turning in, and not reading on my iPad in bed.

Z

Set a regular bedtime, and wake up at the same time every day Increase natural light exposure during the day Cut back on caffeine Avoid alcohol before bedtime Turn off your TV and computer at least 30 minutes before bedtime Make your bedroom sleep-friendly by darkening it + cooling it down Avoid big meals at dinner Make sure you have a good mattress and pillow

How do you know if you are getting enough sleep? If you sleep less than 8 hours a night you may be sleep deprived and not even know it. “But I don’t have time to make sleep a priority,” you say? If you think you are too busy to get enough sleep each night, consider the fact that the quality of your sleep time determines the quality of your awake time. The better you sleep, the more productive you will be and the more you will get done. Sleep is as important to your health as exercise and good nutrition. You can’t find an easier way to take care of yourself!

THE

GAME

One of the Valley’s top dermatologists is reinvesting in his health and fitness

Dr. Rick Averitte has always been an athlete with a competitive spirit. He remembers his mother waking him and his brother up early on Saturday mornings to go running through their Tallmadge, Ohio neighborhood.

20 | bet terlife winter 2014

He was one of the top-ranked state wrestlers and ran track in high school, and regularly performed 500-pound squats to burn stress when he worked as an engineer in the construction business. Even in med school, Rick managed to stay in marathon shape most of the time, and ran every chance he got. Then a funny thing happened when he started his rotations. “The wheels started coming off slowly,” Rick recalls. “I just couldn’t fit exercise into my schedule anymore, and I’ve been struggling with that for the past 13 years.” Being in the Valley has definitely had an impact on Rick’s ability to stay in shape. “I gained more weight every summer, because I just couldn’t make time to get out and run early in the morning.” Thanks to some gentle persuasion from his wife, Marlie, and because of his 10-year-old son’s growing

interest in basketball, Dr. Averitte is making some changes in his life. “I’m coming out of my cocoon and have been saying yes to things that I used to find uncomfortable, such as promoting my dermatology practice and even playing with my kids.” For the good doctor, family time has been one of the biggest paybacks from his renewed commitment to his health. “I want to be the kind of role model that my mom was for me,” Rick says. “Now I have a lot more energy to go shoot hoops with my kids at the end of the day. They’ve heard me say no to them so much, and now we can have a great time together, even if it’s just for 20 minutes. Spending time with them is a big part of my happiness these days.” We talked to Dr. Averitte while he was driving his triplets home from school. He talked about how his life has changed so dramatically in just the past few months.

the village: How long have you been a member of the Village? rick averitte: I’ve known about the club for a long time, but I actually just joined this past summer. Why did you wait so long? I stayed away because so many of my patients and other people I know are members there, and I was worried that I’d be inundated with medical questions. My practice sees nearly 4,000 people a month, and I’m very protective of my privacy. So have people been asking you for medical advice? It turns out I was completely wrong. Everyone has been really respectful, and I can honestly say that my time at the Village is very relaxing. Now that you’re a Village member, what are your goals? I really wanted to lose the 30 or 40 pounds of gut I was carrying around. I don’t step on a scale every day, but in three months I’ve gone from a 38- or 40-inch waist down to a 34. Some of those 34s are a little tight, but I can still fit in them. That’s amazing. How did you do it? Mostly just by running on the treadmill, spin classes and some multi-purpose conditioning classes. I learned from my wrestling days how important flexibility is, so I stretch on a regular basis, too. I try to get to the club about four or five times a week. Are you training for anything specific? Yeah. I’m the founder of the Arizona Skin Cancer Foundation, and last year we started a 5K to help educate people about sun safety and skin cancer prevention and treatment. I couldn’t run the race last year and I thought that set a bad example. So I’m running in it this year. If anyone is interested in participating they can learn more at www.skinexam.org. How’s your training going? Really well! I’m not going to look like a fool out there or anything like that. I like having an event to train for every three or four months. It keeps those competitive juices flowing and helps me stay motivated. What other competitions are on the horizon for you? The 5K has been my focus, but I’d like to do the 10K or the Half Marathon in March in conjunction with the Phoenix Marathon. The Phoenix Marathon is the fastest-growing marathon in the country, and I’m helping to run the recovery tent. I’m also interested in doing a triathlon one day.

In addition to your training, has your diet changed at all? Yes. I don’t eat as much junk. I used be able to eat a little junk and work a little harder to cancel it out, but I can’t play that game as much now that I’m 48. I’m a lot more conscious of what I put into my body, largely due to the fact that my class instructors at the Village always give nice little reminders about eating more vegetables, more fruit and more protein. Has it been difficult for you to eat better? Not really. I can always get something solid at the café in the Club…I like to eat a lot of different foods, from Ethiopian to sushi to Binkley’s, and everywhere I go I can usually make good choices. I’m an adventurous eater: the only things that would give me pause are these arachnids and bugs that some people prepare. What does your family think about the Village? They love it. My kids especially like to go to the club to hang out with their friends, and my wife enjoys bringing the kids over so she can get on the treadmill for awhile. She’s going to start spinning with me soon, and my son is really involved in the basketball program. What brought you to the Valley in the first place? My wife did. My brother was out here and introduced me to her when I was visiting in 1998. What do you like best about living here? The outdoors. I’m an avid golfer and I also like to hike. As a dermatologist who specializes in skin cancer, how do you balance your love for the outdoors with the impact the sun can have on your health? I do everything I can to show people how they can spend time outside safely. I came out here to be a cosmetic guy, but it soon became apparent that the greatest need here was for me to focus on skin cancer prevention and treatment. When I first came out here, it was really hard to get to see a derm right away. So before I was on contract with the different insurance companies, I agreed to see people for the price of their co-pay. Since then I never looked back, and today we have offices in Scottsdale, Anthem, Deer Valley and Surprise. The sun shines in Phoenix about 300 days a year. It’s a blessing and a curse, and I’m here to help more people take advantage of the great weather without getting sick.
