Fun Workout Ideas for the Whole Family
Tara Littlejohn OCOTILLO PERSONAL TRAINERWe all know modern day life makes it difficult to stay moving. Working from home, social distancing, binge watching TV series, increased stress, and unhealthy food choices can all contribute to a sedentary lifestyle and declining health. And whether we realize it or not, every household contains its own unique family culture of health-related habits. Ask yourself: is your family culture a healthconscious one? Are your daily patterns supporting a healthier lifestyle? Daily decisions vary from family to family, but every decision either contributes towards health or away from it. But the good news is with a little awareness and planning, every family can design their households to be more movement-centered and health-conscious!
The Hard Truth
Today about half of all American adults have one or more preventable chronic diseases. And most of these chronic diseases are positively affected by regular physical activity. yet nearly 80% of adults are not meeting the minimum movement guidelines. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends adults do at least 2.5-5 hours of moderate-intensity or 1.25-2.5 hours of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity per week. But did you know frequent, every-day movements can add up to improve you and your family’s health in big ways?
Getting Started
To get your family in motion (pun intended), you want to first sit down with your entire family and agree on some exercises/activities of popular interest. Listed below are some fun workout ideas for you and your family of all ages and abilities. Choose fun, lightly competitive, and realistic activities to ensure your exercise efforts are safe and successful. Next plan on preforming these workouts on the days and times you and your family already spend quality time together. You want these times to be realistic. If you don’t spend enough quality time together, this is a big area of opportunity! Think of sedentary activities that can be reduced (less screen time) and replace with 30-60 minutes of activities most days of the week. Finally, write out the planned activities on either a large calendarstyle white board located in a common family area or place workout ideas in a cookie jar (or a fruit bowl) for random drawings (this can be especially fun for smaller children).
Family Workout Ideas:
• Post Dinner Walk or Run:
• Random Dance Party:
Get moving!
• Sit-Up Contest:
• Frisbee Dodgeball:
• Push-Up Contest:
• Wall-Sit Contest:
I hope that you got some family workout ideas to get your family active and enjoying time together. Remember, regular exercise is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle. Strive to meet the physical activity guidelines while keeping things fun! Together, you and your family you can inspire, motivate, and keep each other accountable towards the road better to health. Now let’s get moving!
NUTRITIOUS FUEL FOR HIKING
With cooler weather to enjoy and so much terrain to explore, it’s the perfect time to stay active and enjoy nature. But before heading out on the trails, it’s important to plan ahead how to nutritiously fuel your body for the hike. Village Dietitian, Jamie Miller, has some helpful nutrition tips to keep in mind beyond just tossing a bottle of water and a granola bar in your bag.
Hydration
Even if the weather has cooled off and you’re not sweating as much, you still need to stay hydrated as you enjoy your hike. Try to pre-hydrate by drinking 2-4 cups of water before a hike so you have less to carry in your bag. Then, a good rule of thumb is to plan for about 2 cups of fluid for every hour of hiking. If the hike is less than 1 hour, simple water will do. But if it is a longer venture or you are sweating more heavily , it’s important to add in electrolytes to keep you hydrated. While there are many products on the market, Village Dietitian Jamie Miller, likes a product such as LMNT which is no sugar added and also contains salt to balance out the sodium your body is losing while sweating.
Food is Fuel for Hiking
While hiking or doing any endurance activity, carbohydrates are the body’s preferred source of energy since they’re easier for your body to digest and use for energy versus protein or fat. When embarking on a longer distance hike, aim for 30 to 60 grams (120 to 240 calories) of carbohydrates per hour to improve strength and endurance and delay fatigue.
Stock Up On Snacks
Similar to hydration, if your hike is shorter than an hour or two, you likely won’t need a snack. But much longer, you will need to prepare with nourishment to keep you going. The body best processes 100–300 calories per hour while exercising. Eating smaller snacks more frequently keeps blood sugar and energy levels stable, and also won’t overload the stomach. Eating too many calories at once not only can divert blood away from working muscles in favor of digestion, but also can cause energy levels to dip or cause digestive distress.
What to Pack
While perishable food could be carried with an ice pack, that can easily weigh a hiker down. So instead, try some creative non-perishable food items. The key is to pack a balance of different food groups, and pair them together for best satisfaction and stable blood sugar. There are many easy to pack produce options such as apples, applesauce packets, bananas, oranges, grape tomatoes, and mini bell peppers. For portable protein, try jerky, meat bars, protein powder to be mixed with water, and tuna pouches. Healthy fats can be packed in the form of nuts and seeds, nut butter packs, or olives. Carbohydrates could come from dried cereals or granola, dried fruits, fruit leather, bread, tortillas, or crackers. For ideas how to pair foods for balanced snacks, check out these snack ideas:
• Trail mix (nuts, seeds, dried fruit, coconut, dried cereal, etc)
• Nut butter packs with apple, banana, or tortilla
• Ready made tuna or chicken packets with crackers
• Jerky, fruit leather, and cheese crisps such as Whisps
• Applesauce pouch and almonds
• Smoothie Pouch, such as Fuel to Fire
• Energy or granola bars, such as RXbar

SCORE A TOUCHDOWN FOR HEALTH SUPERBOWL TIPS
Nachos, chicken wings, dips, pizza, and beer… these are just a few star players at any Superbowl Party. So during the big game, is it possible to make healthy choices? Village Dietitian, Jamie Miller, has a play-by-play of how to not have a nutritional fumble while watching the big game.
1. Don’t go into the game starving. By eating a balanced, healthy breakfast and lunch, you won’t be so tempted to dive into the chip bowl from out of control hunger.
2. Pick your seat wisely. Instead of sitting right next to the appetizer table, find a spot that makes it difficult to reach for more food. This can really help with mindless grazing.
3. Practice head-to-head match ups of indulgent vs. healthy fare. Make a game-day rule that for every wing you eat, you have three celery sticks. Or for every brownie, you have 1 cup of fruit. If your healthy choices outnumber your not-so-healthy ones, you can walk away feeling proud and satisfied, while still enjoying some classic game day foods.
4. Watch what you’re sipping on. Use the 1:1 drinking rule. For every alcoholic beverage you plan to drink, follow it up with a glass of water. Not only can alcohol add a hefty amount of calories to your evening, but lowered inhibitions may result in more munching than you intended.
5. Bring a healthy dish. This will ensure there will be at least one option to fill a big portion of your plate with. You can also impress your friends with a nutritious contribution to the spread that’s still absolutely delicious. Here’s some recipe to try out!
Here are a couple recipes to kickoff your football party with a few Winners!
Cheesy Buffalo Chicken Dip
• 1/2 (8 oz) package fat free cream cheese, softened
• 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt
• 1 1/2 tbsp ranch dry seasoning mix
• 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese or blue cheese
• 1/2 cup Franks Red Hot Buffalo Wing Sauce (more or less depending on desired heat)
• 1 1/2 cup chicken, cooked and shredded or pulled
• Veggies and baked crackers for serving
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a small baking dish with non-stick spray. In a bowl, mix together the first 5 ingredients. Add the pulled chicken, and stir until well combined. Spoon mixture into baking dish, and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until dip is warmed through and cheese is melted. Serve warm with celery sticks, carrots, cucumber, bell pepper, or other veggies, and baked crackers.
Peanut Butter Fruit Dip
• 1 (6 oz) container fat free Greek yogurt
• 2 tbsp peanut flour or 1 tbsp nut butter
• 2-4 pkts stevia or 1-2 tbs honey or sweetener of choice to taste
• 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
• 1/4 tsp almond extract (optional)
• Assorted fruit for serving
Directions:
Stir together all ingredients until well combined. Serve chilled with berries, grapes, apple slices, or other fruits!
Mediterranean 5 Layer Dip
• 1 lb hummus (family size)
• 1 large red bell pepper
• 1/2 english cucumber, diced
• 2 roma tomatoes, diced
• 3 oz (1/3 cup) feta cheese, crumbled
• Serve with baked pita chips/cracker and veggies
• 1/4 cup black olives (optional)
Directions:
In an 8-9 inch round (or square) serving dish, spread the hummus evenly on the bottom of the dish. Layer everything else on top of the hummus. Chill in the refrigerator until ready to serve. Serve with toasted whole grain pita or whole grain crackers and sliced veggies.

BODY SCRUBS
WHATS THE BENEFIT
BY HEATHER BLASCAKMany people equate body scrubs to summertime. Bathing suits, shorts and tank tops make us think of perfecting our skin in order to show it off. In actuality, however, winter is the most beneficial time to exfoliate our skin. That dry, chilly air may be refreshing, but it also evaporates moisture from the skin, leaving it dry and flaky.
These environmental stressors and the dietary changes that come with the holiday season can lead to a buildup of skin’s natural oils, causing bumps, spots or dry patches. The best remedy to combat these irritants is regular exfoliation to clarify and refresh the skin. A professional body scrub provides a thorough and effective way to show off healthy, flawless skin year-round.
We know it’s important to use body scrubs to exfoliate and buff away impurities and dead skin, leaving the body smoother and softer, but they have a host of other benefits for the skin that are often overlooked. The abrasive properties of sugar and salt scrubs unclog pores, help prevent ingrown hairs, remove dull dead skin and can help reduce scarring and acne. There are also chemical properties of these ingredients that provide additional skin beautifying benefits.
Sugar scrubs are a popular choice in many spas. Sugar is ideal for those with sensitive skin because it is a natural humectant, which means it absorbs water into the skin and leaves it ultra-hydrated. Sugar contains a high level of glycolic acid (or AHA), which assists in cell turnover and helps break down dry, dead skin. This powerhouse ingredient is used in many skincare products to create nourished, younger looking skin.
Salt results in a slightly more abrasive scrub, making it a better choice for stubborn, extremely dry skin. Salt contains a combination of trace elements such as calcium, magnesium and potassium that can reduce inflammation, improve circulation, flush out toxins, improve skin texture and accelerate cell turnover. Salt also has antibacterial properties, which can help relieve itching as well as calm irritated skin.
Both types of scrubs can help unclog pores, leaving them primed and ready for any serum, oil or body moisturizer. The ingredients in these products are more effective, can provide greater results and can penetrate deeper into the skin when applied after a body scrub treatment. Either one you choose will transform the look and feel of your skin. Sloughing away dry, unhealthy skin cells promotes new cell growth and regenerates the skin, leaving it firmer and younger looking.
The final per of a body scrub treatment is the utterly indulgent experience that accompanies it! Dry brushing, hot stones, full body massage and scalp treatments are just a few of the many options offered when receiving a body scrub treatment. Each is followed by a luxurious combination of nutrient-rich mud, oil or moisturizer to complete the treatment.
TRAINER SPOTLIGHT
Village Personal Training New Member Orientation
The first step of your health journey at the Village Health Clubs is joining the club. Congratulations, and welcome! The next step is a little more challenging. You’ll need to adopt a habit of regular physical activity. According to IHRSA (The International Heath, Racquet and Sportsclub Association), health club members are more likely to succeed in reaching their goals when they integrate into multiple activities available to them at their club. Additionally, members can further increase their potential for success by engaging with and developing relationships with their health club’s employees. Building relationships with the staff (and other members) leads to a sense of belonging and community that results in a deeper commitment to reaching your goals. The good news is that the staff here at the Village Clubs is ready to help.
New Member Orientation
While there are many ways to get integrated into the numerous activities that we offer here at the Village Clubs, the best way to get started on your fitness goals is to sign up for your New Member Orientation with one of our personal trainers. Our personal trainers are the extremely knowledgeable and must hold at least a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science or a related subject. We are the only full-service health club in the region (and one of the few in the country) that requires this standard. Additionally, our personal trainers must hold an accredited national certification that meets the industry standards established by IHRSA. Now you might be wondering, what exactly can you expect from during your New Member Orientation?
What to expect
During your New Member Orientation, you will spend two 60-minutes sessions with one of our personal trainers. Your first session consists of a brief medical history, a consultation and a standard yet comprehensive fitness assessment. Both the medical history and the consultation will help your trainer become aware of any physical or medical issues that might necessitate modifications to your exercise program. The consultation will also help your trainer to understand your exercise history, your schedule, your health and fitness goals, your exercise/activity preferences and more. Lastly the fitness assessment will help both you and your trainer to understand exactly where you on your fitness journey today. The assessment includes body composition, flexibility, muscle endurance, functional ability and cardiovascular capacity measurements.
Fitness Assessment
We use a web-based fitness assessment software called Trainermetrics for our assessments. Your trainer will send you a PDF of your fitness assessment results shortly after your first session. You’ll also be able to log into your fitness assessment profile to view your results. As you retest overtime your online profile will track your progress with graphs and charts as you work toward achieving your goals. Between your first and second appointment your personal trainer will take all the information that was collected during the first session and develop a personalized workout that is optimal for your place in your fitness journey. During the second orientation session, your trainer will walk you through the hour-long workout, showing you how to do the exercises and making sure you are comfortable with your new routine.
Things you should know about our New Member Orientation:
1. Every member can participate.
2. Even if you’ve been a member for some time, you can still sign up for an orientation (as long as you haven’t done your orientation in the past).
3. These two sessions are included in your membership (there is no cost to you).
4. This is the best way to make sure you are exercising safely in our clubs
If you’ve yet to take advantage of our New Member Orientation, simply reach out to your club’s Fitness Director. Our Fitness Directors will ask a few questions so they can pair you up with the best trainer for you. Once you’re signed up for your orientation, just show up with a smile on your face and enjoy! You’ll thank yourself for taking this positive step toward better health!
Although this article took a deep dive on our personal training New Member Orientation process, I want you to know all the ways you can get involved at the Village Health Clubs. Here is a list of other professional services that you have access to for introductory orientations. Any employee can help connect you with the right person at your club for more information on any of these services.
